GOP House Revolt Over Oil Drilling Gets Ignored or Buried

On Friday, NewsBusters wondered how much attention media would pay to the Republican revolt that occurred after Speaker Pelosi adjourned the House for a five week vacation without allowing a vote on offshore oil drilling.

It turns out that if you rely on the evening news programs of the three broadcast networks, you didn't hear about this extraordinary event at all (photo courtesy AP).

And, if you're one of the few people that still reads newspapers, the one thrown on your driveway Saturday morning likely also ignored this story, or buried it well off the front page.

Conceivably the worst of the network offenders was the "NBC Nightly News" which actually addressed the fact that Congress adjourned without a vote on drilling, but completely ignored the GOP revolt that ensued afterwards (from closed captioning):

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

REHEMA ELLIS, NBC CORRESPONDENT Congress has left town for the August recess, but they did not go quietly as you're about to see. Democrats and Republicans couldn't agree on any approach to try to help lower gas prices, tempers boiled over today after each side blocked the other's attempts to vote.

UNKNOWN: I ask for a recorded vote.

ELLIS: At the end of the day, no energy legislation which will probably be a tough sell to the voters back home and now they're off for a month.

If you were going to bring this up, why not report the drama that played out on the floor of the House for several hours after Pelosi banged her gavel? Why not let Americans know that Republicans stayed behind, sometimes in the dark, to try to discuss this issue further?

I guess the good folks at NBC felt they didn't have time for that, as they needed to do a rather lengthy section about how people better start making their Thanksgiving and Christmas vacation plans now -- on the first day of August! -- if they want to get the best flights and the cheapest fares.

ABC's "World News with Charles Gibson" ran a close second for most disgraceful when George Stephanopoulos was brought on to discuss presumptive Democrat presidential nominee Barack Obama's flip-flop on oil drilling, but didn't bother bringing up what happened in the House (from closed captioning):

GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS, CHIEF WASHINGTON CORRESPONDENT: It was necessary. As David Wright just pointed out, John McCain earlier shifted on this issue. And he was making headway on this issue of energy. The American people right now are on a try anything mood on energy. They want alternative energy. They're open to drilling, as well. And Senator Obama knew he couldn't be seen as standing in the way of anything that might bring down the cost of oil and gas.

Fabulous! So, why not bring up how Pelosi and the Democrats stood in the way of a drilling vote in the House Friday, and how the GOP revolted? As neither Obama nor McCain can do anything about this issue now, isn't what happened on Capitol Hill Friday MORE important?

I guess not. Yet, ABC did find time to inform its viewers about a new super jumbo jet, while also airing two personal interest segments with one about France's first lady and former supermodel Carla Bruni, and another about a sixteen-year-old spending his summer helping Iowa flood victims. I'm sure both were more important to Americans than saving money at the pump!

As for the "CBS Evening News," it also addressed Congress going on vacation, but rather than mention what happened on the House floor today, did a detailed segment about a Pennsylvania Congressman's earmarks as well as one about a bizarre race in Queens, New York. Amazing.

As for newspapers, the New York Times alloted 520 words to this issue Saturday...on page A16. The Washington Post gave it 402 words...on page A3.

The results of a LexisNexis search suggest the Los Angeles Times, the Boston Globe, the Chicago Tribune, and the San Francisco Chronicle all ignored this revolt.

With gas and oil prices on the minds of Americans from coast to coast, how could any press outlet not cover this story?

Clearly that's a rhetorical question.

My thought exactly,

My thought exactly, steve!

I would love to hear their "explanation" of why it's not news. I wonder if anyone will bring this up on the Sunday shows.

Someone said the other day

That President Bush can call them back into some sort of emergency session. Since their leader has just flip flopped on this very issue, IMO that's the proper strategy to get something done at this point. It vastly ups the stakes from just a "revolt" by the minority.

Yes!

If Bush had any brains he'd have responded to the GOP with a show of support. And if McCain had any brains he'd have been down there on the House floor with them. Why should Republicans try to make a difference when their leadership is running around praising Nancy Pelosi as a great speaker?

