UPDATE AT END OF POST: Todd admits to making this all up.
A truly gruesome attack occurred in a Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, suburb Wednesday evening, and given the political overtones, it's going to be very interesting to see how this disgusting incident gets reported by Obama-loving media.
A 20-year-old female McCain campaign volunteer was mugged at an ATM by an unknown assailant who got very angry when he noticed that her car had a McCain-Palin bumper sticker on it (photo courtesy Hot Air).
According to CBS4.com that's when things really got ugly (h/t NBer mattm, KDKA CBS TV News video report embedded below the fold):
Pittsburgh police are investigating after a volunteer for the Republican campaign says she was attacked by a mugger who became enraged after seeing a John McCain bumper sticker on her car last night.
According to police, the 20-year-old woman said she was robbed at an ATM at the corner of Liberty Avenue and Pearl Street in the Bloomfield area around 9pm Wednesday after leaving a Republican phone bank.
The woman told police that the suspect, described only as a dark-skinned African-American man about 6'4", stole $60 from her and became enraged after seeing a bumper sticker supporting Republican Presidential Candidate John McCain on her car.
The woman said the suspect punched and kicked her before knocking her the ground.
The McCain camp tells CBS station KDKA-TV that the victim is a 20-year-old Republican from Texas.
According to a campaign spokesperson, after seeing her bumper sticker supporting McCain, the suspect said, 'Oh you're with McCain, you're with the McCain campaign? I'm going to teach you a lesson.'"
After repeatedly hitting, kicking and threatening the woman, the McCain camp says the suspect carved a "B" in her cheek for "Barack" Obama.
Wow! Think you'll hear much about this in the coming days?
If your answer is "No," with respects to John Grisham, imagine for a moment the assailant was a white McCain supporter, and the victim a young, black, Obama campaign volunteer.
*****Update: Hot Air has the woman's photo.
*****Update 2: Additional video reports about this issue follow:
And:
*****Update 3: Todd admits she made the whole thing up:
Police sources tell KDKA that a campaign worker has now confessed to making up a story that a mugger attacked her and cut the letter "B" in her face after seeing her McCain bumper sticker. [...]
This afternoon, a Pittsburgh police commander told KDKA Investigator Marty Griffin that Todd confessed to making up the story.
The commander added that Todd will face charges; but police have not commented on what those charges will be.

October 23, 2008 - 17:53 ET by Ascended Conservativethe only way the msm will ever fall back in line is IF conservative leadership takes over one of the big 3 networks. the same thing that happed on cable (Fox becoming #1) will happen over the airwaves. then the other 2 would have no choice but to move more to the center unless they want to keep loosing viewers. perhaps the other 2 will just move even further to the left like CNN and MSNBC a.k.a. Obama "men"
October 23, 2008 - 17:25 ET by iveseenitallDo all the Obama "men" choose women to brutalize? Here in Florida, a woman's house windows were shot out because she's a McCain volunteer. A woman was attacked on the streets of New York--with her own McCain sign. A McCain woman in Texas got a visit from the Secret Service. Now this. Weather Barry wins or loses, this is only the beginning. He's got the jackboots at the ready. The Bill of Rights is going to be under assault if, God forbid, Barry wins. Mark my words.

October 23, 2008 - 19:47 ET by porpoiseboythe only pathological liar in the race is joe biden. FACT....i have seen the video.
joe biden has lied about the circumstances of the tragic deaths of his first wife & daughter. you can find the video on the net of him alluding to them having been killed by a drunk driver "although i never pursued it" ( his words ). first, the facts are that his wife turned in front of an oncoming big rig with the sun in her eyes. fact, the family of the now deceased man who drove that rig has asked biden to retract those statements that have devastaed their family. to no avail.
second, IF ( although absolutely not true ) they had been killed by a drunk driver and biden thought so, what kind of person would not pursue action to take the killer of his wife and child off the road?!?! the only reason biden has done these things is because of some sort of sick sense that it will gain him some sort of political sympathy in some circles. tell me something lower than that! then you have BHO....every time he starts a sentence with "i've always said".....he lies. for instance, "i've always said that the surge worked beyond our wildest dreams".....this was on oreilly and was the first time he had ever admitted that. btw, he did admit he was wrong on the surge, just that it worked. how's that work?

