For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: Michael Phelps is now the greatest Olympian of all time!
Is his performance moving you in any way? For those that weren't interested in the Olympics before they started, are Phelps' astounding accomplishments drawing your attention?

Absolutely!
August 13, 2008 - 09:18 ET by MeanderingI really enjoy watching the Olympics and I have been following Michael Phelps' achievements since the Athens Olympics and I agree he is the greatest Olympian of all time. No one has dominated his or her sport like Phelps.
Plus, did you see the amazing relay where he and 3 other guys came from behind (especially Lezak in the achor position) to inch out the favored French? Amazing! The Olympics Rock!

Just Sports?
August 13, 2008 - 10:15 ET by MeanderingYes, it just sports that don't mean all that much on the surface, but its more than just sports. Its countries coming together in competition and good sportsmanship. Yesterday, the women's beach volleyball team for Georgia beat the Russian team and ousted them from the games. After the "game" was all 4 women hugged to show that even though there might be conflict it in this arena where people can simpathize with each other and see each other as equals and not a different nationality, race, religion or even gender.
Yes the Olympics are more than just sports as people of each country rally behind their teams and athletes and gain pride in their nation which might not have happened otherwise.
Yes the Olympics are more than just sports when countries like India gain their first Gold medal ever. Also countries like Togo winning their first country medal ever. These stories are priceless to the people of these nations and all because of sports.
So no, it might not solve the worlds problems, but think of the world without the Olympics and sports for countries to come together as 1 nation, the nation of Earth enjoying sportsmanship and goodwill to all nations. So, is it just sports, or is it something more?

August 13, 2008 - 10:03 ET by MeanderingTrue on the Gold Medal count, but let's include all the medals won by the countries:
Great Britain - 7 medals
France - 11 medals
Netherlands - 5 medals
Switzerland - 4 medals
Brazil - 3 medals
Sweden - 2 medals
Norway - 1 medal
Mexico - 1 medal
Now as far as medals go, you should see how many Great Britain, France, Netherlands, Switzerland, Sweden, and Norway win in the winter Olympics they pretty much dominate those Olympics.
If you look at all time medals won Great Britain have won 677 medals and are 3rd all time, France has 600 and is 5th, Sweden has 469 and is 7th. I could go on, but I think I've made my point.

And as I said the other night, the Ukraine will be the next target on Putin's list.
Aside from the fact that Georgia is toast, should the Russians move on the Ukraine, this will be two U.S. allies who will have been subdued by the Russians within a very short period of time.
By the time the lip-service being paid to all this by the West (and I am including George W. Bush here) is half-way through, it will be too late for our two allies.
The Georgian operation appears to me to have been planned well in advance, and was obviously timed to coincide with the start of the Olympics.

August 13, 2008 - 23:24 ET by R D HelmThe Russian troops and their equipment used in this invasion didn't just get beamed to Earth from outer-space five minutes before their attack was launched. There had to be staging areas where the men and materiel were positioned prior to the step off.

Is our "intelligence" community really this incompetent?
August 13, 2008 - 10:57 ET by bassndudeNot at all. The US has been watching this area and a Russian troop build up for the last few months. There was a feeling that Russia was building up for a well timed invasion of Georgia. Over recent months there was an increase in rebel attacks on small villages and towns in Georgia, sponsered by Russia. All the while Russia was telling Georgia they would stop the incursions. In reality what they did was goad the Georgians into defending their population by moving into the disputed areas in an attempt to confront the rebels. This is exactly what Russia expected and the reason they had built up the "peace keeping" force to 90,000 troops. Georgia has only 37,000 troops. This was a planed offence by Russia, and our intelligence knew it was comming, but there was little we could do. I, for one, am all for sending in the F-117's and the F-22's and slamming the dickens out of Moscow. The conventional Air Force could fly into Georgia and slam the Russians in Georgia. After all, if Russia can say they have ceased operations in Georgia, we can say we "did'ent do it". After all, if they have ceased operations and had pulled back, according to the agreement they signed, we would have no reason to bomb "Georgia".

August 13, 2008 - 11:20 ET by bassndudeUnsane...the Georgians are a US trained military. Our special forces have been there for sometime now, training them. True, a few teams of special forces can make a large difference, but that needs air power, something Georgia lacks. I think there airforce is like 22 combat aircraft. Russia sent some 800 planes. Georgia has about 30 tanks, or less than 50 anyway, Russia sent in more than 300. Georgia has some 37,000 troops, Russia attacked with some 90,000 "peace keepers".
Georgia did the right thing in pulling back and regrouping in the capitol. Defense is easier than attack. Your forces are in position and your enemy must come to you.