These are the times when Bush lets us down.

Thanks.

Maybe there's a downside politically for Bush or the Republicans, but I sure as hell don't see it. I wish I could say it's anything resembling likely, but the fact that I've suggested it suggests otherwise, frankly. Oh well. Off to workout and then ruin it again with beer.

Why should Republicans try

If Bush had any brains he'd have responded to the GOP with a show of
support. And if McCain had any brains he'd have been down there on the
House floor with them.

I would have substituted another "b" word for "brains." LOL

Why should Republicans try to make a difference

Ohmigosh, wasn't that the "head exploder" of the week?!

I was in my car and had to turn Rush off when he talked about that!!

You can bet if this were a Republican-led congress, Chuck Schumer would have left maimed bodies in his wake, in his rush to get to a microphone!

What the Big H is wrong with Republicans? They deserve to have their lunch eaten!!

I was specifically talking about McCain there. Even in the campaign season when he's trying to woo voters he can't be bothered to support the GOP on an obvious thing like this.

After he wins your "anyone but Obama" vote he'll ignore conservie uprises even more, which will drive the GOP into being more timid than ever.

That's my fault...I didn't read far enough above to see your post.

Gotcha' and agree totally.

Btw...as an aside...I am really disappointed in Fox regarding all of this issue about the congress members that stayed to fight and what happened regarding them not being able to have the Special Order speeches for us all to hear and see...

I haven't been much happy with Fox for years the way they have changed, but this has been horrible non-coverage of this issue by them from what I have seen so far, granted, I haven't watched television every minute...but what I have seen it has been disgraceful.

the good news

I've been sharing NB with my family more and more lately. They kept getting shocked when I knew all the details about a story they'd barely heard, so I've started emailing them important articles from here.

More people are starting to realize they can't depend on the dinosaur media to stay informed.

I just hope the government never starts "regulating" the internet to keep the blogosphere in check.

I was and still am

I was and still am infuriated by the non-coverage of this all...I knew by late afternoon early evening how this was going to be covered....I posted some of the coverage on the other thread yesterday as it was being reported along with other posters.

It wasn't going to be...and the little that there was off it, they omitted, or spun the story...making in fun of the repubs ect...

What was even more maddening and disappointing for me though was C-SPAN...this is a number one issue, this affected C-SPAN to a point....and not a topic this morning...not at all...I am so sick of C-SPAN anymore...and they wonder why they have open lines for repubs to call in...many like me don't waste our time anymore...when they announce they have open lines for repubs, you can be sure that the dems will call on it...(granted some repubs get through, but not many)...I am very disappointed they did not have a congressman/woman on this morning talking about all of this...of all places C-SPAN should of.

Btw...I tried to get through....it may be the last time I do too.

I hope Komrade Pelosi and the dems pay for this in Nov., I hope the repubs do not quit what they are doing....makes me sick this isn't given the attention it deserves...intentionally....talk about the msm being arm in arm with the dem party, this proves it.

I beg the conservatives not to be discouraged and keep up the good fight...we need you to do exactly what you are doing....I thank you all.

Gee who thought the media were biased

Maybe if the Democrats had pulled something like this, oh wait, is that you Rep Foley? Wall to wall covergae of a nothing.

Whereas now we have a dictator running the House and blank screens. You wonder why the drive-by media is going broke.

They may be going broke!

I'm sorry, but all I could think of, when I read your comment, that the media is going for broke, in this campaign.  They seem to be pulling out all the stops to support Obama and the Democrats.

Can anyone answer this question? "When the polls say that people's approval of Congress is at 14%, why does that put the Republicans in trouble?"

Democrats: Stuck on Stupid since 2000.

Good question. One thing

Good question.

One thing to note that I think is interesting about Congressional polls. We vote only for our particular Rep or Senator. I haven't looked at polls PER Congressman, but look at it this way:

...I like my Rep for my district and I believe he would poll very high here, amongst people who actually vote for him. His poll numbers are not 14%. And I'm sure very few, if any Congressmen, poll anywhere near that low level amongst people who actually are in their districts/states....i.e, the people who actually can vote for them. I don't like Pelosi at all, but I have zero vote in her election. So even though overall the 14% is a low number, what does it really mean when it's a national number yet each seat is not a nationally elected seat?  It's an interesting thing to think about.

