NRO's Hanson: Obama-Loving Media Have Committed Suicide

Photo of Noel Sheppard.

The media's abysmal coverage of the 2008 presidential campaign has been the equivalent of a mass press suicide that has signaled the end of journalism.

So wrote National Review contributor and Hoover Institution senior fellow Victor Davis Hanson Friday in a scathing rebuke of all those so-called impartial journalists who sacrificed their souls and whatever was left of their integrity this year to assist Barack Obama win the White House.

Here are some of Hanson's key points (emphasis added):

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

There have always been media biases and prejudices. Everyone knew that Walter Cronkite, from his gilded throne at CBS news, helped to alter the course of the Vietnam War, when, in the post-Tet depression, he prematurely declared the war unwinnible. Dan Rather’s career imploded when he knowingly promulgated a forged document that impugned the service record of George W. Bush. We’ve known for a long time — from various polling, and records of political donations of journalists themselves, as well as surveys of public perceptions — that the vast majority of journalists identify themselves as Democratic, and liberal in particular.

Yet we have never quite seen anything like the current media infatuation with Barack Obama, and its collective desire not to raise key issues of concern to the American people.

Hanson then elaborated on four key areas of national interest the press conveniently ignored during this campaign cycle: campaign financing; Joe Biden's history and gaffes; Obama's many nefarious associations, and; Obama's socialist beliefs.

After each ignored area of interest was explained, Hanson posed the following respectively:

Imagine the reaction of the New York Times or the Washington Post had John McCain renounced his promise to participate in public campaign financing, proceeded instead to amass $600 million and outraise the publicly financed Barack Obama four-to-one, and begun airing special 30-minute unanswered infomercials during the last week of the campaign. [...]

Imagine the reaction of Newsweek or Time had moose-hunting mom Sarah Palin claimed FDR went on television to address the nation as President in 1929, or warned America that our enemies abroad would test John McCain and that his response would result in a radical loss of his popularity at home. [...]

Imagine the reaction of CNN or NBC had John McCain’s pastor and spiritual advisor of 20 years been revealed as a white supremacist who damned a multiracial United States, or had he been a close acquaintance until 2005 of an unrepentant terrorist bomber of abortion clinics, or had McCain himself sued to eliminate congressional opponents by challenging the validity of African-American voters who signed petitions, or had both his primary and general election senatorial rivals imploded once their sealed divorce records were mysteriously leaked. [...]

Imagine the reaction of NPR and PBS had John McCain advocated something like abolishing all capital gains taxes, or repealing incomes taxes in favor of a national retail sales tax. [...]

Imagine indeed.

Frankly, had the media done their job this year rather than act as Obama's campaign stooges, McCain would likely have a ten-point lead in the polls right now, or at the very least be facing off against Hillary Clinton next Tuesday, as the junior senator from Illinois wouldn't have gotten out of the primaries.

Hanson concluded:

The media has succeeded in shielding Barack Obama from journalistic scrutiny. It thereby irrevocably destroyed its own reputation and forfeited the trust that generations of others had so carefully acquired. And it will never again be trusted to offer candid and nonpartisan coverage of presidential candidates.

Worse still, the suicide of both print and electronic journalism has ensured that, should Barack Obama be elected president, the public will only then learn what they should have known far earlier about their commander-in-chief — but in circumstances and from sources they may well regret.

Only if President Obama, Speaker Pelosi, and Majority Leader Reid don't reenact the Fairness Doctrine, and eliminate all opposing views.

Alas, the recent decision by the Obama campaign to remove representatives of three newspapers from its plane doesn't give one confidence the truth about the junior senator from Illinois will ever be revealed to the masses.

Regardless, read the whole thing.

Absolutely true.  And Rush

Absolutely true.  And Rush and Sean have been saying it for weeks already.

Strangely satisfying to watch, though.  Maybe after their immolation we'll have a cleaner, leaner, press?

Nah, probably not but it would be nice...

"Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God."  - Paul (Rom. 13:1)

A cleaner, leaner press?

I doubt it, too. Here's what I see happening in a couple of years.

Maybe in time to help the Democrats in the mid-term elections. Citing the overwhelming importance of "traditional" media to our democracy (as compared to those irresponsible "alternative" sources), and in light of the plummetting circulation/viewership and imminent failure of certain big-name newspapers and broadcast news organizations, the Obama administration will pass a bill providing for a "rescue" (bailout) of these organizations to prevent them from going under. Necessary to preserve our democracy, you understand.  I can hear the talking points now.

