For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: Powell endorses Obama.

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell crossed party lines this morning to endorse Sen. Barack Obama for president, the most prominent GOP defection yet of the 2008 campaign.

First off, is this really that surprising? Powell has been bashing the Bush administration for years, and has by no means been someone Republicans could count on for support.

Secondly, how important is this endorsement? Is Powell at this point in time a powerful enough figure to sway Republicans, Independents, or undecideds into Obama's camp? Or, despite how much coverage this will get from a fawning media for the next 72 hours, will this not be the game-changer they most certainly will claim it to be?

Colin Powell

IMO opinion it is a major endorsement, but might not make a huge difference seeing there is barely 2 1/2 weeks left till election.

Real life video games are cool

Then that clinches it.

If it is a majordomo endorsement in Shawn228's opinion opinion, then the game is over.

I am changing my vote now.

Oh wait, this just in. Shawn221 endorses McCain!

Changed back. Too bad. So sad.

IMO opinion it is a major endorsement, but...

IMO is an acronym of "IN MY OPINION"

Colin Powell meet Benedict Arnold

So, Colin Powell turns out to be Benedict Arnold after all. Oh well, it just confirms what most of us have suspected about him for some time.

Yeah, this endorsement is going to be the centerpiece of the MSM "coverage" for most of the week. It will be right up there with this "twelve-point lead" for Obama I have been hearing about all morning.

-Dave

Dave---

I am in a state of shock. I held Colin Powell in the highest esteem. I respected him as an American among Americans. I thought of him as a man who happened to be black. Now I think of him as an Afro-American. Not because he decided to go for Obama, but because  of the reasons he cited. He did not use the logic for his reasons that I thought he had.

misterbill,

Notice Mr. Powell was very quick to claim that this isn't about race, which is why I believe that is exactly what motivated him.

Like you, I once held the fmr. general in high esteem as well, but he committed the unforgivable in turning on Mr. Bush in the manner in which he did, as far as I am concerned. I lost a great deal of respect for him when he pulled that classless move.

I considered it a flagrant act of disloyalty shown to a man who had elevated him to a very high position in the federal government. If he disagreed with Mr. Bush, fine, then he should have quietly resigned and exited the scene.

What I find truly troubling (not to mention puzzling) is that he, a former military officer, has now endorsed a person who I believe despises the United States military, if not the very country it represents, with every ounce of his existence.

-Dave

I concur!

When the going got tough, Colin Powell bailed. twice.

Sincerely,

a Veteran of a 1000 psychic wars.

Dave

I've never been a fan of Colin Powell.  After Gulf War I, I did some reading.  Colin Powell made it to 4 star general and CJCS without having commanded anything larger than a Brigade.  That to me says it all.  Political Animal....period, paragraph, end of story.

On the flip side, one of our most dynamic and successful combat commanders, Stormin' Norman Schwartzkopf, was a troop general.  He gave up a prestigious command to do a stint with troops in Alaska, and then took the very unglamorous (at the time) CENTCOM.  He may have been in the right place at the right time, but his philosophy and obvious leadership shines through.  His biography reads like a novel, BTW.

So, Colin Powell's endorsement of The One didn't surprise me in the least...it's what political animals do...two more words in support of my thesis, Wesley Clarke.

In his own words (19 seconds):  This man is qualified to be VP?

I definitely would have

I definitely would have Schwartzkopf in charge of the surge. No way I would ever consider Powell good enough for that responsibility.

J,

Yeah, I read some similar things about him about that time, as well. Powell was good at being a yes-man, but he didn't actually have to claw his way up through the ranks.

Speaking of Clarke, have you heard anything from him lately?

LOL-I think they have him tied up that room with Michelle.

-Dave

Dave,

Maybe Clarke has been assigned to stand guard over Michelle.  ;^)

Powell was one of the few Republicans with any integrity and common sense while he was hung out to dry by the party during the barrage of lies leading up to america's biggest mistake, the Iraq invasion!

Can you name even one?

And, as I recall, the UN fully authorized the removal of Hussien from power, a point that many of Mr. Bush's detractors appear to have conveniently forgotten about.

