Gold Medal Winner Kerri Walsh Thanks President Bush

Photo of Noel Sheppard.

A couple of astounding things happened at the Olympics on Thursday.

First, the American beach volleyball team of Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh successfully defended their gold medal victory in 2004 becoming the first in the sport to win back to back Olympic championships.

Second, during their post-match interview, Kerri grabbed the microphone, looked into the camera, and thanked President Bush (video available here courtesy our dear friend Ms Underestimated, h/t NBer Bruzilla):

Mr. President, we thank you. Thank you for your inspiration, and for all you do.

I'm sure this marvelous expression by this wonderful champion will be broadcast over and over again by America's Olympics-obsessed media. Errr, maybe not.

Of course, one must wonder how much more coverage this would get if Kerri said something bad about the President, or the Iraq War, or even better -- praised Barack Obama.

Or am I being too cynical for my own good?

*****Update: My dear friend Ms U sent us a higher quality, extended version of May and Walsh's victory interview. Enjoy.

I watched that match last night and was blown away. Those women are Jordan-esque.

And yeah, I was really surprised when Walsh said hello to the president. Sounds like W is a little more popular than the MSM would have us believe.

Popular? Well, I just

Popular? Well, I just learned that Walsh's name has been removed from every one of the country's pollster call lists. This popularity has to be stamped out somehow.

white house visit

I am sure they will be seeing the White House from the inside very soon.  Bush will clear his schedule to welcome these lovely ladies and obviously right-minded conservative athletes to Washington for an official recognition of their acheivement.

Obama would call these young ladies, "sweeties".

I agree....

...and it's because athletes know it's "okay" to be recognized as winners. They're not afraid of the evil "red marking pen" of conservatism. They LOVE to excel, and they will... not just be mediocre.

USA! USA! USA!

I would hope that all the medalists from these games get to see the White House from the inside soon.  It's a fitting honor for these athletes who have represented the United States so well.

I heard this line on Rush today but I really like it.

For a countrythat has 3% of the worlds population and uses 25% of the energy, we sure are kicking butt in the Olympics. Even with the Chinese cheating.

That was great. The folks in the booth at NBC must have been having a fit.

And you're right, Noel. If they had said something negative about the President or the War, or praised Obama, we probably would have heard more about this.

Yay Misty and Kerri!

Congratulations not only on being the 2-time Gold Medal winners in Women's Beach Volleyball, but also on being patriotic and classy enough to thank President Bush.  So sad that the MSM has buried this so fast and so deep.  Thanks to all who have TRIED to make it available on the internet.

Other comments are correct though: if they had thanked or praised Obama, or made some lefty political statement, or been critical of President Bush, it would have made headlines all over the world.

I'm sure they are in the

I'm sure they are in the minority, but....It goes to show you that not all young people are socialists in the making. I know Pres. Bush met with them beofre play started. i'm sure he was just down to earth with them and un-scripted.

Under the communists Keri Walsh would have been a basketball player. Instead she gets to plays the sport she wants to. Just another example of someone thinking on their own and not buying into the MSM mantra about Pres. Bush

Keri & Misty

These two ladies are truly class acts and outstanding athletes.  The cordial and respectful exchange between them and President Bush shows their genuine character.  The world could uses a few more women like these two.

"women and minorities hardest hit"

nbc is down on their luck this olympics ...

some observations:

1.  does anyone feel that NBC presents the viewer a sense that THEY own the olympic games?  they obviously own all the rights to broadcast it in the US, but i feel as if anytime, i'm going to hear dopey bob costas say "the NBC olympics here in beijing"

2. anyone notice when bob costas speaks in his special little lair ... all head-on shots of costas show the grand portrait of chairman mao just over his shoulder ... when the camera pans the whole interview table, it disappears ... as a matter of fact, the background doesn't seem the same at all ... check it out.

