As NewsBusters has been reporting since early August, mainstream media members predictably gushed over author Ron Suskind's allegations that the Bush administration ordered the CIA to forge a letter showing a connection between Saddam Hussein and al Qaeda.
On Friday, both the CIA and its former director George Tenet refuted this and other claims Suskind made in his book "The Way of the World."
Given their fervor to report Suskind's views, it should be interesting to see how much attention these high-profile rebuttals get.
With that in mind, here's what the CIA had to say (h/t NBer Beresford):
In his book, “The Way of the World,” author Ron Suskind makes some serious charges about the CIA and Iraq. As Agency officers current and former have made clear, those charges are false. More than that, they are not in keeping with the way CIA works. In fact, they are profoundly offensive to the men and women who serve here, as they should be to all Americans.
Suskind claims that, in September 2003, the White House ordered then-Director George Tenet to fabricate a letter describing a level of cooperation between Saddam Hussein and al-Qa’ida that simply did not exist. The White House has denied making that request, and Director Tenet has denied receiving it. The former Agency officers Suskind cites in his narrative have, for their part, publicly denied being asked to carry out such a mission. [...]
Intelligence is a difficult profession. We are typically called upon to uncover information that the enemies of our country are most eager to conceal. When we fall short in that tough mission, we acknowledge our errors and learn from them. We are accustomed to criticism. But Suskind goes well beyond rational critique. Frankly, those he maligns with his book deserve far better.
Read the whole thing.
As for Tenet:
Suskind said the U.S. and the U. K. arranged a meeting with Habbush prior to the war
- We did not.
He said that the head of MI-6 flew to the US to brief me on these meetings
- He did not
He said that Habbush convinced us that Iraq had no WMD
- He did not
He said that the White House ignored this conclusion
- There was no such conclusion for them to ignore
He said CIA resettled Habbush in Jordan
- We did not settle him there or anywhere else
He said CIA paid Habbush $5 million in “hush money”
- We paid him not a cent
He said the White House ordered me to fabricate a letter tying Iraq to al Qa’ida.
- There was no such order
He said I passed the direction to senior members of my staff
- Again, there was no such order to pass.
Read the whole thing.
Will these rebuttals receive the kind of attention Suskind's allegations did? Stay tuned.

It doesn't matter to the MSM
August 23, 2008 - 23:46 ET by JnobleDon't let the facts get in the way of a good story, especially if it's at the expense of that darn Bush administration.
If this guy wrote his book praising Pres Bush, you would have never heard of him, at least not on the network shows.
Conservative - Radio Silent
August 24, 2008 - 08:08 ET by BeresfordEven conservative talk radio has been mostly silent on this.
I know they have a coronation to cover in Denver, but you'd hope that Rush, Hannity, Laura Ingraham or someone could spend just a few minutes letting the air out of this windbag, Suskind.
This story gets the gold medal for irony.
Here is a guy inventing stories about the administration inventing stories.
This critic of how the government did a shoddy job on WMD in Iraq says that the Admnistration heard what it wanted to hear.
The critic, Ron Suskind, does a shoddy job trying to prove the evilness of the Bush & Co. Why? Because he heard what he wanted to hear.
Sigh.
This is gonna really irk
August 24, 2008 - 00:00 ET by Captain RepusThis is gonna really irk Obammy - now on the very first day of his convention, all of the MSM shows are gonna be covering this Suskind/CIA/Bush conspiracy debunking.
Obammy and his handlers just can't get fair treatment from the MSM, can they.
Maybe in the interest of the public the media will hold off on reporting this until sometime after the election.
Yeah, I'm sure the news
August 24, 2008 - 00:18 ET by RESTLESS 1Yeah, I'm sure the news trucks are on their way out of Denver as we speak, to make sure this story is covered as it should be. /sarc

Really. I wish Tenet had
August 24, 2008 - 05:56 ET by motherbeltReally. I wish Tenet had released the statement 2 weeks ago. It might have had a chance at being reported.
Now, forget it. No one cares.
But then again, that's the point of these things. Suskind had his 15 minutes of fame and his big payout. Now if everything gets debunked, so what?
That's how the liberals operate. Get the slime out there. By the time it's proven wrong weeks later, our famous American ADD attention span has moved on to something else.
Actually, he did...
August 24, 2008 - 06:08 ET by BeresfordThere have been a steady stream of people saying Suskind got it wrong...including most of the people he (mis)quotes in the book about the main charges. Go to this link and scroll down. Tenet first denied Suskind's allegations August 4. Not a surprise that you didn't hear that in the MSM.