Hey Randy

They found stockpiles of WMD material in Iraq in 2003. We've been safe for 7 years . DUH! You "liberals" never let facts get in the way of your ideology--sad.

NEVER,NEVER trust a "liberal"

Powell

Racist ! !  Read my tag line...

NEVER,NEVER trust a "liberal"

John Kerry II ?

"I was for the war, before I was against it" (something like that)

Congress voted for war, so blame them, not Pres Bush. He was just doing his duty to obey The Iraq Joint War Resolution of Oct, 2002. Had he not taken us to war after Congress voted this Resolution into law, not only would Iran be spinning its yellow-cake into weapons, as it is now, Saddam Hussein would be doing the same with his 600 tons of yellow-cake, enough for 142 nuclear weapons (which we removed this past summer). And in that case, because Pres Bush failed to do what the War Resolution said he must do, Democrats would be calling for Pres Bush's impeachment for not stopping Saddam from now making nuclear weapons.

In light of all of the above, Mr Powell's endorement of Obama is, IMHO, for racial reasons, since clearly Mr Powell had access to the same intel and clearly stated in no uncertain terms we should have gone to war, PERIOD.

What surprise?

If anyone is surprised at this they have not been paying attention to Powell over the years. He has never been a conservative, even in uniform. At best he has been a left leaning moderate and at worst an unabashed opportunist...even in uniform. After all is said and done, race still trumps substance. For a man of Powell's experience with world despots to endorse Obama speaks directly to the depth of his own character. The timing of his endorsement is suspect as well. It turns out Powell is just another racist in an expensive suit. One good thing is coming out of this election; all the roaches are finally being exposed to the light. No going back now.

Would have been far more

Would have been far more surprising if Powell had endorsed McCain. He's never been politically conservative, nor much of a Republican.

Celator

Roger that, Powell is a member of the "Opportunist" Party like so many others we have serving in the Government.

No surprise here,

Powell showed his true colors while he was SecState, IMO. I'm not sure I'd go so far as to call him a racist, but I wouldn't argue the point either. But he's no conservative, and certainly doesn't consider himself a Republican.

And never did, IMO. Thank God the "draft Powell" movement never built up any steam.

"I do not... believe that the same God who has endowed us with senses, reason and intellect has intended us to forego their use."  G. Galilei

Most white racists for McCain, all black racists for Obama

You have to applaud Powell for his years of service. That being said, it's pretty obvious he was either never a Republican or is, like so many other professed conservatives, putting his race first. (My guess is that it's going to be decades before Americans finally stop doing that.)

Senator Obama is one of the most liberal in Congress. Come on.

Powell's endorsement vs Joe the Plumber's, Pales in comparison

Ex politicians Endorsing Politicians is not an "Event".   Powell endorses and then disappears and will not campaign for BHO.  Joe the Plumber has "heart", Powell has "words".

As Powell said in the Bush Administration, "IF you invade Iraq, you OWN it"  . .  well, he is half right, The people of Iraq, now OWN Iraq, and the USA Liberates another few million people to the Free World Community.

All in all, I think it is going to be a LONG time before anyone Bombs America Again, and Feels Safe and Snug afterwards.

Not a biggie

I don't think his endorsing is a big deal. Michael Reagan talked about this on Friday's show. He's doing it to get back at the Bush administration for shafting him with Iraq. I'll trust Michael on this, since he knows Powell a lot better than most of us do. I don't think it'll make a big difference. You can tell he's sort of pulling a Bill Clinton. He's endorsing Obama, but won't campaign for him. He also snubbed McCain and did the tired old liberal hint of McCain's death soon after elected and how Palin won't be able to handle office. Palin would do a lot better job that Mr. Magoo Biden. We all know that. But he's just trying to stick his spears in while he can for getting speared himself. Oh well. Let the media do whatever they want. I still think people are wising up to them finally.

Politico's reporting "Retired General Colin L. Powell, one of the country's most respected Republicans, stunned both parties on Sunday by strongly endorsing Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) "

They need to read up on what "stunned" means. Powell's been hinting at this for months...