He could also give a million to the lady that has to live the rest of her life with Obama's first initial carved in her face and appologise. Obamaniacs
October 23, 2008 - 17:19 ET by Lame CherryI have been stalked, email removed in Yahoo accounts, researched, and written about by Obama supporters.
One was a black African kook living in France. I have had enough contacts with others in various problems from their information posted to having their lives threatened by Obama people that the term maniac is sound.
An elderly woman in New York was beat up by an Obama kook just last week.
Allot of people have begged the FBI to do something about their cases of being terrorized by Obama's madhouse and yet the FBI just sits on the cases.
That is one reason I'm called the enigma by the maniacs and why I wonder often just why is it none of the Conservative voices being paid huge bucks called any attention to this when Lawrence Sinclair was being brutalized.
To repeat, Larry Sinclair for going public he sucked on something Obama and did coke with him has had his life threatened, his mother's life threatened, the Obama camp and Biden syndicate had him arrested on a bogus charge in Delaware by Biden's own kid who is AG, they then threatened him with life imprisonment on a misdemeanor AND NO ONE ON THE RIGHT SAID A WORD.
Mr. Sinclair was brutalized in the custody of DC, FBI and Federal Marshals in league with the Justice Department DC prosecutor, who lost him in jail, denied him his medications as he has a brain tumor and nerve damage and his attorney couldn't find him as they denied Mr. Sinclair his phone.
Terrorists in Gitmo get better treatment than Lawrence Sinclair.
Yet not one word from Conservatives on this. Not one word so all these kooks now are beating up on women carving letters into their skin.
I hold Hannity, Limbaugh, O'Reilly, Ingraham and those on this site who never once took the information given them about what Obama's maniacs were doing to bring pressure on Justice to stop it for the attack on this young woman in Pennsylvania.
That attack and others of late happened because you sat on your hands along with Joseph Farah in what looked like a whispering campaign as it was ok to get the gay guy. Well my German friends, they came for the Jews first and then they came for the Germans second in the Nazi ranks.
Now young girls are being carved on because you people never raised a flag of protest when it was happening to someone else.
I don't support the gay deathstyle as it harms them, but I will support any American for speaking out. It is shameful in Lawrence Sinclair carried the burden and the water for the GOP in hammering Obama all summer while the big shots all got their paychecks.
Not even Newsbusters would interview him in Minneapolis at the GOP convention and Mr. Sinclair is one of the biggest supporters now of McCain and Palin.
Lawrence Sinclair warned everyone what Obama was up to and all the power sites shunned him. Now the blood is on all these people for the harm this young Lady has to endure with her entire life.
This woman wasn't isolated. She is the tip of the Obamaniac thugs.

The Gingerman, thief extraordinaire
October 23, 2008 - 19:54 ET by UnsaneIt really is too bad that you are too much of a coward to stick a gun in someone's face and steal from them. Because you want Obama to do it FOR you, legally.
Obama has PROMISED to slit my economic throat from ear to ear. Why? Because I was smart enough not to take out a mortgage I couldn't afford, and because I saved and invested wisely and prudently.
You seem perfectly content with a system of taxation that steals from the top 60% of wage earners, who pay 99.94% of the taxes, and then gives to the bottom 40% who pays the reaminder. That's crap. And that is why you and him are as gutless and cowardly as common theives.
Instead of stealing my money, or getting someone to do your stealing for your legally, get off your ass and get your own.
Whoever casts a vote for Obama-Biden is nothing more than a common thief. Whoever fails to vote against them is nothing more than a moral coward.

Also, taxes pay for programs to help you learn a new skill so you can get back on your feet. I want you to be productive and earn more so you can pay back into the system what you have taken from the system. Don't our taxes help fund the War and the soldiers who are fighting in it? Don't our taxes help senior citizens get the medical treatment they need? Don't our taxes help fill the potholes so we can get to work?

Sorry, but you cannot give 95% of taxpayers a tax cut when it is ONLY the top 60% of wage earners that pay 99.94% of the taxes. That leave the bottom, coddled 40% who pay .06% of the taxes.

Be honest......
I thought not.
People like you sicken me and I tire of your crap justifications for atrocities like this. Just because your guy BHO is the choice of 99.9% of thugs doesn't make this ok.
This attack is indicative of larger trends that have been occurring for quite some time now. The verbal, psychological and professional attacks and hooliganism have been happening for a long time. Now it is getting physical.
After spending a lot of time there, I can tell you that our country is beginning to remind me of Venezuela during the referendum period of 2003. The Chavistas were limiting free speech and spinning things like crazy. The attacks got physical there too. And, Obama has the same base as Chavez: the lowlifes and the leftist academics. And, lots of sneaky money was funding shenanigans that Chavez' team got away with. The only difference is that the media tended to be against Chavez. Here, they are for the reds. Once Hugo stole the election, the real "Change" started. And fast. It was amazing.
It's scary, really it is. But, what I'm saying is no "right-wing paranoia" it is true. We need to wake up to this, or we will lose our country, just as the Venezuelans have.

