NYT's Dowd Not Buying Media's Democrat Unity Sales Pitch

Photo of Noel Sheppard.

As media members fall over themselves to sell viewers and readers on the idea that everything is now hunky dory between Obama and Clinton supporters as a result of Hillary's convention speech Tuesday, one high-profile press figure isn't buying it.

In fact, the New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd even went so far as to quote someone in her most recent article who depicted the "weird and jittery" vibe inside the Pepsi Center as "Submerged hate."

Not exactly what you're getting from all those Obama-loving media sycophants out there, is it?

With that in mind, grab some peanuts, popcorn, or Cracker Jacks, kick up your feet, and enjoy the following Dowd column published Wednesday (emphasis added):

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

[T]his Democratic convention has a vibe so weird and jittery, so at odds with the early thrilling, fairy dust feel of the Obama revolution, that I had to consult Mike Murphy, the peppery Republican strategist and former McCain guru.

“What is that feeling in the air?” I asked him.

Submerged hate,” he promptly replied.

There were a lot of bitter Clinton associates, fund-raisers and supporters wandering the halls, spewing vindictiveness, complaining of slights, scheming about Hillary’s roll call and plotting trouble, with some in the Clinton coterie dissing Obama by planning early departures, before the nominee even speaks.

At a press conference with New York reporters on Monday, Hillary looked as if she were straining at the bit to announce her 2012 exploratory committee. [...]

She added insult to injury by coming out Tuesday night looking great in a blazing orange pantsuit and teaching the precocious pup Obama something about intensity and message. She thanked her “sisterhood of the traveling pantsuits,” and slyly noted that Obama would enact her health care plan rather than his. [...]

Afterward, some of her supporters began crying, as they were interviewed by reporters, saying that her speech had proved that she would make a better president than Obama. And, as one said, she would only give him “two months” to prove himself. [...]

At a meeting of the Democratic women’s caucus Tuesday, 74-year-old Carol Anderson of Vancouver, Wash., a former Hillary volunteer, stood in the back of the room in a Hillary T-shirt and hat signed by Hillary and “Nobama” button and booed every time any of the women speakers mentioned Obama’s name.

She’s voting for McCain and had nothing nice to say about the Obamas.
Not what you're getting from the rest of the sycophants, is it?

Even much of Fox News is

Even much of Fox News is pushing the "party unity" line without that much skepticism. When Brit Hume asked Chris Wallace last night if Hillary's "endorsement of Obama was "political rather than personal", Wallace didn't seem to quite know what to make of that.

McNotObama '08

re:Even much of Fox News is

just wondering... Is Fox News smart enough to be playing dumb on the issue just to not give the dis-unified party members a reason to go back and vote for ObamaHussein just to spite Fox News?   If Fox News says the Dems are disjointed and are not going to support Obama, then the Demophants "Fox News is bad" mentality might kick in.

This is a great article, NS

Goth posted it as the first item of the Open Thread today.

Submerged hate, indeed.

As you noted last nite, HRC didn't release her delegates, perhaps because of the (lack of) roll call situation?

I don't think this convention is going exactly according to plan, is it?

And the icing on the cake will be Bill Clinton tonight.  He'll upstage Biden for sure, and who knows what added bonus(es) we'll get if he decides to really let loose.

Let the games continue.

Blonde, you've got a good sense of style. Is it just me, or do all the flashing lights, giant video screens, etc. on the podium make the Democrats look like they're inside a giant pinball machine?

All those flashing lights may be inducing epileptic seizures.

Chris

I hadn't thought about it, but it's an apt description.  Actually, I think they fell right into McCain's "Hollywood Celeb" trap.  The whole thing smacks of some gigantic awards ceremony to me.  Even to the music, and the way these pols sashay onto the stage when their names are announced.

I'm watching Fox....Chris Wallace just had a piece on how Obama's campaign is now regretting the Invesco stadium thing Thursday night....too much "rock star"....so now we're hearing Bambi's speech will be "workmanlike".

Finally, this is Clinton's convention.  Susan Estrich had it right, Bambi should have paid off Hillary's debt six weeks ago, with the priviso that she & Bill get to speak on the first night only, must release her delegates immediately, and both of them must enthusiastically deliver speeches that Obama staffers write.

Tactically, this convention has been a disaster.  If this is the best they can do inside a pinball machine, imagine what an Obama administration would do if faced with another September 11th situation.  Frightening.

P.S.  Thanks for the compliment, for that I promise I'll never call you "Sebastian".  :)

workmanlike, eh?

"Yo baby, love them hooters.  Ooh, ooh.  Belch!"  [scratches butt]*

* Yes, I know this is a stereotype, but coming from a "workmanlike" background and living in a rural area with lots of "workmanlike" folk, I choose to play my "artistic license" card and absolve me of any guilt or derision.

