Will Media Report Cold Spells This Summer or Only the Heatwaves?

Photo of Noel Sheppard.

Media have been falling all over themselves to report the recent heatwave in the East, but have been ignoring the cold spells happening in other parts of the country at virtually the same time.

For instance, did you know that the first week of June was the coldest in Seattle since 1891? Or that Aspen is actually re-opening this weekend to offer winter sports enthusiasts some rare June skiing in the area? Or how about the fact that unusually cold waters off of Nova Scotia are harming this year's lobster crop?

Aren't such unseasonal weather events just as newsworthy as heatwaves in summer? Or must they be ignored to fit the media's global warming template?

Assuming the latter, just to add some balance, let's first check in with the Seattle Times to see how Nobel Laureate Al Gore's bogeyman is impacting that part of the country (emphasis added in all subsequent articles):

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Think it's cold? You have good reason.

Seattle just experienced the coldest first week of June, according to climate records dating to 1891, said Cliff Mass, University of Washington metrologist. Both 1999 and 2008 share the record, with 1917 falling in second place, he said. "Just wait until tomorrow," he said, when temperatures are going to be even colder.

A heavy snow warning has been issued for the Washington Cascades and Olympics as a storm from the Gulf of Alaska plows into the state tonight.

Didn't hear about Seattle's cold spell? Well, how about the one in Montana?

The Missoula Parks and Recreation Department has decided to close the Splash Montana Waterpark this week, because cold weather is forecast.

Or Nova Scotia?

Water temperature played a big part in the last minute scramble that closed the season with temperatures falling so low the lobsters were not crawling.

In order for the lobsters to crawl into a trap the water has to be at least over the 40-degree mark and Crouse said the spring season has hardly any times when the conditions are right.

“Our spring is just not viable,” he said. “Global warming is having the opposite effect for us and we are seeing the temperatures of the water stay lower for longer.”

And finally, June skiing in Colorado:

The Aspen Skiing Company said Monday that it will open up Aspen Mountain from June 13 to 15 for skiers and snowboarders.

The company says record winter snowfall has left the mountain covered with snow, leaving behind an average of more than 3 feet of snow on the upper slopes.

Are any of these weather-related events newsworthy? Or are temperatures only important to media when they validate the global warming myth?

*****Update: Shrimp season also delayed in Mississippi as a result of colder than normal Gulf temperatures (h/t NBer tater).

Heat waves only.

Heat waves only.

And ...

And the heat waves will never be put in context of weather history:

Newscaster: "16 year old Jenny Smith says she can't ever remember it being this hot."

Jenny Smith: "I can't ever remember it being this hot."

Nobody will mention the heatwaves of 1963, 1932, 1908, 1888, and 1871.

Snow in Cascades

I did hear about this story, but not the many others on this list.  I know in the south it is really hot, they are setting records, but to balance that out Seattle is not setting records for lows as well.  The MSM might (I mean a very slight chance) report on the cold weather, but most of their attention will be the heat and the storms in the mid-west (where I live) and there will be no time left for the record colds.  This is what I think will happen on tonight's news.

The media

Only reports on what supports their agenda. We dont have a real media any more.Just information outlets for special interest groups.

Noel, I did see a short

Noel, I did see a short little clip of the snow this morning. One of the networks, I dont know which one, I was flipping the channels and came across it while they were talking about the heat in the NE then the guy pointed out that there was snow in the NW. I was a bit suprised they even mentioned it, let alone show the video.

Save a SeAL, club a liberal!!

Well they may mention it,

Well they may mention it, but they certainly aren't doing whole stories on it, like they are doing with the heat. They are not interviewing people to opine on why this is, forecast how long it will last and will it get worse.

MB, they gave it about 20

MB, they gave it about 20 secs on screen. I figured it hurt them to do that much. I bet they get hate mail from the green lobby.

Save a SeAL, club a liberal!!

...and wasn't global

...and wasn't global warming supposed to warm the oceans and seas. Well take a look at this article about the shrimp industry in the Gulf of Mexico. They are pushing shrimp season back a week because the water is too cold.

With extremes on the two

With extremes on the two coasts and storms in the middle I'm surprised the MSM haven't been pushing their "climate change" buttons, kinda their default position when it's not all about global warming. In the Pacific NorthWest  it's so cold locals have started calling this "Junuary".

Actually,...

...I think the "lesson" being missed with all the cooler than average tempertures and all is how much greater ocean temperatures are influencing the weather and, by extension, the climate.

Consider that la Nina begat the recent drop in average global temperatures and that was despite the high levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

But, surely, the climate alarmists would have us believe that CO2 is such a major influence that surely cool ocean temperatures could not possibly cause such a sharp reduction in the global average temperatures, wouldn't they?

Barrack will save us all !!!!!

First of all the correct term has been changed to keep up with what is actually taking place not what has been predicted. Global warming is now out and climate change is now in. Imagine the shame if Nobel lauret AL Gore was wrong. This way Enviremental whako liberal nuts can have thier cake and eat it too. I just hope that it is not too late for Barrack Obama to save the world. Can he really fly faster than a speeding bullet?

Global Warming my

Global Warming my arse!!!

Snowed all morning here...I had a longer post, shortened it up hoping this one makes it to the board...

anyone else having problems on the site today or is just my PC or local IP...

Thanks for any input...

Btw Noel...thanks for the Missoula link. I will be using it for politics on down the line.

Howdy bass...I'd laugh if

Howdy bass...I'd laugh if this wasn't so sad, as dbo said we are calling this Junuary around here...

I think this will be the first time I am not planting my other flowers, won't be enough time left in the season for the expense or bother...

I saw the msm barely mention this early this morning about the cold/snow in the NW and more to come yet...but act as if this all caused by global warming...if I hear that word as serious one more time....I am going to scream...so you know I will be screaming for a long time...lol.

