Sam Donaldson: Socialism Has Washed Over Capitalism

ABC's Sam Donaldson has validated Joe the Plumber's worst fears: socialism has indeed washed over capitalism.

Maybe worse, Donaldson is clearly less unhappy about this than our new campaign spokesman from Ohio.

Such appeared to be the case when the former White House correspondent published a rather ominous commentary at ABCNews.com Tuesday both in written and video form (emphasis added, h/t Extreme Mortman via Glenn Reynolds):

Yes, socialism has now washed over free market capitalism and only a very brave, or foolhardy few would protest.

The federal government has nationalized the banks, the U.S. Treasury and Federal Reserve doors have opened wide and taxpayer money flows faster than quicksilver, and this week, the presidential candidates have each come up with new, immediate relief plans that have the government intervening in a way that costs a lot more money. The candidates have realized, late, but finally, that the economic pain Americans are feeling must be felt now -- thank you, Bill Clinton -- not next January when one of them becomes president. [...]

Make no mistake; we are living in a new age. Just as we will never go back to a pre-9/11 security mentality, we will never go back to the free market, deregulated economic policies in the same degree that brought us to this crisis.

Doesn't Sam seem to be smiling in the video?

Wishful thinking

I'm not a huge fan of what was done to shore up the banking system, but Sam is getting a bit ahead of himself with the "US is now a Socialist Country" thinking.

Sorry Sam, not now and not ever.

Why work

When the pies are free.

Socialsim doesn't fail, it just runs out of other people's money to give away.

snooker... You are almost

snooker...

You are almost ahead of me. I have been planning a huge email campaign in case Obama does win the White House in Nov. My plan is this... as soon as we find out it's official, I will unleash an email avalanche to our fellow citizens, telling them that they should all quit their jobs immediately so Obama can now take care of them. This should last about 3-4 months, then the people of our great nation will burn down Washington DC.... Starting to rebuild our broken government will immediately put millions back to work, and put Obama on either the unemployment line, or behind bars!

Who is John Gault

I seem to remember hearing that Hollyweird wanted to make a movie based on Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand.  Maybe they figured it be best to not give anybody any ideas.

Don't be so sure.

Don't be so sure.  Socialism looks good to a lot of people who can't stand the thought of someone else having more than they do.

And Donaldson isn't the only one who thinks America is ready for socialism.

This is from the Financial Times. After commenting on a joke McCain made the other night about Obama and the financial crisis, they had this to say:

Nor, in spite of the acuity of Mr McCain’s punchline, would a dramatic
stock market recovery be likely to dent Mr Obama’s fortunes. It would
come too late to restore the American public’s badly shaken confidence
in their financial system
and in the free-trade economy that Mr McCain
so gallantly defends.

(emphasis added)

When you hear of someone "gallantly" defending something, doesn't it give you an image of a hopeless cause????

So they too apparently think that this latest mess makes America ripe for a centrally-managed approach.

From talking head to paper boy...

Under Socialism Donaldson will go from high paid talking head living in a high priced home to a $0.10 per day paper delivery boy living on the street (he has no other skills). First thing a socialist dictator does is do away with any media source not controlled by him.

Sam Donaldson, is he still alive?

Be careful what you wish for.

Sam may be right on this but, as I said, be careful what you wish for, with a socialist president and congress, you could get surprises you never dreamed of.

"Just as we will never go back to a pre-9/11 security mentality, we will never go back to the free market, deregulated economic policies in the same degree that brought us to this crisis."

On the bright side, just look at the beginning of this, we're already back to a pre-9/11 security mentality.  Where we don't want to go, with the market, is a liberal, don't look too close while we're forcing the market to do things that don't make sense, mentality.

we will never go back to the free market, deregulated economic policies in the same degree that brought us to this crisis.

Go back to the free market, deregulated economic policies?  To suggest that we will never go back to free market, deregulated economic policies creates the false impression that we ever went there in the first place.  We didn't...and that's why the economy is in the mess it's in.  That's right, because of an overly-influential, parasitic government.

