Polling note on early voting

To explain that fully:
Conservatives tell polling drips to buzz off instead of filling out voter forms to tally. Obama people fill out as many forms as they can for little college girls who always skew polling by only asking people who look like Democrats to fill out forms.
Long story short, John McCain is leading in the early voting by a good margin due to what actually happens with polling questions.
Keep the faith people. John McCain will be Graced with the victory as they can't suppress the Silent Majority.

October 25, 2008 - 17:49 ET by bloolooThe photographer was unable to get the flag, the "halo", and the sign on the podium all in-frame (when properly composed), so, the photo's main subject is way offset. It totally goes against the 'rule of thirds' which is one of the most basic rules of photography. In a properly composed shot of the above, the red stripes would be way out of frame or the photo would have to be taken from much farther back to include them. I know it may sound like I'm nit-picking, but, I know photography... The right composition of a photo can 'sell' a story (or it's subject). Take it for whatever it's worth.

In this case, as it appears there's nothing to Michelle's right but ceiling and scaffolding, the picture would have been less interesting. The way it's framed now accomplishes what the photographer wanted I believe even if it goes against the rules so to speak. Make sense? ns

They make her out to be the "messiah's wife" because that's what they're trying to sell. It's really obvious in the photo of Obama's halo shot. There's nothing else in-frame in that photo. The photog in this case couldn't frame it exactly like Barack's, so, this was the best they could do... (just saying it was very deliberate... that's all) ;-)

I think she was in the center of the shot and it was cropped that way, but, something is wrong with the converging perspective of the lettering. It doesn't appear to match the edges of the sign (check the vertical edges of the lettering compared to the sign's vertical edge). You can cheat perspective with a view camera by swinging the lens, but, a press photog wouldn't be doing that. I don't have a lot of expertise with PS (never needed it...), but, I know you can add lettering or anything with photoshop and change it's convergence. You may be on to something!

October 26, 2008 - 06:52 ET by conscientiousobjectorThe lettering appears to be correctly equidistant from both sides, however the "M" and "F" appear to have been straightened along the 90 degree angle of the picture, as well as appearing lighter in overall color. The lightness could be a reflection, but the letters most definitely appear to be straightened in some way. Look at the relationship of the letter "f" to the letter "a" in families.
Also she's making a live long and prosper sign. Trying to pick up some undecided trekkies maybe?

You've all made very good observations, and I went and downloaded the jpeg (image) and zoomed in to concentrate on coloring and grain/texture, too, and it's smoother and more synthetic, which I'm very familiar with. The way all of the letters are tucked in just right (including the Web site along the bottom) is also way too convenient.
But again, to conclude, looking at all of this collectively, YES, this has been altered and the sign painted in, or at least tweaked.
And if so (and I'm pretty dang certain) this is outrageous and frightening as hell. We've got major/mainstream newspapers DOCTORING photos to enhance and further promote this campaign.
Noel, this is serious stuff.
EDIT: Also clearly noticing, the tone (hue and light) is totally flat along the sign, from right to left, where it moves off the shot. There should be at least a slight fading of some kind (darkening, at least) as it moves off, but there's none at all. OH... and the little logo at the top, in the middle, is prestine and totally sharp/visible, which is unnatural.

Understand Adobe is developing some serious tools which will allow a user to instill grace, dignity and humility in any subject. Until then a photog will just have to find subjects not lacking.

You're right: It was Photoshopped, to simulate shifts, tilts, & swings (lens movements) on a view camera. The only press photographer to use one (besides myself!) is David Burnett, who, like me, uses a Graflex Speed Graphic; and you have to use the ground glass to focus when using lens movements with wide-open apertures (though unlike Burnett, I also have a rangefinder cam for my 172mm Aero-Ektar lenses when they are stopped down).
Perspective corrections - simulating lens movements - are easily done in Photoshop 7 & higher by simply checking the "Perspective" box in the crop titlebar, to the right of the pixel dimensions and PPI settings. Then, the four corners of the crop box become unlocked from each other, allowing for easy correction of perspective.

If I didn't have so much invested in my old Hasselblads I might look into some "new" lenses for my old Century. I used to shoot architecture with a custom 8x10 view camera which was built sometime in the late 1890's (nearly 3&1/2 ft. of extension in the leather bellows!) with some old Leitz lenses on custom lens boards. It was stolen from my house many years ago along with a number of musical instruments and other camera equipment. I've never really gotten over the loss...
