NYT Publishes 3,000-word Palin Hit Piece On Sunday's Front Page

You want to know how scared the liberal media are of John McCain's explosion in the polls since naming Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate?

On Sunday, the New York Times will publish a 3100-word, front page hit piece about the Republican vice presidential nominee.

Entitled "Once Elected, Palin Hired Friends and Lashed Foes," the article, now available at the paper's website, attacked Palin early and often (emphasis added, h/t Jennifer Rubin):

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Gov. Sarah Palin lives by the maxim that all politics is local, not to mention personal.

So when there was a vacancy at the top of the State Division of Agriculture, she appointed a high school classmate, Franci Havemeister, to the $95,000-a-year directorship. A former real estate agent, Ms. Havemeister cited her childhood love of cows as a qualification for running the roughly $2 million agency.

Ms. Havemeister was one of at least five schoolmates Ms. Palin hired, often at salaries far exceeding their private sector wages. [...]

But an examination of her swift rise and record as mayor of Wasilla and then governor finds that her visceral style and penchant for attacking critics — she sometimes calls local opponents “haters” — contrasts with her carefully crafted public image.

Throughout her political career, she has pursued vendettas, fired officials who crossed her and sometimes blurred the line between government and personal grievance, according to a review of public records and interviews with 60 Republican and Democratic legislators and local officials. [...]

In Wasilla, a builder said he complained to Mayor Palin when the city attorney put a stop-work order on his housing project. She responded, he said, by engineering the attorney’s firing.

Interviews show that Ms. Palin runs an administration that puts a premium on loyalty and secrecy. The governor and her top officials sometimes use personal e-mail accounts for state business; dozens of e-mail messages obtained by The New York Times show that her staff members studied whether that could allow them to circumvent subpoenas seeking public records.

And that was just the beginning, as the hits kept coming according to Jennifer Rubin of Commentary Magazine:

The New York Times does the all-so predictable Sarah Palin bill of indictment for its Sunday front page...But what is so remarkable is how little there is in the page after page of minutiae thrown against the wall by the Times.

Readers are encouraged to review her entire analysis while they consider what former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich told NewsBusters during the Republican National Convention in St. Paul:

I think no one on the right should underestimate the level of threat [Palin] poses to the elite media, and therefore, the level of frenzy you're going to get.

I'd say this front page hit piece qualifies as a frenzy.

How 'bout you?

Oh I thought Vince Foster wasn't a friend of the Clintons.  Neither was Web Hubble. When trouble came, they were discarded.

Gee, I'd have to read the NY Times

to see all the bad things that they have "uncovered."  Why would I do that?  I wouldn't read the NY Times unless someone was holding a gun to my head...and even then I wouldn't.

In fact, I gave up the Dallas newspaper subscription about 4 years ago and haven't missed the slanted stories and editorials one bit.  I prefer the internet and voices I trust.

Sorry, Jeff

to see all the bad things that they have "uncovered."

Someone has to read the NYT to justify the 30+ lawyers and investigators that were sent to Alaska in August to dig this stuff up. That someone may as well be you -- 'cause it ain't gonna be me!

Keep it coming

Keep it coming Libs!

These hit pieces will have the exact opposite affect desired by these one-sided MSM types!

The NYT's continues their downward spiral, and tanking subscriptions. If they only put forth half of this zeal in investigating BHO's ties to William Ayres, ACORN, Rev. Jeremiah Wright and Resco (sp).

Pathetic!

same story, new target

-secretive administration

-demands of loyalty from all staff

-firing personal opponents

I could have written this myself in about ten minutes. It's exactly what we've heard about Bush for the past eight years.

The hate is becoming palpable.

Pay attention, folks

The people she fired aren't on her side. Gasp, what a surprise. They think they were fired as part of a personal vendetta. It couldn't have anything to do with their own incompetence, or their participation in the status quo. Of course not. When Palin came in and cleaned house, they came to hate her.

So pay attention, folks. Bitterness and petty calls for revenge like this are good sounds. It's the sound of real reform. Reform is destructive. Reform smashes. Reform hurts.