Tuari,

They also need to look up "most," "respected," and "Republican."

"I do not... believe that the same God who has endowed us with senses, reason and intellect has intended us to forego their use."  G. Galilei

Correct Joe

Gen Powell never was conservative. This is where "crossing the aisle" gets us. Liberals never cross to our side and never will.

His explanations were nonsensical

When I listened to Powell's rationale, I sadly realized it was all about race. He gave examples that didn't wash.

McCain calling Obama a Muslim? Didn't that originate with Hillary's capaign? John McCain denied it.

I found some of Powell's political contributions interesting.

So.... When McCain was

So....

When McCain was running for Senate, Powell supported him.

When McCain was running against Bush, Powell supported him.

When McCain was running for the Republican nomination, Powell supported him.

When McCain was running against Obama.... not so much.

When asked if he went to war with Iraq  to derail the impeachment vote:  “I don’t think any serious person would believe that any President would do such a thing." - President Clinton (Dec 1998).

It's the experience

It's the experience factor.  Obama has so much more than McCain, and I'm sure Powell is a pretty big experience guy.

<end sarcasm>

It gets better, Jerry,

By August 8 of this year, it was a given that McCain would be running against Obama. And Powell still contributed to McCain.

So, what changed? Wonder if old Colin has some skeletons in his closet? Or is he just jumping parties? Cabinet position, maybe?

After all, he has "experience."

"I do not... believe that the same God who has endowed us with senses, reason and intellect has intended us to forego their use."  G. Galilei

Powell lost me

when he starting whining and complaining about "negativity" and said that it was just plain wrong to call Obama a socialist because of his tax policies.

Hrmm, let's see: raise taxes on the people the government deems have too much money, and give that money to people the government deems to not have enough. That sounds a LOT like socialism to me.

I have lost a ton of respect for Powell today.

Powell's Endorsement

I liked C. Powell but I am dissapointed in him for a couple of reasons:

1.   He says it is not race but it is

2.  He talks about negative comments by republicans but seems to conveniently forget the comments made by Obama and his followers about Clarence Thomas and all other black republicans including Condi Rice

3.  Powell just shit on all the republicans who have been so courteous and supportive of him over many many years

 4.  Republicans should rightfully come to the conclusion that no matter what efforts they make to reach out to blacks, they will NEVER support republicans or republican views agianst someone of their own race

5.  He won't say it or admit but C Powell is a racist

I think he made a huge huge personal mistake.

Never Impressed With Him

It was Schwartzkopf who won the first Gulf War - not Powell.

So I was never much impressed with Powell and as Secretary of State I always felt he was over his head.

I agree that he did this for two reasons:

1. Race

2. His thin skin and thus payback to Bush and the Republicans.

I do not think this will have any effect on the election.

Yep

It may actually have more of a negative effect on Obama than if Powell had said nothing. I don't think it will be a big deal for most as I do not think that many were convinced Powell was ever a bigtime conservative anyway. I was not impressed with him as the Chairman of JCS or as Sec of State. He was always running cross grain to Bush and should have been fired earlier rather than let him finish his tenure at the end of Bush's first term. Swartzkoff is the one who directed Desert Storm, not Powell. Powell was always a politician even while coming up the ranks in the Army. Many who know or knew him have said as much. He will now fade away into history with his endorsement after McCain / Palin win the election.

SHOCK

Shock isn't the word. I can't believe a man that ran a war and was successfull. Will vote for a man who's party called him an "Uncle Tom", Bush's "house boy". and other nasty names endorse Obama. I have a totally different  view of blacks in America then I ever have. Most of the blacks I grew up with were very much family orientated, pro life and if you want something you get it for yourself. No one took welfare or looked at the government for help.  We are living in bizzaro world. Its unbelievable!! The republicans fought a war for the blacks and helped LBJ with the civil rights of the 60's and where were the democrats.  I cant believe we are going to have a muslum socialist for a president.  This is very scary.

mommy

Issues

Colin Powell caught a lot of flak in the Bush administration... up to this point. If Booker T. Washington (the Uncle Tom of his day) were alive and he went out and endorsed Obama, public opinion for him would change as well. As it is, the media will report this as "the ultimate maverick maneuver."