Of course, the democratic administration will decide which organizations are worthy and in need of federal funding. With the oversight of the democratic legislature, of course.

And it will become clear to anybody in the Press that articles that challenge the wonderous Administrtion policies will result in a cut-off from taxpayer funding.

After all, why not spread the wealth around? If Fox News is doing well (because every moderate with a brain realizes that this is the only way to get real news), isn't it proper to tax their income and help struggling MSNBC?

Obviously I'm being paranoid, but I'm wondering if I'm being paranoid enough. Every few days seems to produce some other insight into what an Obama adminstation will really be about. Hard to imagine them not waiting until AFTER election day to reveal these true stripes.

Loss of Freedoms

While the media and the left have been complaining about some mythical loss of freedoms under Bush, they are perpetrating one of the greatest freedoms which is freedom of the press.

This is an institution whose purpose is to freely inform the public without the possibility of censure by the government. Over the past two years the press, when it comes to political and government news, has dropped all pretense of integrity and have become their own censure of what they want the public to know.

My local newspaper, Newsday, has been one of those perpetrators. They have intentionally denied readers on Long Island of any news regarding Obama's remarks on "spreading the wealth" and more recently any mention of the L.A. Times video of Obama at Khalid's farewell festivities.

Given the fact that almost all major dailies and broadcast networks have become pure propaganda machines for Obama, this is coming frighteningly close to "1984" Ministry of Truth. If you question Obama or the media we have seen them attack you and even punish you with slander.

In an Obama administration we could actually see the Fairness Doctrine enacted and make that Ministry of Truth even more a reality.

False God Syndrome

What I find particullarly worrisome is that the problem seems to propagate itself. I can't tell you how many times I've been listening to my local radio talk show and the host just parrots what the MSM have been saying. They take the MSM at their word. These are hosts that are centrist by nature and are no doubt pulling for Obama but I don't think they really have a clue on whats really going on out there and some of the nuances of the campaign. I heard one host say last week that "Obama is on the right wing of the democratic party. More right than Clinton". The whole thing is a joke.

Imagine if

John McCain had bought a 30 minute time block on nearly every station out there, and people claimed Bush was buying democracy

And if Palin's best friend was a former but unrepentant abortion clinic bomber

To quote Greg Gutfield, republicans would damn near be gang raped for that

  "Obama- Loving Media

"Obama- Loving Media Have Committted Suicide."

Yeah, right.  What a bunch of baloney.  What the "press" has done, is doing, and will do is ensure their access.  Note the conservatives are being left "by the plane" literally - see the article about the conservatives being kicked off the plane to make room for more liberals.  Do you think that will not continue in the future?

The template is clear: Do you know of any conservatives that have interviewed Chavez, Castro,  etc. lately - ever?

Conservatives will be shut out of a bambi (57 states) administration - with the possible exception of the, "I always voted Republican, but now . . ."

One has to ask, will that hurt "journalism?"  The answer is a resounding no.  If the majority of the politicians in D.C. are liberals to include both houses, the president and a boat load of judgeships (who do think bambi will appoint when he gets in there), how will that hurt "journalism"  (I almost said liberal journalism, but that would be repeating myself.)?

We wag our tongues that our newspapers and TV news popularity is dying.  Nevertheless, if conservatives have no access what are you going to read or view?

well...

I'd say return to the roots of investigative journalism.  for starters.

If Republicans were a very

If Republicans were a very small minority of the population (say 15-20%), you might have a valid point.  However, that is simply not the case.  You can already see the negative impact on the media's financials.  It is only a matter of time before many of the far-left newspapers are completely sunk.  In a capitalistic economy, there will be competition if few attractive alternatives exist - even if access is limited, there is always a source.  Outside of financial impact, there is a good chance a conservative revolution would occur... marches, protests, straight out of the community organizing playbook.  Additionally, one thing we always have is support of the military.  Now, I'm not saying that a coup d'état would be in the cards if essentially we had a state-run media (maybe not financed by the state, but certainly controlled), but the top military commanders would not be pawns in an Obama admin and certainly would not sit by idely if they felt the future of this country were in jeopardy.

Like a lying, cheating, corrupt, thief? Then vote for obama...

