Since media began recognizing the international food crisis and its ties to biofuels, NewsBusters has been wondering when press members will expose how intricately linked Nobel Laureate Al Gore is to this controversial issue.
On Sunday, Fox News's Sean Hannity finally did just that.
In a segment on "Hannity's America," the host addressed much of what NewsBusters has been reporting for the past several months about this matter, and established a template that hopefully others in the media will emulate if they are indeed interested in helping to solve this growing problem (video embedded right):
HANNITY: This year, nations all over the world are feeling the effects of a global food shortage which has driven the price of basic crops like corn, rice and wheat to an all-time high. So how did this happen? An unfortunate act of nature? Not hardly.
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)
HANNITY: The U.N. World Food Program calls it a silent tsunami that's threatening millions of people on every continent - it's hunger. The price of food staples like rice, wheat and corn are suddenly going through the roof because there are not enough crops to go around. Economists fear this new global food shortage will get worse before it gets better and could result in massive malnutrition all over the world.
JOSETTE SHEERAN, U.N. FOOD PROGRAM: This is something that knows no borders and that is rolling through the world and really increasing the misery index of the world's most vulnerable.
HANNITY: Now, here in the United States, we are just beginning to feel the pain of high food prices. But in low income countries where 50-80 percent of a family's income is spent on food, the shortage is already having a devastating impact. In order to help those nations, President Bush has called for another $770 million in emergency foreign food assistance.
But how did the food shortage become so acute so fast? The growing consensus is that the crop deficit is directly related to the increased demand for production of, quote, "earth friendly" bio fuels, an effort pushed by none other than the vanquished vice president Al Gore and all in the name of quote, "saving the planet."
Now, this is how it works. Global warming alarmists preach that filling our cars with bio fuels like ethanol that that's the answer to protecting the environment. Then, larger portions of food crops are set aside for fuel production which cuts into the amount of corn, rice and wheat that make it to families all over the world. In the end, less available food causes sky rocketing prices. And it's low income families that are hurt the most. Al Gore himself took credit for the increase in the ethanol production in a speech that he delivered to the Third Annual Farm Conference back in 1998.
"I was also proud to stand up for the ethanol tax exemption when it was under attack in congress; at on point, supplying a tie-breaking vote in the senate to save it. The more we can make this home-grown fuel a successful, widely-used product, the better off our farmers and our environment will be."
HANNITY: But a recent study by two professors at the University of Minnesota who specialize in economics and food policy, says misguided policies like that one are to blame for the food shortage that we are all feeling now.
BEN SENAUER, UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA: With all of this attention bio fuels is getting, it's supplying about three percent of the transportation fuel needs in the United States. If we use the entire corn crop, leave any of it to feed livestock and export, we could supply about 18 percent of our transportation of fuel needs. So in that sense of the word ethanol in and of itself is not the answer.
HANNITY: The connection between bio fuel and the food shortage is so clear that last week, 24 Republican senators sent a letter to the environmental protection agency suggesting a change to the current mandate on ethanol production.
SENAUER: So if you work out the math and you are going to fill up a 25 gallon tank of a big luxury car SUV with pure, 100 percent ethanol, that's going to take about 450 bushels of corn. That corn contains enough calories, something in the order of 2,000 calories a day to feed a person for a year.
HANNITY: But the fact is, Al Gore has a financial stake in spreading global warming hysteria. He's admitted to investing in the kinds of companies that will profit from his plea, to, quote, "Go green." Was Al Gore thinking about saving the planet or perhaps lining his pockets?
So here we have Professor Gore making the rounds to college campuses with his inconvenient documentary convincing impressionable kids that the U.S. is a country full of irresponsible gluttons with giant carbon footprints. The urged the world to conserve energy, turn to bio fuels like ethanol and cut down on air travel.
By the way, did he mention his mode of transportation? No, his private jet usage never came up. Of course, Al Gore's friends in the liberal media jumped on the global warming bandwagon, sounding the alarm on rising sea levels, melting glaciers and demise of the polar bears.
But they continue to ignore the fact scores of scientists all over the world say human activities are not heating up the earth at all. In fact, some studies indicate is poised to begin a period of global cooling. But the network news outlets - well, they never seem to report on that.
So did Al Gore blatantly disregard climate information that he didn't help his bottom line? Or is he just terribly wrong? Instead of making room on the mantel for his Academy Award, maybe Gore should have been looking a little bit harder at the impact of the shortsighted, quote, "go green" agenda. Now that the wheels are coming off of Al Gore's global warming bandwagon, well, even some of his loyal supporters may have to make a choice, "Should I follow Al Gore's half-baked notion to save the planet or feed my family?" The answer should be obvious.
We can only hope -- now that Hannity has let this cat out of the bag -- other media members around the nation will follow suit and start reporting the really inconvenient truth about Nobel Laureate Al Gore.
Stay tuned.