My guess is that poll numbers will change 0.1% in President Obama's favor.

  This is certainly not a

This is certainly not a game changer.  Colin Powel does not have a following.  He is merely a person of interest.  But in this year when nearly all black people are supporting the skin color of their choice Powell is just another person making that choice.  In spite of Powells denying it, you won't convince me that if the democrats had nominated the exact same type of non-experienced and non-accomplished white person that Powell would have 'crossed party lines' to endorse him.

times have changed

When Powell was in the Bush administration, the left said he was an Uncle Tom, a traitor to his race, not really "down for the struggle".  It was worse when he make the administration's case at the UN for the Iraq War.  The left had nothing good to say about him.  Now that he's endorsed their darling, I'm sure all of that will have changed.

Powell

This endorsement makes me mad! How many people in the military REALLY think Obama is the best person to make sure we have a strong military? I guess Powell doesn't think it is important that we WIN the war in Iraq, rather than run out w/ our tail between our legs. I think it's always been a stretch to consider Powell a conservative but this just seems to be a spit in the face to the organization that made him who he is - the military. It's like ... hey ... I'm out now. Screw the rest of you.

Argggggggg..............

Salute

And how many military will struggle with having to salute the man who doesn't salute the flag, resists wearing a flag pin, ditched the national anthem and pledge of allegiance yesterday for a rock singer, and goes to a church where they god damn America?  I know a lot of military active and retired and they are pretty skittish about the prospect of saluting him.  The 0sshole for CIC makes them cringe.

Powell

Skin color does matter apparantly. Even though he said it wasn't (doesn't everybody say that?) it is apparant that Powell is siding with his black race. don't you know its ok for Blacks to be racist? The press will have a field day with this. A man that served and became famous in Gulf War I and then in the Bush 43 admin. he distanced himself once he was Secretary of State. He looked relieved when he stepped down and got out of the admin. He clearly did not agree with the Bush Admin.

The one thing that he gets away with that really chaps me is his knowledge that Richard Armetage his underling at the State Dept. leaked Valerie Plame's name and did not step forward to clear any of the Bush people.  He may have broken the law by being an accessory also.

But hey, its Gen. Powell. Maybe there is something for him in an Obama admin? The timing of his endorsement looks awfully selfserving  and disengenuous.

Unfortunately, this will have an impact with the "handringers" that can't make a decision.

Get ready for Socialism, communism, marxism and all the left wing nuts running the gov't.

I trust Condi Rice as much as I trust Powell too

These black politicians seem to have a real sweet spot in their hearts for this socialist friend of terrorists fake Obama.  Didn't Armstrong Williams and JC Watts say they were having a hard time deciding on who to vote for?

It is very hard for me to trust a black politician.  I never trusted or liked Colin Powell, however.

Excellent!   When asked

Excellent!

When asked if he went to war with Iraq  to derail the impeachment vote:  “I don’t think any serious person would believe that any President would do such a thing." - President Clinton (Dec 1998).

Powell's endorsement

I don't consider Powell a traitor or a racist. Like Christopher Buckley, I just consider him wrong. No need to assume that they're morally or mentally defective. We just disagree. We have different values, which means we think different things are important.

For example, Powell argued that inspirational rhetoric is a required presidential skill. I strongly disagree. That's falling for the rhetoric. It strikes me as contradictory to claim that Obama (who has done nothing, and risked nothing) is inspirational because he can give a speech from a teleprompter, but McCain (who actually served heroically) is a lesser choice because his speeches aren't as smooth. Rhetoric is a plus, and a luxury ... it isn't the substance. Lincoln wasn't a great president because of his rhetoric; he was a great president because of his courage under extreme duress. His rhetoric was secondary.

Want proof? Ask the same question about Washington. Washington had no rhetoric. The only remarkable quotes from Washington came after he became Washington.

Powell is a Republican, not a conservative. You can infer that from his comments about the Supreme Court. Those comments are evidence that he has an ideological litmus test for Supreme Court appointments, because he can't possibly consider Roberts and Alito to be judicially unqualified. It's the threat to Roe v. Wade that bothers him.

