Whether it's the suddenly surging McCain-Palin ticket, or Joe Biden doing what he does best -- shooting from the hip when he should be tight-lipped! -- the Democrat vice presidential nominee made a statement on the stump today that will make conservatives giggle, liberals cringe, and media members pray nobody sees it (transcript after the jump):
Hillary Clinton is as qualified or more qualified than I am to be Vice President of the United States of America. Let’s get that straight. She’s a truly close personal friend; she is qualified to be President of the United States of America. She’s easily qualified to be Vice President of the United States of America and quite frankly it might have been a better pick than me, but she is first-rate.
You think this will make Democrats even more edgy about the way things are going?
Yes, that was a rhetorical question.
Of course, what makes this even more delicious is what Obama told CNN's Candy Crowley back in June:
Calling his choice of running mate "the most important decision that I will make before I am president," the senator from Illinois said he would "be deliberate and systematic about it, because this will be my final counselor when I am making decisions in the White House, and I want to make sure I get it
I get it's reassuring to the junior senator from Illinois that the person he picked doesn't agree with his decision.
Honestly, you can't make this stuff up.

September 10, 2008 - 18:28 ET by joejm65If Biden leaves, then who will replace him? Hillary? If that happens, you might as well put her at the top of the ticket. Such a move would complete the political neutering of Obama. For Hillary to get on now as VP, there would have to be a power-sharing arrangement that would effectively destroy the carefully-cultivated Messiah image of Obama. So, if it's not Hillary, then perhaps another female VP pick? Good luck. No one he picks would inspire Palinmania, such a move would look transparent and desperate. ANY kind of move would illustrate the complete failure of Obama's judgement. VP is the first major decision a POTUS candidate makes. I don't think he could survive if he dumped Biden.

For all I know Biden said this to actually hold on to the VP position by making it harder for Obama & Co. to jettison Biden in the most "acceptable" way - sudden illness. Any other reason is plain political suicide.

I don't think anyone would
September 10, 2008 - 18:11 ET by GregEI don't think anyone would be surprised if we have an October surprise like never before. Especially if we hear this from Biden more than just this once. HEAR ME OUT.....
It is very possible that he's making a case so he can step out of the way. Think about it. If he's looking to step aside, yet doesn't talk up Hillary, then she looks like a second choice instead of a first. But if the first choice Biden talks her up as someone much more capable than him, then if she slips into the slot then it may still be a "second choice" in actuality, but "best choice" logically if Biden, the current first choice, is the one promoting this.
We've heard little from Biden. Democrats are not excited about Biden. To them he's a candidate. He's not great, he's not bad, he's simply a candidate, and their real bread and butter excitement is Obama so they're not really concerned with this particular current VP one way or the other.
I don't think this would happen, BUT let me say that it would not be a surprise to me. And with the excitement of Palin for Republicans, what event could take place that would INSTANTLY suck the Palin air right out of the newsrooms and instantly insert a "wow" factor that the news media would not be able to get enough of??? That event would be the event of Biden announcing he's stepping down for personal reasons after having talked up Hillary as "most qualified," and then Hillary being announced by Obama as the very best VP candidate, with Biden having given credibility to that by he himself talking her up to build into this - all his talk having been to that point disguised and perceived as just talk to ensure they keep the Hillary supporter vote on the Obama side. And, because she's already well-known and has campaigned all over the nation just as much as Obama has, there are no "introductions" that need to happen and she basically picks up where she left off and continues campaigning with nothing needing to be said regarding "who is this person." And because of this same reasoning, it can be something announced later than a person that has not been so much in the news as she has for the last 20 months. They couldn't do it TOO terribly late, but her being known already can give them a surprise that isn't available with any other person, and it still not be too late in the election for it to happen. With anyone else, it would have to happen earlier.
I know I'm REALLY stretching it, but don't put this past them. The "excitement" in the Democrat party would fly off the charts if this sudden occurrence took place.

Look, the Dems are in BIG, BIG trouble, and they know it. The only way Obama can win now is if some serious dirt is found on Sarah, or some HUGE gaffe by made her or McCain. This worm has turned, and the Dems know it.
So, they might need an October surprise that would involve Biden stepping down, Hillary stepping in, and a switch in the white female vote. ns

Yes and No
September 10, 2008 - 18:33 ET by Mr. BishopI tend to agree. However, I do also remember back when Bill was being nailed to the wall over Monica. When he decided to attack Afghanistan, right after it was all coming out -- he was getting hammered by the MSM even, about that. It was far too transparent to ignore. However, they DID ignore the numerous other times he did so.
Look back at history -- every single scandal that was erupting with Clinton, was marked with major US military offensives in one area, or another. Clinton enjoyed using the US military to try and take the heat off his own life. Total crap in my opinion, but not above the Clinton's to do something drastic to try and influence political sway and MSM coverage, their way.

September 10, 2008 - 18:29 ET by Mr. BishopAnd if it happens... then I know I won't be shocked. I heard Rush mention early last week that it was looking like Biden may get dumped overboard. After Palin's speech last week, he said it with more certainty.
Let's be honest here -- if Palin continues to ride this wave of support and the hatred of the MSM, the Democrats will have to try and do something. The problem is that Clinton cannot and will not settle for second fiddle. She wants the big seat -- period. As such, if she were to take a Veep spot, expect an assassination attempt on Obama within his first term, should he be elected. One would think that she couldn't be that stupid -- but for her, she feels the MSM has got her back, and they would string up some innocent right-wing nutbag for it...