October 23, 2008 - 18:57 ET by iveseenitallYou are so right. I remember not so long ago listening to a friend on the phone with his mother in Venezuela. He kept telling her to stop saying things because "they" might be listening. After the call he said that he hopes this never happens here in America. Sad. But if it does, the silence from the "liberals" will be deafening. All the poltroons who cared so much for the "rights" of the terrorists won't be fighting for your rights at all. Mark my words. America is in deep soup folks.

I guess we will call it "Baracking" in the future.
October 23, 2008 - 17:45 ET by BDIn the 1980's the media coined the phrase "Borked' to indicate someone who is falsly and ceaselessly hammered by the opposition to remove their consideration for the Supreme Court who was imminently qualified. The desire being, hurt the nominee so hard they ask to be removed from nomination.
In the 2004 election, veterans who spoke up against a former colleague who had tunred upon them and dishonored their service were ceaselessly hammered by the left and the press in an effort to get them to retract their recollections and observations of John F Kerry. This hammering was surprisingly called "Swiftboating", though the press insists the term refers to false statements about the veterans, not the candidate.
This causes me to wonder, what will the press call the unceasing criticism of anyone who disagrees with Barack Obama as a racist regardless of cause?
I guess we will call it "Baracking" in the future.

Where was John Murtha?
October 23, 2008 - 17:59 ET by pbthinkerHell, isn't this close to his district. Perhaps he should take notes here. The scary part of this is that, one of the South Florida Talk Radio Shows, the Schnitt show, has had a couple of calls from black callers saying that, once Obama wins, there's going to be reparations and white folk are all going to pay for the sins of the past. I don't know if there's a majority of people that think that way, and that's really not the point, the point is that, with all the talk about racism and Murtha talking about his redneck constituents, it's a McCain volunteer that gets mugged and cut, it's McCain signs that are being destroyed, it's people wearing McCain campaign shirts who are being accused, based on nothing, of being racist. Someone needs to call the Democrats and Obama on this.

October 23, 2008 - 19:51 ET by pbthinkerFirst of all, I don't recall mentioning Obama. I don't believe Obama had a thing to do with this. I did, however, mention John Murtha, who has been telling people, like the assailer here, that Western Pennsylvania is loaded with bigots that won't vote for a black man. Is it surprising that there might be a little anger at white McCain supporters, out there? It was just a thought.
As far as the phone calls to the Schnitt show are concerned, they were replayed, uncut, and they seemed to show a little anger and a desire for revenge upon anyone that doesn't support Obama. There again, if this becomes rampant, perception will become reality. What is it with the stories about potential riots, in certain cities? I didn't see Republicans rioting when Gore tried to steal the 2000 election. I doubt, even with all the ACORN stuff going on, you'd see people riot, if McCain loses, and ACORN is shown to have comitted voter fraud.
None of this would be happening had the MSM done their job and vetted Obama. They shirked their responsibilities and we're going to be left picking up the pieces.

"B" is backwards
October 23, 2008 - 18:04 ET by cayenne523Why is the "B" backwards? Does it have something to do with the photography? Just asking. I would forward this story to every person you know. If this is what is happening before the election can one imagine what will happen if Obama loses. I highly suggest if Obama loses travel in groups and carry a weapon if you have a permit. If your children are in public schools and you live in an inner city I would suggest having them stay home. It will not be safe for a white person on the streets. The first thing I thought of the "B" is backwards...but it does depend on the orientation of the mugger.
It doesn't look jagged for someone being attacked and having your face carved. The lines seem to be "clean" and the "B" distinct and centered on her cheek. It was 9 pm and dark, correct?
Let's see the video tape to prove the correct position of the mugger and to put my doubts to rest. If the incident occurred, I hope they find the bastard and throw the book at him...if not...well...

