If you needed any more evidence as to just how far to the left NASA's James Hansen is, consider that on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of his highly-controversial testimony to Congress -- wherein he presaged gloom and doom at the hands of the naturally occurring gas carbon dioxide -- he decided to make his global warming case at the ultra-leftwing website the Huffington Post (h/t NBer NL207).
This puts him in the company of such luminaries as Alec Baldwin, John Cusack, Bill Maher, and other Hollywoodans feigning intellectual superiority.
Of course, this comes after being interviewed on the ultra-leftwing National Public Radio.
If this guy's an impartial, unbiased member of the scientific community, so's Rosie O'Donnell!
Frankly, I have absolutely no interest in quoting anything this man has to say. As such, those that can stand it should go here -- with my blessings and condolences.

I want to say more..but will get kicked off if I do.
In fact I am listening to H&C right now and this twit gal Julie is saying what a premier guy he is...blah blah blah...she is a witch with no brain cells that work but a great smile...we don't need to put drill bits in the ground..just plug in your vehicles at night...all will be okay...bet she's an over-educated college wonderment that couldn't survive on her own if she tried.
Lord help us all...I'd like to say I see comedy at times..but these idiots scare me.

Interesting that FOX didn't have any alternate view than Hannity. There are lot's of things with this story. Maybe FOX doesn't want the whole story.

June 23, 2008 - 23:08 ET by zeestephenNoel,
Since NASA employee James Hansen gave his first apocalyptic prediction in 1988, Earth's average temperature anomaly has actually DECLINED about 0.3 degrees C.
Chris Horner at NRO's "Planet Gore" (6/23 10:30AM) has the NASA Satellite Temp chart.
Horner got the original chart from icecap.us.

June 23, 2008 - 23:22 ET by kgFrom Wikipedia: He is currently an adjunct professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Columbia University and also serves as Al Gore's science advisor.
Education:Hansen was trained in physics and astronomy in the space science program of Dr. James Van Allen
at the University of Iowa. He obtained a B.A. in Physics and
Mathematics with highest distinction in 1963, an M.S. in Astronomy in
1965 and a Ph.D. in Physics, in 1967, all three degrees from the University of Iowa.
He participated in the NASA graduate traineeship from 1962 to 1966 and,
at the same time, between 1965 and 1966, he was a visiting student at
the Institute of Astrophysics at the University of Kyoto and in the Department of Astronomy at the University of Tokyo.
Hmmmmmm, for a "professional" on climatology I see nothing in his education that affords him any expertise on global warming.

James Hansen, one of the world's leading climate scientists, will today call for the chief executives of large fossil fuel companies to be put on trial for high crimes against humanity and nature, accusing them of actively spreading doubt about global warming in the same way that tobacco companies blurred the links between smoking and cancer.

climatology is an art, not a science
June 23, 2008 - 22:42 ET by jondelwicheIt is amazing the "science" they try to apply here.
No control groups. No study groups. No p values.
Even the anecdotal evidence is against them:
the glacier melt of recent millenia means earth has warmed
50 degrees or more from the last ice age.
And they have to state as: 100 parts per million because
it is hard to sell (the equivalent) a 1 part per 10,000 increase CO2
as a reason for global annihilation.
Climatology is far more art than science, and while everyone
is entitled to their opinion, it is so odd the MSM is so
UNdemanding for scientific based evidence.
Meanwhile, the MSM will skewer the FDA for approving a
medicine (i.e. Vioxx) where scientific methodology showed a 95%
confidence value that it was as safe as placebo.
And we know how that turned out.....
If only the MSM demanded the same from the ART of
climatology.
Is this the beginning of the end?
June 23, 2008 - 22:56 ET by pbthinkerIs this the beginning of the end of this debate? Once the debate turns from science to politics it's pretty much over, don't you think? Between Gore, telling the press they shouldn't print any media that doesn't agree with him and the left wing papers pushing the consensus (while avoiding 31,000 scientists) pretty much seals the argument that they can not win the debate on the facts. All they can do is preach to the choir and hope they can create enough zeal to overcome their deficit of facts.

June 24, 2008 - 02:20 ET by marvl"A PhD does not make one smart...."
Very true. As the old saw goes, post graduate study is the process of studying more and more about less and less until one knows everything about nothing. Couple that with an overheated head (cranial warming?) and you have the recipe for someone like Hansen.

Government scientists
June 24, 2008 - 01:50 ET by 10ksnookerTo be fair, the fellow is a self taught expert on the climate science, as am I. What I have learned is the following ...
Here we have a government scientist, on the government payroll, working at a government facility, testifying before a government panel on why you should pay more in taxes. If that isn't a biased setup, masquerading as science, I don't know what is.
Pay more in taxes so government can PRETEND to control the weather. How would you know? I suppose the government scientist would come back and tell government it's working, in exchange for the taxes being high enough.
My computer programmable crystal ball says the sun will win the argument.

