Global Warming Update: Snow Blocks Key Road in Montana Park

Photo of Noel Sheppard.

Due to record snowfalls in Montana this year, Glacier National Park's famous Going-to-the-Sun Road was finally opened to tourists Wednesday -- much later than normal.

With the exception of 1943 when park officials chose to let the white stuff thaw naturally due to the nation being in the middle of World War II, this is the latest opening in the history of this thoroughfare which connects both sides of the park.

As reported by the Missoulian Wednesday (emphasis added, picture courtesy Missoulian via AP and NYT):

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

The entire Going-to-the Sun Road will open Wednesday morning, providing visitors with access to the heights of Glacier National Park.

The opening of the Sun Road has been a particular challenge this year because of a snowy winter, late-spring storms and avalanche activity. [...]

Trails in the Logan Pass area are currently covered by several feet of snow. Visitors are urged to use caution and know their own personal limits when considering travel on snowy terrain. Snowpack in the Logan Pass area is double what is typical for this time of year. This includes the popular Highline Trail, which is under considerable amounts of snow. Crews are working to make the Highline and other trails passable to hikers in the coming weeks.

This is one of the latest openings of the entire Sun Road. The latest opening on record is July 10, 1943, when the snow was allowed to melt out. The earliest Logan Pass opening to motorized traffic occurred on May 16, 1987.

As the New York Times reported on this issue Wednesday, record snowfalls throughout the Rockies this year have thankfully diminished drought conditions (emphasis added):

“Snow in the mountains is money in the bank,” Gov. Brian Schweitzer of Montana said. “The snow will melt and run into the streams through September. It’s good for the fisheries and good for irrigation.”

Mr. Schweitzer cited more good news from the state climatologist, who, he said, has forecast a cooler and wetter July than normal. Still, the governor said, even though things are better, “no matter what the weather is, we’re never more than two weeks from a drought.”

For now, residents feel they have some breathing room. “We got so much moisture in June, it released a pressure valve,” said Lisa Bay, a rancher near Wolf Creek, Mont. “It was a grand sense of relief.”

The situation is similar in Wyoming. Snowpack in the Bighorn Mountains, in the north central part of the state, is 79 percent higher than the 30-year average, and 112 percent above the average in the area drained by the Powder and Tongue Rivers.

“Everything is up from average,” said Leanne Stevenson, manager of natural resources and policy for the Wyoming Department of Agriculture. “A lot of what makes a difference is not how much, but how long it stays cool, and we actually had spring this year.” [...]

In Yellowstone National Park, some backcountry areas are blocked by snow and some rivers are high and muddy. “Our ongoing challenge is backcountry access,” Al Nash, a park spokesman, said. “We have high flowing water, mud and, in shady areas, snow. It just isn’t accessible right now. It could easily be another month before we have access.”

But the snows will help the park recover from a drought that has caused ponds and wetlands to dry up, killed fish, reduced vegetation and even lengthened the period between eruptions of the famous geysers.

“One good year doesn’t overcome a drought,” Mr. Nash said. “But it’s sure welcome and helpful.”

Rivers that in the last eight years usually retreated to their normal levels in May or early June are still running up to their banks. Many people who came to the Northern Rockies to fly fish in June found their favorite rivers the color of chocolate milk. [...]

On the Yellowstone River near Livingston, Mont., record high flows forced local officials to close a bridge that appeared to be collapsing because of high waters, stranding 24 people on an island for a few days until a temporary one was installed. Farmers and ranchers, though, are happy. “We were way behind in moisture, and we caught up and got an extra five or six inches” of rain in June, said Mr. Schweitzer, a farmer and a soil scientist. “Every extra inch of rain above average means seven more bushels per acre, and we got six inches,” he said. “We’ll get 40 more bushels per acre this year. That makes it a billion-dollar storm.”

Oddly -- or maybe not not-so! -- the terms "climate change" and "global warming" were nowhere to be found in the Times article. Hmmm.

Of course, one year's worth of record snowfalls doesn't disprove the global warming myth. However, as drought conditions in this region ease, as do temperatures around the supposedly warming planet, shouldn't there come a point when a more honest and fact-based discussion concerning climate change ensues?

What if 1998 continues to be the warmest year in this cycle, and temperatures moving forward continue their recent downward path? Shouldn't we begin re-evaluating whether or not there's any cause for alarm as well as the possibility that scientists who have been calling this all part of a long-term nature climate cycle are actually correct?

Or does that make too much sense?

It's chilly here in Spencerport, NY. Damn global warming!!!

"...one year's worth of

"...one year's worth of record snowfalls doesn't disprove the global warming..." True, but if held to the same standards the Global Warmongers use, it would not only disprove APGW, but it would 'prove' APGC (cooling), and they'd be warning of a coming Ice Age if we don't hurry up and stop abusing mother earth.

Dittos

You are exactly right, the warmers cite 1998 as proof of warming, so citing 2007 as proof of cooling is also correct. Goose - gander .. .

I find this subject amusing

I find this subject amusing mainly since I was just at that national park on vacation a couple weeks ago.

At the time the pass had 50ft snow drifts so that roadway was a wash (you can only go up so high.) It also snowed a good amount the week before we came.

BTW, great place to visit. Wonderful sights, was honestly one of my favorite vacations.

RDD

RDD,

Been there many times. My closest friend lives in Sandpoint, Idaho, and has property in Yaak, Montana, just under Glacier. As a result, in the past 20 years I've been through the park on a fairly regular basis. Amazing stuff.

Of course, I've never had problems driving the Sun Road even though my travels there have typically been around the 4th. ns

Just got back myself

My son and I joined friends on a one-week camping trip near Missoula last month. We drove north to Glacier before we headed to camp and were quite bummed that we could only go 16 miles into the park because of the bad snow this year. Worse, it rained all day, and we couldn't see the mountains because of the fog.