Then CNN will interview the attacker and make him the victim of racism.
BTW, Gingerbrains Palin is factually more experienced and ready to lead a country than Obama, hands down. She has executive experience as a governer and has an 80% approval rating in Alaska (among other things). Her record speaks for itself. Palin is more than qualified to be VP and has a better resume than Obama, who is running for president. Seriously! The only thing Obama ever ran was his failed housing & education "community projects" in Chicago. While the entire democratic led congress approval rating has been 10%, even lower than Bush - 1 person. Go ahead and solidfy their power and you will regret it, America will regret it.

They took an unfounded story about a Republican yelling "kill him" and blasted it all over TV but yet they can't be bothered to investigate something like this. I would like to know what actually happened, but it looks like once again I'll have to depend on the alternate media to find out.

Race Relations
October 23, 2008 - 20:24 ET by Gat New YorkFor a man who is only part Black, was brought up by white people, was freinds with white people, went to school almost entirely with white people in privileged schools, he is doing more to reverse race relations than any person I know.
He has created a campaign that frames every disagreement with Obama as "racist" - - - and there is not exception. Obama has disguntingly called Clinton racist and now McCain racist.
This poor girl's attack is a direct result of the actions of the Obama campaign and the racism they have been propagating.
As I said, the end result of this will be very damaged race relations that I do not see healing quickly.

The forces of Obama are out there forcefully taking away people's hard-earned money and marking those who have the audacity to disagree with him. This is really scary stuff! Is this the "change" that he has been talking about? And what about the "hope"?

October 23, 2008 - 21:51 ET by nicholas nicklebyDo you guys remember when there was a post about how Obama had tried to delay troop withdrawal from Iraq and there was outrage expressed over the fact that no one in the MSM other than Fox was talking about it? ( http://newsbusters.o... )
And then it turned out that it wasn't being talked about much because it never actually happened ( http://blogs.abcnews... ).
Now, I'm not going to argue that history infallibly teaches us what will happen, but it is a useful guide sometimes.
So, why is no one talking about this outrageous crime? Possibly because it's not true.
But I could be wrong, and it may be true, but as other people here have pointed out, even Michelle Malkin advises caution when it comes to this story ( http://michellemalki... ).

October 23, 2008 - 22:42 ET by ckc1227"So, why is no one talking about this outrageous crime? Possibly because it's not true."
How do they know it's not true? That sure didn't stop them from reporting that someone said "kill him" about Obama at a McCain rally despite that not being true, did it? Hell, that even made it into the last debate, despite it not being true.
They don't know if it's true or not, they only know what has been alleged, and that's what they should report. If it turns out that she lied, then they should rightfully report that as well.
PS
The Washington Times apparently didn't get Tapper's memo.
Obama's Economic plan: more taxes, more spending, more regulation. Prosperity here we come.
you're right about that, but
October 23, 2008 - 23:40 ET by nicholas nicklebyhey CKC,
You're right about part of that--how do they know it's not true? The media doesn't know that absolutely, and will only know after the police investigate. Which, according to this report at CNN, they are doing ( http://politicaltick... ). (Which is my way of saying, see, they are talking about it at other sites.)
On the other hand, as you've seen, a bunch of people on the right--such as Michelle Malkin and a bunch of commenters here--have commented that something doesn't seem right here. So, do we know for sure that this is not true? No, but the evidence seems to lead us that way, which may be why the other news-sites are not trumpeting this story just yet.
So, a) CNN's website is reporting it, b) the police are investigating, and c) the evidence we have seems to suggest that it's not a true story.
(Compare to the "Kill him" line: a) it was reported on (thanks to a reporter who said she heard it--I'm sure if this was a FNC reporter getting attacked, we'd hear more about it); b) it was investigated; c) there was no evidence that showed that it was wrong before the investigation, but when it was disproven, they reported that too.)

er, ok
October 23, 2008 - 23:17 ET by nicholas nicklebyBut CT, I just pointed out that sometimes, when people jump to the conclusion about certain stories, they're proven wrong.
Which is actually true, even on this site.
Like, remember when there was a post about how Obama tried to delay troop withdrawal from Iraq (wrong), or how there was a lot of fraud that kept "An American Carol" down in the box office (not demonstrably wrong, but no evidence suggested that it was true).
I think this is not a partisan lesson--it's something that both NB and DailyKos could learn from: unless you're going to have a vigorous retraction and correction policy, you might want to investigate certain stories first.
(For instance, remember the whole "Trig is Bristol's baby!" story--yeah, I think people jumped to conclusions there.)

