In case you hadn't heard yet, the big, bad global warming bill authored by Senators Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) and John Warner (R-Virg.) was pulled for consideration Friday as sponsors were unable to drum up enough support for it to have any chance of passing.
This presents an interesting opportunity for climate alarmists in the media to have to choose what they will blame the speedy demise of this legislation on: currently exploding energy prices and the public's disinterest in a bill that will raise them further, or those dastardly, environmentally-challenged Republicans.
In fact, even the Associated Press seems torn on this issue, and released two different takes on Friday thereby giving press outlets a truly convenient culprit option (picture courtesy AP).
For instance, this was the opening paragraph of an AP piece published at 3:12 AM EDT Friday (emphasis added):
Senate Republicans on Friday blocked a global warming bill that would have required major reductions in greenhouse gases, pushing debate over the world's biggest environmental concern to next year for a new Congress and president.
Yet, this was how the AP saw it about twelve hours later (emphasis added):
Congress retreated Friday from the world's biggest environmental concern — global warming — in a fresh demonstration of what happens when nature and business collide, especially in an election year.
It was no contest.
A bill the Senate was debating would put a price on carbon emissions, targeting "greenhouse gases" that contribute to the warming that many scientists say could dramatically change the Earth.
Opponents wanted to talk about higher gasoline prices. And higher taxes.
That kind of talk spooks Washington.
Pretty neat, wouldn't you agree?
Of course, it will also be interesting to see how many press outlets address just how fractured the Democrats were on this issue, or if they buy into Sen. Barbara Boxer's (D-Cal.) nonsense.
For instance, on Friday, Boxer released the following statement (emphasis hers):
Today's vote is a landmark moment in the fight against global warming. We had 54 Senators come down on the side of tackling this crucial issue now -- because it is one of the greatest challenges of our generation. This strong vote is up from 38 votes in 2005, and proves that our nation is ready to assume the mantle of leadership on global warming.
That's interesting, because ten Senate Democrats on Friday sent the following letter to Boxer and Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) (emphasis added):
As Democrats from regions of the country that will be most immediately affected by climate legislation, we want to share our concerns with the bill that is currently before the Senate. We commend your leadership in attempting to address one the most significant threats to this and future generations; however, we cannot support final passage of the Boxer Substitute in its current form.
For the record, the ten senators signing this letter were: Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), Senator John D. Rockefeller (D-WV), Carl Levin (D-MI), Blanche Lincoln (D-AR), Mark Pryor (D-AR), Jim Webb (D-VA), Evan Bayh (D-IN), Clair McCaskill (D-MO), Sherrod Brown (D-OH), and Ben Nelson (D-NE).
I'm sure media will be diligently reporting the Democrat fracture concerning this bill in the days to come...not!

There's going to be another "Landmark"
June 7, 2008 - 11:42 ET by JayTeeAnd it is going to be a "Landmark VOTER Decision" coming in November.
The DC bubble is at work, these Dudes are Well insulated from the Real World....the statement "Global warming bill that would have REQUIRED major Reductions in Greenhouse Gases" is True...it would have "REQUIRED" but would NOT have "REDUCED".
If it's a WORLD problem (and it isn't) then the American Congress would have had to pass a World Requirement Bill. We DO HAVE a Severe GAS problem in Congress....it's beginning to Smell a lot like "Carbon Tax"...and the Voters know that Smell ....

I agree Noel

And I'm sure Britney Spears will be doing something very important around that time. (The blame-it-all-on-Bush story line has become as transparent as calling the bombing of an IED factory a mistaken attack on a Muslim wedding party).
Bad times for the NE
June 7, 2008 - 11:51 ET by NortoI see Senator Snowe in the picture above. I have done everything but get on my knees to these slugs. They just do not care about the US we know.
This winter in Maine if home heating even stops at $5 we will be lucky and that is over 1/3 of our SS if we use 1000 gallons.
The idea that Congress would allow this to continue is criminal and they should all be recalled! We are sitting on billions of barrels of crude and according to the latest science, more is being produced as we sit here.
I am, in a word, furious, but helpless. I have called, emailed, cajoled, you name it. Nothing but nonsense, and there is Snowe right in with those weasels. I have expected her to change parties for a long time. Boy, is this frustrating.

Well maybe not one of the greatest but it did squeak within the top 30.

June 7, 2008 - 12:20 ET by taterNoel slight typo there...Ben Nelson is a democrat from Nebraska, not Florida. I know because I've interviewed him a time or two while I've lived here. ;)

June 7, 2008 - 14:12 ET by fitzfongIf the candidates are smart, they'll avoid the Global Warming issue this year altogether. Given the current energy and economic circumstances, such an issue will be seen as the frivolous luxury that it is. Besides, like illegal immigration, the Republican and Democrat candidates are too alike in their approaches for either to draw distinctions.

GLOBAL WARMING...
June 7, 2008 - 19:29 ET by danybhoyfitzy,
They would be smart to avoid "global warming", but there are those that are so hellbent on this issue that they cannot help themselves. What is Al Whore spending on his ads with people like Sharpton & Robertson sitting on the couch costing? I heard something in the neighborhood of $30million for the whole setup.
What I have noticed is that when an issue is pushed by people with little or no control over themselves, they nuke their sides cause completely. Gay marriage hurt the Dems big in 2004, & it looks like it back this year, in Calfornia. Global Warming as an agenda is running out of time, because when the people find out how much it will cost them, even most libs will say NO. As for the progressive/marxist/ types, well they don't give a damn about America anyway. 1 world & 1 gov't would suit them fine.