June 24, 2008 - 08:52 ET by sam.i.amI hate to be crass. O.K., I'm actually quite fine with it.
If NASA wasn't spending millions and millions on phony climate propaganda and research, maybe we wouldn't have shuttles blowing up, pieces falling off, and a gap of 5-10 years in vehicles between the shuttle and the next generation ship.
How can NASA have a vision for the future when they are so mired in this controversy? Ozone holes and global warming and other climatology BS seem to dominate the headlines.
The mission they did to impact the comet was great (the show about it on TLC? was inspiring), the mars landers are great. There are still many scientific accomplishments and accomplished scientists at NASA, but it's this "vision thing" and a diversion of resources that troubles me.
Global Warming, Israel!
June 24, 2008 - 09:21 ET by CrashI'm a proud card carrying AGW "DENIER" since I actually read the first vague indictment made by the largest hate group on the planet ... the UN.
Have any of you noticed how the IPCC report and the push for climate related stories have become more urgent with a Republican in the White House? Much like aids and the homeless were huge stories before Clinton sullied the desk and an interns dress, or two. Perhaps our lame duck should switch party names before leaving office and McCain should run as an independent? Regardless, Republicans without teeth will leave frauds like Hansen in their posts. I know NASA is considered private, but, who are we trying to kid?
Same old, same old.
June 24, 2008 - 10:14 ET by Dave in TexasI read the transcript of the testimony he gave before Congress. The only good thing I can say about it is the tone has become just about as alarmist as you can get, which will soon make it apparent that he has no idea what he's talking about when none of his dire predictions come true:
"Climate can reach points such that amplifying feedbacks spur large
rapid changes. Arctic sea ice is a current example. Global warming
initiated sea ice melt, exposing darker ocean that absorbs more
sunlight, melting more ice. As a result, without any additional
greenhouse gases, the Arctic soon will be ice-free in the summer."
That's funny. Last year, Arctic sea ice reached a record low (for the period of 1979 to 2007). In addition, we do have additional greenhouse gases. So, according to James, since more darker ocean was exposed, absorbing more sunlight, it should be even lower this year. That doesn't appear to happening though.
And I didn't even mention the Antarctic sea ice, which none of the alarmists ever want to talk about for some strange reason. :)
Government Bureaucracies
June 24, 2008 - 10:26 ET by mbs6Like all government bureaucracies, NASA's primary goal is its own survival as an agency. NASA's secondary goal is to explore space. One of the standard plays to ensure an agency's survival is to constantly expand in scope and to usurp authority which exceeds the original charter. It gives the appearance that the agency is doing important work and makes it that much harder for congress to cut funding.
A strong example of this is when they were all fighting over Elian Gonzales. Because it was something of a grey area, you had many different state and federal agencies trying to assert their authority on the issue. It is normal for a government agency to seek new powers.
I do not hold a Phd in physics, but I did take several engineering, calculus-based physics classes in college. Physics is true science. Global warming alarmism is a betrayal of science at best and an outright lie at worst.

Hypocrisy check on Hansen
June 24, 2008 - 13:51 ET by TjexciteHas anyone done a hypocrisy check on Hansen? Where does he live and how big is his "carbon footprint". Did he walk to congress or take a car and plane just to complain. When he tells them not to do what he just did. What is he energy use and has he decreased or stopped in 20 years. Many stars have been shown to be nothing but hypocrisy when seen what their footprint is like Goralce. Is James the same way. Or does he live in a biolike dome that total off the grid. Hansen spouting AGW @ huff&puffpost.com
June 24, 2008 - 19:25 ET by hwm98264hwm982xx
...Mr. Hansen fails completely to put forward any conclusive scientific evidence nor facts to back up his radical position, absolutely none, on this very critical and potentially catastrophically expensive frenzy on CO2 caused Global Warming. All of his arguments here are more of the fear, scare and dire predictions universally used by the global warming alarmists. It is disgusting.
...He is right about one thing, though. What is desperately needed is an open, honest debate on AGW. Preferably in court with an honest Judge and with honest MSM coverage. Another congressional committee hearing is useless. Otherwise, there never will be a open debate because the global warming alarmists will NOT debate. They have no scientific arguments.
This is good news.
July 13, 2008 - 08:04 ET by papertigerHansen was made to look the fool when he assed out of a debate with Pat Michaels at William and Mary college.
So just to maintain the pretention of courage of his convictions, he hauled his ass out of his GISS cucoon to make a public statement...
It's just arm waving, and retreads of his usual discredited crap. The only purpose it serves is to presdidigitate away his personal cowardice from the other day, for the benefit of the true believers.
The good thing? He ran to Huffpo. This is shown as a good thing by the comment section. There are a surprising number of Democrats who are seeing through Jimmy's bullshit over there.
Huffpo is a house divided on the topic of global warming. Perhaps not with the contributors but definitely with the audience. Hansen needed to hit a homerun with the "base", instead he gave them personal assurances that he is "better then 99% sure" that AGW's not a load of cow flop. Judging by the comments, I don't think the Donks bought it.