That is what I'm going with...for now.
Ster.
you really think this would lead off the news-cycle?
October 24, 2008 - 00:19 ET by nicholas nicklebyTurn it around: if an Obama supporter came up with a story about how they were attacked by a McCain supporter and had a "J" scratched (backwards) into their cheek, do you really think it would be on ABC/CBS/NBC/Fox?
I'm sure DailyKos would have it, but the other networks would probably be a little shy about it at first.
Really, the reason why most news-sources aren't touching this with a 10-foot pole is because it stinks on ice.
It may very well turn out to be true, but my point is that news-people are probably waiting to hear if this is actually a news-story because it looks like something made-up.
(Like, did you hear the one about the right-wing radio talk-show host who complained about the Obama flag--something that looked like an American flag, but with a big O on it? Very few people reported that, but then again, that might have been because it turned out to be Ohio's state flag.)
Wrong
October 24, 2008 - 10:21 ET by Noel SheppardWrong!
If this had been a 20-year-old, black, female Obama volunteer, and the assailant a white, male, McCain supporter, this would have lead all three evening news programs, and been today's front-page headline on NYT, WaPo, USA Today, et al.
Moreover, the victim would have done telephone conversations with all of the morning news programs! ns
I respectfully disagree
October 24, 2008 - 11:03 ET by nicholas nicklebyNoel,
I'll say it again: no matter whom it happened to or who did it, a story where the evidence is so patently questionable would not make the top of the news cycle because it's so patently questionable. (It may be true, as I've said, but being so questionable, it probably would not lead off the news-cycle.)
Now, some commenters say that this shows a double-standard since the "kill him" line was reported and investigated, but there's two problems with that argument.
First, this case is being reported and investigated, though it is being reported tentatively because the evidence is so questionable.
Second, the evidence of the "kill him" line was itself less questionable--after all, it's not like someone yelled out "And if mine eyes can wound, now let them kill thee!" or some other questionable phrase.
(I mean, who yells out lines from Shakespeare's "As You Like It" under any condition? If someone yelled out that, it would be--like the B being backwards or upside-down--questionable as evidence.)
The Duke Lacrosse team rape
October 24, 2008 - 16:42 ET by NL207The Duke Lacrosse team rape hoax is existence proof refuring your entire argument. That ACTUAL EVENT was a litmus test as to how the MSM would portray the assault/robbery scenario described by Noel. We have no need to suppose how the MSM might behave in such circumstances. They have already shown us.
In similar fashion, we now witness in this case a contrasting conduct. The truth/falsehood of the charge leveled in this case is irrelevant to the discussion, as the Duke case allegations proved to be false. Whether these charges are founded or not has no bearing on media conduct. The media presupposed the guilt of the Duke Lacrosse players and trumpeted the headlines for days. They have uttered nary a peep about this case and in so doing have exposed their hypocrisy, bias, racism and inconsistency.
Last, I have $20 that says these charges have basis in fact.
okay, let's look at this
October 24, 2008 - 22:07 ET by nicholas nicklebyNL,
The Duke Lacross Rape hoax gets mentioned a lot, and I don't even remember it (except for the fact that it was a hoax), so maybe you'll know:
Was there anything in the initial evidence presented that flagged this story as fishy? I mean, I remember it being at first simply a "he said/she said" (er, "they said/she said") sort of case.
Here, however, the very first piece of evidence--the wounds on her face--flags this story as fishy. Michelle Malkin noted that from the beginning, as did some other people.
So, the difference between the cases (if I'm remembered the Duke case correctly) is that this hoax was clearly questionable from the beginning, whereas that hoax was not.

Even the other dancer there quickly changed her account, but Nifong persisted anyway.

Different priorities in terms of crime
October 24, 2008 - 23:41 ET by nicholas nicklebyOkay, that's fair, it was a well-publicized case, but I'm less interested in false allegations of rape than I am in allegations of terrorism. Like, I'm sure we could have a fruitful discussion of Richard Jewell being implicated (wrongly) in the Atlanta Olympic bombing, '96.
You're right, though, here's a case where I perhaps should have read the Wikipedia article first. (You know, I should read the article before I rewrite it with a liberal bias.)
Anyway, if we're going to talk about historical amnesia, didn't I just point out how NB posters sometimes put stories into print which then turn out to be untrue (Obama delays troop withdrawal, "American Carol" victim of massive fraud, McCain supporter attacked).
You'd think that people would learn from history that happened within the past few weeks. ;-)
(On the other hand, as I've said before, maybe the internet is made for spurious allegations on the chance that some of them might be true. I'm on the fence about that one.)