We definitely want to go back someday -- when the globe is much warmer.

this is proof positive of Global Warming

I mean didn't they tell us that this is the Global Cooling caused by the Global Warming?

[it's July 3rd and here in the Twin Cities it is 65 degrees, if that's Global Warming I can hardly wait to see how 'warm' this winter is going to be]

I like how Mr. Sheppard

I like how Mr. Sheppard pointed out that this particular record snowfall doesn't disprove global warming.  That is exactly the perfect point!

One can't say "It was 55 degrees in my city today and its July!" and say that this proves global warming is a myth.  Just like one can't say "We haven't had any rain for almost 30 days" and say that this proves global warming is real.

Weather is freaky sometimes.  Unpredictable.  Most of the time, the local TV weatherguessers can't even accurately predict the next 24 hours weather wise.

People seem to forget our planet is some 4 billion years old.  We didn't just go from a world of molten lava to lush jungles and crystal blue oceans over a period of a 3day weekend.  Ice ages don't just suddenly happen.  Everything is gradual.  If mankind is screwing up the climate (which I believe is entirely possible) its not going to happen over a period of 5 years and it can't be reversed in the span of 5 years.

150 years from now the planet *might* have a noticeably different climate then it has today.  But its not going to be something like:  2014, perfectly normal year and 2015 total bedlam.

Am I ranting?   I just wish people would stop pointing to isolated weather events in a single area of the United States and say it conclusively proves, one way or the other, that the entire climate of the entire planet is or is not changing.

"I don't want your 'us or them'..."  --  The Cure

Of course not, cure

Local weather patterns are just that, local. On the other hand, seeing as how global temp averages have had a downward trend the last few years, shoud indicate a lack of GW evidence. Climate change was adopted by the AGW crowd because warming stoped. Now they say, and this is the AGW bunch, they say the earth is cooling and will cool for about 10 years. But then it will be back! It will come back!! If man casued the latest rise in temps, and not steps have been taken to combat it, why is the global average temps droping?

The earth is 4 billion years old, as you said. And one thing that has earth has always had was a changing climate. And now, some greedy people want to blame us, just to make a buck and convert all the countries into global socialism and global taxes.

Save a SeAL, club a liberal!!

Okay.  I agree that the

Okay.  I agree that the global warming hype could lead to certain people making some ill-gotten money.  But I don't quite see the connection to "global socialism".

But you're absolutely right about the long term.  And those are the trends to observe.  But making statements like "It was 49 degrees in Charlotte this morning, this PROVES there is no global warming".  Or statements like "There is a Category 5 hurricane bearing down on us, this proves global warming is REAL".  Its just utter foolishness.

But I don't quite see the connection to "global socialism".

Well, if you define global socialism as rich countries having to pay poor countries billions because of binding agreements...

"Okay. I agree that the global warming hype could lead to certain

Then you should dig a little deeper. The UN has been trying to get the power to tax the US for years in one way or another so they can take from us and redistribute to others. Global warming is just the latest, most well-known attempt to do this.

I especially enjoyed #26. About presenting homosexuality as a "normal natural activity". Pretty remarkable considering homosexuality was outlawed in Russia until 1993 and was considered a mental disorder in Russia until 1999. (Which, of course, was after the fall of Communism). A plot that Rube Goldberg would be proud of!

This is unbelieveable

This just popped up on Drudge.....

Due to pending disasters predicted because of global warming, government scientists are urging the creation of a new Earth Systems Science Agency -- by merging the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the U.S. Geological Survey...

'The United States faces unprecedented environmental and economic challenges in the decades ahead,' the group warns. 'Foremost among them will be climate change, sea-level rise, altered weather patterns, declines in freshwater availability and quality and loss of biodiversity'... Developing...

It is only called Global

It is only called Global warming when it seems to fit their conclusions. When it doesn't it is called Climate change. Both are the fault of man and we need the government to intervene on our behalf to save us. There will be no debate on the issue  because Mr. Gore made a movie that explains everything. The only scientist to be recognized on this matter are the ones that are in agreement with man made global warming.  We need to stop pointing out the inconsistence's of the global warming wisdom. How dare we question what has been accepted as fact. Who needs a debate when you have a movie that some scientists agree with. So shut up, open your wallets and for a sacrificial fee from the public the Democrats will come in and save the planet.

Very true about the Going

Very true about the Going to the Sun Road, I live near this area and worked in Glacier Park for two seasons when I lived in Big Fork...my brothr still does.

This year has been something else with Global Warming let me tell you...but heck, what do we know.

Only Al Gore do.

BT

BT,

I was hoping you were going to comment, because I've got a GREAT story for you about the Sun Road. About ten years ago, before one of my friend's parties in Yaak, my family vacationed in Glacier. This included my wife, who isn't a camper. So, we stayed at the various "hotels" inside rather than tents.

Anyway, the day we drove the Sun Road heading to Watertown Lakes, my wife was so afraid we were going to drive over the cliff that she was clinging to the inside of the car like Spiderman. To this day, the kids continue to tease her about it. :-) ns

LOL Noel... That is one

LOL Noel...

That is one very spooky road at times, depending...really.

What I am trying to say is camper or no camper, I can understand your wife and her fears...it can look like you have nowhere to go but d-o-w-n-....a very, very, long way...especially if you have fears of heights ect...

Other traffic is what is spooky at times...I'm sure you know what I mean.

As an aside...I worked at Lake MacDonald...if you know where that is...

I know the area you were heading to also.

BT

BT,

I've camped at Lake MacDonald. Was woken one beautiful morning by an elk the size of a Hummer. I think it was a hybrid! :-) ns