Choose you battles carefully.

Seems to me, a case can be made that Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi are obstructing any progress on drilling.  Knowing that youre representative polls at 50% is one thing, if the case were made that, since your representative is a Democrat, like it or not, if he gets back into Congress he's going to elect Nancy speaker of the House.  She's the one responsible for no drilling. Oil, before Pelosi was less than $2.50 per gallon, and with 2 years of Pelosi it's up well over $1.00 per gallon.  The reason is that she's trying to save the planet. If she is speaker of the house for 2 more years, can you imagine what she can accomplish and how much it will hurt you directly, no matter how good your congressman is?

Democrats: Stuck on Stupid since 2000.

Pbthinker

I will answer that for you.  It is because something like 40% of people polled still think the Republicans are in control.  Don't you love how seriously our citizens take the right to vote?

OUTRAGEOUS

It would be more OUTRAGEOUS if the Republicans don't shout this to every American Before November 4th!!!

The cost of Heating oil this winter will be unbearable!

It's ridiculous that

It's ridiculous that something so important is so cast aside. The MSM will not let America go down a road they don't deem Socialist enough and anything in the way of that is going to get little attention unless they deem that they are completely obligated to give it in order to retain their so-called credibility.

If the energy issue is a "crisis" then it should be top news no matter what "side" is doing what. But the MSM can't bring themselves up to that standard.

Take for instance the global warming topic. If the world's destruction is so soon to come IF we don't change something, then no one in their right mind who believes that could possibly let China and India off the hook, or fly all over the country without a high level of reason for it, or drive a gas guzzling CO2 producing vehicle, run their AC too high, use electricity uncontrollably, etc etc etc. It would make no sense if the world destruction is imminent, without drastic immediate change on personal levels, same as is preached to us on the national level.

This same applies to the energy crisis. It's very real, and in a very short timeframe, dependent on something taking place in the powder keg of the middle east, it could go from really bad to catastrophic. This we know could happen. We didn't learn from the oil embargo of the 1970's, apparently, and the Congressional boobs are ok with going on recess and possibly letting the session end having done nothing. We will all pay for their idiocy, only thru our wallet if we are lucky (nice luck huh?), but through our wallets and our national security and sovereignty if it were to turn in a manner that is very possible.

These people are absolutely toying with you and me, our future of our nation, for the sake of power and pacification of very far Left organizations that have little concern for America other than what they can do to be most powerful in it, and the MSM is part of it and promoting that agenda, to the detriment of all of us including those who are attempting to unknowingly, due to their ignorance, slit their very own throats by wanting that power at the expense of the nation in which they themselves live and are empowered.

Unbelievable !

We the people, there bosses, are being treated like morons by this Congress. We are morons to put up with it. What is it going to take for the people of this country to take our country back. Glenn Beck's pitchfork and torch rebellion is a great idea.  Let's get it on !

McCain, the Party, and BUSH

need to get going regarding the walkout by the Dems on Our Country!

Bush needs to call the SOB's back into session and McCain and the Party need to start commercials reflecting the facts surrounding the lack of energy toward solving our energy needs.

All the above make me sick.

And the media???

If there was an honest media person, they'd report on how the Democrats attempted to lock them out of the Capital.

Oops. I used Honest and media in the same sentance. My oversite.

I must have blacked out?

...and you put them right

...and you put them right next to each other. Shame on you! ;)

"Nuke 'em 'til they... oh hell, just shoot 'em!"

There's a silver lining in all of this.

Ah, you read the subject and say, "What in hell is this guy talking about?"  Anyway, the silver lining is the Republicans must be right on this issue.  If they were truly making fools of themselves the media would be convering it all over the place. The Democrats are in deep trouble on this issue.  Their leadership may not have comprehended just how much, but I bet the press is aware of it.  They know that, if they play up the vast differences on this issue, it has the potential of costing the Democrats both houses and the White House, in November.

