The proprietor of Daily Kos must be very concerned with John McCain being able to beat Barack Obama in November, for Markos Moulitsas on Thursday actually stooped to picking on the color of the Arizona senator's teeth.
I kid you not.
The truly delicious denouement is that Kos's followers seem largely displeased with their leader wasting time with such a triviality when there are clearly larger issues at stake (h/t NBer lumpy):

This post is an embarrassment for DailyKos. There are hundreds of reasons to oppose McCain. The apparent color of his teeth in a bad photo is not one of them.

I don't care what his teeth look like. If he was a pacifist that supported social net programs and leading our society into an age of stewardship and compassion, he could have holes in his teeth for all I care.
The fact is that the Democrats are poised as the party in the stronger position this election cycle. Even if it werent' this would be tasteless and mean. But since it is, it's more than that. It's bullying. It's being exactly like Dick Cheney.
I have not intention of supporting a party that wants to imitate the RovChenians. There is no excuse for KOS to have this juvenile disrespectful blather. This is excruciatingly disappointing.

Indeed, there are far too many important issues at hand for anyone to be picking on things like this. I have been disillusioned with the Democratic Party for years now (for slightly different reasons than the average NBer, I'm fairly sure), and I too will completely disown it if this is the level of discourse too which media outlets and Democrats stoop in the coming months.
Maintain a little integrity, Dems. You're on thin ice as it is.

And your update is also a great point. How often have they complained about the cheap shots against Bush? The difference now is probably due to two reasons first, they don't think that McCain really has a good chance against Obama and second the MSM hasn't given legitimacy yet to these kind of attacks on him. If and when it appears that he could be catching Obama, Hollywood, the MSM, all the Dem establishment and most of their supporters will be condoning this kind of stuff.
The supporters need more time to be brainwashed against McCain. Brainwashing doesn't happen over night. Many of them still see him as a different kind of Republican. There won't be enough time to vilify him as strongly as they have Bush, that kind takes years, not months. If McCain some how pulls out a win (very unlikely) then he'll get the full treatment.

They have consistently resorted to everything from simple mudlsinging, to ambulance-chasing (i.e. finding a tragedy to use for sympathy publicity - Paul Wellstone was a master at that) all the way up to false criminal accusations.
They invented the October Surprise, ballot-stuffing, poll-hopping, scandal-mongering, vote-buying, etc. They have perfected the art of demonizing their opposition to the point where "pro-life" equals misogyny, and that being a racist is a requirement to being a republican - even though it was the republicans who freed the slaves and it was the democrats who implemented the Jim Crow laws, and MLK was a registered republican....
Admittedly, republicans have used this stuff too, albeit to a far far lesser degree, but the Dems invented it, and with the help of the MSM, they usually get away with it.
The perfect example of this is the Willie Horton ad controversy. Al Gore originated it for use against Dukakis in the 1988 primary, Bush merely picked up on it. But, even though a Democrat started it, only the Republicans were criticized, and labeled as racists for doing it.
And who could forget the Daisy Cutter Ad of 1964, created by none other than that paragon of journalistic integrity Bill Moyers?
This is not rare or isolated, it's typical.
I know this is a long post, but a book could be written about this topic. It's too bad the GOP is so friggin inept at PR or maybe the general mindset of the public wouldn't be so against them. Of course they have the MSM and the education system to contend with, not just the opposing party.

George Washington seemed to do just fine with wooden teeth and I'm sure many of our past presidents didn't have sparkling teeth and fresh minty breath like Markos does.

I do think it's great that so many people were turned off by it. Then there are the ones who agreed with it. I don't know if I want to laugh or cry after reading some of their posts. One talking about how good looking Obama is (puke) or how McCain is a nasty grandpa...something like that. Obama is so qualified because he is good looking, McCain must not be qaulified to be president because he can't take care of his teeth. How bad his campaign is because they didn't whiten his teeth and on and on. I would like to ask a lot of these people at KOS if this is a presidential election or American Idol???
