For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: Are Lieberman and the Democrats heading for a divorce?
He has zigzagged the country on behalf of McCain, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, and, in recent weeks, amplified his criticism of Senator Barack Obama to a point that has infuriated many of his Democratic colleagues. At least two have asked Lieberman to tone down his rhetoric against Obama, the presumptive Democratic nominee, two colleagues said, and at least three have advised Lieberman against speaking at the Republican convention, a prospect he has said he would entertain.
Is Lieberman destined to become a Republican during the 111th Congress? How might his appearance at the RNC in September impact the elections? Might he actually be McCain's veep, and, if so, how do you see that changing the presidential race if at all?

I have always admired
July 14, 2008 - 10:08 ET by DontFeedTheTrollsI have always admired Lieberman, while not agreeing with his politics. He is a man of honor from my point of view. As far as him and the Democrats, I think many have already 'divorced' him with more to follow. Also, the netroots on the 'progressive' side hate him.
An aside here, as it is possible troops will be starting to leave Iraq before the end of the year, do you think the left will soon start screaming for the troops in Afghanistan to come home?

July 14, 2008 - 10:24 ET by River CityThe Dems may divorce Lieberman but Lieberman cannot become a Republican without putting future election prospects in jeopardy. They voted for him last time because he wasn't the other guy but they saw him as still a Dem who had to sail under another banner temporarily. If he assumes the Republican banner he will lose all the voters who refuse to vote Republican regardless of their positions. Of course we don't know how big that group is, do we?

July 14, 2008 - 13:19 ET by Hero SquadHey Rog, are you following the arrest of a dozen Dems in the Bonus scandal here in Pa. late last week? As you'll see in this story, our local paper mentioned the Democratic House Caucus in the first paragraph, so bully for them!
The staffer that is profiled here, I actually knew quite well. Back in my early days as a reporter he was a local council member for a municipality I covered. He was a personable and very sharp guy... the only elected Democrat in a town that was, like 10-1 Republican, and he was savvy enough to be elected by the council to serve as its president. Those are no small feats.
I had a "Risk" board game party back in the day (I know, "what a wild guy!"), and he accepted my invitation. The game actually came down to him vs. me. Of course, I prevailed.
Hero Squad does not lose to anyone in Risk.
Anyway, just thought you'd be interested. This scandal is going to hurt the Dems in Pa.

Thx for the link, HS. I
July 14, 2008 - 13:54 ET by Roger the ShrubberThx for the link, HS. I posted about this on Friday, but I am always looking for the perspective from other towns across our fine state.
I was watching some radio talk show guy from Philly on PCN last night, and he was admonishing the Philly press for the pathetic coverage. He said the press on the western side of the state has been all over this and doing a much better job than the "big city" papers.
I am sure a part of the reason is that the main politicos getting busted are western PA scumbags. I wait to see how many other politicians get snared. I am sure there will be more indictments, and some of them will be Republicans, unfortunately. This might be even more powerful than the pay-jacking scandal in regards to kicking some of these entrenched bums out of office!
The funniest thing about this whole "Bonusgate" scandal is that one of the things the Democrat politicians were paying their staffers to do was to campaign and smear the Ralph Nadar nutjobs working in PA. They hired homeless bums to walk into Nadar offices and pee and crap on the floor and do other disruptive things. They wanted Nadar gone because they knew he would take votes away from Kerry.
P.S.: Risk rocks!

HS, risk is a simplistic
July 14, 2008 - 17:22 ET by Dan The Man 2HS, risk is a simplistic game of calculated risks. control of teh right countries and calculated use of the cards is key. And then the lucky bastard always wins over a calculated risk. So in essence it boils down to luck of teh draw at first then proper placement of armies in crucial locations, the use of teh cards at the right time (assuming you ahve good ones) and above all the luck of the dice.
Luck of the dice has killed me more often than not. No matter how well placed your armies are and how good cards you have if you cant out roll the smuck then you are done for and if you persist and his luck holds you are toast.