But this begs a question: If we're stuck in a socialist state, does that mean that the extra tax money that is stolen from us for "universal health care" will cover Sam Donaldson's replacement toupees?

 What a weenie.

Just as we will never go back to a pre-9/11 security mentality, we
will never go back to the free market, deregulated economic policies in

Man up Donaldson. He is the typical liberal. He wants govt. to run everything. He and those like him run for the hills at the first sign of adversity.Just like with the Iraq war he has already surrendered  and thrown in the towel. He wants to turn this country into a socialist state like France or Amsterdam.

The guy is a wuss.

Victory in Iraq.

Liberals suck.

McCain for Preznint.

Sam Donaldson is fibbing.

...we will never go back to the free market, deregulated economic policies in the same degree that brought us to this crisis.

Sorry, Sam, but it wasn't a free market, deregulated economy that brought us to this sorry point. It was meddling, do-gooder government policies that backfired badly when the laws of unintended consequences finally caught up to them.

Well, at least now we know Sam's true colors, as he is way too happy about all this. Then again, was there ever really any doubt?

He is right about one thing, though. Free-enterprise is dead in the country.

Well, Dave, that's their

Well, Dave, that's their story and they're stickin' to it!

Did you forget?  It was "the failed Bush policies of the past eight years...."

I'm so mad I can't even believe it. People just want someone to give them a free lunch. I agree free enterprise is dead...and by the time people realize how far into socialism we are it will be too late.  The things they are talking about doing are things that are just about impossible to undo.

MB,

"People are just believing everything these morons say..."

I don't agree with that. I think the media believes that, and that's why they're comfortable with all the blatant lying they've been doing lately.

But I think the average person has finally seen through them. There will be no going back to a "pre-Obama" view of the press in this country, IMO.

motherbelt,

I am angry, too, as the American sheeple have bought the MSM's line on this the whole way.

I cannot say that this country will never return to a free-market economy (of course, our alleged free-market economy ceased to exist before I was born) but one thing is certain:  I won't live to see it.

Thank God.

ABSOLUTELY!!  Let's give

ABSOLUTELY!!  Let's give loans to anybody and everybody that needs one.  Let's give welfare to young men and women that are physically and mentally CAPABLE of working but because they don't WANT to work.  Let's bring in all the poor people from the rest of the world too and take care of them.  Heck, let's grant them all amnesty and make the hard-working earners of our society pay their medical, dental, food, rent, auto etc.

I didn't start to make any money until I was 36 years old! I spent 4 miserably boring years at a liberal University, another 4 painful years at a law school to obtain my Juris Doctor degree.  I spent another year studying for a miserable BAR exam that took no prisoners.  Then, I spent another 2 years working in a crappy law firm doing grunt work for 18 hours a day while paying off all my school loans.  FINALLY I am starting to make a little money and Obama wants me to SHARE MY FRICKEN WEALTH with a bunch of people that didn't have the drive I had.

Why don't we just share wives too!!!!!! I hate socialism. :(

Fantastic example,

Fantastic example, MM!!!

But you know, if you're making good money now, it's only because as Dick Gephardt said, you're one of  "the winners in life's lottery."

People do well because they are "lucky."  Not through hard work!

Now that you've gotten yours, you're supposed to "give back."

The people who don't hate socialism are the ones on the "to each according to his needs" side of the equation.

Vapid stupidity

But what more can we expect from Sam? Now, he's an economist, huh? Wow, just amazing what an electronic soap-box can do to expand one's "knowledge."

On a side note, how much you want to bet that the Kos Kids will be screaming that Sam "blamed Clinton" for the economy?

Yes, they're that dense.

If all Donaldson says is

If all Donaldson says is true -- and popular, then how come the Obama campaign is almost hysterical that McCain is mentioning the S word about their candidate.

