Remember back in May when media gushed and fawned over a huge crowd in Portland, Oregon -- supposedly gathered to hear the words of Democrat presidential candidate Barack Obama -- but chose not to report the free concert given before his speech?
Well, it has been learned that before the presumptive Democrat nominee spoke to a crowd in Berlin Thursday, two popular German acts -- reggae artist Patrice and rock band Reamonn -- entertained the gathering audience.
Will media report this tonight, or just gush and fawn over the huge crowd again?
While you ponder, here's what was reported by Spiegel Online moments ago (h/t Hot Air and Gateway):
++ Pop Concert for Obama Fans ++
6:33 p.m.: The tens of thousands of Obama fans are being entertained as they await the senator. The reggae musician Patrice kicked things off, followed by the rock band Reamonn.
I'm sure this will be part of ALL media reports concerning this speech...not!

In answer to your question, the media will not report on the concert before Obama's speech. It's just not newsworthy.

July 24, 2008 - 14:02 ET by Cureboy675Actually, this is a great point. I've seen it in action.
When Obama came to my city some months ago. The Civic Auditorium exceeded its capacity of 11,000 people and many more had to be turned away. But the propaganda wasn't fooling me.
I knew it was just because most people were there to see the musical group Bright Eyes, who was performing for 20 minutes before the rally. Once they finished up, I'd say a good 90% of the crowd thinned out. Each of them rushing out like the building was on fire, saying something about, "Lets get out of here before we have to listen to whats-his-face...Barama Something"
I mean, let's face it. Barack Obama doesn't hold a candle to Conor Oberst.
Maybe
July 24, 2008 - 14:25 ET by jquamBut we should definately be directing all members of this site to listen to Conor Oberst's free single hit. "When the President Talks to God"
Brilliant.
Although, let's face it...Bright Eyes is a hometown legend where you live isn't he? What would the music scene have become without him. Saddle Creek is a great label...but Bright Eyes takes the cake.
Think Well.
Wow. Somebody else on
July 24, 2008 - 14:34 ET by Cureboy675Wow. Somebody else on this site has actually heard of Saddle Creek Records? I wouldn't have bet on that in a million years. But for my money Cursive is a much much better band.
But...In a manner of speaking...Who seriously just comes to the show for the opening band? Only the die-hards. This business in Berlin. Are there people who would not have gone to see Barack Obama if these bands weren't playing? Probably. I couldn't definitely say none at all. But I'm willing to bet its less than one percent.
However, if John McCain swings through town and Cursive opens for him. I might be persuaded....

Now read that and similar articles from other sources and ask yourselves how many musicians it would take to guarantee a big enthusiastic crowd for Obama's Berlin speech. The musicians are definitely not the story. Obama is.
As for his crowd in Portland (where I happened to live), I seriously doubt that many of the people in attendance had even heard of the musicians who opened for him. Portland just happens to be enthusiastic for Obama. As someone who frequently walks through Portland neighborhoods ranging from working class to well off, I can testify that I have seen many Obama lawn signs and not a single one for McCain.

Part of the reason you don't see many McCain (Republican) signs is the fact that conservatives realize that so called 'liberals' are very intolerant of differing views and they are well know for vandalizing the property of anyone with signs visible. I would never put a Republican sign on my lawn or car for that reason.

I concur
July 24, 2008 - 16:18 ET by blogonatorThe opening acts in Berlin are not any significant part of the story. Without Obama, there is nothing to report from Berlin today. It would surprise me to learn even a small fraction of the people attending the event were there for the music.
Much as it may irritate people who don't like him, Obama is wildly popular in some places. He doesn't need help to draw a crowd.

What will be interesting is to see how the speech itself is covered. It will be hard to spin, but I'm sure the msm will try. The fact is it was a horrible speech, totally unmemorable.