Totally agree Mr. B, that's
September 10, 2008 - 21:16 ET by ladyrvtTotally agree Mr. B, that's exactly how it would shake down. And the attempt would not only be successful, but would probably happen before the inauguration. The Clintons have left a long and bloody trail of anyone who crossed them or stood in their way.
My only surprise would be that more voters would want another Clinton in the White House, than TRUE and PROVEN Reformers McPalin. And Sarahcuda beats all three guys, and Hillary, in years of executive experience; small business owner, mayor, and Governor of our largest state with an 80% approval rating, is nothing to sneeze at and officially makes her the best candidate of anyone in the race for Pres or Veep.
The other four candidates (BO, JB, HRC, and McCain) are legislators. What sets McCain apart is that he has actually served his country - rather than his own party - in both the military and the Senate, actually authored or sponsored legislation, and worked with both sides of the aisle.

September 10, 2008 - 20:17 ET by celatorBT, there seems to be something in the air on that issue, as noted in everyone's comments. Mark Levin raised the issue in a serious way tonight, suggesting that Biden's departure is being discussed in the smoke-filled rooms of the D leadership. They know he is not polling well, that he is not well regarded in D circles, and that he is basically someone who is not helping the ticket. As others have said, he may just take himself out of the race, and Hillary would step in the slot. Who knows?
If he does, what does that do to the Hillary followers? Do they race back to the D ticket? Would they see the whole thing as an incredibly jaded move by D's? Would the MSM turn on Obama for the decision? (probably not, I suppose). Are they by now pretty comfortable with Palin and to "show" Obama what's what, stay with the R ticket (those that have said they would support it), If you read the PUMA blogs, they really loath Obama. I couldn't believe what I heard when Biden said this today...I just caught about 3/4 of his statement coming in from outside, so thought I may have misheard this...then I saw where Hermano had a post on OT about this, so I didn't feel like I was mistaken with his own words...and posted as such there.
Nope...I think Hill's on the way...or possibly some kind of a trial balloon being thrown out there..nevertheless, I do think he is going to be replaced, Hill or not.
Obama and team are terrified....as they should be...nothing is going to help them though...too little, too late.

September 10, 2008 - 19:58 ET by txcoIs Joe questioning Obama's judgement???? Shouldn't Obama have picked the most qualified person? This should enrage all the Hillary fans...even their VP pick thinks they got screwed by Obama....
Hard to wrap your mind around Joe's comments on this....as usual....he is just so much smarter than everyone else.
Or.... maybe Biden was
September 10, 2008 - 20:32 ET by Chris NormanOr.... maybe Biden was trying, in his own clumsy, gaffe prone way, to ingratiate himself to the audience, by being "humble" and "modest". Despite Obama/Biden's bad week, maybe we're reading way too much into it. It's fun speculating, though.

I don't know...
September 10, 2008 - 20:51 ET by Indiana JoeSure, it's fun to make fun of Biden for the remark. Gettin' to be like shootin' fish in a barrel. But I don't think it was an offer to resign. Maybe he's just kissing up to Hillary for '12. Maybe even he sees the writing on the wall, and is considering his own future.

KHARMA IS COMING...
September 10, 2008 - 21:01 ET by john5750KHARMA IS COMING TO BITE OBAMA IN THE AZZ FOR HAVING HIS GOONS STEAL ALL THOSE CAUCUS DELEGATES FROM HILLARY.
IF THE DNC HAD ANY BRAINS THEY WOULD DUMP CORRUPT OBAMA AND PUT HILLARY ON TOP OF THE TICKET WHERE SHE BELONGS.
BUT NO, THEY WOULD ALL RATHER FAIL. PATHETIC.

September 10, 2008 - 21:32 ET by HermanoI can still see Rudy Guiliani's words hanging in the air like in a cartoon... "You may want to get that VP offer in writing, Joe."

September 10, 2008 - 21:37 ET by bigtimerHermano...you've got a memory like a steel trap!
That's right...and I cracked up laughing then, but seriously thinking Joe, take you'd better take heed...
Oh this is too much fun...who knew how much fun this was all going to turn out to be.

I am a little torn at this
September 10, 2008 - 21:57 ET by HermanoI am a little torn at this moment. I, too, am having just too much fun watching this train wreck. I also think that Obama knows that he is in deep doodoo and it ain't gonna get any better. As a result, I am worried about Hillary stepping in and "saving" the world from a real woman. I agree it would look bad, and I am not even sure she would want to step in. When Sarah was selected by McCain, I was elated. I had told my wife two months before that she would be a great choice - thanks to Free's information.

September 10, 2008 - 22:17 ET by ladyrvtI'm actually starting to get seriously scared for Sarah's safety more than anyone else's. The Dems/MSM have not only lost all credibility, but any change to their ticket would be losing face.
Their only Hope, I fear, is not in finding dirt on Sarah (because look how well that's worked out so far) but eliminating her permanently, and the Left has
