WaPo: Stop Blaming Everything on Global Warming!

Photo of Noel Sheppard.

In our ongoing series "What's Happening at the Washington Post," today's "I Can't Believe I Saw This There" moment is a rather lengthy article by Joel Achenbach, conspicuously placed on the cover of Sunday's section B, and conspicuously skeptical about the liberal bogeyman known as global warming.

Maybe more surprising, Achenbach took on media representatives that feel the need to blame every catastrophic weather event on climate change.

In fact, without naming names, he even picked on our friend at Newsweek, Sharon Begley, totally debunking her claim that global warming was responsible for the June floods in Iowa (emphasis added):

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

We're heading into the heart of hurricane season, and any day now, a storm will barrel toward the United States, inspiring all the TV weather reporters to find a beach where they can lash themselves to a palm tree. We can be certain of two things: First, we'll be told that the wind is blowing very hard and the surf is up. Second, some expert will tell us that this storm might be a harbinger of global warming.

Somewhere along the line, global warming became the explanation for everything. Right-thinking people are not supposed to discuss any meteorological or geophysical event -- a hurricane, a wildfire, a heat wave, a drought, a flood, a blizzard, a tornado, a lightning strike, an unfamiliar breeze, a strange tingling on the neck -- without immediately invoking the climate crisis. It causes earthquakes, plagues and backyard gardening disappointments. Weird fungus on your tomato plants? Classic sign of global warming. [...]

Some people are impatient with even a token amount of equivocation. A science writer for Newsweek recently flat-out declared that this year's floods in the Midwest were the result of climate change, and in the process, she derided the wishy-washy climatologists who couldn't quite bring themselves to reach that conclusion (they "trip over themselves to absolve global warming"). [...]

Let's go back to those Iowa floods. Humans surely contributed to the calamity: Farmland in the Midwest has been plumbed with drainage pipes; streams have been straightened; most of the state's wetlands have been engineered out of existence; land set aside for conservation is being put back into corn production to meet the demands of the ethanol boom. This is a landscape that's practically begging to have 500-year floods every decade.

Was climate change a factor in the floods? Maybe. A recent report from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said that heavier downpours are more likely in a warming world. Thomas Karl, a NOAA scientist, says that there has been a measurable increase in water vapor over parts of the United States and more precipitation in the Midwest.

But tree-ring data indicate that the state has gone through a cycle of increasing and decreasing rainfall for hundreds of years. The downpours this year weren't that unusual, according to Harry J. Hillaker Jr., the Iowa state meteorologist. "The intensity has not really been excessive on a short-term scale," he said. "We're not seeing three-inch-an-hour rainfall amounts."

This will be a wet year (as was last year), but Iowa may not set a rainfall record. The wettest year on record was 1993. The second wettest: 1881. The third wettest: 1902.

Iowa is an awkward place to talk about global warming, because the state has actually been a bit cooler in the summer than it was in the first half of the 20th century. Hillaker says the widespread shift to annual plants (corn and soybeans) and away from perennial grasses has altered the climate. The 10 hottest summers in Iowa have been, in order, 1936, 1934, 1901, 1988, 1983, 1931, 1921, 1955, 1933 and 1913. Talk about extreme weather: One day in 1936, Iowa set a state record with a high temperature of 117 degrees. And no one blamed it on global warming.

Yes, folks: this was in Sunday's Washington Post. Read the whole thing.

The Washington Post article

The Washington Post article is somewhat similar to John Tierney’s article in The New York Times at the beginning of the year titled In 2008, a 100 Percent Chance of Alarm.  Tierney writes: “But there’s bound to be some weird weather somewhere, and we will react like the sailors in the Book of Jonah. When a storm hit their ship, they didn’t ascribe it to a seasonal weather pattern. They quickly identified the cause (Jonah’s sinfulness) and agreed to an appropriate policy response (throw Jonah overboard).”

Don't be silly. Everyone knows it was George Bush's fault. :)

Am I the only one who has noticed...

…that before Katrina, the "consensus" in the meteorology community was that hurricanes had little to do with “global warming”.  But then 2005 happened, and Al Gore and his chorus started repeating that increased hurricane activity was because of “global warming”, and all of a sudden the “experts” concurred.  2006 was supposed to be the year of doom that was likely to wipe the “red” states along the southern coasts from the map. Then a strange thing happened, or didn’t happen; Absolutely nothing.

Since 2005, storms making landfall have been few, relatively weak, and far between.  In fact, in much of the south we have a drought, also the fault of “global warming” no doubt.  (We’d actually like a few tropical depressions, actually)

“Experts” using computer models built upon questionable hypothesis with synthesized data claim to tell us with absolute certainty what the weather is going to be like 100 years from now.  And yet, they’ve completely botched the last 3 hurricane seasons.  Not only that, with actual observed data from millions of points, they can’t even tell me with any reasonable degree of certainty what the weather is going to be like 100 hours from now, much less 100 years.