(all from Hanson's article, except bold, which is mine)

CAMPAIGN FINANCING:

  • promised...Then in June 2008, Obama abruptly reneged: Lied
  • even the enormous amounts of money that he has raised — some of it under dubious circumstances involving foreign donors, prepaid credit cards, and false names: cheated

 THE PAST AS PRESENT:

  • Name an issue — FISA, NAFTA, guns, abortion, capital punishment, coal, nuclear power, drilling, Iran, Jerusalem, the surge — and Obama’s position today is not that of just a year ago: Lied
  • These were not artifacts of a typical political career, but extraordinary events in themselves that might well have shed light on present campaign tactics: cheated
  • a rather disturbing record of extra-electoral politics: cheated

 SOCIALISM:

  • a share-the-wealth socialism: stealing
  • curbing productive incentives by ensuring the poorer need not endanger their exemptions and credits by seeking greater income; and discouraging the wealthy from seeking greater income, given that nearly two-thirds of additional wealth would be lost to taxes: corrupt

 ...result:

"...should Barack Obama be elected president, the public will only then learn what they should have known far earlier about their commander-in-chief — but in circumstances and from sources they may well regret."

Thank you Victor Davis Hanson, from the bottom of my heart for exposing "the  one" for who he really is.  May your efforts be realized during this election period, or may God have mercy on us if it fails.

Check out the cartoon

Second post down.

It's the perfect visualization of what you just wrote, with a soupçon of irony at the end.

That's a whole bloody POT of irony.  :)

BTW, I started a forum topic after your terrific idea.....Reasons why _____ is voting for Obama.  It's under the "Off Topic Discussions".

Mr. Sheppard

I think y'all at NewsBusters may have a plagiarism case against Victor Davis Hanson. I mean, it looks like he lifted parts of y'alls recent posts and submitted them to the National Review as his own work. :-}

Why would NB pursue such a case?  On the right, we are all friends here- share and share alike.  I doubt that NB is working solely for "credit"- the important thing is to get the word and the truth out.  Remember the words of Ben Franklin- hang together, or hang separately.

Tim, LOL, I think you are missing HbK's sarcasm.

RD & Jack,

Thanks for the help guys. I appreciate it.

Tim, it was an attempt at being witty, OK? The thrust of the article by Hanson is very similar to what has been posted on numerous threads here at NB for some time now. My attempt at jocularity was in NO WAY implying that NB should file suit. I was simply pointing out the fact that great minds etc, etc, in my own manner.

Although, I believe that opinion writers for certain publications due indeed scour the "conservative" websites in hope of discovering material to elaborate upon for their pieces.  This goes for both pro and con alike.

Oh and Jack, here's what Barry's sarcasm police look like;

Hey, isn't that Howard Stern to his left?

my daughter, age 16, is entering into Journalism next year for her HS Newspaper.  We're using election year as a teaching moment.

Death becomes them

The MSM have sewn the seeds of their own destruction. Even with massive layoffs they still refuse to correct their ‘one sided journalism’.

It is a typical case of liberalism which dictates that they would prefer to die rather than change.

And dieing they are.

Well, GMTA!!

If not active suicide, they

If not active suicide, they certainly have signed their own death warrant.

Their demise is ongoing and predictable.  Never again will anyone put any credence in anything they report.

The question is: Do they care????

They'll care when they're

They'll care when they're all laid off and out of business.  Maybe they'll go into PR or advertising- they have the experience for that.

This is the last

This is the last presidential election newspapers will hold much sway.  We will begin to see newspapers disappear in the next 5 years.  Most will be gone in 10 years.

Network news gets about 20 million viewers each night.  I suspect that will be about 15 million in five years and under 10 million in 10 years (if they still exist at that point).

Time & Newsweek will be gone in 7 - 10 years also.

Couldn't happen to a nicer crowd.

MSM -DESTOYED!!

Millions of Americans have quit watching MSM and canceled newspapers.  Millions more will follow.

For Whom the Bells Toll

EVERY MSM's death doth REPLENISH me, as I am involved in mankind!

VDH speaks, I grok.

"A practical effect of socialism is often defined as curbing productive incentives by ensuring the poorer need not endanger their exemptions and credits by seeking greater income; and discouraging the wealthy from seeking greater income, given that nearly two-thirds of additional wealth would be lost to taxes."

Do read the whole thing as requested. There is nothing more we can add.