Algore and his scam...along with the rest of the leftists...these people are insane with their schemes and dreams. What is really sad is McCain agrees with this.

Environmental News

A few months ago I was puzzled by the MSM reports of the impending environmental disaster of Lake Powell and the Colorado River. The alarmists were screaming that the lake was 50 -60 ft low and would dry up in 50 years,( that is an actual report) . That seemed a bit drastic even for a seasoned conclusion jumper like yours truly.

Son in Colorado goes white water rafting this weekend and tells me the rivers and runoff are unbelievable . He says the the water is higher than he has ever seen. So I go over to the Lake Powell Chronicle , Page , Arizona and viola, a story reveals "Lake Powell continues to rise. Lake level 3613 msl "and still rising. The lake has a long way to go before leveling off . Considering the snow pack far up in the water shed I would guesstimate around 50 or 60 feet oughta do it.

I seriously doubt we will see the rest of the story in the MSM.

Where's all the water???

I thought the whole polar region was turning tropical. Anyone watch History Channel's "Ice Road Truckers?"

Last year, they were driving on frozen Canadian lakes. But this year, they are driving their 80 plus thousand pound rigs...OUT ON THE ARCTIC OCEAN!!!

It's the middle of June here in central Missouri, and last night, I lit a small fire in the wood stove to knock off the chill.

Even if they do cover these "cool" stories, they will be touched on once and let go. If it is a "heat" story, it will top out every segment for the duration of the event, and then there will be 3 day's worth of aftermath stories following.

I got a house full of curly light bulbs. There have been hundreds of new trees grow on my 10 acres in the past 15 years I've been here. My home is in the 60's in the winter, and I only heat the rooms I am in. I'm not a nut about it...I just like to save money.

What's my point? I think I'm just about as "green" as the best of 'em. But the problem is, when the Dummycrats get their way, they are going to want me to "sacrifice." What more can I do, but just die, and quit exhaling CO2?

Oh Oh...shhhhhhhhhhh...don't give the Dummycrats another idea.

implying that that there could be a bias?

Is there actual tracking of the reporting of weather news to expose liberal media bias or is this post just implying that that there could be a bias?

Would you be looking at regional or local reporting or looking at local events that get national coverage?

Beyond that, even the most doltish have figured out that weather is not climate and local is not global, so using weather extremes to attempt to prove that AGW is false just doesn't work. If that reporting is to assuage skeptics, it must be an odd consolation, knowing that that argument holds no water.

Ironically, it is the most

Ironically, it is the most doltish who watch the constant barrage of "weather so hot you'll die the moment you step outside" news stories and buy into the Global Warming Charade, joining the ranks of fellow mental giants such as yourself.

I'm with you on 2 out of

I'm with you on 2 out of 3.  Some are attributing the Labrador Current's lower temperature readings due to increased calving of the glaciers in the higher lattitudes.  Record numbers of icebergs off Newfoundland are being reported. The key is whether or not the leading edge of glaciers are advancing or receding as well as their depth.

"Fighters are fun but bombers make policy"

The Weather Channel

The weather channel has multiple reporters in the northeast doing live reports on the heat wave there. Haven't seen any reports from Seattle or Aspen though.

The hottest, driest year I

The hottest, driest year I personally remember here in Iowa was in 1988. 1984 was an awful drought year. My memory of the 80's were mostly hot and dry summers.

The summers of the 90's were mostly cooler and definitely wetter. It doesn't like we have as many 100 degree days each summer in the last two decades as we did in the late 70's and 80's.

But none of this matters to the climate nuts. Since they changed it from "Global Warming" to "Climate Change" even snow in the Cascades in June, or the extremely late spring we had here, is "proof" of the "damage" that man is wreaking upon the environment. Heads I win. Tails I win.

Now all the media needs is "wacky weather" to prove climate change. And when isn't weather wacky? If the weather were "normal", they'd be talking about how unusual it was that we weren't having any unusual weather. Then they'd point their fingers at climate change again. It's the perfect no-lose argument.

NYC Heat Wave?

Check it out:

http://www.wunderground.com/history/airport/KNYC/2008/6/10/MonthlyHistory.html

(scroll down about half way)

4 Days is "not" a heatwave, puhlez!

The definition recommended by the World Meteorological Organization is when the daily maximum temperature of more than five consecutive days exceeds the average maximum temperature by 5 °C (9 °F), the normal period being 1961 - 1990

ref:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heat_wave

NYC only had 4 days...and now they are, at this very moment, being slammed by thunderstorms and the forecast for the rest of the week is for normal temperatures and a good chance of rain toward the end of the week.

4 days above average, whoopee!  Sky is falling!

The West coast has been COLD for months..not just a few days.

Long range forecasts call for continued coldness for the West coast.

Some scientific insight here:

Ciao!

It's a twister Auntie Em!

Don't forget tornadoes. The media dearly wants to make this year's busy tornado season a global warming consequence.

http://newsbusters.org/blogs/mark-finkelstein/2008/05/10/weekend-captionfest-ii

Even scientists, while not going on the record saying global warming causes more tornadoes, they indirectly link them. They make vague statements linking super cell formation and atmospheric moisture to global warming, and hence to tornadoes.

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/06/080602231312.htm

While these factors contribute to tornado formation the exact cause is still unknown. It is believed that local atmospheric conditions are the biggest factors in tornado formation.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tornado

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tornado

http://www.weather.com/encyclopedia/tornado/form.html

Just like with everything else involving global warming, the believers amplify what they know, and suppress the rest. The message they give the media is that they know exactly what they are talking about and only discuss what re-enforces their theory. They conveniently forget to tell the reporters the very important stuff that doesn't fit the theory.
