Sunday Funnies: Hysterical Television Commercial

Photo of Noel Sheppard.

For those unfamiliar, Kaiser Permanente is an HMO based in California with locations mostly in the Western U.S. They've got a very clever ad campaign they call "Thrive," with the following absolutely delightful offering:

That's almost as funny as

That's almost as funny as the E-trade one with the toddler "talking" about making stock purchases and trades online. His cell phone rings, and he says, "Hey, girl, can I hit 'ya back?"

mb

mb,

I like that campaign as well, but this one is more innocent. Know what I mean? ns

Yes I do. It's not a

Yes I do. It's not a little kid with an adult's voice like the other.

This little boy is definitely charming!

Pretty good, but nothing beats

The "he was injured..." classic from Blue Cross & Blue Shield (warning: a little kid says the word "penis" in the video).

The tax & spend drug war looks racist in the real world.

sarc

J,

Was that really a TV commercial? What's Trigon? Is that BC in Florida? ns

I've heard it was

But I didn't ever see it on TV, myself. The kid is really cute, and he's obviously a natural storyteller.

Is Noel Sheppard angry?

Noel,

As someone who apparently resides west of the great divide, are you upset by the time delayed coverage of the Olympics on NBC?

(One of the greatest moments of the Olympics so far -- it was a heartwarming moment that brought tears to my eyes -- was when that Korean bicycle chick ran into the crowd of bicyclers and a whole mess of them went down.  WHAM!  I could only wish that such stuff would happen with all those Spandex Warriors out on our country roads!)

DL

DL,

Not really. What I've got to do is stay away from websites that will give results. So, I avoid Drudge and Google news. Not a big deal. ns

But it is your job to monitor the news for me!

How will I be informed?

A hater of bikers?

Seems you hate the bicycling public...

I did see that scene, not to mention the miserable weather the bikers had to endure.  I throw a fit when having to bike into the wind...I would be in the midst of a tantrum under those conditions!!!

The Olympics are now under way in Beijing.  May the people of Beijing gt thoroughly sick of hearing The Star Spangled Banner.  May the Beijing Olympic Committee run out of U.S. flags for themedal ceremonies!  USA!  USA!!  USA!!!

Oh yeah!

So these city folk come out to the country roads in their beamers and priuses (actually, the Subaru Outback seems to be the big preference of the eco-warrior types) and start honking at some poor guy driving his tractor too slow to another field down the road.  And then these same honkers get out of their trendy cars, put on their spandex and clog the country roads with their "eco-transportation."  And then at our local bar they sit and complain about how there aren't adequate bike lanes and how poor the beer selection is.  Grrrrr....

And I recently had to empathize with urban folk who had to endure yet another "Critical Mass" event where self-righteous Spandex Warriors clog the roads to prove their moral superiority.

Can't we all get along...

Dr Liberty,

People who bike love the open roads and live in the country, too. They are just like you with friends and family. A friend of mine was killed by two men in a pick up truck just because he was riding on "their" road. The passenger hit my friend with a baseball bat as the driver got close enough for his buddy to smack my friend up against his head. His three kids and wife and friends miss him everyday. I understand the anger of fast drivers up against slower vehicles...it's a pain in the arse to let up off the gas for a moment. Why not let everyone enjoy the road?

Noel: Did you just get

Noel:

Did you just get your first TV set ever or does the West Coast lag that seriously behind the MidWest?

This commercial is at least a year old!

;-)

It is an entertaining commercial, though I hate the pretentious "thrive" slogan.

Kaiser's in financial difficulties in Cleveland.  Several years ago they tightened their belts with staff firings.  Currently, they have or will have fired a couple dozen more physicians, though this might be less since a few have been defecting to other groups before the axe falls - never a good thing for patient care.

You don't win silver, you lose gold

One of the BEST Olympic-themed advertising campaigns I have ever seen (I think it was Nike) had this very simple and all too true slogan:

"You don't win silver, you lose gold."

The Olympics are now under way in Beijing.  May the people of Beijing gt thoroughly sick of hearing The Star Spangled Banner.  May the Beijing Olympic Committee run out of U.S. flags for themedal ceremonies!  USA!  USA!!  USA!!!

Strat

Strat,

You know, I typically turn the sound down when watching sporting events and focus on writing. And, if I'm watching something political, the sound goes off as soon as a commercial comes. So, I typically don't pay much attention to commercials.

However, as I'm watching the Oympics more intently than I normally watch TV, I honestly just saw this commercial for the first time, and broke out laughing. When I searched for it at YouTube, I saw that it was an '07 campaign. However, I figured a small percentage of our readers had seen it, and would get as big a kick out of it as I. ns

I'm one of them...I hadn't

I'm one of them...I hadn't seen it, but I'm not a big TV buff.

And yes, I did enjoy it. It's almost impossible not to enjoy a skit with a precocious kid.

I watch too much danged

I watch too much danged TV!

Healthcare in a crises?? Illegal Immigrants taxing the system...And hospitals everywhere are advertising for my business...Give me a break!

This is a great commercial...

and the kid is cute.  But it's been out for close to a year, I think.

Kaiser Kid - at least since 2005

We moved from California to Maryland in 2005 and this commerical was playing back then. Lots of the Kaiser ones with
Allison Janney ("C.J." from West Wing) doing the voice overs were done between 2002 and 2005.

One of their better offerings, and one that could be repackaged and sold to others too.