Ha! I don't know about where

Ha! I don't know about where all this is going. I commented a few times on how the debate sets looked like the candidates were competing on the "Weakest Link" or "Jeopardy!". I suppose this Vegas-style podium/hall is the natural culmination of where we're going with the whole election process. Give me the old style podiums where they looked like tiered wedding cakes with old ladies sitting in the tiers below the speaker, shuffling papers. I suppose that's from when work actually went on at conventions instead of them being, like you said, just big award ceremonies. Next time, I fully expect dancers on the stage, "interpreting" the party platform...

McNotObama '08

Interpretive dancers....

Too funny.

Let's see.  Why don't we make Bill the Costume Designer.

Maybe Madonna doing Hillary.

I hope our side takes a few notes and goes very conservative (hmmmm)....red, white, and blue....tasteful stage, etc.

Speaking of traditional convention stuff...Barry won't be able to have any balloons in the outdoor venue, will he?  Too bad, another oversight.  That's always the best part...like fireworks.

David Gregory, do you know which damn network you lie for? ~ Uncle Jimbo, @Blackfive

If he were in California

those balloons would have been banned due to environmental harm.

I'm actually not sure about the stadium whether or not there are covered seats that they could drop some balloons from.  Most new stadiums have some covered seats.  The Lambeau Field model of completely open seating has not been used all that often.

I think one of the bigger problems is that the crowd noise in the stadium will tend to be more muted than in an enclosed venue like a basketball arena.  Yes, it will be louder with 75K people, but one's expectations of the noise level of 75K should be higher as well.  A viewer might say "Wow, I thought 75K people would be a lot louder than it actually is."

For their "green"

For their "green" convention the Democrats specified "biodegradable balloons" - they're having trouble making them "biodegrade". Wooden - not plastic - hotel keys - they didn't work. "Organic cotton" souvenir fanny packs - they were having trouble finding a US manufacturer that was unionized. It goes on and on. Like I said elsewhere, the only thing really "green" about this convention is their inexperienced nominee.

McNotObama '08

That is hilarious, Chris!

That is hilarious, Chris! Failed at every turn!

I wonder how their food demands worked out...the 5 colors on the plate, local organic stuff, etc.

They are truly laughingstocks, and they don't even know it!

have you guys seen this cartoon about the balloons?

Dee, I remember reading somewhere that at the end of his speech, it would snow confetti. No mention of the problem with balloons.

It will be interesting to see what happens MB

mb,
I was rolling when I found out their pathetic attempts at being green were all crashing and burning. When I heard that they were to be served "local organic" stuff, I was wondering if in Colorado, that meant a bowl of shale oil. They truly are parodies of themselves.

McNotObama '08

Well....

The no fried food thing kind of got my attention early on.  Wonder how the dems cook those Rocky Mountain Oysters, hmmmm?  That's "local organic" isn't it?

Blonde,On the RNC website,

Blonde,

On the RNC website, they say that the podium set is specifically designed to be plainer than the Dems - 1) to reflect the state of the economy (that sounds McCainish)and 2) to contrast with the Dems gaudiness and glitz and reflect McCain's more "plain" style. There are artist renderings of the hall on the site. It's a low stepped stage, with one giant screen in the back.

Hilliry speaks

she was in a Orange jump suite kinda like the ones they wear in PRISON hmmmmmmm I wonder. I will go on line and check the wanted posters and 10 most wanted just in case.

As I said last night in the chat room, this type of atmosphere tends to dampen enthusiasm for PCO work, phone calling, talking to friends, etc.  That can hurt a campaign mightily.

Keep speaking Truth to Lauer, Maureen!

Woe there, a second lucid

Woe there, a second lucid column from Dowd????  Has her medication been changed?  Ironic she speaks of submerged hate when she is the master of it in her shrill vicious anti-male hate filled bigoted screed pieces of how women are the victims of brutish male domination and insensitivity.  We may be seeing the beginning of a transformation in Dowd to a somewhat more sane and tolerant individual as she begins to accept the discontinuities in the Dem Party.  It's the true lib believers who do the actual Neocon conversion not the wannabes.

You know, I don't agree with

You know, I don't agree with Maureen Dowd a lot. But, sometimes she manages to hit the nail right on the head. Anyways, everyone says that if Hillary sabotages the Obamessiahs chances to win the election, that she's finished politically. I don't know about that. Remember, Ronald Reagan got elected in '80 after challenging Gerald Ford at the convention in '76.

Wait a minute!

She quoted a Republican Strategist!  What do you think he would say..."this is the best convention ever!"  Its in his and your best interest to win the election right?  Beyond that, I truly enjoy when you all use Dowd to support your positions....how convenient.

As convenient as the

As convenient as the Democrats having the Republican mayor of Fairbanks, Alaska (?!) appearing at their convention, voicing his support of Obama?

McNotObama '08

PTW

This site is about exposing liberal bias in the media...if politicians dare to support another party's position that is called bi-partisanship.  And my point was that Dowd is continually bashed for her liberal viewpoints...except when its aligned with your own....then she "nails" it.
