Fox's animated comedy "Family Guy" on Sunday showed one of its main characters, Stewie Griffin, dressed up in a Nazi uniform with a McCain-Palin button on it.
I kid you not.
The premise of the episode setting up this disgraceful political statement weeks before an important election was described by IGN TV (video of segment embedded right, h/t NB reader David M):
With no new MLB playoff game scheduled for Sunday, Family Guy fans will be pleased to know that Stewie and the rest of the Griffin family are back this Sunday with an all-new episode featuring a time-traveling Brian and Stewie.
The guys travel to Poland on the day of the Nazi invasion to rescue Mort who accidentally steps into a time machine. One can only imagine what Hitler will be up to as the trio try to get back to Quahog.
As you can see by the embedded video, after the trio takes uniforms away from three Nazis, Stewie notices the following under his lapel:

Isn't that special?

The stupidity these days all
October 19, 2008 - 22:59 ET by GregEThe stupidity these days all around us regarding elections is unreal. Elections have become like some kind of sport. You root for a "team," they win or lose, and it's off to the next "game." And Hollywood and the MSM can't get enough of doing things one-sided as they possibly can. Things like Stewie with a pin might seem petty, but the constant barrage of little things here and there, always slanted one way (liberal of course), it adds up. There's no call for it. Presidential election in the United States is not a game.
Focusing in on that pin is just blatantly stupid. And I'd say the same if it was an Obama pin and Hollywood was against Obama. For me it's not subjective, it's principle.
How about they have Cleveland (the black guy on the show) in a card game, as Barack Obama, and focus in on his hand of 5 "race cards?" That one would be absolutely true.

The Real Nazis
October 19, 2008 - 22:46 ET by JillCWStewie Griffin needs to learn how the Nazis operated. Then he might take a more realistic stab at who they are today. Back then, if things went right for the Nazis, they took the credit. When their plans went wrong, they blamed the opposition. The Nazis were SOCIALISTS, not conservatives, but our government schools have done such a good job educating Stewie, that he hasn't a clue. Get over it Stewie, I'm still voting as planned.
P.S. Obama is the SOCIALIST, not John McCain and Sarah Palin.
Speaking of Hitler
October 20, 2008 - 07:07 ET by ahusserIt is ironic that very recently I have been thinking of how the German people handed over power to Hitler. The reds in other countries seized power but the Germans gave it away. I used to think (not real seriously) that Obama was the anti-Christ I am starting to think (seriously) he is a sort of Manchurian Candidate (some disturbing foreign influences come to mind{Chavez, Soros, Iran anyone?}) a wolf in sheep's clothing. A man of dubious and conflicted background, belonging to a church for 20+ years that preaches hatred toward America and whites. Some kind of association with former unrepentant domestic extreme left wing terrorists (of course uninvestigated). A wife who was never proud of America until her unqualified husband ran for the Presidency. A man who apparently profited with being friends of a convicted fraudster of Syrian descent. A man who's campaign chest is in the hundreds of millions of dollars (where is this money coming from?). A man who can't put his hand over his heart during the National Anthem. An avowed Socialist who is pandering to the middle class (a la Bill Clinton). There are many unanswered uninvestigated questions about this man's character, background and finances that would doom any other's running for office and yet the American people are about to elect him President. God help us, I can't shake the feeling that by being a conservative I am soon to become an enemy of the state. I really think we are in real trouble this time.

October 20, 2008 - 07:52 ET by R D HelmLOL-The conspiracy-kook kops might just come take me away at any minute, but I, too, am beginning to see Obama as a puppet for other people, mainly Ayers and Soros.
It is becoming clearer each day that Obama and Ayers not only had a very close relationship, but were practically joined at the hip.
Then factor in the apparently limitless amounts of campaign cash that seem to be flowing into Obama's coffers, which have only one possible source, if you really think about it.
I'd say many Americans are being duped into voting for a manufactured fraud, as there is apparently nothing real about Barack Hussein Obama.