I think much of the problem with the climate “experts” is that within the last 15 years or so, it’s become acceptable to use statistical methodology derived from the social sciences, where so many factors have to be “best guess” to correct the errors of omission inherent in the field.  And we know how well that works.  The only difference is, that the media (almost) actually has the power to create a recession, whereas endlessly repeating doom and gloom about the weather isn’t going to create any more hurricanes.

few hurricanes last year also due to GW

The slow hurricane season last year was also due to GW.

Funny on GMA this morning they were talking about the new "E" named tropical storm and the weatherman said, "...and last year about this time, September 14th, Hurricane Edwardo was approaching Galvaston..." (same time last year? greater than one month difference? Do they even listen to themselves?)

"You should definitely worry about global warming"

The author still believes its happening even though the floods were not caused by it.

Sad Day

This is a sad sad day.  Not because the WaPO actually posted an article sort of, in a way, castigating catastrophic AGW dogma, but because this is the day I learned the toronto maple leafs will win a Stanley Cup.  i.e. hell froze over too.

There are 2 types of politicians.  Those who know AGW is a sham and stupid ones.

"...a strange tingling on

"...a strange tingling on the neck -- without immediately invoking the climate crisis."

Does this mean that Chris Matthews tingling feeling he had shoot up his leg was caused by global warming?

This is actually....

a very disturbing sign. After reading the entire WaPo article a few things stuck out;

"Seems to me that it's inherently impossible to prove a causal
connection between climate and weather -- they're just two different
things. Moreover, the evidence for man-made climate change is solid
enough that it doesn't need to be bolstered by iffy claims. Rigorous
science is the best weapon for persuading the public that this is a
real problem that requires bold action. "Weather alarmism" gives
ammunition to global-warming deniers.
They're happy to fight on that
turf, since they can say that a year with relatively few hurricanes (or
a cold snap when you don't expect it) proves that global warming is a
myth. As science writer John Tierney put it in the New York Times
earlier this year, weather alarmism "leaves climate politics at the
mercy of the weather."

"Some folks may actually get the notion that the planet will be safe if
we all just start driving Priuses. But even if we cured ourselves of
our addiction to fossil fuels and stabilized the planet's climate, we'd
still have an environmental crisis on our hands
. Our fundamental
problem is that -- now it's my chance to sound hysterical -- humans are
a species out of control. We've been hellbent on wrecking our
environment pretty much since the day we figured out how to make fire"

"The basic problem is that there are so many of us now. Four centuries
ago, there were about 500 million people on Earth. Today there are that
many, plus 6 billion. We're rapidly heading toward 9 billion.
Conservatives say that we just need to focus on maintaining free
markets and let everything sort itself out through the miracle of the
invisible hand. But the political tide is turning against unfettered
free markets and toward greater regulation. Climate-change policy is
part of that: Somehow we've got to embed environmental effects into the
cost of energy sources, consumer goods and so on. The market approach
by itself has let us down
." (emphasis mine)

The inclusion of the above material is a subtle, and therefore a surprising and disturbing, manipulation by a "mainstream" manufactured opinion outlet. By calling out some of the zealots of the AGW media movement, Mr. Achenbach insinuates that his propaganda is thereby more reasonable and logical.

Obviously that is not the case. Yet the fact that he was allowed to do so worries me. I regret to say that this may foretell of a shift to a kinder, gentler, yet even more dangerous type of climate change alarmism. One that sacrifices its more extreme members in the hope of appealing to a broader audience. All the while, remaining true to the tenets of socialism and global population reduction.

I hope I'm wrong, for it's a scary proposition if I'm not.

Tax and tax and tax and tax 'em till they drop

Congrats. Someone finally homed in to the very heart of the article. It's not a retreat on AGW tenets but rather outlines the real motives of all governments when trying to fix (yeah, right) an imaginary environmental problem — raise taxes (just don't call them taxes).

What this article is really saying is, "Hey! Don't kill the goose that's laying the golden eggs until we can get all them golden eggs."

Levy fees on utilities for CO2 emissions, levy fees on refineries for their CO2 emissions, levy fees on gasoline consumers for their future CO2 emissions, levy fees on every single living person for all CO2 they exhale {base fees on weight & wealth - may as well work on that imaginary obesity problem}.  Hell, levy fees on everything till the power elite have put those uppity Americans in their place  —  lean-to shanties where the daily meal may consist of raw radishes {cooked radishes for the middle class}.

Excellent Points

I am glad you read what I did in this piece and what you pointed out is the exact reason I am not getting overly excited about this piece.