3. speaking of costas ... does anyone ever wonder why this clown, in all of his glory, is considered such an "authority" in sports?  it seems like every athlete that wins gold has to report to costas for a mandatory exit interview ... the medalists (only the winners of gold in sports that "matter to nbc" seem to warrant this right of passage) then get lobbed question after question that most of us don't need to hear answered.

4.  its hard to believe that china and nbc aren't in cahoots with this television deal ... i mean seriously, has american television ever presented a single badminton or ping pong (er ... table tennis) match ... now we suddenly get the entire tournament for both which lasts almost an entire week (all china golds of course).  then there is the blow-by-blow coverage of the chinese hurdler's injury only to be disrupted by a picture-in-picture coverage of the first american woman to win gold in the discus ... since 1932 (and she never got invited to costas' digs ... discus throwing to nbc is "not important enough")

5.  the announcers are getting really tiresome ... some of these people really need to shut the hell up.  you can't even get a thought in your head without them telling you the how/when/what/where and why you should feel a certain way when watching these events.  i think michael phelps' accomplishments are phenomenal ... i just don't need an announcer prompting me to think a certain way when i watch a sporting event.  many of the main commentators are NON-ATHLETES.  i recall espn (who probably SHOULD be broadcasting these games) airing live coverage of cal ripkin breaking gehrig's record ... they actually turned their mikes off for some 20 minutes to let the viewers soak up the experience and enjoy the moment in their own way... i'll always thank them for that gracious moment.

6.  why on earth would an american commentator ask a professional basketball player "if he was proud to wear the USA on his jersey"?  what other country on the planet bestows as much glory, money and fame on its athletic stars than this country ... i think collinsworth is still bitter over his "bungles" super bowl experiences ... sorry chris, not every athlete is as shallow as you.

7. lastly ... is anyone waiting for one of the athletes to pop one of the courtside/trackside interviewers in the mouth ... it's bad enough they get in these athletes face seconds after their event ... but they are particularly harsh on athletes that lose.  i've never felt so much pity on an olympic athlete as i did last night when a 16 year old american diver who didn't make the finals was introduced to the "nbc inquisition" and cried the entire time.  for crying out loud people, leave them alone ... we feel their pain when they lose; why rub salt in the wound by making them tell us how bad they feel to an audience of millions?

bottom line ... nbc is too big for their britches when it comes to covering the olympics (or any sport for that matter)... every 4 years we get another giant nbc tent added to the ever growing circus.  the only enjoyable aspect of their coverage are the mary carillo segments on china ... she's got something(s) costas doesn't have ... class ... a college degree ... an athletic background.

on the nose

Great work and thoughtful comments.

As to the reasons behind NBC's coverage, I think you can find the answer here:

Link

I tried to read what you linked to, but received a "Forbidden" notice, stating that I did not have permission to access it. I went to MM's site and came up with this, which I think is what you're referring to:

Hope that helps anyone else who's interested.

More hyperbolic Cr@p

Check out the track and field inquisitors, I mean commentators. Way over the top. Especially after the men and women dropped the batons and DQ'd in the relays. You would have thought it was the end of the world. Stuff Happens! For Gosh sake.

I really like the internet coverage of  the olympics on nbcolympics.com. For the first time in 3 or 4 olympics I am able to watch weightlifting and cycling without having to stay or get up in the very early am or guess which channel it's going to be on.(although the screen is tiny LOL). Any sport you care to watch is on the site in live video or rewind.

I agree that NBC has made

I agree that NBC has made great use of existing technology.  My wife is an avid equestrian.  She wanted to see every last minute of the equestrian events, but they are just not covering them on TV.  However, on the web site she could see all that she cared to.

I set up the capability to wirelessly transmit web sites to our flat screen in the living room.  It has become the place to be for all her equestrian buddies.  She can rewind at will a jump or a part a dressage test to the ohs and aws of her friends.  I am surprised she hasn't dragged the horses up from the barn to view as well!  I'll probably have to set up the barn for wireless Internet next time around!

jd

Could you do the same for me?

