For several months, NewsBusters has been reporting the new horror movie genre "Global Warming's Gonna Kill You!"
Entering the fray is M. Night Shyamalan, the writer/director of 1999's smash hit "The Sixth Sense."
Set to open coincidentally on Friday, June 13, "The Happening" is Shyamalan's move "to milk global warming for all the terror and despair it's worth."
So say USA Today's "Weather Guys" (emphasis added, trailer embedded right):
Shyamalan's new global-warming-inspired film The Happening will open in theaters globally Friday the 13th of June. It sounds like the run-of-the-mill apocalypse movie; the Internet Movie Database posted that it is "about a family on the run from a natural crisis that presents a large-scale threat to humanity." Its movie poster illustrates the generic doomsday setting: a deserted highway littered with abandoned cars and shadowed by a dark, cloud-filled sky. (See: I Robot, Deep Impact, 28 Days Later.)
A movie spokesperson said that Shyamalan uses this movie as a platform to entice more preventative global warming action by showing audiences what could potentially happen to the world. This motivation sounds oddly familiar -- kind of like Al Gore's $50-million-grossing An Inconvenient Truth -- only Shyamalan's project is not a documentary but a movie, allowing for a good measure of embellishment for entertainment's sake.
"The film uniquely takes an in-depth look, through an imaginary story, at what could happen if the balance of nature, at the smallest levels, begins to break down," the spokesperson said. Imaginary, eh? That's a lot of leeway.
You bet it is, especially as Shyamalan says at the film's website, "I hope the movie leaves you with the sense that we may not get that chance [to move forward] if we don't start changing things."
How wonderful.
In the end, Americans should be very afraid, not of the images Shyamalan presents, but of the likely reaction by the citizenry.
Let's understand that we have precedent in our nation for fictional movies impacting policy.
For decades, Hollywood showed us frightening images of the nuclear age culminating with 1979's "The China Syndrome." As a result, America moved away from nuclear power plants, a decision that still haunts us three decades later.
Now, the new bogeyman is global warming coming at a time of record energy prices and a slowing economy. Add it all up, and we are once again being scared by Hollywood to make policy decisions that could be economically devastating for years to come.
Are we going to learn from Hollywood's nuclear error, or make exactly the same mistake we did thirty years ago?

The Happening Plot Spoiler
May 25, 2008 - 01:33 ET by PopularTechI feel really, really bad about ruining this for anyone, really I do (not).
An Early Review of M. Night Shyamalan's THE HAPPENING
"It's plants that are responsible. They've decided to wipe out humanity and release the neuro-toxin as their natural weapon. This was far, far more clear in the script (and even the title "The Green Effect") [...] What Shyamalan quickly finds, though, is that it's very, very hard to menacingly cut to an evil-looking tree. That doesn't stop him from trying, though, and he inexplicably adds wind as a way of livening up the scenes. When the leaves of a tree start to blow, evil's afoot. It's really, really hard not to laugh at and there's even a real groaner of a gag-scene wherein Wahlberg timidly apologizes to a houseplant only to find that it's made of rubber. Really."
There now I can sleep and spend the next few weeks ruining the plot to everyone I meet.

It looks like he's just ripping off the Wizard of Oz and the enchanted forest. Care for an apple, anyone?
Shyamalan's has really gone downhill in his last few movies (remember Signs? talk about a horrible movie!). He just seems to be coping the great works of others and calls it his own. This script just screams the name Demeter, only this time Demeter is angry at us. Can't this guy do something ORIGINAL or is he going to follow in Shakespeare's footsteps and continue to rip off the classic Greek mythologies?

By asserting that the public fears nuclear energy,
May 24, 2008 - 12:30 ET by GRLCowangovernment, 30 years ago, was able to protect a lot of fossil fuel revenue. No doubt some members of the public actually did, maybe some even still do, but if these fearful people had not existed, it would have been fiscally advantageous for government to invent them.
Today, the advantage to government when nuclear energy is suppressed is huger than ever: if the nuclear plants that in the USA last year made 807 billion kWh could somehow be made to go away, natural gas to make the same electricity would cost more than a billion dollars a week -- much of it royalties. Since those plants are not going to go away, they continue to let the citizenry use, instead, $0.025 billion a week in uranium.
If the public can be made to disbelieve in global warming, the same advantage accrues. So the money is on the opposite side of the deal to what it was with nuclear energy 30 years ago. It wants you to disbelieve, and pay.

