Media Admission: 'Republicans Face More Scrutiny on Race Than Democrats'

In the past several months, NewsBusters has been regularly revealing the race-baiting by the Clinton campaign while asking why media weren't doing a better a job of reporting it.

At the same time, we've been wondering whether such issues will be similarly ignored if Barack Obama won the nomination, or if race and racism would be used to help him defeat John McCain.

On Sunday, an article in New York's Newsday gave a somewhat predictable preview of how media will cover this matter much differently than they did during the primaries by actually admitting in print that Republicans "face more scrutiny on race than Democrats" (emphasis added throughout):

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Now that Barack Obama has clinched the Democratic nomination, Republican John McCain faces the unprecedented, and tricky, task of building a campaign against the first black presidential candidate of a major party in a general election campaign.

A key test may come in how McCain and groups supporting him treat Obama's former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr., and his incendiary comments as a campaign issue, something the Obama and McCain campaigns have skirmished over.

Hmmm. So, if McCain brings up Wright, he's a racist? Wow.

Newsday then presented as a cautionary example for McCain the 2006 Massachusetts governor's race:

Trailing Democrat Deval Patrick, like Obama, a charismatic African-American with less political experience than his opponent, [white Republican woman Kerry] Healey ran television ads about Patrick's legal and financial help to a black convicted rapist and a cop-killer.

One ad, featuring a woman walking in an ominous dimly lit parking garage, appeared to work at first, Suffolk University pollster David Paleologos said, narrowing Patrick's lead. "They got the emotional response they needed initially," he said.

But after critics, including the state Democratic chairman, ripped the ad as "race baiting" and "fear mongering," Paleologos said it backfired on her. "That was the tipping point for her own personal demise," Paleologos said.

Healey, the underdog, lost by 20 points.

To further give you the idea of just what McCain is up against, read this:

Pollsters say that any time someone who is not white runs for a major office in America, race at the very least is a subtext to the contest. [...]

Sensitivity to race is so great that an ad or statement that some think is OK can be branded as offensive by commentators and the media, shifting the political dynamic.

Wow. Yet, as was evident during the primaries, there's a media double standard here:

Add to that the fact that because Republicans have fought the civil-rights establishment and nationally get few black votes, they face more scrutiny on race than Democrats.

Healey's media adviser, Stuart Stevens, insists that no Republican would say what Hillary Clinton said about Obama being unable to win white working-class votes.

Wow! Well, there it is: Republicans face more scrutiny on race than Democrats.

Any questions?

...and groups supporting him...?

A key test may come in how McCain and groups supporting him treat Obama's former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr., and his incendiary comments as a campaign issue, something the Obama and McCain campaigns have skirmished over.

We all know from the 2004 race how thin the line is between some of the 527's and the actual campaigns and yet only conflicts on the Republican side saw any ink. Remember also that Obama and surrogates (MSM) demanded that McCain "must" change the course of some of the 527's rhetoric as if he had any true obligation or control.

Yet when a clearly anti-semitic blog entry on Obama's own site is posted and then removed somehow the MSM is not interested in the lack of oversight the Obama campaign has over it's own legal domain since the "inconvenient impurity" had been extricated.

Answer: they were all Democrats, not Republicans

  • Question: Throughout the primaries, who suggested that Hillary shouldn't even bother campaigning in Carolina because blacks are so racist that they'll only vote for a black guy?
  • Question: What were all those people in West Virginia who, according to exit polls, refused to vote for a black candidate?
  • Question: Which voters responded to pollsters using the Bradley Effect, where they didn't want to be accused of racism and so they overexaggerated their willingness to vote for Obama, but once they got into the actual voting booth, realized that they wouldn't vote for a black man?
  • Question: Who are the only people to have had a chance to vote for Obama, but wouldn't because he was black?

What do all these people have in common?

Looking for a 'D'

KC Mulville  Is looking for a "D', can anyone provide him with one? At least they split into the Racist and Sexist groups we knew already existed. Hard to hide it when your own press corp blast it across the world 24-7. A female with a life long history as a criminal, and a 6% black Male that won't even tell the truth about his background, race, or religion, and has '0' accomplishment and '0' experience as a leader are hero's to 'who'?

I'm not being racist or sexist when I say  neither of them should or would get 10 votes out of 300 million citizens if the citizens were as smart as they think they are. I'm a democrat (or republican) and I'll always vote for my party is not smart, in fact it is insane.

I'm going to sit this one out and enjoy the screaming when the result is you losing everything you value, maybe even your life.

The first time Obama bowls

The first time Obama bowls over an 80, it'll be front page news. Just you wait.

Racism

90% or more of the media hypes are liberals, Communist, Socialist  (brain dead) and support democrats in an attempt to bury the fact that they and  the democrats are, and always have been, the party leading the charge to stop progress by minorities. That  makes the media types racist with a pencil. What is really stupid is the fact that if the media got the government they fight for they wouldn't be alive 24 hours. In the world of repression (they seem to love) reporters write what the leadership tells them or disappear. This is evident in the few communist countries that still exist but the reporters and democrats fit the description 'No one is as blind as the sighted that will not see'.

Calling Mike Huckabee

So it appears John McCain has three races to run:

One against B. Hussein O.,

a second against the media,

and a third against his pandering, flip-flopping self.  He could still possibly win if only he could remember that Iraqi al-Qaeda terrorists don't train in Iran.  Lord help us.  Where is Mike Huckabee when you need him?