Oh, by the way, it don't come free, either. Let's be clear, my friends. I want the reform more than anyone. But it's gonna come at a cost. I'm more than happy to pay the cost, but the steeper the reform, the steeper the cost. And the media and the Democrats are going to whine and complain, every day for the next four years. Oh the humanity. Cleaning out the sheds and garages of government is going to be very painful. Starting from scratch means replacing them with people who need time to adjust. It's going to hurt sometimes. Some of the replacements are going to suck. Some of them may even be corrupt, even if they were hired with the best intentions.

But it will be worth it.

January 22, 2009 (let's give 'em a day or two). This is the same kind of bitching you're going to hear from the people who are worried about being thrown out on their ear. OK, maybe reform won't happen overnight ... and given Washington, it may not happen at all ... but it scares the hell out of them, doesn't it?

in 50 years the NYT has not

in 50 years the NYT has not written that many negative words about Castro

OMG!! THIS IS GOING TO BACKFIRE---BIG!!

I can't wait for Rush, Hannity, Ingraham, Levin get ahold of this!!

McCain better hammer this "Trooper Gate investigation".  I't gone political.  The investigator is seen in photos with Obama!!!

What if Justice went after Obama about financial ties to Convicted FELON REZCO WITH THE RESULTS TO BE ANOUNCED 2 WEEKS PRIOR TO A GENERAL ELECTION?!?!

WANA GUESS THE REACTION IN THE MEDIA OR NUTROOTS?!?!

This is going to have the same backlash at that hit piece on McCain and his "affair". Ohhhh...also the refusal to publish his Op-Ed.

GET THE POPCORN READY!!!

Another stinker! Can't you

Another stinker! Can't you just smell the fear coming from the left? I can. Obama and his supporters, which includes most of the MSM, know darn well that his election is in danger of tanking all because of this fabulous woman. They want to kill her, politically, using any method available. Note to MSM: Good luck with that! The more you try to tear this woman apart, the more support she will gain. Cancel these intellectual toilets

I hate to say it, but I think it's time to cancel all these old media publications in mass. This garbage has brought me to the border of anger and down right violence. I understand the Gov. Palin pick put the Democratic values to the test, but we see now they've failed miserably. They now insult our intelligence and mock this great country.

Just more phishing

Whenever someone comes in to take over and straighten out an organization that is precisely the best time to make radical changes because that is what and when everyone expects it. Firing someone is fairly common especially if they have been part of the corruption and problem. As the Governor she has and had the right to put whomever she wanted to into jobs or positions. Who would you want working with you; someone you know and trust or someone whom you know is out to back stab you and scuttle every effort at reforming the organization. I have been in this position many times. Firing those kinds of parasites is an exhilerating experience. Kind of a bonus.

I liked Palin long before

I liked Palin long before the media started attacking her credibility.  Now I am in LOVE with her and what she stands for.  Don't forget, I am the same guy that has gotten in arguments with many of my fellow Newsbusters collegues because I don't care much for G. Bush OR Dick Cheney.  I am an independent voter that was actually going to vote for Hilary over McCain!  I am telling you this because I think the media's bad behavior is going to sway a LOT more people like myself to vote in favor of McCain/Palin.

The only people that believe this hogwash the MSM is spewing are the people that were in the "bag" for Obama from the very beginning.  Meanwhile, the MSM is running of every other undecided voter in the Country.

Hey mm... Well, you

Hey mm...

Well, you brought a big ol' smile to this gal's face before she closes out for the night.

Thank you for your post, made me most happy.

Yeah, I am happy too.  I am

Yeah, I am happy too.  I am sure we are going to win now. The MSM must think the American voters are stupid.  Boy will they be in for a surprise.

Isn't the NYT stock in the cellar these days?

Hasn't it gone from like $50 a share down to something near $11? I saw a graphic on FreeRepublic showing a steep drop in price over the last five years.

“She is bright and has unfailing political instincts,” said Steve
Haycox, a history professor at the University of Alaska. “She taps very
directly into anxieties about the economic future.”

“But,” he added, “her governing style raises a lot of hard questions.”