Not one iota of network coverage for the equestrian events.  But ping pong, archery, and softball.  Wow.

David Gregory, do you know which damn network you lie for? ~ Uncle Jimbo, @Blackfive

I think any network that

I think any network that broadcasts the Olympics wants their name to be synonymous with the Olympics, hence "NBC Olympics." It's branding.

Costas is OK, not great, but I don't know who else you would get. All these people tend to be over the top in their assessments. And Costa does have many many years under his belt. As for "exit interviews" with Costas, well, duh. Of course they're going to do that.

I think the track guy has been the worst. Andrea Kremer was superfluous, the track guy has been pointless.

And what's with the attitude these track people have? They're really snotty.

As for China-centric coverage, I think you do interesting coverage of the "home athletes" and their sports. Same would happen elsewhere.

Noel,

"Of course, one must wonder how much more coverage this would get
if Kerri said something bad about the President, or the Iraq War, or
even better -- praised Barack Obama."

If they had said something like this, perhaps NBC would have left it on Youtube? Seems the video is no longer available there due to "third party copyright claim".

I wonder if it would have been a problem if they had bad mouthed the President.

"This
liberal would be all about socialize -- uh, uh, would be about
basically taking over and the government running all of your companies."-Maxine Waters 2008

not exactly restless

NBC is pulling Olympic footage from YouTube as fast as they can find it. They've been doing that for several days now regardless of the athletes involved.

Not that I enjoy defending NBC but IMO it really was a copyright thing.

slightly off topic

When you watch these two women playing on the sand and doing interviews together, they have a lot of chemistry and show total class. Likewise with our swimming team and gymnastics.

We were watching track and field tonight and it was a completely different story. Team USA have no chemistry and all seem to be competing against each other. I was quite disappointed to see Wariner get angry when he had to settle for silver when a fellow American beat him.

Rogers and Dalhausser struggling in men's beach volleyball right now. I really think May and Walsh could beat these men.

FANtastic!

I love President Bush and I love Misty May and Kerri Walsh.

Thank you ladies! You're inspirational and beautiful inside and outside.

RRAM Tough!

Congradulations..

Congrats ladies.....

Bet NBC was seething along with the other minions....

"You're either part of the solution or part of the problem"

SHOCKING...

I am stunned that Keri Walsh's remarks made it to air. I felt like I took a chair to the head when I heard her thank Bush.

What was funnier was the photos of Bush with Misty & Keri before the Olympics. Usually the President has a sort of fake/forced smile. If you look up those photos, he looks a little too happy to be there, if you get my drift.

Here's NBC footage

This link is for the entire match, but you have to have download Silverlight from Microsoft's web site, and you may have to register at NBCOlympics.com to see it:

Then click "Play Video"

Kerri Walsh thanked President Bush at approximately the 48:57 mark--almost at the end.  I might have missed it, but when they rebroadcast the post-match interview later on NBC or one of the cable stations, they MAY have cut the part where they thanked the President.  (I'm not 100% sure, so don't go complaining to NBC about it unless you're complaining about Tingles and Olberass anyway.)

classy

These two wonderful ladies are class acts. I've been watching them for about a year. I was gald to see them give a shout out the the President. I also was pleased that Kerri adressed him as "Mr. President."

Take that, Olbermann.

This warms my cold,

This warms my cold, conservative heart. These girls make me so proud and I'm so glad to hear of their victory.

That more than makes up for...

That more than makes up for the hours and hours of beach volleyball that NBC inflicted upon us. I like to watch a game or two, but that was too much. Surely, there must have been other events worth broadcasting...

I knew there was a reason why I cheered for them

Patriotism lives!  Congratulations on winning the gold and representing our country.  To the dismay of NBC, there are people who support our President.  FANtastic!

I think they will have great

I think they will have great children. Congratulations girls.

Misty and Kerry are two of the nicest, sweetest people you'll ever meet, along with being absolute legends of the game.