Wrong

There is substantial evidence that Iran is/was supplying money and arms to Al Qaeda in Iraq. Iran will help anybody that wants to kill Americans or Israelis just as they supply Hamas in Gaza, a Sunni group. Iran has also been supplying AQ and the Taliban in Afghanistan as we have busted several arms shipments cominy out of Iran and Bin Laden's family is sheltering in Iran.

Interesting...

So you're saying Lieberman was wrong that day he corrected McCain & then McCain agreed with him, making McCain wrong, too? Or did McCain let something secret slip, maybe? And I thought Bin Laden's family is for the most part still living in Saudi Arabia, and that they have disavowed Osama (allegedly...). This seems quite odd. And it might be just a bit easier to believe with perhaps a link or 2...
JMR

The tax & spend drug war looks racist in the real world.

Bill Roggio's Long War

Bill Roggio's Long War Journal has reported on it many times. McCain was correct to begin with and Liebs was wrong. OBL's wife and some of his kids are in Iran. This is the most recent link the others were a few months ago but if you actually followed real war reporting and not the MSM you would know this. It seems Mike Yon also reported on Iranian made arms being captured in Mosul, missiles, EFPs, mortars and such coming from Syria an Iranian ally.

Where is Huckabee when you need him?

I heard he was in Salt Lake City telling Mormons that they were all going to hell because they weren't exactly like him.

Hopefully, he is back in Arkansas and will never be heard from again!  He is as big a tool as McPain!

How Shallow

...and a third against his pandering, flip-flopping self. He could still possibly win if only he could remember that Iraqi al-Qaeda terrorists don't train in Iran. Lord help us. Where is Mike Huckabee when you need him?

First of all I believe the misquote involved shiite vs. sunni. Could be wrong but don't try to tell say that John McCain doesn't have a good grasp on the overall situation and how the various players fit.

Second, show us the exact quote.

Third, al-Qaeda has been training in Iran. maybe you don't want to believe it but it true. Not to mention that Iranians themselves have been caught too.

Fourth, Mike Huckabee? Please! And forget the idea of him being VP - that guy has a motormouth that would provide every leftist MSM member with material for years to come.

Fifth, if we want to go with verbal gaffes why don't we go with ones that are indisputable proof of a genuine lack of knowledge of being a US citizen: 57 states. Not only did Obama say 57 states but he attempted to correct himself by giving himself some wiggle room. He still was 6 states off.

Please give it up.

 Pretty much the same thing

Pretty much the same thing I have been saying, Repubs are protecting the Dems from themselves. Kinda like taking a pencil from a toddler so when they fall they wont stab themselves. They whine when you take the pencil, but most of us know it is the right thing to do.

One day we will have our backs turned, and they will be running full speed with that pencil, the results will be predictable for the responsible folks.

"Television is a freak show" Bernie Goldberg

Hmmmm

Barack's mom was white and his dad was black. Being that I'm white (not of my own doing, I'm so ashamed!) if I call him a white hippie radical elitist am I racist?

Sigh, it's all so silly.

Race

Race is not always a factor. When Micheal Steele ran for the US Senate, Md., race wasn't a factor. Unless you count the Oreo Cookie Incident, the undercurrent that he was nothing but a tool of the White Party (republican), or the near unaminous endorsement of the Democrat by every black organization. It was as if Steele had done nothing, ever, to deserve a black vote. If we had exclusively white organizations (God Forbid!) that enmass supported a white candidate the national press would clamour for investigations from the FBI to the IRS, to the Civil Rights Comission. "Republicans have fought the civil-rights establishment" is partially true. They have fought the organizations that have become radical, Democratic Party annexes. They also were the earliest supporters of the NAACP when the Democrats were still "keeping 'em cropping and being good."

The current rules have been laid out by the MSM

Being for Obama because he is black is OK. Being against Obama will immediately result in the assumption that you are racist (guilty until proven innocent). These will be used until they are no longer beneficial for Obama.

The day that "politician" became a career choice is the day we started losing the Republic. Let's get it back! Alan Keyes '08.

Obama is more racist than McCain

Clearly Obama is more racist than McCain. McCain's background does NOT include association with "minority-haters." Obama, on the other hand, is associated with many "white-race-haters." And it begs the question, "Does Obama treat women as 'hoes'?"

You must be mistaken.

Obama's liaisons are frustrated with the mistakes of the white race; they never admitted to hating whites.

You gotta be kidding me

Republicans have fought the civil-rights establishment and
nationally get few black votes, they face more scrutiny on race than
Democrats.

Are they serious? Fought the civil rights establishment? I do believe the Dims have a long and undistinguished track record on fighting civil rights. The senior senator from here in WV stands out as a example.

----

Exactly what I was thinking.  Many Senate Democrats fiercely fought against the 1964 Civil Rights Act.  Byrd himself filibustered it for 14 hours.  An enlightened Democrat by the name of Richard Russell made the final arguments against the bill.  It was Republicans who rounded up the cloture votes so that the bill could be voted on and passed.

This reporter needs to do some elementary research before speaking of the history of civil rights in this country.

dahlia... What an

dahlia...

What an excellent link.

too bad some of the blacks in the dem party don't bother to know the history...the majority of the msm always ignores this fact, always attempting to rewrite history to their way of thinking....for the leftist party they work for....

Good ol' agenda...

Sad really.

C'mon Noel

Everyone knows the Republicans are the racists and the Democrats are the saviors of the races.

The left started taking control of our system a long time ago. They had a plan and it is all coming together.

They are firmly in control of our schools and unless something drastic happins we are in deep mireda.
