On Wednesday, presumptive Democrat presidential candidate Barack Obama blamed his wife's high negative ratings on "the conservative press—Fox News and the National Review" as well as "rants by Sean Hannity."
He also said, "And you know, the problem is that rarely do these folks have the guts to say it to your face."
On Thursday, Hannity struck back (video embedded right):
Senator Obama, here is my invitation. Anything I've ever said about you, you can sit right here, and I will say it to your face. Do you have the guts to come on this program and take some tough questions?
As you might imagine, Sean said a lot more on Thursday's "Hannity & Colmes," but before we get there, here's the quote from Glamour's Glamocracy blog which set this whole thing off (emphasis added):
GLAMOUR: An AP poll shows that while the positive ratings on Michelle are higher than those of Cindy McCain, her negative ratings are higher as well. I'm curious about how as a husband that makes you feel. Does it mystify you? And what do you want to say to those Americans who don't know the woman that you know?
SENATOR OBAMA: It's infuriating, but it's not surprising, because let's face it: What happened was that the conservative press—Fox News and the National Review and columnists of every ilk—went fairly deliberately at her in a pretty systematic way...and treated her as the candidate in a way that you just rarely see the Democrats try to do against Republicans. And I've said this before: I would never have my campaign engage in a concerted effort to make Cindy McCain an issue, and I would not expect the Democratic National Committee or people who were allied with me to do it. Because essentially, spouses are civilians. They didn't sign up for this. They're supporting their spouse. So it took a toll. If you start being subjected to rants by Sean Hannity and the like, day in day out, that'll drive up your negatives...And you know, the problem is that rarely do these folks have the guts to say it to your face.
As you might imagine, this didn't sit well with Hannity:
So let's get this straight, Senator. Your wife campaigns for you, does public speeches, and says things like she's finally proud of her country, and that America is a downright mean country in 2008, and she should be immune from criticism? [...]
[H]e also said in this very same article, you know, that the problem is rarely do these folks ever have the guts to say it to your face. Senator Obama is welcome on this program. I'll give him -- I'll let him co-host my radio show for three hours, he can be here, I'll let him fill in for Alan one night for a full hour...I'll let him have -- I'll even throw in "HANNITY'S AMERICA" for an hour.
Every -- I am not ashamed of anything I've ever said. I think we've asked some very tough questions, but this is the most important job in this world, and it seems to me, and maybe this is unsolicited advice to Senator Obama, and that is, Senator Obama, you know, you singled me out, and I want to give you advice. It seems to me that if you want to be taken seriously, he needs to be -- be acting like a statesman. He needs to be acting presidential. [...]
I want to say this to Senator Obama because you said, Senator, that -- "and you know the problem is, is that rarely do these folks have the guts to say it to your face."
Senator Obama, here is my invitation. Anything I've ever said about you, you can sit right here, and I will say it to your face. Do you have the guts to come on this program and take some tough questions?
Now I know you're bringing your three press secretaries -- Charlie Gibson, Brian Williams, and Katie Couric on your trip to Iraq. They didn't go with John McCain. But if you come on the program, I promise you I'll say it to your face. That a fair deal?
Sounds fair to me, Sean...but don't count on it.

July 20, 2008 - 11:46 ET by Ryan Mc.I believe Obama started this by calling Hanity out individually, by name, did he not? If he doesn't need Hanity, why even give him the attention then? He turned that private family issue..already decided by Florida courts...into a vehicle for his own vain glory. He forced the issue onto the national stage and embarrasssed Republican after Republican and even Bush flew back to DC from somewhere to act on some Terry Schiavo issue. July 19, 2008 - 23:49 ET by R D HelmI have my problems with Sean Hannity as well, but to say the he "initiated the death of the GOP" is stretching things well beyond any semblance of reason.
The rather deep dog-squeeze the GOP now finds itself in has, as its roots, events that began to unfold before Ronald Reagan had even left office, as the "country-club" republicans (and you are clearly one of them) were already working feverishly to undermine the conservative cause.
I do not consider George W. Bush's victories to have been "glorious" in any way.He was simply viewed by most (including me) as the lesser of two evils.
This liberal republican barely managed to eek out a win against two rather weak socialists in both 2000 and 2004.
GWB may be a republican, but he is certainly no conservative, and he has done far more harm to the GOP than an entire train-load of Sean Hannity's ever will.

July 19, 2008 - 22:42 ET by futbolisgreat1Balboa,
So let me get this straight, in your warped world view, Sean Hannity is being a pseudo tough guy. But when Obama accused Sean Hannity, Obama was being tough?!
Only you Balboa, only you.
Sean Hannity doesn't need Obama. However, as someone already pointed out, Obama does need the voters that listen to Sean Hannity. It would do a world of good to Obama to back up his statement, "...they won't say it to my face..."
Obama was the one that called Sean out, Obama is the pseudo tough guy. Now he has an open invitation to speak with Sean Hannity.
I find individuals like you to be so small minded, anyone that votes for Obama is small minded.
So, Obama is going to be tough on the terrorists that want to kill you, Balboa, your friends, your parents, your siblings(if you have any), etc. But he is too much of a coward to go to a show like Hannity and Colmes?
Yeah, I can already see it.
A future that I hope never comes to happen (either an attack or President Obama)....
Obama Senior Staff Memeber: "Mr. Obama, the country has just been attacked by Muslim Terrorists. Countless numbers of people are injured and an unknown number have perished in the attack!!"
President Obama: "WHAT! But I thought this people wanted peace. I told them I would sit with them, hold their hands and sing Cumbaya Allah!!. These Muslim terrorists are racists. This attack is a distraction from the real issues. They know we are all about Change and Hope. A change we can believe in. A Change that is needed. A change that will bring hope. A hope that will bring change. Change is needed to bring hope. Change is all about change! Don't these terrorists know that I am all about CHANGE and HOPE!!"
This is the ridiculous man that you are voting for Balboa. I would hope that you would be smart enough to see through his rhetoric. His fakeness. His inability to speak without telepromopters (which every Liberal hit Bush for). If he is elected, let us talk two years into his Presidency when Congress is controlled by the Republicans. And let us talk 4 years after his first term and how the American people will kick him out of the White House faster than they kicked out Jimmy Carter.
How anyone can fall for Barack Obama's empty rhetoric is beyond him. I lived in 1998 through Hugo Chavez's election. My goodness, how the Obama campaign and Obama himself remind me of Hugo Chavez and his minions.
God help America if this corrupt, naive, immature, lack of experience, liar, flip-flopper, marxists communists is elected to the highest office in the nation.
We paid 8 years of the Clinton administration with 9/11. How will this nation have to pay for an Obama Presidency? There mere thought makes me shiver. I pray that my children do not grow up in a country where Barack Hussein Obama is President.