I remember that now. It
August 24, 2008 - 06:18 ET by motherbeltI remember that now. It appears the MSM buried that line pretty quickly.
Hours of flowers for Suskind with an "oh, btw, the CIA denies it." (of course they do, snicker!)
How come this blog page gets
August 24, 2008 - 00:12 ET by Captain RepusHow come this blog page gets stuck with those stupid pizza ads to my right instead of that great 'Up Your Arsenal' girl with the world-class legs?
Don't you have any pull here Noel?
Glad to see SOMEONE has
August 24, 2008 - 00:15 ET by RESTLESS 1Glad to see SOMEONE has their priorities straight around here.
(BTW, that's not a snark. I like her too. :))

Governmental conspiracies
August 24, 2008 - 07:38 ET by JWFLike all massive governmental conspiracies, this one needs a large number of people covering up for the illegal activites of a few, and a massive number of people remaining silent about the illegal activity, and the cover up. At the risk of what, death? jail? losing a job?
In the meantime, real government programs, legal government programs in a time of war are blown all the time with no consequences.
We knew this was a pack of lies on day one. The people interviewing the author knew it. But it fit the narrative so they ran with it. The refutations can be conveniently ignored now.
SUSKIND ON WNYC
August 24, 2008 - 07:41 ET by PaarlSometime in 2005 both Suskind and another writer Peter Galbreath were on the Bryan Lehrer show on WNYC in NYC of course. They both made allegations about Bushes lack of preparedness concerning meetings with high Middle east officials or some such. Galbreath related a story about Bushes refusal to read a briefing paper before a meeting with the King of Saudi Arabia at his ranch or Camp David and Suskind related a"story" of Bush not knowing anything about the Sunni/Shia difference and showed this ignorance in an important White House meeting in 2004. I was outraged by this allegation by Suskind and I found his email address and exchanged several emails with him asking him to provide evidence of this faux pas by Bush. He hedged and ahhed and ummed but in the end the only thing he would say is that it came from someone 'with knowledge' and that the truth would be exposed after the end of the Bush administration. Obvious a lie and Suskind was able
to give it credibility and a life of its own through the media.
The old saying of course..."that a lie is halfway around the world before the truth is rolling out of bed struggling to put on its boots "
Suskind is a consummate (spelling?) liar and proves it time after time...he just doesn't have the pizass of Woodward or Clinton !!!;>)
Paarl of Rhodesia
Boot
August 24, 2008 - 08:01 ET by jaywlI saw Suskind on one of FOX's shows. The host would say something like "But Tenet says that never happened." Suskind would get get this silly-ass smile, furl his eyebrows a little, cock his head and then say that Tenet, because he was CIA couldn't or wouldn't tell the truth about anything, so there! He has that look in the picture in today's post. That meant this jerk could say anything he wanted no matter what the participants said. I felt then, and now , that if I was talking to this little a-hole in a bar and he gave me that kind of twisted jerkass smile in response to me, I'd put my size 11 up "there', its the American way.
Hearsay and rumers are always enough to warrant trashing
August 24, 2008 - 08:25 ET by Dee Bunktrashing Republicans and they are given much less time to defend with actual first hand knowledge.
Anything said about a favored Dem on the other hand is treated as rumor even when there are multiple eye witnesses (Swift Boat Veterans) or Pictures combined with credible witnesses (Edwards affair). The media will even ignore sworn testimony and intelligence committee reports (Wilson/Plame hoax) and confessions (Armitage/Novak) to smear and even criminally convict a Republican who is innocent.
The reason this will get ignored
August 24, 2008 - 16:11 ET by Morgan Wickis that the left has moved on. It wasn't the CIA that did it, but that doesn't mean it didn't happen.