July 14, 2008 - 10:41 ET by cjbreischNo, he won't. Although if the Dems are in the mid-50s, with or with out him, or magically make 60 without him, I expect them to no longer allow him to caucus with them anymore.
Let's not forget, Lieberman is a true blue Democrat. Except on one issue. He will never join the Republican party and we don't want him.
(Yes, I respect him, but that's different from wanting another RINO in the party).
And he won't be the Veep. He's a horrible choice for McCain and both he and McCain know it. Two old non-telegenic white guys.
Also, he doesn't bring anything to the ticket. McCain's not going to get Connecticut no matter who's on the ticket, and it's only 4 EV anyway. McCain needs someone who will appeal to the base and Lieberman ain't him. The only issue he has in common with conservatives is the war and McCain can find hundreds of potential Veeps with that credential and who look a lot better to the base.
Now...there is a way he could dramatically help McCain's chances. And a way he could speak at the RNC (not a done deal btw) and cause an impact.
Lieberman would be a horrible Veep for McCain but a fantastic Secretary of State. I know, candidates rarely mention cabinet choices, but this would be an ideal exception. McCain needs to talk Lieberman into this and announce that Lieberman will be his SoS right before the convention.
This is good for Lieberman too. Let's face it, he's going to be ostracized in the 111th Congress, and he certainly has no chance of being re-elected to the Senate in 2012 (the Democrats won't have to defeat him twice, and the Republicans likely will have someone capable of getting more than 100 votes).
Obama already is in trouble with Jews, and may be the first Democratic Party Presidential Candidate in recent memory to lose the Jewish vote. Lieberman as SoS for McCain would likely seal the deal, without upsetting the Republican base like he would as a Veep.
If McCain can become the "energy independence" candidate, can get a nice solid conservative Veep candidate to stand beside him, and announce Lieberman as an SoS candidate, he wins easily in November.
CJ
July 14, 2008 - 10:51 ET by Noel SheppardCJ,
Actually, I think Lieberman gives McCain a lot. I think he locks in Florida, and a Dem and Pub on the same ticket presents a moderate viewpoint that is extremely appealing to a plurality of Americans.
Remember, as much as we talk about left and right wings, the largest percentage of the nation is somewhere in the middle. Everybody wants to appeal to this middle, and a McCain-Lieberman ticket could do it. JMHO. ns
McCain is fine in FL
July 16, 2008 - 09:04 ET by cjbreischNoel, I guess I disagree with you there. I don't think McCain really needs help in Florida. I've actually taken it off my "battleground states" list for this year.
And I don't think he needs help in the center. He's already there. To run an effective campaign he needs money. To get money he has to appeal to the base. He needs a right-winger to do that.

Obama and Iraq
July 14, 2008 - 11:09 ET by KC MulvilleSenator Barack Obama has an op-ed today in the New York Times about his plans for Iraq. Selective amnesia is the most apt description of it. Obama’s argument is that the only legitimate war was against al-Qaeda and the Taliban. He opposed the Iraq war, he says in the article, because we lost the focus on Afghanistan, we attacked a country that had nothing to do with 9/11, wasn’t an imminent threat, and isn’t the central front against terrorism.
The criticisms reflect a candidate exploiting the poor memory of the American media. Step into the Wayback Machine as we return to the spring of 2002. Even by then, al-Qaeda and the Taliban had been driven out of power. The few remnants had fled into the mountain gorges on the Pakistan border. At the time, there was nothing to focus on in Afghanistan, and invading a nuclear-equipped Pakistan was (and remains) out of the question. If you thought the Iraq war was costly, imagine the cost in lives and regional disruption that a Pakistan invasion would have been.
Obama is trying to pull a fast one. The Taliban has rebuilt itself, not because we didn’t have enough men to kill it off, but because we calculated (probably correctly) that the political and military cost didn’t justify it. To invade Pakistan in 2002 would have been disastrous. Our reluctance allowed the Taliban to reconstitute, but even if we had a hundred divisions, it would have been idiotic to invade Pakistan. We were reluctant for good reasons. Now, al-Qaeda and the Taliban are trying to break out of the box we’ve put them in. We do need more troops to prevent that offensive, but Senator Obama is trying to obscure that distinction. He wants voters to equate our desire for more defensive troops now with the idea that we didn’t have enough troops earlier. It’s not the same thing.
And as for Iraq, more faulty memory. The Senator has simply forgotten about Saddam Hussein, whom he never mentions once. At the time, Saddam was a very rich and very hostile enemy. We had every reason to believe that he had weapons of mass destruction, and that he was perfectly willing to use them. After 9/11, we now had the additional worry of Saddam using terrorists as his proxies. Because of Iraq’s strategic importance, we couldn’t afford to simply get rid of Saddam without rebuilding Iraq. The rebuilding of Iraq was the price of removing Saddam.
Obama skips over all this. In Obama’s myth, George Bush stupidly stopped in the middle of fighting the Taliban, and chose to step into a civil war and occupy Iraq. Obama wants you to think that this mess just appeared out of nowhere, and all we have to do is leave.
The glaring problem with Obama’s plan for Iraq is that Obama doesn’t understand why we were there in the first place.
KC
July 14, 2008 - 13:29 ET by ricklailI don't understand the man. He wants us to win in Afganistan but withdrawl from Iraq. What is wrong with winning in both places. I keep hearing we don't have the boots to put on the ground to go ahead and polish off Afganistan.
I see two different types of combat. Large units like platoons/companies work well in Iraq. Small units like squads or special ops do better in the mountainous terrain of Afganistan. Most Americans have no concept of combat and how to conduct it. I am sure Obama is one of those.
Be kind to your kids. They'll be choosing your nursing home.
Listening to the military
July 14, 2008 - 14:01 ET by KC MulvilleYeah, but let me be clear. I'm not a military expert. I'm just going by what the military commanders themselves have said, and it strikes me that if I can grasp what they say, shouldn't Obama be able to grasp it?
Obama's policy is like Bill Cosby's story of being the running back in his first football game. Every time they gave him the ball, the players on the other team would smother and pound him into the ground. Cosby wondered why they were so angry at him? Eventually realized that it wasn't personal, they just wanted the ball. So ... he gave it to them. That made them happy. Obama's theory is that the enemy will stop shooting at us if we just leave. That will make them happy. Just give up the ball.
Of course, Cosby's is just a comedy routine. It's not a foreign policy. Or shouldn't be, anyway.
Why do Repubs give Lieberman such a pass?
July 14, 2008 - 11:39 ET by jefflebowskiHe is a DEMOCRAT. His votes over his career are among the most liberal. He drank the lib kool-aid when running for VP. People, this guy is a liberal POLITICIAN! He will do or say whatever is needed to get the vote.