I am not usually one to be
May 24, 2008 - 21:54 ET by DarasenI am not usually one to be the dissenter here but, I think this entry is a bit on the reactionary side. As are some of the comments, not intending any offense.
Firstly the quote "to milk global warming for all the terror and despair it's worth." is from the article at the weather guys and not the movies makers. Secondly there seems to be several quotes from the spokesperson of the movie, a person hired by the studio for PR and not from the creator himself. Further there is no indication That I have fouind that the movie depicts anything to do woth global warming. It seems to dipict some sort of un-named disaster.
To the cooments liking or disling Mr. Shyamalan's movie is of course an opinion. However, to call any pf them a flop is unfactual as all of his films since 'The Sixth Sense' have turned a profit.
Full Disclosure: I have enjoyed all of his films thus far. Shyamalan doesn't make movies about events like aliens attacking Earth (such as 'Independence Day'). He makes movies about people who happen to be a part of the world where these events take place as in Signs'. 'The Village', to me, is brillaint and one of my favourite movies. That is not why I have responded here though.
I felt it necessary to respond because NewsBusters, in this instance, has drifted from "reporting and exposing media bias" to reporting a gut reaction to movie that Mr. Sheppard has not yet, to my knowledge, seen. If the movie comes out and it is two hours of Al Gore wackiness then by all means lambast it. But please let us leave the unfounded emotional and, frankly, not completely informed responses to the left. They have more practice at it anyway.

May 24, 2008 - 22:44 ET by balboaNo, we can't. (FYI, I've been chastised for pointing out spelling errors before. I guess it's all part of the "online experience?")
You are correct I did not
May 25, 2008 - 10:47 ET by DarasenYou are correct I did not spell check (actually Typo check) the post as I
typically do. Frankly, I have become too reliant on Firefox to catch my bad
typing. Oddly it does not work on the NewsBusters site.
However you are incorrect in that "Firstly" and
"Favourite" are not typos. Perhaps utilising a dictionary would help you
with words you apparently do not know. You may even find a better way to express
yourself than to refer to someone as a jackass.
Furthermore it is apparent that beyond looking for words that have been
mistyped (or God forbid ones one seem to not know) you did not actually read
the post, nor have read any of my previous post. Were this the case you would
never label me, of all people, a liberal.
I am bothering to respond to this simply because it further
makes my point. As a conservative I always cringe when someone says
conservatives can not think for themselves. As with most leftist statements I
find the opposite to be true. It has always been my position that conservatism
is a far more logical standpoint than liberalism. Thus, when what appears to
essentially be a knee-jerk reaction to something is made I tend to point this
fault out. Such as is the case with the original article and your response to
my comment.
Interestingly I remember reading in several places where
people disliked ‘Signs’ for it’s religious overtones about faith.

Global Warming Profits
May 24, 2008 - 23:00 ET by wdhorningIn the mid-1970s I was sitting in a restaurant and overheard two executives from a company specializing in environmental "fixes". They had just discuss a few of the legitmate "fixes" they were working on and how to market them. Then one said, "What if we run out of ideas down the road? How will our company survive?" The other replied, "We will invent environmental dangers, and then create the fixes and market them."
The above story sounds exactly like what Al Gore has done, namely be a huge owner in a "carbon credit" company and then market the idea of man-made global warming, and then for the rich who are "green", but do not want to save energy in 50,000 sq ft homes or in using private jets, to let them buy "carbon credits" to ease their conscience.
I only wonder why some rich person has not sued Al Gore for fraud yet?
And now there is this new film to make a buck off of "junk science."
But these two are not the first. A few of the others include:
- early freon, while very damaging to ozone, is so heavy it hardly ever effected ozone at higher levels and actually was beneficial to helping reduce surface-level ozone, which hurt those with various lung disorders and diseases; furthermore, new replacements are far less efficient, creating the need to consume more electricity; you might say they replaced one slight risk with a far greater problem, namely too much electric consumption, and with that, more coal & oil consumption to run these types of electric generating plants; those blackouts and brownouts during hot summers are indirectly caused by "junk science" environmentalists.
- 10's of millions have died from the ban on DDT due to insect bred diseases, while even under the absolute worse DDT misuse cases, at best, a few dozen persons would have died from it by now (all that was needed was clear instructions on proper use and strong law enforcement)
- and more recently, removing the lead from electronics' products is the worst thing that could have been done, since all that is needed is to line the bottom and sides of landfills with cheap, ground up coal, a natural filter that stops all kinds of metals and other chemicals from getting into the water table. And the reason it is so bad is that the ability to have really reliable solder joints requires lead and thus the impact on costs (for costly replacements) and safety (now reliable is your cell phone going to be one day?) have been compromised; you might say one risk has been replaced with a far greater risk (note: replacing lead solder for copper water pipes is a good idea, however).
There are of course many good things that have been done to improve the environment, but some "crooks" have used hysteria to make a buck with outright fabrications and really bad "junk science".