That would be SOCIALIST, by the way. Surely they would be anxious to tie this attractive socialist label to their man?

Who do you believe Sam the Socialist or Joe the Plumber?

Vote 4 change. Vote 4 anything. See Jack & Mr Shy's first campaign ad for the ONLY viable 3rd party candidate.

This is not a comment on

This is not a comment on the topic, but the economy is hot and heavy so I thought I would post.  This is very interesting, and in it a bailout is mentioned that I had never heard of.   Gee, government, go figure!

http://www.adamsmith...

"...The most notorious example came in 1997, when economists Robert C.
Merton and Myron Scholes were honoured for their work (with the late
Fischer Black) on the pricing of options - complex financial
instruments spun off from traditional investments. Scholes had been one
of the co-founders of a boutique hedge fund in the USA called Long Term
Capital Management (LTCM). The fund made annual returns of over 40% in
its first years; then, in 1998, it lost $4.6 billion overnight, and was
bailed out by the US government - the most controversial bank bailout
in US history prior to the current financial crisis
. Its sensational
failure was attributed to holes in the Black-Scholes theorem, which did
not allow sufficient room for market anomalies.

Liberal Majority

Friday's Wall Street Journal, the following article appeared in the Opinion section. A Liberal Supermajority Get ready for 'change' we haven't seen since 1965, or 1933. If the current polls hold, Barack Obama will win the White House on November 4 and Democrats will consolidate their Congressional majorities, probably with a filibuster-proof Senate or very close to it. Without the ability to filibuster, the Senate would become like the House, able to pass whatever the majority wants. Though we doubt most Americans realize it, this would be one of the most profound political and ideological shifts in U.S. history. Liberals would dominate the entire government in a way they haven't since 1965, or 1933. In other words, the election would mark the restoration of the activist government that fell out of public favor in the 1970s. If the U.S. really is entering a period of unchecked left-wing ascendancy, Americans at least ought to understand what they will be getting, especially with the media cheering it all on. The nearby table shows the major bills that passed the House this year or last before being stopped by the Senate minority. Keep in mind that the most important power of the filibuster is to shape legislation, not merely to block it. The threat of 41 committed Senators can cause the House to modify its desires even before legislation comes to a vote. Without that restraining power, all of the following have very good chances of becoming law in 2009 or 2010. - Medicare for all. When HillaryCare cratered in 1994, the Democrats concluded they had overreached, so they carved up the old agenda into smaller incremental steps, such as Schip for children. A strongly Democratic Congress is now likely to lay the final flagstones on the path to government-run health insurance from cradle to grave. Mr. Obama wants to build a public insurance program, modeled after Medicare and open to everyone of any income. According to the Lewin Group, the gold standard of health policy analysis, the Obama plan would shift between 32 million and 52 million from private coverage to the huge new entitlement. Like Medicare or the Canadian system, this would never be repealed. The commitments would start slow, so as not to cause immediate alarm. But as U.S. health-care spending flowed into the default government options, taxes would have to rise or services would be rationed, or both. Single payer is the inevitable next step, as Mr. Obama has already said is his ultimate ideal. - The business climate. "We have some harsh decisions to make," Speaker Nancy Pelosi warned recently, speaking about retribution for the financial panic. Look for a replay of the Pecora hearings of the 1930s, with Henry Waxman, John Conyers and Ed Markey sponsoring ritual hangings to further their agenda to control more of the private economy. The financial industry will get an overhaul in any case, but telecom, biotech and drug makers, among many others, can expect to be investigated and face new, more onerous rules. See the "Issues and Legislation" tab on Mr. Waxman's Web site for a not-so-brief target list. The danger is that Democrats could cause the economic downturn to last longer than it otherwise will by enacting regulatory overkill like Sarbanes-Oxley. Something more punitive is likely as well, for instance a windfall profits tax on oil, and maybe other industries. - Union supremacy. One program certain to be given right of way is "card check." Unions have been in decline for decades, now claiming only 7.4% of the private-sector work force, so Big Labor