First of all
August 13, 2008 - 10:03 ET by DelsaI love the swim events. A swimmer(not a good one) as a kid, and having never mastered Butterfly, a stroke I dearly love, I am in awe of our entire team and most assruidly Michael Phelps.
Butterfly now known as just plain "fly" these days, is one of the most beautiful strokes. In addition, the Butterfly, in my opinion, is the most difficult.
For me, Butterfly is most wonderful to watch because of it's complexity. A swimmer like Michael with all his grace and technique, creates poetry in motion. I love watching the fingers entering the water with the least amount of splash.
Beyond his grace in the water, I admire his work ethic. He is a wonderful young man who demands nothing less than perfection of himself and he works hard everyday to reach his goals.
Michael Phelps and his TEAM mates are inspirations. The relay last night was a TEAM effort, Phelps knows it, and shares the spotlight willingly. His team helped him get that gold.
I am going out of my way to watch the swimming events and for some reason, I am watching this year where I have not in the past.
As a sports fan in general, I am enjoying the Olympics.
The mens gymnastic team is WONDERFUL TOO and so are the women.
By the way, the chinese women's gumnastics team are not all 16 years of age. Just can't be. Even Bella says the Chinese, who provide birth certificates, can't be trusted and there is no way to prove some are under age so the issue has to be let go!

Notice how they disparaged Democracies, which I think was the real purpose of this show.
What they failed to point out were the other "communist ways" of the olympics -- fake opening fireworks, empty seats, half-filled hotels, and removal of the child singer the opening day. Wonder when CBS is going to do a sequel of how wonderful communism is?

I must admit it was amusing to see those guys selling - yes, SELLING! - copies of the Little Red Book at Tiananmen Square. Ironic, no?
Also, we were taken to various shops where these guys and gals were trying to eke out a living in Beijing selling whtever they could find.
BUT, according to Foreign Policy, in order to prepare for the Games, the Communists had all those folks carted off and out of Beijing!!! Will CBS report THAT? Nope. They are much too busy taking everything at face value.

The Olympics are now under way in Beijing. May the people of Beijing get thoroughly sick of hearing The Star Spangled Banner. May the Beijing Olympic Committee run out of U.S. flags for the medal ceremonies! USA! USA!! USA!!!
Sad Story
August 13, 2008 - 10:51 ET by MeanderingThat was what I suspected. Of course CBS didn't report it. This is what Obama whats to do here so they can't report it as bad. They might lose their jobs.
And now, today's
August 13, 2008 - 10:11 ET by Roger the ShrubberAnd now, today's Phelpicized Shrub Report®:
Today's Olympic Update. The Chinese Prepubescents beat the US Tanya Harding's for the team gymnastics gold last night. Is it this Shrubber, or did most of the US girls look like future peroxide-and-acne-faced trailer trash in the making?
Screw the Olympics when you have more important sporting events to watch…
Finally, a scientific explanation for this(uncouth humor and major boobage alert).

Did you know her son died in Iraq? John Kerry served in Vietnam, too.
Did The Hopeful Changer lie (again)? You gotta love political ads (on either side), always so honest…
(Not so shockingly)Liberal cities are the hardest drinkers. Must be to get the taste of bullsh*t out of their mouths…
Speaking of bullsh*t, this judge smelled some in the courtroom.

Ouch! None of the gymnasts
August 13, 2008 - 10:25 ET by balboaOuch! None of the gymnasts strike me as Tonya Harding-esque, especially Liukin.
And hotchickswithdouchebags.com is why I love the Internet.
balboa
August 13, 2008 - 10:30 ET by Cool ArrowI was pretty much unimpressed with all the teams last night.
China was a boring walkover.

Not much drama there,
August 13, 2008 - 10:33 ET by balboaNot much drama there, no.
Every time China wins something, I can't help but think there's some shadowy entity that sends them a telegram stating, "Congratulations. You get to eat food for another year."
Strange
August 13, 2008 - 10:42 ET by MeanderingThat's so strange, I feel the same way. When the girls China gymnastics team won, they showed their coach crying and emotional. I thought that the government now will allow his family to live. Isn't that sad that I thought this?
Yup. "We win! I get heat
August 13, 2008 - 10:44 ET by balboaYup. "We win! I get heat this winter!"
What happens if ...
August 13, 2008 - 10:49 ET by Meanderingthey lose? Does the government ship them off to Nepal?
LAOGAI
August 13, 2008 - 11:15 ET by UnsaneNah. They get an all expenses paid trip to the laogai. See below.
Nepal is sovereign, for now...but is festooned with Maoist insurgents!
The Olympics are now under way in Beijing. May the people of Beijing gt thoroughly sick of hearing The Star Spangled Banner. May the Beijing Olympic Committee run out of U.S. flags for themedal ceremonies! USA! USA!! USA!!!
LAOGAI!!!
August 13, 2008 - 11:05 ET by UnsaneI think of the opposite. What if they LOSE?
I can see a Chinese silver medalist being visited upon by a shadowy Party figure, who utters ONE word: laogai. What is laogai? In Russian, that word is Гулаг (and is actually a Russian acronym that became a word, made known in the West by a very recently departed Soviet/Russian author).