You notice that Senator Obama went from his "put air in your tires and get a tune-up" to agreeing that we need "some" off-shore drilling.  We know he'll say anything to get elected, apparently he's not trying to save the planet like Ms. Pelosi.  I wanted McCain to leap on that energy plan of Obamas and offer the American public a deal, do what Obama says and, if you think that's enough, vote for him, if you believe we still need to drill, vote for McCain.  That would have been a good deal!

As an aside, the Palm Beach Post, part of the media wing of the Democratic Party, put this story in a corner on page 2 of the paper. The story, they chose to print, didn't give much indication that anything happened before the house adjourned and they all went home.  It must be nice to be soooooooooooo biased.

Democrats: Stuck on Stupid since 2000.

Hi pb... I just heard

Hi pb...

I just heard finally on Fox this subject come up....

Wendell Goler had on David Drucker from Roll Call...he asked him about congress going home for five weeks, ect...

Drucker said this is a very difficult issue...

Difficult my arse!

Then he said the dems are doing this for Obama, not bringing votes up on our side of the aisle so he doesn't have to vote on the issue...

He said the population is going to keep blaming Bush with his ratings as low as they are...then Goler mentioned that congress is lower with their ratings than Pres. Bush....

Drucker then said something I too mentioned yesterday...most people do not know who controls congress and whose fault it is that we are not getting anything done, that the dems are the ones holding this up...but after Labor Day most people will pay attention and will know by then....

I', paraphrasing here...but you get the drift....

What was not mentioned was ONE Single Word about the repubs that stayed and what happened yesterday...not one word.

The House is the Peoples House...Pelosi shut down freedom of speech with the special order speeches that are usually always allowed after congress is done with their session for the day...

I cannot believe how the msm is reporting or non-reporting this all.

I agree bt....if the Republicans WERE in charge and had done this, you can be sure they would have been camping out on the Capitol steps reporting everything LIVE.....nonstop coverage of the Democrats' outrage a their "irresponsible" behavior.

I am just sick of the whole thing.

Wait until the heating oil season starts. Then the Democrats will collectively whine about how "Big Oil" and the Republicans are at fault.

If Obama gets elected with a majority in Congress, look for a government takeover of the oil industry in 2009.

I'm not kidding.  I wish I were.

"America isn't the problem...America is the solution." ~ Rush Limbaugh

It's funny...

It's funny, when you talk about this issue not being difficult, it is so easy on many fronts.  First of all, on the balance of payments front, this is probably one of the easiest issues where we could ease the balance of payments, and boost the dollar. Secondly, on the security front, we can drill our own oil and not depend on Arabs and Hugo Chavez. Can anyone disagree with the first 2 premises?  The point is, as we drill for oil, we can still search for alternatives.  We still need oil for airplane fuel and petro-chemicals, etc.  It's not like we come up with a great electric car and battery and we don't need oil any more.  If the Democrats would just say, hey, we're going to support building nuclear power plants to get ourselves off of foreign oil, but they don't.

If they keep this up, the Republicans will be in power for 2 more years.  After that, it depends on how they take advantage of the gift.  If they take the Ted Stevens approach, they'll lose bigtime, if they take the Coleman approach, they'll be in office for years and the Democrats will have to completely retool, which will hopefully mean they have to get rid of the Schumers and the Waxmans of their party.

One can only hope!!!!

Democrats: Stuck on Stupid since 2000.

Someone needs to tell that Ted Stevens knucklehead to resign.

If they take the Ted Stevens approach

Sadly, I'm afraid that's just what they'll do.

Someone needs to tell that Ted Stevens knucklehead to resign. Even Elliot Spitzer had the decency to resign.