I still respect Powell very much, but I certainly disagree with him.

The Most Dangerous "Ism"

The most dangerous "Ism" in America today isn't an "Ism".  It is POLITCAL CORRECTNESS.  The political left, the media and the education system have successfully ingrained this non-ism into our lives.  Millions of people are scared to death of offending someone's sensibilities, PARTICULARLY ABOUT RACE.

The Obama campaign is ALL about race and political correctness.  His pre-emptive strikes seem to have scared the hell out of a lot of otherwise thoughtful people.  Don't criticize the Messiah because they'll accuse you of wearing a sheet, or turning a water cannon on him.

Hopefully, there seems to be a glimmering of a backlash.  Whether or not it's too little too late will have a huge impact on the future of all Americans.

I completely agree.

I completely agree.  People shy away from mentioning what should be nothing but conversation, due to what is pushed on our society now as "you can't say that" type stuff.  It's stupid.

Obama started the racial crap, pre-emptively, yet the McCain campaign has never said anything that Obama "warned" everyone would be said.  That's Reverend Wright BS at it's finest.

Before that article, did you like Rush Limbaugh?

Not particularly, but I

Not particularly, but I wasn't anti or anything.

I just think he's been sounding more desperate and pathetic lately and these types of comments make me wonder why anyone would listen to this guy...

So, Limbaugh implies that

So, Limbaugh implies that Powell's decision may be race based. And expresses wonder about Powell's concern for appointment of SCOTUS judges. And throws in a few digs about Reagan and Bush's "other" decisions, like those in Powell's (and his son's) favor.

Oh yeah, those observations are way off base. Completely over-the-line. How dare he question Powell's judgement, and dare to defend Reagan's and Bush's? I can see why someone like you who wasn't "anti or anything" would now think this made Limbaugh "a joke."

Yeah, I'm convinced.

Colin Powell Defending Muslims…

Making Fun of AGW http://giovanniworld.wordpress.com/

Wow, CT,

See, this is what the left doesn't understand. What they'd dismiss as "anecdotal." I don't think anyone would argue that there are no Muslim patriots in America. But that's not the point, as you say.

This is just a straw-man argument, one of many these past months. The question isn't whether or not Obama is Muslim. I never took that seriously. I'm more concerned with his socialist views. And his constant bobbing and weaving.

BUT, that being said, I do wonder about how he's dealt with questions about his possible Muslim ties. I don't care if he's Muslim, I don't think he considers himself Muslim. But the way he's dealt with the question bothers me. To claim that it's "hateful" to raise the issue shows assumptions about people's feelings that rub me the wrong way.

Look at the whole "Hussein" business. People pointed out the name, which I always thought of as a funny coincidence. Meaningless, ironic, but funny. His campaign went ballistic, don't dare hang that name on him! Why? Then, they turn around and use it themselves! Huh?

What like.....

Powells endorsement of Comrade Obama???

"If a man does his best, what else is there"?

General George S. Patton Jr.

Another "independant" unmasked.

I agree with most here that the msm will cover Powell's endorsement as if the fat lady has just sang for the McCain.  However, like most, I believe Powell's star quickly faded once he resigned from the Bush Administration and his endorsement of Obama so late in the game seems anti-climatic.  It's also strange since Powell and McCain seemed to have so much in common.  Both were military men, both were "aisle crossers," both were Republicans that the press actually liked.  You know, RHINOs!

Yet Powell has lost me on this one. Here is a man who could have been a Republican President of the U.S., refused to run, and now sits on the sidelines whining about the direction the GOP is taking (i.e. they've been eskewing blacks). J.C. Watts has also been flirting with this nonsense.  Shut up and lead, gentlemen!  It is also sad to see Powell praise Obama with the same crap we've been fed by starry-eyed liberals who feel that Obama will be "transformational" on the world stage.  Then again, maybe the word is appropiate when Powell sits back and watches a President Obama (God, forbid) reduce his beloved military as he hands a olive branch to tyrants.