There is (almost) no connection
October 20, 2008 - 12:17 ET by w0tmThere is no connection between Fox Entertainment and Fox News other than common ownership (Murdoch). He is apolitical and has said so. He financed Hillary to the tune of millions of dollars but then contributed millions to Obama after he won the nomination. He's also contributed millions to Republicans over the years.
He wants his "assets" (networks) to be whatever they need to be to maximize profit. For Fox News that means (mostly) Conservative politics. For Fox Entertainment it means entertainment aimed at the lowest common denominator of viewers. Mostly crude, vulgar and brainless shows where the Hollywood writers are encouraged to dump on anyone and any subject they wish. In this case, anything that doesn't agree with DailyKOS.
To be a far-left news network would put Fox News in last place behind even MSNBC. For Fox Entertainment to be like any of the three major networks in 1955 would also put them dead last in the ratings. He panders to the what groups of viewers want to see and hear. And he makes billions doing it!
This is no great mystery.
An Artistic Critique....
October 20, 2008 - 13:21 ET by MexNobama... of the moment in question.
Despite my pro South Park anti Family Guy stand I forced myself to watch the episode....
Timing is one of the most important aspects of comedy, and Family Guy has a long history of breaking timing rules by allowing jokes to go on beyond the unfunny to the minimalistically mind numbing.
The running gag of the fight between Peter and the Rooster is one of the few effective examples. Another example of this working is the "Pow right in the kisser" loop used in an earlier episode.
In the case of the McCain Palin button on the Nazi uniform the length of time spent on the "close up" went far beyond the limits of comic timing, but was not long enough to reach the state of minimalism.
It served as a bleak and unfair partisan attack and accusation: "McCain and Palin are Nazis pure and simple".
There was no real comic effect created by the event. If you are a liberal you loved it, if you are a conservative you hated it, if you are an independent you shrugged your shoulders and if you are a film maker you winced at the ham fisted botched moment.
So I repeat:
It is a well established fact that Family Guy sucks Cartman's monkey's donkey balls.

October 19, 2008 - 23:08 ET by JBlairWhen I saw that part I nearly threw my remote at the TV. I can deal with the occasional jab at Bush, but this went too far. The sad part about it is that the episode was one of the better ones in a long time. (there was even a part where they made light of the fact that, had we known Nazis were working on an Atomic bomb, we would have gone in sooner to prevent them from getting it, which is analagous to the Iraq situation. It was, albeit, punctuated by a war for oil joke, but it actually made a good point)

October 20, 2008 - 03:11 ET by MindwerkzYa know I love family guy, catch the simpsons every once in a while, not a big fan of south park. Though honestly you cant tell me that there have been many over the top moments this season. This palin button was really pretty bad and Im a big fan of the show. The sad thing is in most seasons stewie is the closeted gay republican and brian plays the altruistic "holier than thou" liberal and they play off each other well. This season though you had the holloween episode where they paused the whole show to announce that laura bush "killed a guy", they had the pro life lady show up to a party, who oddly stated her case perfectly well and then they ridiculed her as a rape victim saying she had never had consensual sex and so on. Those are just a few examples off the top of my head. The sad thing is what I loved about the show is that all the characters were over the top representations of themselves but lately its just a right wing bash fest. Granted the token rightie, stewie, has always been a barely closeted homosexual who wants to take over the world and is self described as evil...

Great Balance
October 20, 2008 - 18:32 ET by spiffYes, I find that true. On one site it is implied that Libertarianism, homosexuality and Heinlein are fuel source for Reductio ad Hitlerum. Libertarians, homosexuals and Robert A. Heinlein are about as far apart philosophically as is possible. Did this guy even look up Libertarianism? The odds statistically of all these subjects containing information to reduce them to Reductio ad Hitlerum is probably astronomical. Truly a flaw in logic.

What I find humorous is that idiots like Seth MacFarlane who toss around the 'Nazi' reference don't have a clue what it means. They, meaning leftists like him, call Bush a Nazi for instance as though they could get away with that if we lived under a Nazi regime?? Contrast that with the simple fact that many liberal policies are more closeley akin to those enacted by the Nazis in the 30's and 40's.
Again, what we have here is just another example of ignorance on the part of the left.

