Here's another malady the liberal bogeyman known as global warming is now predicted to cause: an increase in raw sewage being pumped into the ocean.
Honestly, at this point one has to wonder if much like writers for a daily comedy program there aren't teams of folks in offices around the world working 24 hours a day, seven days a week thinking up new bits of hysteria about climate change to scare the public.
With this mind, here's the next bit of nuttiness, this one coming from the Vancouver Sun (emphasis added, photo courtesy USGS):
Public health and safety threats are escalating in Metro Vancouver because an aging sewage handling and treatment system will fail more often as a result of climate change, according to a federal report uncovered by The Vancouver Sun.
The report says heavier rainstorms will frequently overwhelm portions of the region's sewage system and accelerate the spill of raw sewage into Burrard Inlet and the Strait of Georgia.
That means more raw sewage will be dumped into the ocean more often, in apparent violation of the Fisheries Act. [...]
More raw sewage spills also mean more health risks to people using the inlet for recreation - swimming, windsurfing, sailing and fishing.
Environmental groups, including the David Suzuki Foundation, were outraged to hear about the contents of the report. They are calling on regional and civic governments to act now to "avoid potential disasters including extreme impacts on human health caused by system failures."
What a shock that Suzuki would be so quick to jump on this. After all, he is Canada's leading climate alarmist almost as important to that country's global warming hysteria as Nobel Laureate Gore is to America's misinformation campaign.
Any questions?

July 31, 2008 - 10:34 ET by Dan The Man 2The report says heavier rainstorms will frequently overwhelm portions of the region's sewage system and accelerate the spill of raw sewage into Burrard Inlet and the Strait of Georgia Ahh something I know a lot about. In Dallas we have the same problem, an aging system and work constantly upgrading teh systems to accomodate the load.
In a modern day Sanitary Sewage system it is closed, as much as possible, to water runoff from rain and such. In teh past ine older cities the two systems were one and water runoffand sanitary effluent was dumped into one pipe and dumped into teh nearest large water source. Especially popular in cities by the oceans.
But, today we have 2 seperate systems one for wastewater and one for runoff. What it sounds like is those cities just need to get their act together and construct new systems or repair/upgrade the systems they have now.
A fun little tidbit, in most metropolitain water systems the water they drink is most likely recycled sewage. In Dallas teh sewage is treated to where one can drinkl it and suffer no ill effects then dumped back into teh waterways. The Trinity River, running through Fort Worth and Dallas and many other towns is 90% recycled sewage.
Nuke em til they glow then shoot em in the dark.

July 31, 2008 - 11:07 ET by Lancasters Saved UsThe comparison between Suzuki and Gore is very apt. The Sludge Report
July 31, 2008 - 10:42 ET by Dr_LibertyI'm glad global warming is getting the blame for dumping raw sewage; that takes the burden off of my shoulders.
Here's a tip: Next time you plan to dump raw sewage into the ocean, consider par-boiling it with a little parsley on the side. Better yet, get your friends together for a bonfire on the beach and do a sewage BBQ.
Well, isin't Vancouver part
July 31, 2008 - 10:46 ET by bassndudeWell, isin't Vancouver part of the left coast? To blame an aging sewer treatment plant failure on GW is stupid. Aging plants of any kind fail because their systems are old, worn out and its time to build a new one!
I also read where GW is causing more fish to be born male. While water temps do determine some fish sex, the very idea that 98% could be born male is nuts. Besides, of the fish they talk about, these are what I call bait fish. Fish other fish eat, and they never get very big. Fish you buy for minnows. These fish normaly spawn twice a year. Early spring, and late fall. And fish spawn within certain water temps. These people talk like the fish will spawn on May 1st, no matter what the water temps are. Just not very well thought out, or very stupid.

Yeah, bass, The old system
July 31, 2008 - 11:20 ET by MassConservYeah, bass,
The old system that was not designed to handle the current volume is failing and it's global warming's fault. Gotta love that logic.
As for the piece you read concerning fish gender, I worked up a quick theory as to how they figured out the percentage... They looked at two fish, ignored the female sample, sampled the male and then adjusted the value for an undertmined margin of error.
But, I'm not a statistician so I might be wrong about that.
Vancouver Sewage
July 31, 2008 - 11:10 ET by Mike From CanmoreAlas, this is what I have to put up with everyday. A pure pitch for more funding and job creation. From a left wing basket case point of view, Vancouver is the San Fran of the North. The bud they smoke here is much stronger though.
More of what I have to put up with. Vancouver needs to plan for a post-oil world -- now No, following the pre-cautionary principle will cost nothing. And she is supposed to be a conservative commentator?!?!?! She's an idiot. Of course, we aren't alone in the world. Some scientists in Spain need funding too.
From Drudge, male fish to dominate. No shortage of lunacy in the world.
Excuse me. I have to go to work or else I can’t afford my taxes. It’s what I do.

