McCain Senior Adviser Accuses NYT of Being Obama's Advocate

In some of the strongest criticism of the media yet during this campaign, John McCain's senior adviser Steve Schmidt on Monday blasted the New York Times for being an advocate for Democrat presidential candidate Barack Obama.

In a scathing attack, Schmidt said the Times had "cast aside its journalistic integrity and tradition to advocate for the defeat of one candidate, in this case John McCain, and advocate for the election of the other candidate, Barack Obama."

During a press conference call, after CNN's Dana Bash asked campaign manager Rick Davis about a Times article accusing him of getting paid for doing advocacy work that benefitted Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, Schmidt jumped in to absolutely lambaste the Gray Lady for its clearly biased reporting during this election cycle (audio available here, picture courtesy New York Times/AP):

Let's be clear and be honest with one another about something fundamental to this race which is this, is that whatever the New York Times once was, it is today a, not by any standard a journalistic organization. It is a pro-Obama advocacy organization that every day attacks the McCain campaign, attacks Sen. McCain, attacks Gov. Palin, and excuses Sen. Obama. There's no level of public vetting with regard to Sen. Obama's record, his background, his past statements. There's no level of outrage directed at his deceitful ads. This is an organization that is completely, totally 150 percent in the tank for the Democratic candidate which is their prerogative to be, but let's not be dishonest, and, and call it something other than it is. Everything that is read in the New York Times that attacks this campaign should be evaluated by the American people from that perspective that it is an organization that has made a decision to cast aside its journalistic integrity and tradition to advocate for the defeat of one candidate, in this case John McCain, and advocate for the election of the other candidate, Barack Obama.

Hours later, the Times executive editor Bill Keller hysterically responded (via Politico):

"The New York Times is committed to covering the candidates fully, fairly and aggressively. It's our job to ask hard questions, fact-check their statements and their advertising, examine their programs, positions, biographies and advisors. Candidates and their campaign operatives are not always comfortable with that level of scrutiny, but it's what our readers expect and deserve."

The only thing missing in this punch line was a thunderous rimshot so that those not getting the joke would know when to laugh.

Controlled Anger

What is amazing to me is that Steve Schmidt was able to bite his tongue enough and limit his criticism to the NYT only.

Grey Lady is all grey

The New York Times or better stated the Communist Manifesto will be relegated to the ashbin of history very soon. Keller is a joke and so are all the Manhattan Libs that read this yellow journalism. They don't print news they print agenda driven democrap propoganda and Americans are tired of them. That is why their circulation is in the tank, just like they are in the tank for B. Hussein Obama...

in his reply,he never

in his reply,he never claims it is not true......is it true,or does that not matter any more...i would like to know..is the times actually biased,or just that he did not like the story coming out?

Truth?

Whether a particular story or column is true or not no longer matters. CNN, Dan Rather,et.al proved, over and over, that the media in America has lost all credibilty. Because they have lied so much, at least half, if not most, Americans view the press with cynicism. The left-wing media has stepped over the line much too often to be believed any longer. It's the "boy who cried wolf" story which has destroyed what was once "freedom" of the press. Now we are suffering for it.

NEVER,NEVER trust a "liberal"

why dosn't the truth

why dosn't the truth matter...if the truth does not matter anymore, that we are lost..and yes, even if the papre does slant, that does not excuse him from whether or not it is true..the democrat party has been rightfully slammed over fannie mae and freddie mac,but if if some of john mccain s people were also involved, well, people in glass houses....

Democrat Party Slammed

WTF? When was the Democrat party slammed for Frannie and Freddie? Why do you keep trying to feed us porky pies?

The truth always matters. I really wish that whenever you had pundits and candidates on TV, that they would all be hooked up to lie detectors.  I really doubt that the Dems would stand for that. I guess that's what Dems have in common with *Palestinians. You can tell they're lying because their lips are moving.

*Not ALL Palestinians of course ( My brother is dating a Palestinian ), but I'd say that the ratio of lying Democrats vs Honest ( my best friend is a Democrat ) ones is about the same as for Palestinians.

ab

first of all for the

first of all for the umteenth time,i am not a democrat ..i am a goldwater conservative so therefore i could not belong to either party because it would not be  be compatible with my beliefs.....second ..what ,pray tell,is a porkey pie..third i am not a liar ,just someone who likes a good debate

That ship has sailed

To what audience is Keller speaking? The only people who still think that the Times or the major networks or CNN or MSNBC are "neutral" are the people at those individual outlets -- even as they concede that the other outlets in that same group are biased.

Nobody buys the charade of "objectivity" anymore.

As I listened to this yesterday I entirely shared your enthusiastic embrace. Schmidt laid out a dead solid picture nailing the NY Times for giving Obama/Biden a pass, while attacking ["vetting"] the McCain/Palin team almost non-stop. But, he did not challenge them to show the public where the NY Times could make the case that they have vetted both sides of the isle, and that they have treated both sides fairly

A very public challenge to Bill Keller is in order - in this moment:

"Cute, but shallow rebuttal there, Bill Keller. You wish to argue about this? Fine, then show us the money.

We can lay out months of fawning coverage of Obama and Biden. Yes, on occasion, you can show that the NY Times has raised issues concerning them; however, we find these limited efforts to be more in the light of nudging and friendly advice. Advice, one would expect to see from concerned campaign staff. In other words, 'oops, you did this - should try it this way.' We can lay out the case where day in and day out, the NY Times staff writers go after McCain and Palin - no holds barred - full frontal attack. Each and every day your staff is creative. All potential targets are investigated and laid out for your readers to witness. Your staff digs deeply, and their bias is fully exposed. The attacks are on personal issues, on policy issues, on the campaign process, and on others in the media who wish not to do it your way.

There is almost none of this to little of this effort assigned to the Obama/Biden ticket.

Bill Keller - show us where the NY Times has fully vetted Sen's. Obama and Biden. Show us where, as you have gone after McCain and Palin, where your staff has dug into questions surrounding Obama and Biden. There are many very challenging stories out there concerning these two, which the voting public would love to see vetted. Most of the voting public is not even curious about them, yet. Why? Because they haven't even heard of the stories yet. We can identify these stories for you. The American people have a vested interest in being informed. We look forward to the exercise."

The real joke was the Obama campaign's response of 40 stories

They gave a list of what they called "40 probing stories". I'm sure they thought no one would do an analysis.  Laer at Cheat seeking missiles did and found 36 of the stories were puff pieces and only 4 had a slightly critical tone.   You could tell from the headlines that they weren't the type of hard hitting critical pieces they do on McCain and Palin but this guy took the time to link to all of them so that there is no doubt.

Campaign tactic

This is yet another attempt by McCain's campaign to distance themselves from the "elite" -- New York Times is the new arugula.
