Before the New York Times published Saturday's 2500-word, front-page hit piece about Cindy McCain, an attorney representing the wife of the Arizona senator sent a letter to executive editor Bill Keller appealing to his "sense of fairness, balance and decency" to not run "another story about her."
In the correspondence, which has been posted in full by Time magazine's Mark Halperin (h/t NBer Bob Mc), attorney John Dowd chastised Keller for: not employing his "investigative assets looking into Michelle Obama;" not trying to "find Barack Obama's drug dealer that he wrote about in his book, Dreams of My Father," and; not interviewing Obama's "poor relatives in Kenya and determin[ing] why Barack Obama has not rescued them. Thus, there is a terrific lack of balance here."
FoxNews.com is reporting further anger over this Times article being expressed by the McCain campaign (emphasis added, picture courtesy AP):
"The New York Times has stooped lower than this campaign ever imagined possible in an attempt to discredit a woman whose only apparent sin is being married to the man that would oppose that paper's preferred candidate, Barack Obama, in his quest for the presidency," McCain campaign spokesman Michael Goldfarb wrote in the statement released Saturday.
"It is a black mark on the record of a paper that was once widely respected, but is now little more than a propaganda organ for the Democratic party," he added. "The New York Times has accused John McCain of running a dishonorable campaign, but today it is plain to see where the real dishonor lies."
I couldn't have said it any better.

I love Cindy McCain and I
October 18, 2008 - 20:02 ET by mostlymoderateI love Cindy McCain and I couldn't agree more with her attorney. NY Times is filth. Never in my life did I think I would see the day that people would be persecuted simply because they are well-off, conservative or Republican.
NYT needs a reality check, please
October 19, 2008 - 06:39 ET by wdhorningI am going to be a little sympathetic here. The NYT has lost its way.
The NYT has a lot of power to sway voters. It rather obvious which way they want to sway voters.
Why is the NYT acting like this though? I am not talking about taking a political position, but rather that for a paper that claims to be a defender of "human rights" it does an awful lot to destroy those "human rights" with tabloid style journalism, as in the case of Cindy McCain and the rest of the Palin family.
Senator McCain's and Senator Obama's background are fair game, but even Senator Obama said that families were off limits to the press, not to limit the rights of a free press, but because that is just the way it should be.
So far the MSM has done a lot to dig up family issues on McCain, Palin and even Joe the plummer, yet it has left untouched the family issues of Obama's family, of which there are many. Why the double standard? Is that the "honor code" by which the MSM lives?
The MSM has even failed to dig up certain truths about Obama, that might include his secret plans from out of his past that could be damaging to over 300,000,000 people's lives, and even hundreds of millions around the world. I mean has the MSM really thought this through to give him a "pass" on his background instead, even to the point of rationalizing it away, since there could be some very serious negative consequences to all these people due to an Obama presidency? Does the MSM want this on their conscience?
(And there have been some very negative consequences in the past by many a politician supported by the MSM, from all political parties, such as crime, scandal, bribery, misconduct, damaging policy, etc., which proves that the MSM was not doing its job.)
Now both candidate's personal backgrounds are "fair game" for the press, since this is very much like anyone applying for a job, so a country needs to know if the candidae is qualified, not just from experience and education, but also with respect to character, trust, honor, accountability, judgment and number of other important human traits that should apply, especially to politicians. So their backgrounds are "fair game."
The press has been given a sacred right, not to be trampled on. Has the MSM trampled on others' rights in the process of reporting on the candidates, since the Bill of Rights has more than just the "free press" rights in it? I mean look at the hounding of Princess Diana, for example?
In summary, the NYT needs a reality check, not for the sake of its political views, but for the sake the welfare of everyone. I am sure they believe that means Obama is the right choice. However, Obama's background may very well indicate he is not the right one, but the NYT could very well be contributing to a great "destruction" to virtually eveyone's life in this country, and even some places in the world, if Obama's polices are implemented.
And the lack of scutiny by the MSM into Obama's real past may be a root cause in the harm Obama could do. In otherwords, the MSM could even be that much more in the wrong.

Why isn't obama not spreading his wealth around to his family? Michelle just recently spent over $400 on a snack at a New York Hilton consisting of lobster, caviar and champagne. That would have been quite a bonanza for obama's Kenyan half-brother who lives on a dollar a day. But then, I guess if obama is elected his half-brother will be getting some of Joe's money.

Obama's Economic plan: more taxes, more spending, more regulation. Prosperity here we come.
Twinmaster...your post is right out of....
October 18, 2008 - 21:30 ET by Tailgunner...the liberal playbook. When liberals are caught red handed lying, perjuring, obstructing, smearing, taking bribes, harassing women, giving away state secrets, or hanging out with domestic terrorists, black racist preachers and/or Communists their first response is to spin, deny and attack.
If that fails, usually due to overwhelming proof, liberals' fallback position is 'moral equivalency' (examples: 'everyone does it', 'both sides are guilty', or 'Stop the finger pointing, folks')
I don't accept moral equivalency. Whatever some Republicans did or did not do, Democrats ran Congress for nearly two years. There were NO Democratic efforts to reform the shaky housing market. In fact they repeatedly fought GOP efforts to minimize taxpayer exposure to the imminent mortgage train wreck.

October 18, 2008 - 21:45 ET by Bob McThe NYT hitpiece has the McCain people justifiably upset, and John M. Dowd Esq need not have been a psychic to foretell of it in his letter.
Mr Dowd himself has reason to be upset with Time.com for this hit-blurb:
http://thepage.time.com/2008/10/18/mccain-lawyer-invokes-obama-drug-use/
which completely misrepresents the purpose of the letter by omitting the paragraph that follows the one they quoted.
From Time.com:
"Cindy McCain's lawyer complains the NY Times hasn't spent enough time investigating the Land of Lincolner's youthful drug use, his poor relatives in Kenya and Michelle Obama while responding to a Saturday story".
“You have not tried to find Barack Obama's drug dealer that he wrote about in his book, Dreams of My Father. Nor have you interviewed his poor relatives in Kenya and determined why Barack Obama has not rescued them. Thus, there is a terrific lack of balance here.”
The very next paragraph of Mr. Dowd's letter which was left out:
"I suggest to you that none of these subjects on either side are worthy of the energy and resources of The New York Times. They are cruel hit pieces designed to injure people that only the worst rag would investigate and publish. I know you and your colleagues are always preaching about raising the level of civil discourse in our political campaigns. I think taking some your own medicine is in order here".
Kinda refutes the whole Time.com hit-blurb, doesn't it? A lie of omission.

Hillary's out of bounds in '92; Cindy's not in '08.
October 18, 2008 - 22:34 ET by nkviking75Remember 1992? On one hand the Clintons were making clear that Hillary would be very active in Bill's administration. But if anyone dared speak ill of Hillary, the Clinton campaign would have kittens, cows, sheep, whales, and whatever else because the wife of the candidate was supposedly out of bounds.
Fast forward to 2008. Cindy McCain has showed no signs of wanting to be a First Lady in the Hillary mode, but the MSM takes a proverbial chain saw to her. But then, the MSM has been attacking a four-month-old baby with Down's syndrome for the crime of being Sarah Palin's son, so what would we expect?
Hopefully in decades ahead our society will regain some semblance of sanity and they'll wonder how this country ever survived.

2) Attacking a private citizen, Joe "The Plumber" for merely asking a question!
3) Using the race card every oportunity they can!
4) And now they're attacking Cindy McCain!
