WaPo Gives Obama 'Three Pinocchios' for Uncle Liberated Auschwitz Gaffe

Photo of Noel Sheppard.

The Washington Post's "Fact Checker" blog has given Democrat presidential candidate Barack Obama three Pinocchios (significant factual error and/or obvious contradiction) for his bogus claim that one of his uncles helped liberate the Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz.

This is down from the four Pinocchios (whopper!) fact checker Michael Dobbs originally gave the junior senator from Illinois for his Memorial Day misstatement reported by NewsBusters just hours ago.

As Dobbs accurately noted (emphasis added, picture courtesy Washington Post):

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Auschwitz is located in southern Poland, near the city of Krakow. It was liberated by the Red Army on January 27, 1945. At the time, U.S. armies were still on the western borders of Germany, a thousand miles away, regrouping after the Battle of the Bulge. The Americans had not even crossed the Rhine at this point.

The Obama campaign now says that Obama was referring to his great-uncle on his mother's side, and the camp in question was not Auschwitz, but Ohrdruf, which was part of the Buchenwald camp system in Lower Saxony [Germany]. Ohrdruf was the first camp to be liberated by the Americans on April 4, 1945, and it was visited a week later by Generals Eisenhower, Patton, and Bradley. Eisenhower later wrote to his wife that he "never dreamed that such cruelty, bestiality and savagery could really exist in this world." [...]

Granted, it is getting late in the campaign. The candidates are tired, and prone to making silly mistakes. Many Americans might have problems distinguishing Buchenwald and Ohrdruf from Auschwitz. But should we not expect more from a Harvard-educated presidential candidate? Is it too much to ask that an aspiring commander-in-chief knows (1) that Auschwitz (like many of the other Nazi death camps) is in Poland, and (2) that the eastern advance of the U.S. Army in World War II stopped on the river Elbe? Let me know what you think.

The Pinocchio Test

Before hearing from the Obama campaign, I gave the candidate four Pinocchios for this howler. I am subtracting one Pinocchio in view of the explanation that Obama confused the two concentration camps and that the underlying story was accurate. Three Pinocchios for "significant factual errors."

I'm sorry, Mike, but I've got to disagree with your decision to subtract a Pinocchio. After all, referring to Ohrdruf as Auschwitz is like a fisherman telling his grandson the snapper he caught on a recent fishing trip was a marlin!

Other than these camps being in different countries, let's understand that Auschwitz was the largest Nazi concentration, and possessed the following almost unimaginable statistics (emphasis added):

The Auschwitz concentration camp complex was the largest of its kind established by the Nazi regime. It included three main camps, all of which deployed incarcerated prisoners at forced labor. One of them also functioned for an extended period as a killing center. The camps were located approximately 37 miles west of Krakow, near the prewar German-Polish border in Upper Silesia, an area that Nazi Germany annexed in 1939 after invading and conquering Poland. The SS authorities established three main camps near the Polish city of Oswiecim: Auschwitz I in May 1940; Auschwitz II (also called Auschwitz-Birkenau) in early 1942; and Auschwitz III (also called Auschwitz-Monowitz) in October 1942. [...]

In total, approximately 1.1 million Jews were deported to Auschwitz. SS and police authorities deported approximately 200,000 other victims to Auschwitz, including 140,000-150,000 non-Jewish Poles, 23,000 Roma and Sinti (Gypsies), 15,000 Soviet prisoners of war, and 25,000 others (Soviet civilians, Lithuanians, Czechs, French, Yugoslavs, Germans, Austrians, and Italians). [...]

At least 960,000 Jews were killed in Auschwitz. Other victims included approximately 74,000 Poles, 21,000 Roma (Gypsies), and 15,000 Soviet prisoners of war; and 10,000-15,000 members of other nationalities (Soviet civilians, Czechs, Yugoslavs, French, Germans, and Austrians).

Let's compare this to Ohrdruf (emphasis added):

Created in November 1944 near the town of Gotha, Germany, Ohrdruf supplied forced labor in the form of concentration camp prisoners for railway construction leading to a proposed communications center, which was never completed due to the rapid American advance. In late March 1945, the camp had a prisoner population of some 11,700, but in early April the SS evacuated almost all the prisoners on death marches to Buchenwald. The SS guards killed many of the remaining prisoners who were too ill to walk to the railcars.

With all due respect, Mr. Dobbs, Ohrdruf had a population of 11,700 prisoners while the gas chambers of Auschwitz killed 1 million innocent people. Comparing the two is an insult to mankind.

As such, I think you ought to add TWO Pinocchios for this disgraceful whopper by Obama.