July 24, 2008 - 14:20 ET by Darth DutchI just checked Drudge and they are quoting part of Obama's speech as the following:
'I come to Berlin as so many of my countrymen have come before. Tonight, I speak to you not as a candidate for President, but as a citizen -- a proud citizen of the United States, and a fellow citizen of the world.'
This whole "citizen of the world" thing really bugs me. I have heard Catherine Zeta Jones say that in reference to how she is raising her kids (as opposed to being good American citizens). You cannot be a citizen of the world. You can only be a citizen of a country. Webster's online dictionary gives the following definitions for the word "citizen": inhabitant of a city or town; a member of a state; one entitled to rights or privileges.
If Obama and other airhead celebrities want to make a point of how enlightened they are, that's fine, but they should at least say they would like to be good human beings instead of "citizens of the world." Last I checked there was not "World Citizen Office" where I could line up to receive my citizenship.

Who's This With The What Now?
July 24, 2008 - 16:25 ET by SquonkamaticNope, haven't heard ANY of this before, good work Noel and company. So the Germans get a reggea band to smoke the spliff with, then a metal act to chug a few steins of St. Pauli Girl to ... Heck, I'd be cheering every 68 seconds also after an afternoon like that. And as usual I take great pride in pointing out that the vast, overwhelming majority of Americans don't care what the Germans think about anything ... except maybe that guy who ripped the head off the Hitler statue. He seemed kind of cool.
Rumors
July 24, 2008 - 16:46 ET by the53rdcalypsoThere were a lot of rumors floating around about the whole
affair:
http://www.236.com/n...
Luckily Obama was unable to melt anyone's face with the sheer
power of his blindingly white teeth.
To answer the question...
July 24, 2008 - 16:48 ET by ImAllRightNo, the media will not report it.
Why?
Most likely because nobody left after the "concert" which was performed by two acts that were themselves probably there to support Obama in the first place.
Sorry, but concert or not it doesn't make a difference to many either way. Not Obama and his side's fault that our guy has no idea how to campaign or for that matter seem alive and about his wits. Our fool's idea of a funny retort was to go to a German resturant. Give me a break from this joke.
I see no other option but to sit this election out, which I would never have thought I would have to do.
Nein!
July 24, 2008 - 17:46 ET by GlubberBut at least McCain is not running for Der Fuhrer. Obama is....
Doesn't matter. Obama is STILL not going to win. There is something called the 'Bradley Affect' that is not being reported and skewing the polls.
Add the fact that people are now going to be REALLY ticked off that europeans are telling us how to vote....
Uhhh no...
July 25, 2008 - 02:44 ET by ImAllRightLook, I'm as likely to vote for Obama as you are but you are waaay out of touch with what is going on in America if you think today's speech will drive people away from voting for this guy.
I get a chance to be around many different people each day being in real estate and I can say that NOBODY wants to or will vote for McCain and to a lesser degree, Obama. I don't buy these polls anyway, and I think that the margin is much more in favor of Obama than these polls say. Are they taking into account young voters just registered? Poor neighboorhoods? Those on fixed incomes? Newly sworn in citizens? Doubtful.
No person with a brain would honestly think that your last sentence is from any place other than personal bias. It just sounds foolish actually.
In the America that I live in, people are pissed and this "change" line alone is all that they need to hear and the fact that the citizens of European countries will restore favor in us as a nation with this guy in office is a major selling point for Obama.
I will admit that I am getting to better understand why so many people are willing to vote for a man of practically NO expierience but as I posted earlier, at this point I'll just be watching as an observer hoping for the best.

Idea for Republicans
July 25, 2008 - 08:07 ET by sarcasmoSince you seem to think music draws these big crowds, I have an obvious suggestion: "Free concerts before McCain speeches." If Noel's theory in this post & others holds true, they'll draw huge crowds who otherwise wouldn't have come out to see just the candidate...

If McCain tried
July 25, 2008 - 09:23 ET by MrDebaterto have free concerts before his speeches, the MSM would be all over him, slamming him for using such a cheap tactic to draw crowds. Only the Obama can get away with that little trick, cuz the media will cover for him.
I don't think he's ever tried it.
July 25, 2008 - 09:39 ET by sarcasmoAnd in truth, I don't think my suggestion is likely to work, absent a major name rocker who'd actually be willing to play for free/cheap (and the only name coming to mind at the moment is Ted Nugent). IMO Obama's crowds reflect more than just convenient free music leftovers. Republicans had better be willing to use music and whatever else they can use, because right now they're in very deep odds doo-doo.