I was amazed to see that the Subway restaurant chain was using "Family Guy" in its promotions.
Who would have thought that these sexual perversions and deviations would become so mainstream that a leader in the fast-food industry would use Family Guy as a promotion.

October 20, 2008 - 10:52 ET by Chris NormanThe producers of Family Guy are very talented, the show's satire on pop culture has made me laugh my head off on occasion (the visit to the Indian Casino, where the Indian workers were all named after their jobs: "Takes Your Money", etc.). With such talent, it's a shame they seem to be hell bent on going over the line into being crass merely for crassness' sake and "jokes" that seem designed more to offend than to produce laughs. In this sense, they're like little kids trying to gross out the adults. They also seem to be real hung up on the issues of homosexuality and Christianity. October 20, 2008 - 11:49 ET by fitzfongYou know why the Indian Casino episode stands out as funny? Because it was an episode written before the show was cancelled. There has been one funny episode of Family Guy since its return from cancellation...and that was in its first season back on the air. MacFarlane simply phones it in now...he retreats to the same stale jokes (dirty old man with walker, Stewie's sexuality, monkey in the closet...and now resurrecting Johnny Brennan's Jerky Boys act as Mort Goldman). This is at least the third time they've done that Hope/Crosby bit with Brian and Stewie. The same gags certainly don't get funnier each time.

The voice, the pretentious big band/martini routine, the constant callbacks to his Prius and the Noam Chomsky books are simply expressions of MacFarlane's inner snob. How attention-starved must MacFarlane be to effectively write himself into the script?

allow me to love

If and when BHO is in the White House, how long before the
BHO secret Police take us to the camps for a shower.
How long before your bank account is fleeced and shared with those who have none. How long before your home is taken on that
tree lined street and given to illegals, because YOU where too greedy, working two jobs and keeping the guy on the couch down.
Minister Farrakhan needs your portfolio to help his down trodden.
Should be very interesting when your auto is taken and you are told to ride public transportation, for the betterment of the world.
Bill Ayers will be Sec of Education and those subjects in your kids school, will not reflect anything you know the kids need to make their way as adults.
Easy there. An Obama
October 20, 2008 - 11:20 ET by Chris NormanEasy there. An Obama Administration won't do things so blatantly. If they did, it would all backfire on them. They will be much more subtle with the radical changes. Obscure rules changed that will have a profound effect on policies, very liberal judges installed, much lower profile leftists than Ayers installed in cabinet departments who will be as radical without the open controversy. Things will be more subtle yet more insidious than what you describe, because many of the changes won't be noticed until it's too late to fight them. Many of the changes will be deep rooted and long lasting - if not permanent.

Chris... That's exactly
October 20, 2008 - 11:28 ET by Clear thinkerChris...
That's exactly how things will come to pass. Obama is smart enough to do things in a quiet, unsuspecting way so the people don't know what's happening. It's up to all of us to make sure he doesn't get away with it. Now more than ever (if Obama wins) we will have to pay close attention to every tiny detail that comes from his administration, and his Congress. We must not allow this country to become a Socialist/Communist puppet. Regardless of what liberals say, it is NOT the American way!

CT, Well, we know one
October 20, 2008 - 11:39 ET by Chris NormanCT,
Well, we know one thing: the mainstream media won't be who we look to for true information about who Obama is appointing and what he is trying to do behind the scenes. They will cheer him on and smooth out any rough edges that may show. This will be the first time when the media is, for all practical purposes, firmly part of the government - it's supposed to skeptically cover. Scary.

I think the worst thing
October 20, 2008 - 11:56 ET by ElyasI think the worst thing about this, is that it really wasn't that clever. I like Family Guy, and they use to try and be more subtle in the jokes.
With the recent episodes mocking Jesus, and the "War for Oil" and the "McCain button" jokes its like they forgot how to be funny. The show just seems like they are trying to hard to be that "edgy" liberal humor now.