"They're both doofuses!" --Mark Levin (speaking of Obama and McCain)

Nuclear Power is not going to solve the oil problem

I agree with increased domestic drilling but Nuclear Power has nothing to do with reducing foreign oil usage. It only effects electrical generation but we also have an over 200 year supply of coal for that too. I support Nuclear Power as opposed to worthless Wind and Solar but it has nothing to do with oil:

- Only 1.5% of the United States electrical generation comes from oil (EIA) (48% Coal, 20% Natural Gas, 19% Nuclear)

- The United States has 268 billion tons of coal reserves or about a 240 year supply (National Mining Association)

Keep in mind that we get much of our oil from Canada and Mexico:

- The largest supplier of oil to the United States is Canada (EIA)
- The second largest supplier of oil to the United States is Mexico (EIA)
- 60% of United States oil imports come from non-OPEC countries (EIA)
- Only 16% of United States oil imports come from Middle Eastern countries (EIA)

Thanx for those stats. Hadn't thought to look them up (I new the coal one).

Standard republican strategy is to force the embarassing vote to the democrats on extending the moratorium on drilling (for: loose with enviro voters/against: the loose with the american people), a no win for Pelosi and the "I just want to save the world... is that so Wrong???" crowd)

I will be curious to see when or if this revolt gets picked up... It could be missed and the vote will still be a big problem for Pelosi et all.

Actually, they are stalling, hoping the problem solves itself. Prices are coming down and public opinion will be elsewhere (Presidential debates) come September.

Nailing Exxon to the cross - again

All ills in the world seem to get dumped at Exxon/Mobil's doorstep.

Pelosi's Congress, on the other hand, just took a summer vacation. No liberal bias here.  Right.  Meanwhile, when Exxon's quarterly profit figures came out, everyone's all over that.

Let's get some perspective on the rest of the Exxon story and let's put it in terms average hard-working Americans can understand. After subtracting all the costs of operating their business - you know, all those billions paid in salaries to employees, costs of exploration, maintenance/upkeep costs of oil drilling and drilling rigs/platforms - Exxon's quarterly income was roughly $44 billion.

Here's Exxon's pay stub:

Gross Income - $44 Billion

Tax Witholdings - $32.4 Billion

Net Income - $11.6 Billion

This very roughly translates into a 74% tax rate. Quite a take for Pelosi's gang. So, if a reasonably well off American family with an annual Gross Income of $52,000 paid at this same rate, this would mean, on each week's check of $1,000, they would pay $740 in all varieties of taxes and keep $260; try to make your mortgage payment on that.

Don't speak of Exxon's billions. Translate what's happening to them into terms low and middle income folk understand and relate to. What would happen if all you were left with, after all taxes were paid, is $260/week? How much could you save for a new house (oil drilling platform)?

Well put.  Interesting how tax loving liberals don't seem to mention that $32 billion.

I don't have an issue with "Big Oil." I do have many issues with "Big Congress."

And "Big Media."

And "Big Media."

Let's ask Obama

Next time Obama brings up his windfall profits tax idea, someone should ask him what congress does with the $32.4 billion they already got from "big oil"?

Democrats: Stuck on Stupid since 2000.

That is why they are not voting

Government revenue junkies want higher gas prices: they get more taxes.

Drilling would lower their income.

Government is getting desperate for non-ear marked revenue and the future is grim for people who don't believe in growth/don't want growth.

The pork-barrelers will be fighting each other for revenue in the future without something like skyrocketing fuel prices...

By now it should just be

By now it should just be taken for granted that the press will misrepresent Republican Congressional activities...if it represents them at all.  With that in mind, the RNC should simply make it the Party's business to maximize the impact of such effective gestures by using them (and Reid and Pelosi's unmitigated failure) ad nauseum in Congressional campaign spots to retake Congress.  Taking back Congress is a higher priority than electing McCain...and with Pelosi being the stretched face of the escalation and continuation of high gas prices (not to mention the stretched face of a Democrat-led Congress with a 9% approval rating), it really shouldn't be that hard to clip some of these first-term "blue dog" Pelosi drones and take back the majority.  Unfortunately, the RNC seems too dumb to capitalize.  Sad.