Powell was a huge

Powell was a huge disappointment as Secretary of State.

Maybe that's why the Libs like him so much?

Hey Jerry, I see that line

Hey Jerry, I see that line in your post all the time (at least I guess it's always yours), about Clinton on the impeachment question.

Just so that I actually understand it, is the point of your posting it to show that Clinton never answered the question with a "no?"  It appears so, since we all know Clinton used words very carefully to cover his arse if ever asked again.

I always took it to be an

I always took it to be an answer to the people that claimed Bush "ginned up" the Iraq war to deflect attention from his "shredding the Constitution," or other such drivel.

Just because that reason seems more currently relevant, anyway.

Powell, the Puke

I haven't had any respect for the disloyal Powell for years.

It has nothing to do with the color of his skin, but the content of his character.

$150 million?

Am I the only one who wonders how Obama raised another $150 million dollars in a month?  If the economy is so bad, where in the USA is this coming from, (or is that a trick question)?  It's enough to make a cynical New Yorker wonder..

I was wondering the same

I was wondering the same thing. If Obama is so concerned about the average American having tough financial times, why doesn't he tell everyone to stop sending him money and use the money to pay their mortgage!

Ditto, Ct...

If, as the Obama campaign has told us all ad nauseum, most of their contributions come in the form of small(er) increments (and I think it was $200 and less per donation), then one of two things must be happening. Either there is an astronomically HUGE number of people sending in contributions, even when economic conditions are so tough, OR there is some serious funny business going on with where a lot of his campaign money may really be coming from. Personally, I wouldn't be at all surprised if the real explanation was the latter of those two possibilities.

Making Fun of AGW http://giovanniworld.wordpress.com/

Ct...I could have sworn I heard...

it was $200 and less, but you may be right. Either way, it tends to strain credulity that that many people, being so strapped for cash, sent in that much money in such a short amount of time. I heard this morning on Fox, that during the first quarter of this year Obama brought in $113 million, and we are expected to believe that $150 million was raised from "the folks" in just one month?

And you're also right that if there are ever allegations or evidence of fund raising improprieties on the part of the Obama campaign, there is no way that the MSM will be doing any investigating into that. They'll do what they have always done when it comes to "The One"...They'll stonewall.

"...peace is the highest aspiration of the American People. We will negotiate for it, sacrifice for it, we will never surrender for it, now or ever." President Ronald Reagan, January 20, 1981

$200 and less was the Bush campaign...

in 2000, I think. It showed his "average American" support level. And I think Obama's campaign makes that claim to give the same impression. I never did buy it, $200 or $50. Not from Obama.

And I don't buy it now.

If only Hitler had lived he would be redeemed by Barack Obama

Colin Powell is the same financier backed ilk which started World War II. I would instead choose to comment on another little soldier who was a political hack too focusing on AP propagandist Deanna Bellandi who wrote an excuse piece for Bill Ayers.

Replace Ayers name with Adolf Hitler's name and it is amazing how disgusting the Obama Ayers connection is and those people defending the creature that is Bill Ayers.

As
one can note Deanna Bellandi today wrote a propaganda piece on poor
Bill Ayers, the terrorist leftist agent in being such a nice guy.
I
thought it would be fitting to ask his wife Bernadine Dohrn who is

support and mentor Barack Obama if the following game would be
acceptable if Bill Ayers name was taken out and Adolf Hitler's name was
placed in it.

The only difference between Adolf Hitler
and Bill Ayers is Hitler pulled off his revolution involving race
warfare and Ayers only murdered a few of his comrades in Greenwhich
Nacht.

So it seems Adolf Hitler can be reformed using the same criteria which Bill Ayers has manipulated.

All
Hitler needed to do was throw a party for Obama, help a Democratic
Mayor issue in a new program to destroy teachers unions and say he was
voting for Obama and all those terrorist problems of the past would
just be nothing, because when you vote for Barack Obama even Adolf
Hitler would be a good guy according to liberals.

And this guy was in the Reagan administration?

I don't think it is going to change a single vote.

African Americans are already committed to Obama so one additional endorsement won't add anything to the totals.