absolutely agreed noel
October 25, 2008 - 12:20 ET by candanceThe dook case *was* fishy from the start but Nifong pushed it to get re-elected in a heavily black/poor city where dook students are seen as outsiders. That's not speculation - it's historical fact. Many things about that case did not pass the sniff test from the beginning yet the MSM looked for ways to validate it.
I do agree that we saw an initial double standard at play. Even when the boys started challenging the press and leaking out the contradictory details, the MSM reported them halfheartedly. We also saw verbose, dramatic, almost gleeful reports of how the case proved there was still a gap between blacks and whites. The media actively took her side in the face of contradiction and almost suceeded in crucifying those innocent boys.
And now lefties have the nerve to say the details of that case are obscure. All the lefties on here running victory laps, I urge some intellectually honesty on your side too.
Change is what you're left with when you've spent all your dollars.
i feel implicated in that...
October 25, 2008 - 12:41 ET by nicholas nicklebySomehow, whenever something political happens, someone makes a sweeping generalization about the other side--"liberals lie, conservatives lie."
One reason why I take the time to talk about books, movies, tv shows is to show that, although I may have liberal feelings in some ways, I'm also just a person, i.e., not so easily reduced to a stereotype. (I also like to do that because it keeps me honest in terms of not stereotyping the people here.)
So, to respond to your last paragraph, which I feel implicated by, though you might not have meant it to refer to me. First, I never said the Duke case was obscure, I said I had forgotten it. (That is, I placed the lack on myself--not "oh, we'll never know what happened, the case is obscure," but "I've forgotten it--if I was really interested in it, I would look it up.")
Second, as for victory laps, since I didn't call this one correctly, I don't feel a victory lap coming on. That is, I counseled skepticism, but I never said it was a hoax. People who called BS on the story from the first, both left and right, can enjoy their victory lap.
So, just to be clear: I'm not blaming you for what Ashley Todd did just because you're both McCain supporters (I assume--at least, we could say you're both against Obama, right?), so I hope you don't lump all liberals into one basket. It may be easier to drown us like kittens when we're in one basket, but it's not fair to the range of opinions and actions.

sweeping comments
October 24, 2008 - 23:54 ET by nicholas nicklebyR1,
Does it really make sense to you to claim that every comment of mine should be thrown out because I don't remember the facts in a hoaxed rape case from 2 years ago? (And yes, if you care for it, you have my permission to forget about the whole Ashley Todd case by 2010, just in time for those elections.)
Now, as for the Duke rape case, I agree with you that Mangum (the accuser--I looked it up on Wikipedia!) clearly turned out to be not credible as an accuser, and there were problems with evidence from the start, and a lot of other shenanigans (Mike Nifong seems to be chief among the shenanigan-ers).
And there was a lot of instant support for Mangum and a lot of vituperation and harassment against the players despite the lack of credible evidence. Some people were too quick to jump on the bandwagon there. (It's why I counsel skepticism.)
But the main difference still seems to be that issue of "credible evidence": Mangum's story fell apart (it didn't have any credible evidence to support it, which people found out when they investigated--which in no way excuses people for presuming guilt).
Whereas in the Ashley Todd case, the evidence from the beginning was INcredible--the main evidence she had was her wounds, which didn't seem realistic. (She twittered the whole incident? The assailant carved the B backwards, gently?)
Well, I have no doubts that I haven't convinced you with that distinction between a lack of credible evidence (Mangum) and a presence of incredible evidence (Todd), but now, after revisiting that, I think we can all breathe a collective sigh of relief that the Pittsburgh PD or DA's office doesn't have a Nifong-type on its payroll.
A few differences Nick
October 25, 2008 - 00:05 ET by RESTLESS 1First, if not foremost, is the difference in MSM coverage. I'll let you figure that one out on your own.
Second, Mangum accused actual people. Those player's lives are forever changed. The coach lost his job over a lie, and his kids still pay for it.
Third, the evidence "fell apart", your word about Todd, just as quickly. Which brings me back to the first point. Why, if you truly did not know about this then, can you find prominent retraction by the media??? Bias??? Yeah. That's why this site is here.
Lastly, I agree with you that there is not a "nifong" figure here, although it is a moot point. Todd did not finger real people.