Fitz, you're absolutely right

The current Repub leadership got us in these straits.  They need to be removed just as the leftoids like Pelosi and Reid.  There needs to be a strong conservative movement to take control of this country.  We need statesmen that are patriotic and don't apologize to other countries for what America does.  We don't owe any country anything.  We need leaders who will do what is in OUR best interest.  Any politician who says that we cannot drill our way out this is a complete fool.  Like I can't eat myself out of being hungry.

I'm ready for a second revolution (albeit peaceful) where we, the people, take back our country and kick the pathetic excuses for leaders out as soon as possible.

No third party option

There is no viable third party right now, and no viable third party candidate.  It is either McCain or Obama.

If you frequent this web-site and aren't a troll, then you must know that McCain is a hell of a lot closer to being a conservative (at least 50% conservative) than Obama - who was raised by Marxist wolves in Chicago.

This is the wrong time in history to be playing around with "sitting it out" to teach republicans a lesson.

If Obama is elected he will destroy this country.  He has already hinted at defunding the military and ceding policy to the U.N.

He will likely let Iran go nuclear and betray Israel (he has lots of close links to Palestinian activists).

McCain - or the end of the U.S as we know it.  The only choice.

PT, McCain is clearly an incompetent boob.

His inexplicable support for Cap-and-Trade is only one of his hideous problems, yet this fact alone clearly demonstrates to anyone with a brain that he is wholly unfit for the office he seeks.

yes Dave

We could write an entire list of reasons why McCain is something less than stellar.

candance, actually we could write something much larger...

...than a mere list.

LOL-I was thinking two-volume work here.

I have tried and tried, and tried some more, but I just don't trust the man. He appears has been isolated from reality for so long that he just doesn't "get it" on much of anything.

The pain of this election

If I vote McCain I get cap and trade AKA insane energy bills and gas prices, amnesty for illegals and closing Gitmo vs. Obama socialism and worldwide capitulation - oh the joys of this election.

Sorry, I'm not buying what you are selling.

Will I vote for Obama? Not a chance!

Will I vote for McCain? Not a chance!

Will I write-in the candidate that closely reflects my beliefs? You bet!

Am I afraid of Obama or McCain screwing up the country for 4 years? You bet!

Is there anything I can do about it? Ask me again after the conventions.

FYI... If this helps: I have one dollar bets with 3 fellow NB posters that McCain will win in Nov. Yes, you read that correctly. I honestly think he will win.

sorry parker

Some of us disagree and don't want to talk about that again.

Parker, McCain is about as far from being a conservative...

...as it is possible to be.

Event the extremely liberal George W. Bush is not as far to the left as is John McCain.

RD...

It really irks me when I hear someone say that McCain is a Conservative.

My biggest reason for not voting for him... I don't trust him. But on the flip-side, I distrust Obama even more.

Parker, are we even sure the "U.S as we know it" still exists?

Seriously, I am finding this country less recognizable as each day passes.

Our hideous 35% corporate tax rate is driving companies and jobs from our shores in droves. I might be wrong here, but Exxon-Mobil may be the last American-owned oil company out there.

Anheuser-Busch has been sold to a foreign beverage company, and George W. Bush just added yet another massive entitlement program to the mix by signing that stupid housing bill.

Couple that lunacy with the myriad of entitlement programs that already exist, not to mention the massive un-funded mandates that no one seems to want to talk about, and I'd say we are heading for a financial disaster that is going to make the Great Depression look like an economic boom.

Pelosi saves the planet

Two questions regarding Nancy (the Borg) Pelosi's planet-saving comment:

1.  Which planet?

2.  When will she return there?

Remember when legislative

Remember when legislative Democrats revolted a few years back in the state of Texas over redistricting? This was MAJOR news. Now that Republicans are having a revolt, at the national level no less, the liberal media suddenly feel like it isn't news.

Yes Brian Williams, bias is in the eye of the beholder.

djd... That's

djd...

That's right...plus the msm reported where each member was hiding out and how they got to their destination with GLEE....proud of them ect...it was almost a daily screed with them...and it was illegal by the rules of the Texas House, or however that worked if memory serves me correctly.

We have something major that is effecting all of us border to border, our whole economy...and it is story to be made fun and light of, or not report at all.