It does however finally give the Dems an answer to the defection of Joe Lieberman.

I am disappointed in Powell , but given his falling out with the Bush administration this isn't all that surprising.

The ironic thing is that Powell himself may have been on McCain's short list of Veep candidates.

I do sense a note of jealousy in his negative comments about Sarah Palin.

I would also remind all reading that Powell assumes the inevitability of an Obama victory and much like Brooks is a Republican who decided to hedge his bets so that he can still weigh in as an elder statesman.

My final verdict? It doesn't change much but it doesn't help either.

Obama Fundraising and the Economy

Obama raised $150M in September. What bad economy? This is coupled with reports that people's credit cards have been fraudently charged up to $2,300 Obama contributions across the country.

What's going on here? Why the fraud? Why do hard-strapped Americans give away their money and then ask for a handout from the Government? Why does Obama need all this cash? Why did he opt out of public financing after promising not to -- and where is the msm on this double-talk and broken promise.

Somethin fishy is going on here. Just another Democratic take-over in the works, I think.

Thanks Alma

Alma Powell wouldn't let her Colin run for President.  She said she was too concerned for his safety (after all those years in the military).

Poor Colin is forced to live out his fantasy of running for POTUS through Obama.

Thanks Alma.

Powell

Truth is, Gen Powell was not in any real danger in the Army. He was mostly a Staff weenie and a politician who rose through the ranks via the route so many senior people do. Go to the right parties, hump the right legs and smooze the right people. No one ever heard of this guy until he got the CJCS job.

Gee, what a surprise...

I am not a bit surprised that Powell is endorsing Obama. For the record, I have never been much impressed by Colin Powell. I never thought he was much of a general...rather, throughout his military and government career, he was more of a politician than a general, which is why I was never a fan.

As far as Powell being a Republican, he has always been a very lukewarm Republican, at best. I think for Powell, this decision may have come down to a couple of basic things. First and probably most importantly, I think the chance that America's first black president may be about to be elected is just too powerful and tempting a possibility for Powell to ignore. Also, he may be angling for a place in Obama's government...Maybe Secretary of Defense or of State (again), may be in the back of his mind. Who knows? These are just my sneaking suspicions.

Whatever the reasons, I don't think the loss of Powell's endorsement of McCain is any great detriment, as I never expected McCain to get it in the first place.

"...peace is the highest aspiration of the American People. e will negotiate for it, sacrifice for it, we will never surrender for it, now or ever." President Ronald Reagan, January 20, 1981

Huhh?

PSky,

What if...? Powell endosed McCain...what would you have said?

I think it would have gone like this...

I am not a bit surprised that Powell is endorsing McCain. For the
record, I have been very impressed by Colin Powell. I never thought he was very much of a politician...rather, throughout his military and
government career, he was more of a general than a politician, which is

Yeah, that's what I would have probably seen...if Powell were to have endorsed McCain. Too bad for McCain...now what?

What's this story about Fannie and Freddie secretly funneling money to Republicans to derail efforts for regulation? Gosh, Republicans derailing regulation efforts 3 years before the Gov't takeover? OUCH...

Ubercon

NOPE...WRONG, Ubercon...

I love how you seem to know how and what I think...especially considering that you don't know me.

Let me set you straight...

I was being honest when I said that I have NEVER been a fan of Colin Powell. This is a longstanding position of mine going back years, and those who actually know me, are aware of that. You can agree or not with my assessment of Powell as a general or as a cabinet member, but I have never been particularly impressed with him.

As far as Powell's endorsement of Obama is concerned, I have believed ever since Obama locked down the nomination, coupled with the fact that I believe that Powell has for some time seriously "gone off the reservation" as far as supporting Republican positions, that he would be supporting Obama privately, if not publicly. Today we found out that he is, in fact, supporting him publicly.

So think what you like, Ubercon, but I do think it is interesting that if Powell is so sure that Obama rather that McCain should be president, why isn't he going to campaign for him? He obviously feels strongly enough to come out publicly for him on a national television show. Why not campaign for him?

