Here's something you don't see every day: a female member of the media blaming the sexism and misogyny in the presidential campaign on liberal Democrats, liberal bloggers, and Barack Obama supporters.
Yet, that's what occurred Sunday morning when syndicated columnist Marie Cocco was invited on CNN's "Reliable Sources" to discuss the role sexism and misogyny have played in this election cycle.
Fasten those seatbelts tightly, for you're about to enter an alternate reality (picture courtesy Washington Post Writers Group):
Well, this is amplified on the Internet, which may not be the broadcast media, but, but it is part of the media of this campaign. And if you went to the Internet, you know we all know about the false Muslim e-mails that go around about Barack Obama. But if you ever saw the language, the vulgarity, the vitriol that is hurled at Hillary Clinton by liberal Democrats, by the liberal blogs, largely by, frankly, Obama supporters, you'd be appalled. I mean, you'd punish your children for this.
As it appears that sexism and misogyny are now going to be blamed for Hillary's failure, will media be as honest about the causes and the sources as Cocco?
Stay tuned.

1) If you don't vote for Hillary, you are a sexist.
2) If you don't vote for Obama, you are a racist.
That's what happens when you play victim identity politics.
She's exactly right
May 25, 2008 - 12:10 ET by Dee BunkThe Obama supporters are the most vile of all. Dems use Sexism, racism, homophobia all the time unfairly against Republicans and Republicans never fight back with it. You can see why. Even if a previously lauded person like Hillary does it, it's suddenly "dirty tricks" when it never was before.
The "racism" dirty trick isn't a dirty trick because it supports their candidate of the moment.
Surprise, Surprise
May 25, 2008 - 11:39 ET by expatriotWell Hills, how do you like them apples? Are you the pot or are you the kettle.
Count on the dhimmicrats to use their own sexist, racist, homophobic beliefs and extend those feelings to the rest of us.
and it goes without saying.. after Hillary is gone
May 25, 2008 - 12:08 ET by Gary Halland it goes without saying.. after Hillary is gone:
And the Obama supporters will be joined by the Clinton supporters. One must wonder if a lone brave soul like Marie Cocco will be able to find her voice and her way into CNN come the fall campaign, to report on how pathetic all of this is will have become, from the same folks, against McCain?