And the author goes on to enumerate exactly NONE of those "hard questions"

I was struck with the author's inability to understand "good old boy" and "experienced" often are synonymous.

Cutting the pork at the kiitchen table?  How symbolic and fitting is that?

"Us white folk will take care of you" - Barbara Walters

NB Contributers, Busier bees.

The NB team is going to be busier than bees till election citing every media piece that does anything less than praise Palin as the most qualified to be President VP candidate ever or says/writes anything that could possibly be considered less than high praise.  They're just doing their  job as bricks in the wall protecting Palin against any scrutiny.

Their HAS been a lot of BS flying around about Palin, but I find  NB isn't doing much of a job correcting the BS.  Including this piece.  Maybe that's not their job.

So far, I like Palin, very much personally, not yet for possible POTUS (Dan Quayle and others have shown just about anyone can be VP).  I thought she did a very good job in the Charlie Gibson interview even considering much of it was obviously scripted.  She gave good answers, she gave credible corrections to all negatives about her that Charlie asked about.  I like the positions she took, rightly deferring to McCain as the leader who sets the stand on issues. And for the most part I liked her stand on issues.  She also came across very well.  As someone who's opinions on NB are dismissed or contradicted,  I trust this will daze and confuse some members at least for a while.

Abe, you have been exposed here at NB as an Obamaton.

No one here with an IQ above room temperature gives a rat's left gonad what you have to say about anything.

Ok, besides Joe Biden.  But the fact Niden likes to shoot off at the mouth doesn't mean the Obamanite Camp doesn't try to coach him.  Maybe he's just incorrigible, have you thought of that?

"Us white folk will take care of you" - Barbara Walters

Let's just put it this way

Let's just put it this way Abe, everything about Palin so far has been impeccable.  She is the perfect example of a "nobody" in America being able to achieve great things.  With nothing but a dream and some ambition, she enters some pageants.  Soon she becomes a leader in her school district, leading to a successful career as a mayor, then to a governor!  Plus, she never forgets about her womanhood, her motherhood or her faith!  Not to mention she has kept her appearance absolutely beautiful after all those kids!!  The woman is a diamond in the rough.  She stands for everything that is good and wholesome in this great nation of ours.  You know it and I know it.  What has Biden done that is so much better?  What about Obama?  Hilary? How about Carter?  Let's see, you had a peanut farmer, a community activist, a woman that married a smart man...

ummmm...Abe?

Too bad the MSM lost all credibility before this EXPOSE

This must be the result of the airdrop of investigators into Alaska. Every idiot with a grudge got to air it and the NYT wrote it all down. A shame that the MSM spent the last three weeks discrediting themselves with Palin smears or someone might actually believe some of this "expose". As it is now, only those already "very afraid" (oooooo, scary neocon) will latch onto it and say, "See we told you she was scary!"

More Democratic sour grapes

The article especially criticizes Governor Palin for secrecy.  From an American Thinker blog:

Barack Obama apparently wishes his two autobiographies to be the definitive record of his past. He has blocked efforts by others who wish to independently examine his past.

He won't allow his transcript from his undergraduate days at Columbia University to be released.

He "lost" his thesis on Soviet nuclear policy (see "Where in the World is Obama's Missing Thesis" which might provide insight regarding his seeming lack of knowledge about Soviet policy during the Kennedy years).

He won't answer questions about his days at Harvard Law School.

He "lost" his Illinois Senate records.

He will only release a simple one-page letter from his doctor on his medical condition.

He won't release his application to the state bar, which, as National Review's Jim Geraghty notes raises questions about whether he told the truth about parking tickets and drug use, among other issues.

He won't disclose list of his clients from his law firm days or the nature of the work he did for them as a lawyer (his clients include the indicted political fixer Tony Rezko).

He walks away from uncomfortable questions about Rezko at a news conference.

His cultists try to shut down inquiry into his stewardship of the Chicago Annenberg Challenge by sliming a journalist investigating his days at the helm of that group, which blew through $100 million dollars with no discernible benefit for the schools and students that it was putatively designed to help  (what does the constitutional law lecturer say to the chilling of free speech by his acolytes?).