"...peace is the highest aspiration of the American People. We will negotiate for it, sacrifice for it, we will never surrender for it, now or ever." President Ronald Reagan, January 20, 1981

Hey, Youconnman,

Did you read your link beyond the headline?

"All GOP members of the committee supported it; all Democrats opposed it."

Yeah, DCI "pressured" 17 Republicans to stop reform of Fannie and Freddie. They didn't have to "pressure" any Democrats, because they were all against it! Just like we've been saying all along. Thanks for proving our point!

LMAO!

Fox News in the Bag for Obama

What the Heck! Those talking heads on Fox News Sunday are acting like Obama has this election wrapped up.  Disgusting!  Chris Wallace is a jacka$$.

On Powell

Is Colin Powell even RELEVANT anymore?  What has he done - write a book?  Wow!  He is positioning himself for a cabinet position.  You know the brothas were gonna stick together, Yo!

When Wallace asked McCain about Powell's Obama endorsement, John shrugged and said he has endorsements from 4 former secretaries of state.  Way to go John.  Colin Powell was somewhat of a limp-noodle, sour apple in Bush's administration anyways.

This election is not over yet!

Yep, Travis...

I does seem apparent that the decision has been made by the "powers-that-be" at Fox that Obama has this all locked up, doesn't it??? This garbage started last week with the after-the-debate chat, continued with O'Reilly on Thursday, and is rolling right along today. If I wanted to see and hear this kind of tripe, I'd watch MSNBC or CNN.

I am stunned and very disappointed that Fox has been doing this. I thought that if there was any news organization that wouldn't do this, it would be Fox.

And to your question "Is Colin Powell even RELEVANT anymore?"...My answer is NO.

Note to Fox...The calendar reads October 19th, not November 4th. This election isn't over yet...

Gentleman A is 95% right on Issue X.

Gentleman B is 5% right on Issue X.

Fox brings them together and gives them equal weighing and time in the name of balance.

  There lies the problem.

Your points are precisely what I posted about earlier in this thread. Obama brought in $113 million during the first quarter of this year, and we're suppose to believe, with the economy and the markets in the toilet, that such a huge number of people are contributing $150 million in 30 days??? After what Soros allegedly pulled in Britain and France, I think the ol' bastard is capable of just about anything, assuming he did what he has been credited with doing by many.

RD...I too don't want...

to sound like a conspiracy nut, but I think we're justified in our suspicions of Soros. Like you said, given his track record and resources, nothing that he has done, is doing, or may do, surprises me.

In fact, it scares the hell out of me.

WOW.... you're totally on to something here. I mean, surprised we haven't thought of this until now.

This is private funding/financing... and either the MSM is bs'ing us about the economy (which we know they are on some level), or my BIGGER fear/theory.... a *major* chunk has to be coming from somewhere.

It could be any number people that have some underground access to money from scary, nefarious places (that get donations from who-knows-where...)

Yep...It is clear to me, MrShy, that the Dems...

have decided that from now on, if they can't win a presidential election fair and square, they'll either just buy it, commit massive voter fraud to get it, or both!

Senior Shy - Americans are sending their Mortgage $s to BHO ?

Instead on paying our mortgages ?
This is too consistent
Too steady
Too MUCH money rolling in
And it is totally unbelievable that cash strapped Americans are that much IN LOVE with Campaign Contributions.

$150 million?

McCain alluded to something about this on Fox this morning.  It was fairly quick but he said something like "where is this money coming from.. makes you wonder", and then he went on to say that he wasn't insinuating anything.  This just may have legs..

Noticed on another blog also curious about the $150 mil., there's speculation that if Soros is the reason for the influx of $ to bho, one reason could be oil speculation.  If bho is POTUS, no drilling here.. soros has bgillions in oil overseas.. ipso switcho.. keeps the energy $ out of this country.. helps Soros buy another politician.  Just a thought, albeit a depressing one..

Could be, TA...

I think Soros has his grubby hands in so many pies, it wouldn't surprise me at all. There is so much going on behind the scenes in lefty lib Obamaland with their tangled money and finance webs, Lord only knows what the truth is.