October 25, 2008 - 01:12 ET by nicholas nicklebySo you think I'm a liar? But R1, you've seen me here before, you've seen me admit to not knowing things before. Heck, one of my first posts here was me admitting (to Noel) that I only skimmed his post ( http://newsbusters.o... ).
Frankly, while I have messed up some of my arguments (see my post re: Conservative economists prefer Obama--Noel pointed out that I didn't read the internals of that poll carefully enough: http://newsbusters.o... ), I feel like I've done enough to show good faith: never falsifying information (though sometimes needing a second-opinion/-reader), always either providing links to evidence or backing off claims I couldn't prove, and even providing evidence that might hurt my case (as when I showed that FactCheck.org, which I used as source of info, is funded by the same Annenberg Foundation that was behind the Chicago Annenberg Challenge: http://newsbusters.o... ).
So, given my past actions, I don't think you have any cause to be calling me a liar.
Now, getting back to the Duke Lacross rape scandal of 2006, your main point here is that the MSM treated that case differently (and that's why the lives of these real people are affected--because the MSM put their names out and treated the story without skepticism), whereas my main point is that the cases are different.
I'm not defending the reactions--some people jumped too quick to judge that case--and some of the ways that the case was covered, in terms of releasing people's names, for instance, was definitely wrong.
I guess what you see as bias, I see as another effect of the 24-hour news cycle trying to get people to watch with the most sensational edutainment the networks can find. (Except maybe now they've learned their lesson about vetting stories and holding off on stories that don't seem right.)
(As for retractions, corrections, or coverage of the exoneration of the players: here's CNN, http://www.cnn.com/2... , or if you prefer, a transcript of their international version, http://edition.cnn.c... ; here's an NPR story about the lacrosse team, which includes mention of the players' innocence, http://www.npr.org/t... ; here's a WaPo article about Nifong's sentencing, which includes mention of the players' innocence, http://www.washingto... ; here's the ABC news story about the exoneration, http://abcnews.go.co... . I mean, if you want to argue that they're not front-page news stories, you could argue that, but I don't think you can argue that no one covered the exoneration of the players. (Which is why I only bothered to post stories from the news organizations which most get charged with bias: CNN, NPR, WaPo, ABC. I mean, if these biased organizations wrotes articles about how the players are innocent, than other news organizations like Fox must have covered it as well.))
Nick,
October 26, 2008 - 20:55 ET by RESTLESS 1I unfairly lumped you in with others on this site. For that, I apologize. I mean, you libs all look alike on the internet. :)
The timing of the MSM "learning their lesson", still seems fishy to me. They've known the lesson, but seem to only act on this info. when liberals are the ones who may be tainted.
And those retractions you have linked to are not a prominent as the accusations in the first place.
Anyway, sorry again for jumping off the handle.

What's more, there retractions regarding have been minimal.
I have admitted my rush to comment, but the bias argument as to how the msm would cover it if it were reversed, still stands.