June 7, 2008 - 14:15 ET by Wildcatter1980...to say that my junior senator, the honorable Sherrod Brown of Ohio, voted against cloture despite his--more likely his staff's--response to me being nothing but Democrat/global alarmist talking points such as citing the UNIPCC tissue of lies, er, report.
It is more likely he received a lot of union responses saying do not support a measure that will only hurt the working class types that make up a large portion of your constituents.
It will pass
June 7, 2008 - 15:26 ET by Jerry MackThis bill should be a red flag to all Americans of what to expect with a dim president and a dim majority in congress. Babs Boxer has said that she will bring it up again next year. It will be tweaked just enough to bring the above named dims on board. But it will pass.
Does it matter?
June 7, 2008 - 16:16 ET by NofDim or Rep does it really matter? Do you think Juan McCain would jump on this as well? Of course he will. He'd probably sign it if he won. Want to get another prespective on energy prices? take it for what its worth....

Republican senate majority
June 7, 2008 - 17:10 ET by Jerry MackA Republican senate majority would stop the bill. As for John McCain try this:
At one of the one on one debates between HRC and BHO, Barack was asked what he would do about high gas prices?
BHO(non-quote): "We must all sacrafice until alternative fuels are available."
HRC: "I Agree!"
McCain was asked the same question several days later by Greta Van S. He gave almost the same answer.
I have been writing about the necessity of producing our own oil for years. The real problem that people ignore is if our imported supplies are severly diminished by a terrorist attack in Saudi Arabia or elsewhere. Mexico which provies us 20%+- of our oil can not stop drug trafficers from killing their police officers and elected officials.
That's the Plan for America..Sacrifice ? that's called HOPE
June 7, 2008 - 17:46 ET by JayTeeLet's HOPE for Alternative Fuels ?
How about lets Acknowledge they ain't here yet, and with $1.50 a Gallon Subsidy on Ethanol, it ain't working on it's own...yet.
And the high gas prices are hurting the Poor more than the Rich, so much for Congress taking care of the Poor people.
When Al Gore was asked "What Percent of the atmosphere is CO 2 ?....and he refused to answer...I knew for sure that something was Wrong with the Global warming hype. If A politician is dodging Truth ....if he will not openly state a Number than can be looked up by any Idiot with a Computer and a Web connection...you know they are hiding something.
CO 2 content of the Atmosphere is STILL NOT a widely known number..it goes Un-published, MSM will not mention it as part of any Global warming story...It's a ridiculously low Number.......less than 1 Tenth of a %, measured in the thousanths of a decimal.
Al Gore and the MSM don't wanna mention it...it might cause skepticism........Questions......lack of faith.
The Republican Revolution will not be Televised
My references say .053%. Out
June 7, 2008 - 18:01 ET by ReaverMy references say .053%. Out of all the CO2 in the atmosphere about 6% is produced by human activity. This is such a non-issue. Atmospheric scientists rightly call CO2 a "trace gas".
The point is..you had to look it up..it's a hidden agenda/number
June 7, 2008 - 18:19 ET by JayTeeIf CO2 the Big Bad Global Warming Gas is SUCH A TERRIBLE Disaster...It should be on the Tip of your Tongue...we should get monthly updates on it's value..increase, decrease, etc...Sorta like Gas Prices.
But it's so "my nute" that Al Gore and Friends don't want to mention it. You might get "Informed" and start asking MORE questions they don't want to answer.
Since Hillary has dropped OUT of the Democratic Race....the CO 2 emissions should drop significantly.

Today, where I live
June 7, 2008 - 19:14 ET by JoggerNotIts 4.69 per gal of reg gas
We had a little price war going...
4.79 a gallon for two stations in town..
the third station in town was at 4.65 for a while.
Now, all at 4.69.
The same distributer delivers to most of the gas stations
within 150-200 miles.
I dont get it.
There is plenty of oil available we need to just let them get it

answer
June 7, 2008 - 19:18 ET by jaywlWhat is the word for a question that contains the answer also? Maybe questswer? Anyway, that is what that question is. Take the question's words, rearrange, and you can have "Republicans will be blamed for (Global Warming) (energy prices) (bill's failure) (global failure), take your pick.
Seriously, until our competitors get on the bandwagon we should not do anything except build nuclear, search and drill for oil, spend millions on clean coal research, and put a wind farm in Rezko's empty lot. Even if China and India join in the fun, the answer is still the same at least for the forseeable future. The most infuriating truth is that Reid, Pelosi, and ilk know Cap and Trade and related bull is just that, bullshit. None of them have the guts to tell the environuts to read a thermometer. They could have started with the idiots that rented a Russian icebreaker in May to see the melting arctic ice in the Northwest Passage. They got stuck for at least 7 days and had to be airlifted out!

Failure of this bill is great news
June 8, 2008 - 07:06 ET by ChiefE9Finally we have sanity in our Congress. It would tank our future economy, and raise the cost of gasoline and diesel fuel.
No wonder the Dem controlled Congress has a approval rating of only 18%.
Get more dems in Congress and you will see more looney bills terrible for America.