Wow! Canada really needs to modernize.
July 31, 2008 - 11:27 ET by c5thenI hadn't realized how far behind they were until this article...
In almost all the modern cities and towns in the US and Western Europe, the sewage system and the storm water system are completely seperate and do not connect. Apparently in Vancouver, and therefore probably all over Canada, the sewage and storm water systems are the exact same systems.
You know, I think even Mexico has had these two systems seperated for a while now.

July 31, 2008 - 11:32 ET by ontheright...let me get this straight, it's AGW that "might" cause this eminent sewer system "failure" and cannot, by any stretch of the imagination be the results of poor civil engineering and/or inadequate maintenance efforts over the years...It couldn't be that the opressive Canadian Govt has consistently neglected this vital part of the country's/city's infrastructure, could it??
For some strange reason, the New Orleans levees come to mind for me.

July 31, 2008 - 11:58 ET by mandrakeNoel, there could be some truth to this. I was driving along a lakeshore road in Toronto this morning and there was a mound of what appeared to be soap suds bubbling out of a sewer drain..really, I'm not making this up. I've never seen that before.

We have split lines
July 31, 2008 - 13:59 ET by TjexciteMost areas have the split lines. What they did for a time where I live is to have a sump pumb system that take all the rain from the eves and send it down the drain. They stopped that to save money on purify was was rain water. The street drains are separate. Now they have two pipes one for the grey water and one for rain water. We had a new subdivision of the city and the city crew hooked up the pipes wrong under the street and did not fined out until the houses was done and occupied and sewage fell into the river. They had to rip up the road to find where it was crossed.

July 31, 2008 - 17:53 ET by Chris NormanNah, it's far easier to get the NYC chic-sters to "go green" instead of a bunch of tough crab fishermen in Alaska. "Green" is so, well, chic. Easy, too. All you have to do is wear natural renewable fabrics dyed organically. I'd guess it's a heck of a lot harder to fish "green" - besides, who'd want to be the one to ask those guys to do it?

The Goracle told me that Global Warming will cause droughts. Now you're telling me we'll have deluges. I'm getting mental whiplash from you clowns. Make up your mind. Which is it?
BTW... we went through a variation of this sillyness here in the St Paul Area. We were told to stop bathing and flushing our toilets because we were overwhelming the sewage system. Lo and behold, they hadn't seperated the lines. Now they have. Amazing, no more overflowage. Go figure. Jerks.
Global Warming causes MEGA FREEZE!
July 31, 2008 - 22:37 ET by Clear thinkerOk folks, I watched the hour long program called "Mega Freeze" tonight. As it turns out, the program was shown on the History International channel. I honestly cannot explain why it was advertised for a different channel. Anyway, I thought I would report back as to what the program contained.
Two thirds of the program dealt with climate from a historical perspective. For instance... Climate change led to our Revolutinary War, the French Revolution, the Black Plague during the 14th century, and Cannibalism. The other third was left to scientists predicting what our climate future will look like. Here's what I got...
The word "could" used 29 times.
The term "may cause" used 10 times.
The term "some scientists say" used 9 times.
The word "potentially" used 3 times.
The word "speculate" used 3 times.
And their final analysis was... Climate change will cause a worldwide Mega Freeze which in turn will cause ENDLESS WARS!
Geeez, I got a headache!

I subject myself to reading
July 31, 2008 - 22:59 ET by contraryI subject myself to reading the Metro section of the Oregonian. The staff in charge of the Op-eds clearly favor a certain point of view when it comes to AGW. They had a local geologist named Gerry Connard write a rebuttal to a piece by some guy named Reichart who was skeptical about AGW.
Needless to say, Connard's arguments boiled down to attacking Reichert's views of AGW by attacking the credentials of the people he quoted, then said Reichert's political agenda unduly influenced his thinking. Oh the irony of this guy Connard.
As a former geologist, I feel embarrassed.