Yeah sure, Mr. Bush
July 19, 2008 - 22:19 ET by MidAmericaYeah sure, Mr. Bush perpetuates the notion that white people are rythmn impaired but he does have a day job that balances out our knowledge of his capabilities. Mr. Obama, on the other hand is an unknown quantity even to his supporters. (and probably to Mr. Obama himself since he has never been tested) The problem is not that he grooved with Ellen. The problem is that a person with good dance moves is capable of winning some peoples votes. We've turned running for President into a version of American Idol. That makes serious military people with serious responsibilities nervous.

Ahhh...Liberlas, so small
July 19, 2008 - 23:14 ET by futbolisgreat1Ahhh...Liberlas, so small minded. Always trying to quote polls to back up their warped look at the world.
Hey flashking, where you taught how to think in college? did you go to college?
If we go with the typical Liberal mantra of, "well the polls say that President Bush is not popular..." then, America was wrong to go after Hitler since polls in Germany from his election (yes a legal election-imagine that FDR meddled into the affairs of another nations and took out a legally elected individual) until his death and scary enough a bit aftewards, showed that Hitler was very popular and very well liked by Germans. Was Hitler good for Germany and the German people? I hope you know the answer.
I constantly say this to dimwitted Liberals at work, friends, etc. All they can say is, "well, eh....ummm....but polls....well, eh....uh, uh, uh, never mind!" I love throwing this fact. If we go by polls alone, then Hitler was the perfect candidate for Germany, right? Ridiculous Can't Think On Their Own Liberals and their empty rhetoric.
Barack Hussein Obama is an embarrasment and the 18 to 29 years old are poorly educated individuals who applaud Obama when he tells them that he is embarrassed that they do not speak another language besides English.
Only the Obamabots would clap Obama telling them that he is embarrassed by them. HA!
As Bugs Bunny would say, "What a bunch of Morooons!"

I agree fut, but I feel that would apply to McCain as well. I am still trying to decide on the lesser evil

July 20, 2008 - 22:57 ET by R D HelmAs either of them becoming POTUS is going to tank the economy (B.O. with his ill-timed tax increases, not to mention his hideous Cap-and-Trade program, or McClame's very own brewing Cap-and-Trade disaster, coupled with the fact that he just doesn't "get it" in a lot of other areas, either. :-(
As such, I will be voting for Bob Barr in November, as I am rather tired of ordering from an election menu on which the only two choices consist of the "lesser of two evils." It has been that way since 1988.
Enough, as they say, is enough.
What is more, at least I will be able to live with myself knowing that I have, once again, voted my true convictions.
LOL-Besides, I am from Georgia, and I'd like to think the rebel spirit (as it pertains to our ingrained distaste for government tyranny in any form) still exists here.
Sometimes, you just have to take a stand.

July 19, 2008 - 21:53 ET by MidAmericaMy guess is that obama's mind now is a scrambled mush. He has, in mere months, gone from the theoretical to the actual when it comes to running this country. He has not the years of experience to harden his viewpoint into a coherant world view. The recent nervousness of the extreme lefties about some of his shifting positions is real. So for all those disappointed neo-marxists here's a little musical interlude, Paul Simon's "Slip Slidin' Away".

That was a nice interlude for a conservative like me...
The song fits so perfect regarding Obama and some of his worried leftists...you are exactly right...
I loved the pictures too that he picked for the video...the one that said it all was the picture of the black and white sheet of paper that said ...
"Free Ticket" It's not good for anything...it's just Free....
Fits all the leftists mind-sets....

July 19, 2008 - 21:05 ET by amberI watched it and I was disturbed. I was thinking, "Is Bush allowing this?" After all, he is their CEO, their Commander in Cheif and it looks like Obama is taking over before he is elected. Frankly, I do not think he will be our president, at least not for long. I think there are too many people who would asassinate him, he is too dangerous when it comes to our national security. Cartoon spoof my butt, I believe he is a closet muslim or at least sympathetic to terrorists. I believe he is anti-America. I believe he is taking tons of cash from foreigners. I am not even sure if he can legally run for president. We know too much about him and it is all bad. His wife's salary and his senate earmarks for her hospital, suspect. His friends (Rezko, Aires, that "ex" muslim pastor Wright, his white hating wife, the New Black Panthers, Hugo Chavez, Ahmedinejahd, His murdering cousin whohe campaigned for in Africa, does he have any respectable people in his background?)
