Remember a few weeks ago when supposedly impartial media members were angered by a McCain ad that likened Barack Obama to Britney Spears?
Well, the stage that Obama will be giving his acceptance speech from Thursday evening was actually built by the same guy that designs Britney Spears' concert sets.
I kid you not.
As reported by the NY Post Thursday (emphasis added, photo courtesy NYP):
As if a Rocky Mountain coronation were not lofty enough, Barack Obama will aim for Mount Olympus when he accepts his party's nomination atop an enormous, Greek-columned stage - built by the same cheesy set team that put together Britney Spears' last tour. [...]
"We've done Britney's sets and a whole bunch of rock shows, but this was far more elaborate and complicated and we had to do it in far less time," said Allen, of RDA Entertainment.
"The biggest challenge has been making sure we don't damage the playing field underneath."
Asked who is harder to sat isfy [sic] - the Democrats or Britney - Allen replied: "I better not answer that."
Think the gushing media masses will be reporting this interesting little tidbit this evening?
Yes, that's a rhetorical question.

August 28, 2008 - 13:18 ET by ForeverOnTheRightThis set I tell ya, does this Barry's ego have no bounds? The set has all the earmarks of a egomaniac. Could he not have made his acceptance speech inside the convention like all his predecessors? Does he need all that adulation that a full stadium affords him? Yes, I know he will say that he wants to be as inclusive of as many people as he can, but we know that’s a bunch of nonsense.

This is harsh but...
August 28, 2008 - 13:47 ET by Remixer96I don't normally come at NB this hard, but I think this is a really stupid story.
First, it's EXTREMELY unlikely Obama personally picked this group. I highly doubt he really has time to micromanage the setup of the stage. Thus, his staff (or the DNC staff) likely set it up, simply calling up people who had done big backdrops before. How many stage groups have experience handling sets on a football stadium sized scale? I'm betting not so many.
Second, now presuming the unlikely scenario that Obama had input, what are you implying about the choice of "Britney's" set crew? Does that somehow justify McCain's ads that claim Obama's not ready to lead? How does choosing a set crew who's handled events on similar scales before logically follow to that conclusion?
Sorry for being harsh, but I just think this particular story is very pointless.
Also
August 28, 2008 - 13:48 ET by Remixer96I forgot to mention, I'm not a big fan of the set either. I just think that the story above about the Britney connection is meaningless.
Remix
August 28, 2008 - 13:54 ET by Cool ArrowIt's not a big story, really.

But that's my point
August 28, 2008 - 14:08 ET by Remixer96Hiring this stage crew, in all likelihood, has zilch to do with anything said by either candidate.
So why make a story about it?
And besides, trying to link it via the people involved gets really murky. Obama, who manages his staff, who hired set guys, who were previously hired by Birtney's Spears' people, who were likely managed by her agent, who worked for her.
I guess I just don't see the humor in suggesting that chain of second-hand employees creates a connection between Obama and Spears.

August 28, 2008 - 17:15 ET by Indiana JoeWell, speaking for myself, the main topic of discussion seems to be the ridiculous Greek temple setting. The fact that BS's set crew was hired for BO's set-build is just a delicious dash of irony in the recipe.

August 28, 2008 - 13:58 ET by DontFeedTheTrollsWell, I guess that Obama and the DNC couldn't have just used a simple stage and podium (or the convention center (which is already paid for) where everyone else spoke) because they are fat with cash in this depression we are in and they want to help the Denver economy.