May 25, 2008 - 12:21 ET by celatorThere are no doubt whole colonies of busy Obama and Hillary "opposition research" agitprops drooling at the chance to combine forces against McCain. It would be interesting to see their talking point decision trees, i.e., we'll say this and if McCain answers in such and such a way, then we'll counter with thus and such. What a sad way to make a living.
It's from the top, oelator..
May 25, 2008 - 12:45 ET by Gary HallIt's from the top, oelator.. DNC pores over agencies’ records for dirt on McCain.
Some how, I suspect that the NY Times, WaPost, LATimes, the Networks, etc., just never got around to highlighting that story. The obvious truths must never become common knowledge. (;~> gary
Yep, it is. Just finished
May 25, 2008 - 13:58 ET by celatorYep, it is. Just finished listening to Russert's "Meet The Mess" on radio. They are sharpening their knives and coming after MCain in a more focused way.
The panel (Dowd, Broder, Kearns etc) were parotting most of the same talking points as the DNC. They were slicing up McCain along the "bad temper/not a nice guy/mean spirited" DNC criticisms. Painted a VERY gloomy picture of him.
They were talking about Obama in the nicest possible manner, i.e., he's unique, nice, smart etc etc etc. Someone started describing how Obama parted the Red Sea at one time and saved a whole bunch of people from some bad guys, but one of the saner panelists stopped him.
I'm sure they think no one noticed their technique. If I had the time I would do a content analysis of the comments of the panel. But I already know the results. ;+}
Exactly Gary!!!
May 25, 2008 - 12:25 ET by Dee BunkIt will never happen. In fact the opposite will happen.
I'm just hoping that there are a few Democrats out there that are smart enough to realize what has happened and how bias the media really is. Maybe they will start thinking a little differently about all the hate spewed against Republicans.
I seriously doubt that Cocco will be one of them
Dee - won't happen
May 25, 2008 - 12:41 ET by Gary HallIndeed. It will not. The handful of folks who caught the clip today, are only a handful of folks. Even if this might get caught in a brief moment of media attention (unlikely), it would be gone and forgot in a moments notice. The MSM isn't likely to think about much else, other than how to focus on and how to present every angle of the "news and views" required to get Obama (whoever the D(ic) nominee is) elected. Cocco gets it wrong . . .
May 25, 2008 - 12:17 ET by Galvanic"As it appears that sexism and misogyny are now going to be blamed for Hillary's failure, will media be as honest about the causes and the sources as Cocco?"
In fact, they discussed her comments on Meet The Press today, and offered these . . .
1. Hillary won far more non-college educated white male Democrats than Obama. (Does it mean they are more racist than sexist?)
2. She's been elected to the junior Senate seat in New York -- a state she'd had residence in less than two months, and re-elected.
3. She began the campaign with a quarter of a billion dollars in her warchest, more than all the male opponents combined.
4. Hillary has historically painted her grand failures (i.e. HillaryCare) with the anti-female brush. As the insufferable Maureen Dowd pointed out, she hurts feminism in general by hiding behind the "Sexism!" charge rather than accepting that her ideas (or she herself) are rejected.
And I add these . . .
Despite the legendary prowess and savvy of the Clinton political machine, she ran one of the most inept campaigns in modern politics.
- She wrote of competing in the caucus states. When she had so much more $$$ than Obama early on, why did they not contest everywhere? Had she crushed Obama in Iowa and then won New Hampshire (which she did), he probably would've faded away.
- Her plan apparently called for locking up the big states -- California, New York, et al -- but in a proportional-awarding of delegates, that's not enough. In her hubris back in January, she announced that the nomination would be decided by February 5th; ooops!
- No matter how carefully her campaign restricted her exposure to hostile questions and crowds early on, the ol' Hillary occasionally leaked through. The "Snipers of Tuzla" fairy tale, for instance, really did hurt her. Combined with her husbands miscues, they reminded us of the lying and obstructionism that characterized her husband's Administration.
Bill & Hillary's assertions of sexism -- and those of their puppets -- are to persuade Democrats that she didn't lose because her campaign was inexcusably weak or she herself unexceptable, but because she's a woman. She thus avoids the "Loser" label if Obama loses in November, and she runs again in 2012.
One wonders how the
May 25, 2008 - 12:26 ET by celatorOne wonders how the smartest person who ever lived ran one of the worst political campaigns in American history. This is a campaign without coherency. It made an endless series of mistakes about talking points, timing, financing, focus, effective use of resources. An amazing meltdown almost from the beginning.
Taps for HRC's campaign
May 25, 2008 - 19:19 ET by GalvanicYou're right. There was nothing original about their campaign themes, and they didn't do their homework.
Personally, I think she's proven that she is too-flawed, and her own hubris (and that of her sycophants) has led to her demise.
Democrats never lose.
May 25, 2008 - 12:29 ET by MidAmericaDemocrats never lose. They can't possibly lose because they are the mainstream of America. When they don't win elections it's because of things like Republican dirty tricks (i.e. swiftboating), voter suppression, they couldn't get their message out, stolen elections(i.e. Bush v. Gore) or one of my favorite excuses... right wing bias in the media.

The Lady Is Sick!
May 25, 2008 - 12:48 ET by RedphillyThe truth is that Hillary is a liar. She said that Bill stayed in until June and that was a lie. It has been broadcast on other channels. How can we believe anything she says? She lies and knows she is lying and it is as though she has a mental problem. She needs prayer. The bible says, as does Hagee, that we are not mentioned in the bible as being here as a nation. If Hillary becomes president, I could see how that could happen! She could make an enemy country so angry they might destroy us. I am afraid of her and what she could do if she is empowered. She didn't care about Ted by making a remark about his brother and also during the Memorial Day holiday. She is angry because he endorsed Obama. He probably did because he knows the real Hillary. This is something that we are beginning to find out also. People who think she just made a slip of the tongue are naive. Her answer was well thought out and calculated.
I watched most of the show
May 25, 2008 - 15:36 ET by bigtimerI watched most of the show this morning and caught this segment...I was pleasantly surprised for a change...plus what she said about the left blogosphere regarding their vitriolic hatred towards Hillary is true....nothing like those kind, compassionate, love your fellow man leftists are there...heheheee

I think they missed something in their analysis
May 25, 2008 - 18:07 ET by mom_roxI watched this show as well, and the all-female guest panelists correctly portrayed how Hillary has been treated (they gave examples of Randi Rhodes' comments and Laura Ingraham playing the Wicked Witch music), but missed the point on why.
I don't believe it's due to us being a misogynistic society, but rather it's because Hillary is the candidate - she carries very unique campaign baggage. (Many on the left are noticing the negatives for the first time because of their infatuation with Obama.) I don't recall Carole Moseley Braun or Elizabeth Dole getting this level of treatment. Nor do I think Senators Mary Landrieu or Kay Bailey Hutchison would be treated in this manner either.