He tries to muddle his long-standing ties with Pastor Wright by producing a version of his attendance record at Trinity Church that is sharply at variance with previous versions he has given ("Obama Re-invents his Trinity Church History").

The MSM are going through the 5 stages......

Due to their staggering loss of readers/viewers and credibility, the MSM are exhibiting all the classic signs of going through the 5 stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance.

When their guy Kerry lost handily in 2004, they went into denial.  How could Kerry have lost to someone like Bush, especially after all the hard work they did for Kerry?

Now that Palin represents a further threat to their existence, they have progressed to the second stage: anger.  The MSM have dropped any pretense of objectivity they may have had and now are showing outright, blatant hostility toward conservatives.

Soon, the MSM will realize that the reason they are losing their viewers and readers is because they have not done a good job of concealing their biases.  So they will feign remorse to the American people and bargain for forgiveness and a second chance.

In a few years, when the MSM have lost virtually all of their viewers and readers, the will reach the stage of depression.

And finally, once they sober up from their drinking binges brought on by the depression, they will come to acceptance of their plight and seek out their old jobs in government and academia.

Two Things...

First, the GOP has no chance of carrying NY and the only people who believe the drivel the NYT publishes anymore live there. Second, the author claims a newly elected official cleaned some house and installed her own people??? Why that's absurd... never happens.

»→ KILLBILL

Thanks for pointing out this bit of hypocrisy among the Dems.

Seems to me Bill Clinton required the resignations of all his Federal Prosecutors at the beginning of his administration - nothing said.

Bush demanded resignations of a considerable number, but not all - HUGE UPROAR

Gov. Palin demands wholesale resignations - She has an agenda!

I would damned well hope a new Governor has an agenda.

"Us white folk will take care of you" - Barbara Walters

   But in a way.... this

But in a way.... this NYT piece is actually a recomendation for Mrs. Palin.  It shows she is tough and can get things done.  Politics is not a game for the weak.  All the critics of Palin who claim she's 'not ready' or is just a mom of five kids that's in over her head will not be comforted by this article.  It makes barry's life story look like a lost teenager who hasn't yet found himself and has all kinds of fanciful daydreams about becoming someone famous.

NYT, Yuk!

The NYT has a great history of calling it right! In 1959, it labeled Fidel Castro as a great patriot who would bring democracy to Cuba! In 1960, It stated that Patrice Lumumba was the answer to the Congo's [Zaire's] problems. In 1962 it stated that Ahmed Ben-Bella was a wecome change for Algeria after years of French rule, [They may have been right there!]. I could go on and on all the way to the present day but I won't! My point is, the NYT has always taken the side of the loser and trashed the winner. Furthermore, they have a love affair with Socialists, heck Communists, that they just cannot control. Its a small wonder they woul go after Governor Palin. She represents a complete opposite of anything dear to their Commie Kissing hearts!

My only fear

I am a conservative second to no one, and I think Obama's ideas will transform this country for the worse in a heartbeat.

Obama isn't a "new force for change", he is a Jimmy Carter and a bridge to 1979 in a new package.

My only fear and concern is that we here at Newsbusters and other portals of alternative media are well-versed in these kinds of MSM drive-by hit pieces.

How many of the regular Joe's out there still get ALL their information from the MSM?  I would bet more than a majority, which is the scary part.  6 weeks of this negative, biased, Obama-surge in the media, 6 weeks of anti-Palin I feel is going to have an effect.

I predict that McCain-Palin will actually be down a few heading into the debates.....I don't worry about Palin v. Biden, I actually worry about McCain v. Obama.  Obama will be graded on a F=A grading scale; you know it and I know it.

Your thoughts on how to combat this?

Peggy Noonan got it right in Saturday's Wall Street Journal: Gov Palin is bulletproof to the character assasination attempts of her and her family by the Democrats.

Yawn!!

Funny - wasn't it Mrs. Hillary Clinton who, while in the White House, fired the people working in the White House travel office and replaced them with her own friends? Wasn't Harry Thomas given a job of some sort there? The New York Times sends how many reporters to Alaska to dig up whatever dirt they can find?