August 28, 2008 - 14:05 ET by KillgraveSome of you are being really jokey about Obama "descending to" or "rising up" from the stage. But I want to be serious here.
What is going to happen is that the whole stadium will go dark, and suddenly there will be a huge thunder clap, with a dazzling bolt of lightning striking the stage, and from the resulting cloud of smoke, Obama will walk out, with a very intense look on his face.
The stadium will then fill with the swelling notes of Thus Spake Zarathustra as Obama mimes through a truly amazing set of magic tricks and illusions. The set will follow a highly nuanced and complex narrative of hope and change. He will, before the eyes of thousands, transform mundane (and sometimes ugly) objects to the stuff of dreams.
And at the set's climax, Obama will shower, from thin air, cakes and loaves of bread into the crowd, which at this point will be in the throes of ecstasy. This will be done to the Barry White classic "Can't Get Enough of Your Love, Babe"

You're seeing this with natural sunlight before it's complete. This evening, with stagelights on, and black curtains covering what you're not supposed to see, this will look spectacular...especially on TV.
This set designer knows what he's doing, and tonight is guaranteed to be the spectacle the media are hoping for. On top of that, I must disagree with Peggy Noonan who fretted about the acoustical dangers of doing this in a football stadium. To be sure, the sound might not be great for those in attendance. However, for the millions watching on TV, the sound will be just fine. It's not that complicated in the year 2008. This isn't a band. It's one speaker with one microphone.

This is disgusting! It pans me to see how much money is wasted on the grandiosity of one man. If he can't win without all the fanfare, he just lost my vote!
clearly Obama has lost the plot on this one, does he think he is some sort of God that needs a temple? how on earth does a greek temple and this sort of backdrop relate to the hard working US families and blue collar workers he needs to vote him? Clearly MCCain will be able to place clear blue water between the star struck democrat and sound secure sensible policies!
It's not a Greek Temple. Tomorrow is the anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech in front of the Lincoln Memorial. That 'temple' is a replica of the front of the Lincoln Memorial. Obama is basically saying that when he accepts the nomination, he will be the physical embodiment of Dr. King's 'dream'. This man's arrogance has no bounds.
Obama's egotism is starting to get creepy. Temple and airplane props? Speeches to filled stadiums?

Obama strokes his ego and inflates taxpayer expenses
August 28, 2008 - 16:52 ET by Hunter12In addition to being a huge waste of money in terms of what the Obama campaign is spending, let's consider the logistics of securing an open-air stadium with a seating capacity of 76,000 and a closed arena with seating for 20,000. Will the US taxpayer be responsible for the added manpower? According to the HuffPo, it will.
The Secret Service has asked for an extra $9.5 million to cover unexpected costs of protecting the presidential candidates during what has turned into an historic year for the agency's campaign security job. Among other things, the extra money would be used for the added costs for the candidates' international travel and a late-in-the-game decision by Barack Obama to accept the Democratic nomination at Denver's Invesco Field at Mile High _ an open-air, 76,000-seat stadium _ instead of the 20,000-seat Pepsi Center, which is the site of the party's national convention.
Obama has also created additional costs for the media. [Hey, he can't be all bad.]
The move to Invesco Field represents a logistical nightmare and demonstrates a fiscal irresponsibility on the part of the DNC and Obama Campaign. Network executives, quick to promote the move are now realizing that the new venue will cause their networks to blow their budgets set aside for the Democratic Convention. With ad slots already sold, the networks are unable to adjust their costs and now must swallow hundreds of thousands of dollars in new costs to cover the convention. The move is also questionable considering that the DNC has fallen far short of raising of the $40 million that they estimated the convention to cost. As a result the DNC has already scaled back on festivities and are likely to make further cuts to accommodate the estimated $3 million price tag for the Invesco speech. Knowing how political parties operate, it is safe to assume that the actual price tag will most likely balloon to well over $5 million.
Let's pick a number out of the air, say $10 million bucks of taxpayer and donors' money down the drain for this extravaganza to ego. Obama's right, this isn't politics as usual. In the United States, we've never had Roman spectacle before.

I am ONE taxpayer who is totally ticked off to think the government should be paying for anything connected to this extravaganza! Time to put an end to conventions - in this day of instant electronic communication, it isn't necessary to spend all the money that has been spent in the last year and a half! Oops...there I go again...I guess the spending is helping the economy...if the money is actually changing hands!