Unfortunately, it seems likely mainstream media will use similar disgusting tactics to protect St. Obama from the scrutiny this incident deserves.

How sad.

Noel,I think this is one

Noel,

I think this is one guy's attempt to give himself cover on the charge of being too soft on Obama - and a pretty thin cover it is. The rest of the time, I'm sure he will, like the majority of the media, function as an "air bag" for Obama.

So, even when a member of

So, even when a member of the MSM isn't being biased, they're still biased.

Gee Balboa, you tell me, if

Gee Balboa, you tell me, if someone is biased 99 out of 100 times, does the one time make him not biased? Wait, in your world of media sunshine and lollipops you'll probably say "yes".

Eactly Chris - Volume and scope mean nothing to them

One criticism for one day of a liberal is the same as 100 front page stories for days on end from thousands of media outlets.

The point was that even when

The point was that even when an article is written that is critical of a liberal, it's not really being critical, and the writer is really just "covering."

I know balboa and I'd call 1 story vs 100's - covering

It's obvious you don't see a distinction.
Of course the media are going to have to do some negative stories on Obama. They can't get away with absolutely none.

I would see a distinction if

I would see a distinction if I knew anything about this particular writer. And I don't buy into the whole conspiracy of the liberal MSM. Liberal? Sure. Conspiracy? Nah.

I agree Balboa

their is no MSM conspiracy...

it's just the way they are... it's like saying almost all kids like ice cream... it's just a fact...

Obviously their collective intelligence wouldn't lend itself to a conspiracy.. they just couldn't do it..

But,, most being graduates of the same liberal POS schools and employees of the the same liberal types of bosses..

It might appear to be a conspiracy but,, no... it's just the way it is.

As much as I hate to

I agree with Balboa here. Yes, we all know that the press is liberal and biased....just ask Hitlery. But let's give them credit where credit is due. If they want to give them three "Pinochios" for Obama's lies....I'll give them one golden Lenin for reporting it!

Jeff Lebowski

It's nice that you guys agree with balboa - His straw man

arguments are easy to agree with. Neither Chris nor I said that their was a conspiracy. I have said many many times (and balboa knows it) that their is no conspiracy.

Good job Balboa! Those Straw men really work.

A straw man is a straw man

A straw man is a straw man is a straw man

I agree with Chris and Dee

1 out of 100 isn't enough to convince me

I think that ensures that

I think that ensures that even if Roger Ailes takes over all news divisions in America, it still won't be enough.

By the same token, I'm sure

By the same token, I'm sure if Howard Dean was delivering the news, you'd on come on here and protest those comments accusing him of being biased. You'd want to give him the benefit of the doubt you'd say there is.

Nope. If Howard Dean was

Nope. If Howard Dean was delivering the news, it would be a horrible business and journalistic decision. There would be no way you could argue the merits of his editorial decisions.

If ifs and buts were candy and nuts

balboa would be as big as a Bus

This is what we

need to look at...the trivial BS..it was a great uncle and the story was pasted down...How many have found the location or details of our beloved ancestors memories do not go with the history,,,

NON issue except perhaps by little Wolfie at CNN.

Exactly, they don't want

Exactly, they don't want their bias to be too obvious, so once in a while they throw in a few items not necessarily favorable to their cause, but not seriously unfavorable, so they can always say "see that? I'm not biased" and then continue on with their deceptive pretense of objectivity - which is the essence of bias.

FOXNEWS

Fox News reports that Obama had a distant relative who may have been involved in liberating another camp.  Obama's campaign is trying to say he is confused.

Well which is it, it it his

Well which is it, is it, his grandfather, great-grandfather, or uncle? Which one of his relatives supposedly liberated the concentration camp? What's next his fathers, mothers, sisters brother. All in all his misspeak sounds like a whopper to me.

The Whoppers told were

Ms. clinton's...snipers, June conclusion, her CV, and all the rest.

Right Noel - Auschwitz is the most famous concentration camp

out there and the fact that Obama didn't know about it's liberation is bad enough, but there is no way that he would mistake some tiny unknown camp for Auschwitz.

He was either naming it to make his story sound better, or doesn't really know that much about his Uncle and is just using him for a story, or it was just complete fabrication. In any scenario - it's a Gaff. A bad one, especially when trying to claim favor with Jewish people.

That was my thought too

That was my thought too Dee...he used Auschwitz because it's the famous one.

The WaPo writer says shouldn't we expect more from a Harvard grad? My question is shouldn't someone know their own family's history and participation in the war better than that, nevermind history books? He could have just said " a concentration camp."

This is another "embroidering" of his past to make a good story, like his claim that his mother and father got together because of the march in Selma (5 years before it happened).

He's like a little kid who embellishes his stories in order to make them more exciting.

