Former senator and presidential candidate Bob Dole sent an angry e-mail message to Scott McClellan Thursday calling the former White House press secretary a "miserable creature" for publishing his recent tell-all book about the Bush administration.
In his message, Dole claimed McClellan was typical of folks "in every administration who don't have the guts to speak up or quit if there are disagreements with the boss or colleagues. No, your type soaks up the benefits of power, revels in the limelight for years, then quits, and spurred on by greed, cashes in with a scathing critique."
Despite the focus given this book last week, many major news organizations completely ignored Dole's comments which were first revealed by Politico Friday, and widely disseminated hours later by UPI. Yet, from what I can tell, ABC, CBS, NBC, the New York Times, and USA Today have all ignored the matter.
What follows is the entire e-mail message published by Fox News.com Friday (h/t NBer motherbelt, picture courtesy Politico):
Scott,
There are miserable creatures like you in every administration who don't have the guts to speak up or quit if there are disagreements with the boss or colleagues. No, your type soaks up the benefits of power, revels in the limelight for years, then quits, and spurred on by greed, cashes in with a scathing critique.
In my nearly 36 years of public service I've known of a few like you. No doubt you will "clean up" as the liberal anti-Bush press will promote your belated concerns with wild enthusiasm. When the money starts rolling in you should donate it to a worthy cause, something like, "Biting The Hand That Fed Me." Another thought is to weasel your way back into the White House if a Democrat is elected. That would provide a good set up for a second book deal in a few years.
I have no intention of reading your "exposé" because if all these awful things were happening, and perhaps some may have been, you should have spoken up publicly like a man, or quit your cushy, high profile job. That would have taken integrity and courage but then you would have had credibility and your complaints could have been aired objectively. You're a hot ticket now but don't you, deep down, feel like a total ingrate?
BOB DOLE
For the record, CNN did several reports about this on Friday, while MSNBC did two.
The Associated Press has now chimed in days after it was first revealed. It will be interesting to see if others follow now that the largest wire service in the world has reported it.
Stay tuned.

Good morning Noel
June 2, 2008 - 09:40 ET by shawn228First of all congratulations to Brandon, you must be very proud. Will he be spending summer with you in Bay Area?
2nd, I saw this story mentioned on the msm networks, but why would it be so newsworthy a conservative ex senator calling the former press secretary a mean name and a few other accusations? The present press secretary and Karl Rove didn't agree with it either and that got reported.

June 2, 2008 - 10:11 ET by Noel Sheppardshawn,
He's a former presidential candidate and highly-respected former senator. Furthermore, the reactions from folks like Rove and Perino are not that surprising, as one is still in the adminstration, and one has strong ties. By contrast, as Dole was never part of the administration, his sentiments could be seen as more impartial.
Beyond which, the tenor of his criticism went well beyond the others, wouldn't you agree?
As for Brandon, he's staying in Lincoln to train and get ready for next year. Their training facilities are UNBELIEVABLE. Honestly, you can't imagine their workout rooms. He'll have a trainer there, and be able to continue off-season jump practices.

Two quick hits
June 2, 2008 - 18:30 ET by UnsaneFirst, can either you or Noel explain why SFO is such a lousy airport? Really, why do I or anyone else have to go through security again after clearing security elsewhere because we have to go to another terminal? (This happened when I arrived at the International terminal and had to go to Terminal 3 when returning from YVR on Saturday.) And perhaps SFO can make it so people can actually access the Internet via wi-fi? I did that at SAT with no problems; I just paid a $3 and some-odd change fee...and at YVR, the access was free.
Second: to go back on topic: shawn, I first heard these comments and thought they were much to do about nothing until I heard them coming from Bob Dole. As Noel points out, he was a respected Senator from KS for many years, and a former presidential candidate...AND is not know for such scathing comments. I have always found him to be more reserved and even gentlemanly in his disagreements with others. These comments not only have a sense of impartiality, they are also out of character, IMHO, for Dole.

McClellan - a miserable ...
June 2, 2008 - 10:10 ET by Gary HallWell, Bob was close - but I called McClellan a "miserable suck," first. I'd imagine that the good Senator was simply trying to one-up me by adding a little class - "miserable creature."
I see that Senator Dole also referred to McClellan as a "total ingrate." Now that sounds a bit familiar. As Noel noted the other day, Flashback: Press Didn't Like Tell-all Books About President Clinton, as the MSM is want to do when a Democrat leaves a D(ic) administration and does their money grabbing tattle tale, it's the MSM that usually attacks the "turncoat," as Katic Couric (then an NBC embarrassment) called George Stephanopoulos. And over at CBS, "Mark McEwen said the author was being called a "backstabber" and an "ingrate." Oh, there was that label, "ingrate."
Noel, no wonder the MSM laid low - had they come out and reported that Senator Dole referred to McClellan as an "ingrate," folks searching for who else might have labeled another as such, just might have uncovered what we all understand about our MSM.

June 2, 2008 - 10:34 ET by Gat New YorkI think Dole said what many of us which others had said.
I saw McClellan on Meet The Press and I was hoping that Russert would follow through on his initial questioning regarding how much this book changed from his initial proposal - but unfortunately Russert allowed his initial answer, which was weak, to stand.
This little man was fired because he was very incompetent and should never have had that position to begin with. Clearly he holds grudges and was convinced to get even.
I think this will be a story that will disappear very quickly since there is no new information there.
Yes, my first impression
June 2, 2008 - 11:06 ET by Ten7sYes, my first impression upon hearing of McClellan's book was that he's just an opportunist. And I hope he's happy with his money b/c he no longer has any friends. As a turncoat neither side respects or trusts him, and I don't see how he could respect himself.

June 2, 2008 - 13:24 ET by bigtimerOf course the msm has been mainly silent about this...they are leftists...it doesn't matter one wit to them what a former Senator and Presidential candidate has to say here...he is the enemy in their eyes....if they don't report this, it just never happened, it matters not.
For me it has been somewhat infuriating as Dole was dead on with his email to Scottie...and I hope it stung the sleaze-bag somewhat, if he has a soul left to be stung that is.

June 2, 2008 - 13:50 ET by HelenSI praise God, literally, for the internet and the ability - through sites like this one - to get the other side of the story out to the country.
(...I'll give a moment for those offended by my use of the word "God" to get over themselves..." OK? Moving right along.)
If it weren't for the trend toward online news sources that more people frequent than we can ever know, so much of the MSM drivel would go unchallenged and the other side totally unknown.

June 2, 2008 - 14:15 ET by Chris NormanHelen, The internet has broken the media's monopoly of spoonfeeding us the news and, for that, they hate sites like this. I maintain that, in the past, they were able to create almost a "virtual reality", where - under Republicans, the country suffered through only hard times and despair, while - under Democrat rule, benefitted greatly from their all their liberal programs. They have more trouble maintaining that "reality" now - and they can't stand it. They also have more trouble throwing elections, through distorted campaign coverage.