wants to trash the secret-ballot elections that have been in place since the 1930s. The "Employee Free Choice Act" would convert workplaces into union shops merely by gathering signatures from a majority of employees, which means organizers could strongarm those who opposed such a petition. The bill also imposes a compulsory arbitration regime that results in an automatic two-year union "contract" after 130 days of failed negotiation. The point is to force businesses to recognize a union whether the workers support it or not. This would be the biggest pro-union shift in the balance of labor-management power since the Wagner Act of 1935. - Taxes. Taxes will rise substantially, the only question being how high. Mr. Obama would raise the top income, dividend and capital-gains rates for "the rich," substantially increasing the cost of new investment in the U.S. More radically, he wants to lift or eliminate the cap on income subject to payroll taxes that fund Medicare and Social Security. This would convert what was meant to be a pension insurance program into an overt income redistribution program. It would also impose a probably unrepealable increase in marginal tax rates, and a permanent shift upward in the federal tax share of GDP. - The green revolution. A tax-and-regulation scheme in the name of climate change is a top left-wing priority. Cap and trade would hand Congress trillions of dollars in new spending from the auction of carbon credits, which it would use to pick winners and losers in the energy business and across the economy. Huge chunks of GDP and millions of jobs would be at the mercy of Congress and a vast new global-warming bureaucracy. Without the GOP votes to help stage a filibuster, Senators from carbon-intensive states would have less ability to temper coastal liberals who answer to the green elites. - Free speech and voting rights. A liberal supermajority would move quickly to impose procedural advantages that could cement Democratic rule for years to come. One early effort would be national, election-day voter registration. This is a long-time goal of Acorn and others on the "community organizer" left and would make it far easier to stack the voter rolls. The District of Columbia would also get votes in Congress -- Democratic, naturally. Felons may also get the right to vote nationwide, while the Fairness Doctrine is likely to be reimposed either by Congress or the Obama FCC. A major goal of the supermajority left would be to shut down talk radio and other voices of political opposition. - Special-interest potpourri. Look for the watering down of No Child Left Behind testing standards, as a favor to the National Education Association. The tort bar's ship would also come in, including limits on arbitration to settle disputes and watering down the 1995 law limiting strike suits. New causes of legal action would be sprinkled throughout most legislation. The anti-antiterror lobby would be rewarded with the end of Guantanamo and military commissions, which probably means trying terrorists in civilian courts. Google and MoveOn.org would get "net neutrality" rules, subjecting the Internet to intrusive regulation for the first time. It's always possible that events -- such as a recession -- would temper some of these ambitions. Republicans also feared the worst in 1993 when Democrats ran the entire government, but it didn't turn out that way. On the other hand, Bob Dole then had 43 GOP Senators to support a filibuster, and the entire Democratic Party has since moved sharply to the left. Mr. Obama's agenda is far more liberal than Bill Clinton's was in 1992, and the Southern Democrats who killed Al Gore's BTU tax and modified liberal ambitions are long gone. In both 1933 and 1965, liberal majorities imposed vast expansions of government that have never been repealed, and the current financial panic may give today's left another pretext to return to those heydays of welfare-state liberalism. Americans voting for "change" should know they may get far more than they ever imagined.

Socialism

yes Sam you're right Socialism has washed over capitalism and we will all suffer greatly for it.  If you thought you could do the right things, study, work hard, stay off drugs and eventually you will become successful and wealthy, think again. Now hard work won't have anything to do with success. It will all depend on race, sex, sexual preference, and other bs to influence success. If you work hard and do the right thing it will only promise you'll pay higher taxes. If you worked hard all you life to finally be able to enjoy the fruits of your labor, forget it unless you're black or gay you have to pay.  If you want a nice house it will only matter if you're black if they'll give you credit, White straights are scum and will get nothing but a bill. Messiah Obama is in charge to spread the wealth around.
