For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: Obama tells Dems Israel is about to attack Iran?
Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, met with House Democrats yesterday, talking about his trip abroad and his observations. Obama told the caucus, according to an attendee, "Nobody said this to me directly but I get the feeling from my talks that if the sanctions don’t work Israel is going to strike Iran."
Is this an appropriate thing for Obama to tell House Democrats? Thoughts?

July 30, 2008 - 11:34 ET by bradbenj5952The point you're missing is that Obama making this statement is like him going into a session of Congressional Dems to let them know the sky is blue. Israel is perhaps the only country left in the world that has the chutzpa to apply real solutions to real problems. They will be doing the rest of us a favor. How should we respond? Help them in any way we can.

Playing chicken
July 30, 2008 - 11:14 ET by KC MulvilleThe only way to play chicken is to present a credible threat. If you say you're going to retaliate, you have to retaliate exactly as you say you will. In chicken, the trick is to be the first to issue the threat. The opponent has to believe that you're willing to carry out your threat. Israel's attitude is that if Iran goes nuclear, they're going to attack Israel anyway. Whether they send the missiles now or later, therefore, is irrelevant. That's a credible threat.
If we were playing a different game, Obama's popping off to his colleagues might be terribly inappropriate. But this is chicken, and whether he intended it or not, Obama's statement reinforces the credibility of Israel's threat. I'm skeptical that Obama did this intentionally, or realized the effect it would have. But from a strategic standpoint, I'm glad he said it.

True but ...
July 30, 2008 - 12:17 ET by KC MulvilleFrankly, if I wanted to send a message to Iran, this would be the perfect message. Think of the strategic implications of what Obama said:
Part of the fun in playing chicken is not only trying to guess what your opponent will do, but also how everyone around you will play their hands. Everyone believes that Israel will strike, true, but here we're sending a message how the US will respond. No sanctions. No pre-launch warnings. We're not even going to pretend. If Iran keeps going, we're not going to stop Israel from attacking. But at the same time, the game is Iran's to control. If they stop, there will be peace.
Do I think Obama perceived those implications, and spoke carefully to produce that result? No. I think he was just popping off, trying to sound as if he knew what he was talking about. But the result worked out.
yeah KC
July 30, 2008 - 11:25 ET by candanceI do find it interesting that within the same week Brian Williams is interviewing Ahmadenijad on prime time TV and Obama is in the Senate saying Iran is about to get hit.
You're right. It only makes Israel look all the more serious that Obama could feel it in the air. Obama's not a Reagan or a Bush, someone who believes in swift confrontation. For him to say that means it's pretty serious.

July 30, 2008 - 11:22 ET by bradbenj5952What is most concerning is that with Obama's "vast international diplomatic experience", he's just now figuring this out!
My first thought was, "and this is news, how?" I can see the other Dems suddenly turning frantic: "We didn't know this, we must do something! Quick, someone call another session of Congress so we can pass yet another useless law or resolution or something to deal with this new situation!"

We all understand the situation as well, but if we stood in Jerusalem it would probably affect us more deeply ourselves.

A kids' summer reading program in Racine is getting bumped Thursday for a visit by a presidential candidate.
The Racine Public Library was planning to host the finale of its Summer Reading Challenge, featuring "Miss Spider's Tea Party." Then Republican John McCain scheduled a town hall meeting at the Racine Civic Centre around the same time.
Apparently, that's a lot of activity to squeeze into a few blocks, so the summer reading event had to go.
Don't worry faithful readers. Ms. Spider has been rescheduled for Friday at 1:30 p.m.

If legalized and controlled by the Government, or even privatized, who sets the limits on potency?

Well, I'll just blurt out the answer: The FDA will set the limits.

Hi Free...

Sorry you had to hold your hand up for so long, as I was waiting to see if you-know-who would answer.
I imagine it would be FDA that sets the potency limit, but that in itself creates another problem. Even Pot smokers are always looking for a higher high, so if the FDA sets the potency level fairly low, then it's only a matter of time before pot smokers go back to buying higher quality pot on the streets. Legalizing and enforcing would become a joke.

July 31, 2008 - 22:23 ET by Free StinkerTrue. I don't imagine there is any good way to go about it.
Of course, if Congress thought they could get enough tax revenue I'm not so sure they would care . . .

July 30, 2008 - 23:35 ET by shawn228What I would do is regulate it, just like I would alcohol. I would enforce driving under the influence of marijuana just like a DUI. The goverment would grow it in their approved fields and hemp is also a good source to make clothes and a easily grown biofuel
You can only do it in the privacy of your own home or in a special red light district where prostitution would legal as well.
I would heavily tax both and it would toward rehabiitation instead of prison and any access will go toward paying our national debt.

July 31, 2008 - 00:11 ET by BlazerYea, thats great Shawn. The government's done a wonderful job regulating alcohol. Although I am against legalizing marijuana I am most explicity against having to compete with an extra bunch of stoners at Wendy's and Taco bell at one o' clock in the morning.
Dude, hows Uncle Ham and cheddar,..... I mean Uncle Samwitch........jeez,.....I mean Uncle Sam gonna regulate that. : )

July 31, 2008 - 00:23 ET by shawn228Your a family man, what are you doing at Wendys at 1 in the morning anyway?
Lol, I have told you my political positions in the past. Love conservative ideas for taxes and defending our country, but hate nanny state laws regarding things that don't effect anybody else except for ourselves. marijuana, prostitution, euthanasia. I am not including abortion, because imo there is the argument that the fetus is another person.
Why does the government need to get involved in things that are not their business?
Also, except for a small temptation from a fellow fan at a Oakland Raiders game last yr, my pot days are a while ago and I am happily married. So its not like I want to indulge, I just feel it is wrong to nanny state personal freedoms

fair enough candance
July 31, 2008 - 00:40 ET by shawn228I read the article. I am wanting to legalize marijuana, not crack or cocaine or crystal meth. These drugs do effect people and people could literally die from withdrawal, Sure you can die of lung cancer from smoking it, but you can die from tobacco smoke as well.
Also, I am not advocating getting stoned during work, just like I would not advocate getting wasted at work.
You have good sleep candance :-)