Media Manipulation
October 24, 2008 - 03:32 ET by ChattychitoNich nick,
The media wont report it because it may be true, One of their Obama mad theives does not just an assault and robbery but a Hidious race crime against a poor white girl from Texas.
most likely the robber was dyslexic so to him the B was right side up and out.
Bad for Obamalicity. mums the word on the big 3
it should not be reported as
October 24, 2008 - 10:19 ET by patmac49it should not be reported as true or false until proven so...that is why we have police investigation and i am sure the officers involved are more than capable ...we had a somewhat similiar incident around here some years back which unfortunetly turned out to be a hoax but quite a few individuals where slandered because too many believed the story as true without proof
It may have been faked and
October 24, 2008 - 13:32 ET by semolina_filcherIt may have been faked and staged but it doesn't mean can't happen...
uh...
October 24, 2008 - 13:40 ET by nicholas nicklebyI assume you said the same thing about a McCain supporter yelling "kill him," semolina?
Never happened.
October 24, 2008 - 14:08 ET by BDNever happened.
Point out wherever I may
October 24, 2008 - 14:20 ET by semolina_filcherPoint out wherever I may have said it. The lady may have faked the assault but it doesn't mean assaulting anyone over the elections can't happen. These are dangerous time, agree?
Try again Nick Head...
October 24, 2008 - 14:29 ET by semolina_filcherEmploying a typical, liberal tactic trying to bait someone into saying something he/she didn't. Lame, Nick. What part of "don't want to advocate violence" don't you understand?
didn't make my point
October 24, 2008 - 14:59 ET by nicholas nicklebysorry, Semolina, I may not have made the point well.
You said that just because this was a hoax, doesn't mean it couldn't happen. Now I agree with you in general, electoral violence could happen, and we should do all we can to make sure that it doesn't happen on either side.
(And one way to do that would be if we were not so quick to run with rumors and stories about violence that don't make sense.)
Now, onto the point where we might disagree: what I meant to ask above was, when you heard that Dana Millbank's story (about someone yelling "kill him") was disproven, did you say, "well it could happen"? (I wasn't trying to put words in your mouth, man, I was asking you a question--hence the question mark at the end of that earlier post.) I mean, it was disproven in that case, but it could happen, correct? Someone could yell out "kill him," right? (I mean, people have already yelled out "terrorist" and, I think it was "treason" loud enough to be picked out by microphones.)
Or do you only see threats and violence coming from the left?
When I was an active duty MP
October 23, 2008 - 22:41 ET by jay_1975When I was an active duty MP I responded to many domestic violence calls. From the picture, it looks fake. First the backwards "B" looks to have been made while looking in the mirror and there is no swelling around the bruised eye and no broken blood vessels in the eye itself. The face is to symetrical to have any swelling and, to me, looks fake. Time will tell, but know the facts before spouting rage and making assumptions.
Pre Vote Violence just the beginning
October 24, 2008 - 03:14 ET by ChattychitoGreat article Noel.
With all the hype of violent McCain supporters agaist Barack supporters (of which there are not one actual report just rumors), it seems the only ones geting violent are Barak Obama supporters after all. In the last week I have read of 6 McCain supporters being harrased, beaten, shot up homes and now physically violated with the mark of the "B"east.
This is just the beginning. If Obama loses his supporters will riot in the streets and kill many including white Obama supporters. If he wins we will see the turn of racism(what we tern reverse racism) and all races but black races will be treated as scum of the earth by the new socialist black majority. not only that we will see a collapse of the free market enterprise and the socialization of our Nation completed in the first 24 months of his presidency.
No matter who wins it is a lose lose situation

A tale of two newspapers
October 24, 2008 - 06:57 ET by Roger the ShrubberA tale of two newspapers continues... Left-wing rag Post-Gazette finally catches up with what the Tribune Review reported last night, by basically copying the Trib's story (see one of my posts below).
The Trib does its job as a reporter of news by trumping the PG (once again), updating their story with the following:
Police planned to administer a polygraph test to Ashley Todd, 20, because her statements about the attack conflict with evidence from the Citizens Bank ATM where she claims the incident occurred, police said.
I encourage everybody to hold off judging whether this is a legit story or not. I am posting this to show how the PG does a half-assed quite often, while the Trib gets little credit for actually being a good newspaper, even though they are owned by the eveeeel Mellon-Scaife family.

October 24, 2008 - 07:05 ET by Cool ArrowI was scraping my face in front of the mirror this morning and scratched a backwards "B" into it.
I ain't buying nuthin' yet.
LYDSEXICS UNTIE!
True or not...
October 24, 2008 - 08:31 ET by Karma...this story is about mental health and not about the candidates. I agree that the MSM likely would have jumped all over this if the political affiliations were reversed, but we have no way of knowing that for sure.
Neither candidate should even remotely be held responsible for what happened here, whatever the truth may be. Without witnesses or video, this incident should not have been a story until the facts would write it. Even then, neither candidate should be accountable for the actions of a zealot.
That doesn't change the fact that Obama sucks incredibly more than McCain, in my opinion.
Don't wanna advocate
October 24, 2008 - 11:21 ET by semolina_filcherDon't wanna advocate violence here but folks, here we are, what the f*** are we going to do when we are intimidated and harassed by Obamites? Obama may have his qu'ran but in my Bible there is that passage about "an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth"...
you don t want to advocate
October 24, 2008 - 15:57 ET by patmac49you don t want to advocate violence...that is the meaning of an eye for an eye...that poor girl has problems and by no stretch would mccain be resposible, that would not have prevent people with exacting revenge for something that did not happen..your bible says an eye for an eye..it also says "vengence is mine sayeth the lord"..it would be nice if we remembered all the bible..
mirror image
October 24, 2008 - 11:29 ET by lotrI just viewed the photograph in a mirror, and indeed, the "B" is clearly seen correctly printed.
So unless the photograph was reversed (a possibility that hasn't been verified either way), or unless she did it in a trance while mumbling "redrum redrum," it would unfortunately appear that she did it while looking in a mirror.