July 14, 2008 - 14:09 ET by okiehawk44I want a cast-off hugely liberal democrat like I want the wannabe liberal democrat we have running as the Republican nominee for President.
I don't trust either one of them.
Similar Deaths
July 14, 2008 - 14:17 ET by ricklailThe national media was all over the death of L/CPL Maria Lauterbach several months ago. You have heard very little about the disapperance of 2nd LT Holly Winumc from Fort Bragg. According to a story in today's Jacksonville Daily News her body may have been found, burned, in a shallow grave near Snead's Ferry near Camp Lejeune. Lt Winumc's husband is in the Cumberland Co jail, for burning her apartment in Fayettevile. He is a a CPL assigned to the 2nd Marine Division.
Onslow County Sheriff Ed Brown said that the scene looked eerily similar to the Latuerbach scene.
Be kind to your kids. They'll be choosing your nursing home.
Open Thread/Drilling for Oil
July 14, 2008 - 14:22 ET by merlin61I know the comments in this thread are about
Lieberman, but Friday, Sen. King gave out
Nancy Pelosi's phone number so we could
contact her and demand that she put
oil drilling on the floor for a vote. She has
taken all bills reference energy and oil drilling
off the floor, and Sen King suggested we call
her and demand she do her job as Americans
want. The phone number is 202-225-0100.
I tried all weekend to get through, and they
have opened a comment line today and I was
able to state my cause. Lets all call and get
this number out there for the Speaker and
Harry Reid to get these oil bills up for a vote
since the President has withdrawn his
executive ban today, and said we need Congress
to get busy and do something about drilling.
He has done all he can.
He has done all he

It really is amazing that the Peoples' Business actually means the business of Pelosi and her environmental case cronies.
What a pansy coward she is.

July 14, 2008 - 15:01 ET by MassConservI think they should have held a naming competition. Knox is so blasé. As evidenced here, there are much more imaginative names they could have chosen. :-)

Later Converts
July 14, 2008 - 15:46 ET by JDWMy daughter voted for sen Clinton in the primary. My son is a genius yet brainwashed by the education system, and supports Obama. These schools are 'rat traps'. My son will one day earn money and eventually convert. No point in fighting it today.

Dem Governors suck...
July 14, 2008 - 15:30 ET by Clear thinkerI posted this yesterday on a thread that got very little traffic. So today I decided to post it here with the hopes that people will check it out.
WARNING: This may be the most boring yet most instructive lesson in differing ideologies.
I caught a few minutes of a program on c-span yesterday but could not stick around for the whole show. Something flipped a switch in me