Obama's the Gaffe

Obama's the Gaffe Guzzler.

And just like the daily rise in gas, we're going to see a daily rise in gaffes.

At some point the dam has to break. Even this media, at this time, cannot ignore this pattern forever.

Can they?

Vote 4 change. Vote 4 anything. See Jack & Mr Shy's first campaign ad for the ONLY viable 3rd party candidate.

Gaffe Guzzler -that's a good one Jack

They will keep ignoring, until it makes such big news on blogs that they can't.

Gaffe Guzzler = classic!

And I know for me, personally, that I can't afford a Gaffe Guzzler.

Jack, this is

stupid....Why do the posters worry about misspeaks and minor issues...We are in a long ugly war, gas is $4.oo a gallon, millions do not have healthcare, we are failing to educate our children, and we have immigration problems.

This is trivia!

Trivia?

Trivia? You think Obama's "gaffs" are just trivia? Are you claiming that we shouldn't care if prospective presidents can't even get their own family history straight? That they can't remember world history? That they can't even remember just how many states there are?

The presidency is one of the most important position in the world. I don't want someone who makes up a family history, or can't ever seem to get the "facts" straight, as our president, do you?

Why do the posters worry

Why do the posters worry about misspeaks and minor issues

Because the issue of a gaffe is not minor if it is a lie made up on teh spot or even worse caculated, like the Uncle liberating Auswich or his parents getting together after his birth or 57 states.  It is not teh one gaffe or even all of them it is teh problem with his patriotism the totatlitly of teh package, a package rotting on teh shelves way past its expiration date.

Gas almost doubled under a democrat controlled congress, and congress makes the laws not the President.  Ditto with the education of teh children, except that is done on a local level and teh Feds have little input ... or should.  And teh healthcare problem is overstated as anyone repeat anyone can go to any government hospital and get treatment now.  And yes the Dem weanies have fought against closing the borders.

In short the Dems are at fault.

Nuke em til they glow then shoot em in the dark.

We are in a long, ugly war

We are in a long, ugly war because a spineless President repeatedly failed to respond adequately to a sequence of attacks by a loose collection of Islamic Jihadists until they finally killed 3000 people and destroyed $$ billions in property here in the US.

Gas is $4 a gallon because a bunch of liberal politicians in Washington and other seats of government have steadfastly denied oil companies license to produce more oil.

Millions do not have healthcare because there is not enough healthcare available to satisfy the demand for Healthcare. Millions receive free healthcare who did not work or earn the privilege. Millions of others who did work and earned at least something are denied heathcare because the government expropriated what they earned in order to award it to those who did not.

Children are not educated because the liberal nincompoops from the NEA and AFT are both in control of the educational system and more intent on fattening teacher salaries and benefits than they are in obtaining measureable educational results.

We have "immigration" problems because we lack the intestinal fortitude to use force up to and including deadly force where necessary to keep these invaders out at the border.  We further lack the resolve and fortitude to round up and swiftly deport all the illegals we find in the country.  Last, we have the poor judgement not to amend the Constitution to eliminate "anchor babies".  A simple change really.   "natural born or naturalized ..." --> "natural born of a mother who is a citizen of the United States at or naturalized ...".

I think this was deliberate

I think this was deliberate on Obama's part, almost pandering to us, assuming that a) since most American's know Auschwitz as synonymous with evil, so we'd react more strongly to that, and b) heck, who's going to check into it very closely.

Maybe a few in the media are starting to get a little annoyed by the "in the tank for Obama" tag they've been getting of late.

americans liberated Ohrdruf

I'm curious whether this is a contradiction.  In the beginning of the article it says the Americans liberated Ohrdruf April 4, 1945.  Near the end it says the SS evacuated them to Buchenwald and set them on a "death march" at the same time.  If I've learned this part of history, it's slipped my mind.  Would anyone care to clarify this to me?

I'd even consider it an honest mistake on Obama's part to confuse Auschwitz and Ohrdruf.  Even if he knew better, it's easier to relate to the audience using a well known name with disturbingly negative connotation.  However, I still don't appreciate his parading distant branches on his family tree in some respects while trimming unwanted ones off (racist grandmother *coughcough*)

Because Ohrdruf is a

Because Ohrdruf is a sub-camp of Buchenwald.  They are part of the same system of 174 camps. The two sites were only about 50 Km apart.  Also, neither Ohrdruf nor Buchenwald itself have the gassing and crematoria mass murder facilities of Auschwitz.  All the murder done there was of the conventional sort, shooting, poisoning, beatings, etc., etc.

"Even if he knew better,

"Even if he knew better, it's easier to relate to the audience using a well known name with disturbingly negative connotation."