The Anti 'Man-Made' Global Warming Resource

Appreciate it, PT and Leon

Those points are the piece, the rest is distraction.

You know, I think there are some really intelligent people, misguided to be sure, but intelligent none the less, backin the whole AGW hoax and they know how to adjust their message accordingly.  They worship Frank Luntz and consider Propaganda by Edward Bernays a near Bible. They study relentlessly  techniques to manipulate the public and then apply them as needed. When this is done in the guise of journalism, a profession that is supposed to report the facts, not opinion, there are real and inherrent dangers.

The recent shift from global warming to climate change nomenclature in the manufactured opinion outlets reports is a perfect example of this at work.

I long for the days of letting the facts speak for themselves.

Global? Warming?

70 years ago the world started coming out of the great depression. Since that time, world population, economic growth and man made CO2 emissions have grown exponentially. Yet in that time, the trend line for global temperatures have been flat or cooling for 50 years, while 20 years have seen warming. Even in those 20 warming years, warming has been limited mainly to the  northern hemispere only. How much longer can this scam continue?

Iowa had floods???

Some good questions.

Food for thought…

Where
are all of the Hollywood celebrities holding telethons asking for help
in restoring Iowa and helping the folks affected by the floods?

Where
is all the media asking the tough questions about why the federal
government hasn't solved the problem? Asking where the FEMA trucks (and
trailers) are?

Why isn't the Federal Government relocating Iowa people to free hotels in Chicago?

When will Spike Lee say that the Federal Government blew up the levees that failed in Des Moines?

Where are Sean Penn and the Dixie Chicks?

Where are all the looters stealing high-end tennis shoes and big screen television
sets?

When will we hear Governor Chet Culver say that he wants to rebuild a 'vanilla' Iowa, because that's the way God wants it?

Where is the hysterical 24/7 media coverage, complete with reports of cannibalism?

Where are the people declaring that George Bush hates white, rural people?

How come after 2 weeks, you have not heard about the Iowa flooding again?

"All generalizations are false, including this one.” Mark Twain

It's probably because...

AGW

Al Gore et al are either monsters or liars. Monsters if they continue to live like they live when they have solid evidence that the world is coming to an end or liars if they don't believe in AGW with every fiber of their beings.

My money is on the latter.

Not As Good a Put Down as it appears!

This just laments the fact that blaming everything on Global Warming trns people off to the FACT of human Caused Climate Change!

That's an even bigger hoax than Gloabl Warming ever was!

Sinc eit's being disproved that the Globe has actually warmed over the last two yeras, they had to move on to another issue. So Climate Change ( heating and cooling ) was inveneted! So now they can wage war on our economy from both sides of the equation.

Heating or cooling caused by Man and we must stop it by getting off OIL!

We are so screwed!

Days are getting shorter, sunlight dimmer, an early frost this

year? "backyard gardening disappointments."

Yea that would be freezing ...Now that's a climate crisis..

The water temperature in the gulf is cooler, thats why this storm is not a # 5 hurricane.. This is the time of year that hurricanes are the most violent.

More Al Gore truths...

Noel,

You and some others may be aware of this, but I had never heard this about Gore so I thought I would copy here for all to enjoy...

"Before we get too carried away with this depiction of Gore as an eco-extremist, perhaps someone should check in with the people of East Liverpool, Ohio. Back in 1992 when Gore first campaigned for vice president, they heard him promise to block a planned toxic waste incinerator that was being built just 400 yards away from an elementary school, in a flood plain in a valley that experiences frequent pollution-trapping air inversions. "The very idea," said candidate Gore at the time, was "just unbelievable to me."

"Once in office, however, he quickly reversed himself-- not surprisingly, since Little Rock investment banker Jackson Stephens, the Clinton-Gore campaign's biggest financial backer, was involved in financing the incinerator. Today the incinerator is chugging away, pumping tons of toxins into the air each year including dioxins, acid gases like hydrogen chloride, and heavy metals including mercury, lead and chromium."

And this is the guy who's gonna save the world?

The  WaPo article by  Achenbach obviously believes in CO2 caused global warming but it trying to neuter it to make his beliefs more appealing to the general public - very bad.

Climate Alarmists=Elitists...

Here's a supporter of elitist alarmism and proud of it...

"If affect is trumping the reason of the maddening crowd, perhaps the answer lies in enlisting the power of those who simply reason more. At the risk of being elitist, can we assume that those who employ their reason more greatly are those with higher education, the institutional drivers of the society? Are those people also those who are (from a power point of view) in the best position to impact policy?

Clearly policy makers need motivation. Doesn’t it make sense to shift the decision making model away from bottom (horde) up, to top (movers and shakers) down?

So sell the movers and shakers (think of as broad based group) and let them sell the politicians. The rest of the people will follow because they are already convinced that GW is a serious matter. "