Saying "concentration camp" is sufficient for effect.  Adding false information in this context, for personal gain, is reprehensible.

If he wasn't sure, and his hesitations in speech suggests he was "thinking" on his feet, then he should have kept his yapper shut.

In one false self-serving sentence he denigrates WWII former Soviet servicemen.  I guarantee the Russians will not be forgiving if Obama becomes president.  He will be seen as a bigger creampuff than Kennedy.

RRAM Tough!

Where is the richeous

Where is the richeous indignation for daring to mention the Holocaust in the first place? Oh, that's reserved for conservatives.

Barry on Drugs?????

Anyone else see this???

I'm not saying it's so but it is food for thought.

Why Obama Deserves No Quarter On This

Obama has written TWO books in which he has, alledgedly, meticulously documented his life and his family history.  These books, which obviously were written to promote his political avarice - to become POTUS - have been cited numerous times by the candidate and the fawning press.  Obama often talks of his family, sharing his recollections and observations in order to humanize himself and connect with citizens.  And he has not been afraid to debase and sacrifice his flesh and blood to demonstrate he is an "honest" guy ... that is, as long as they were the caucasion relatives.

And much has been ballyhooed about Obama's education and intelligence.  Even Hillary superior intellect (vomit) was not deified this much by the MSM.

Combining these two factual components, penning the events and people of his life and his intellect, one would think Obama would know, at least, what his uncle did in WWII, at least to know it wasn't Auschwitz.  Afterall, his TWO books were all about Obama and his relatives.  [McCain has written five books (by my quick count) and the Press says nothing.]

But a problem exists.  Obama's genealogical search was an expidition into his "blackness" more than about his entire family tree, black and white.

Obama's own words define his obsession beginning at least in his teen years with determing his "blackness" by searching out the most "authentic" black experiences he could find.  As a teen he watched television and movies to emulate black characterizations since Hawaii did not offer "authentic" black role models.  Obama moved to California for college because he thought it would offer even more "authentic" black experiences.  He then moved to New York to attend Columbia and be in Harlem because it surely would afford him the most "authentic" black experience.  Exactly how Harvard fit into the black experience is unclear, but I am positive Obama, never one to not capitalize on an opportunity, knew that Harvard would be another springboard to help catapult him closer to his lifelong obsession - POTUS.  (Afterall, Obama didn't refuse to go to the nearly all-white exclusive Hawaiian prep school so he could be closer to his public school "peeps", did he?)

Being able to write his own ticket after Harvard - clerking for a Supreme Court Justice or attach to a high power law firm - and then not doing just that was a smart choice for someone desirous of the Presidency.  Not many high power attorneys or judges become president in the modern era.  Someone who does grass roots work and then climbs up the ladder is a shoe-in as Liberal candidate.

But the issue today is how could Obama bungle the uncle at Auschwitz story:

  1. He was too busy figuring out his "blackness" to pay attention to or recognize his entire family history, let alone include them in his books.

  2. Intelligent or not, he will say nearly anything to anyone to garner votes and money. (Conceived because of a ML King march, never heard his preacher speak that way, will/won't dissociate from Wright, we don't have that technology to make the Hillary 1984 commercial, 10000 dead from Kansas tornadoes, clinging to guns and religion, Tony Rezko who?, William Ayres who?, granny was a racist, Iran isn't but is a grave threat, meet without precondition with despots as did Roosevelt, Truman, Kennedy, Nixon, "sweetie", etc.)

  3. He's confident the MSM will cover his ass.

  4. If the heat gets turned up too hot on his BS, he will proclaim he was tired, misinformed or betrayed by someone else (not his fault) and/or throw someone else under the bus and the MSM will let it go.

RRAM Tough!

so, is this obama's not-so-subtle way of admitting ...

he's a communist w/ family ties to stalin's red army?

I don't know about his

I don't know about his family ties, but I'm convinced he is a Communist!

"Abstain from McCain"

Not ready for prime time.

If the facts, as they are now being presented, are correct, Obama has every right to be proud of a great-uncle that liberated the concentration camps.  The fact that he mentioned Auschwitz just goes to show he heard the stories but didn't listen very carefully.  He should have gotten his facts straight.

To me, this is and will be Obama's big problem, and why he's not ready for prime time.  He thinks he knows more than he does and, once those debates roll around, it's going to be open mouth, insert foot time.

we must all remember to give the Senator a little slack on such things as American history, geography, his own genealogy, etc. It is sooo hard being the anointed one, the one we have been waiting for. His friends in the media know this is the last chance for our deliverence, they too have been waiting. He is the one, but as Kermit said: It is hard being green.