don't know if you can read that article without a subscription, but it's an article in the Wall Street Journal about a survey of economists' opinions on increasing fuel and food prices. unfortunately only 13% of economists think biofuels have contributed, so much for that clear connection, hannity. fundamental issues like increased demand from china and india combined with speculators betting on commodities prices and constricted supply have contributed way more than "biofuels" (according to surveyed economists).
hannity should consult an economist, rather than just look for opportunities to bash gore.
Um, no...
May 13, 2008 - 15:46 ET by CortillaenThe article and survey results do not say "only 13% of economists think biofuels have contributed". What they say is that only 13% of the 55 surveyed economists think biofuels are the greatest factor in rising food prices. Nice try on the spin, though.
Incidentally, the fact that those 13% did say biofuels are the greatest factor suggests that they are indeed a major factor, just not likely the most important one. Also, ethanol mandates could be viewed to fall under the "Weather and other supply constraints" category, so it's possible that ambiguity resulted in some votes which might other wise have been for the former going into the latter.

May 13, 2008 - 16:13 ET by johnGthat was my "only," and yes only 13% believe biofuels are the reason compared to 20% for supply constraints and 41% for demands from china/india. thus plenty more economists see those two factors as bigger issues than hannity conclusion of biofuels.
Again, no...
May 13, 2008 - 16:39 ET by Cortillaen"only 13% believe biofuels are the reason" Once more, 13% believe biofuels are the greatest reason for the rapid price increase. I'd really like to see a listing of how many times each cause was ranks 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. That would be considerably more useful than the cute little pie chart.
If Hannity has called biofuel production the sole reason for the prise hikes, I must have missed it. What I've heard is him calling it A) a major factor (which this survey appears to support) and B) a factor we can impact. Last I checked, we have no say on the population growth of our own nation, much less others', and the weather belongs solely to the Goreacle, apparently. Talking about them except in passing is pretty pointless, so he focuses on the biggest factor that is within our grasp. Is this somehow wrong? Should he waste time whining about China's child-per-couple laws not being strict enough?

Even if the answer is no, it's still nuts for the government to mandate ethanol in the face of the increased demand from China and India.
On the other hand, for the die-hard Greenies, if a few million people starve to death, so much the better for the planet, right?

The price of grains has had some pressure put on it from China and India getting wealthier. However, the straw that did it was ethanol. I spend considerable time in the Philippines. They're in a rice crisis. Even though they have lots of sugar cane land, farmers are switching to sugar based crops like jatopha and palm oil in lieu of planting edible crops. People were starving. Literally. The government stepped in with several Executive Orders to short term fix it. The speculators in grains are doing what they are doing in oil and other petro chemicals. They are whipping up a panic market and making a fortune. They couldn't do it if there was sufficient land and energy to bring on line. In the short term, there is not. And it's all about ethanol. The other factors would raise prices, but there would be sufficient supplies at that price. Today there is not the supply. People are dying.
BTW... if we converted all the arable land in the USA to ethanol crops it would only replace 30% of fuel consumption while we all starved for lack of food (and feed for food animals).

Hannity and FoxNews, first...then the mainstream media might pick up on this story? I keep wondering why there has been no traction on this story. I'll admit it is gaining gravity on the blogsphere. Is it possible Gore's many "green" investments including EdenIQ and its former relationship with Altra Bio Fuels could be construed in sticking the "hypocrite" label to Gore thereby disproving everything that is associated with Global Warming/Climate Change?
Ethanol is supported by the President and he decides on the direction of the country's energy policies. If the President has decided to push for an end to our Oil habit then, by golly, we should follow his lead. If I'm not mistaken Gore has supported non-corn based ethanol initiatives. As for Altra Bio Fuels, they spun EdenIQ off as a separate company which is involved with the development of tools in processing ethanol not the actual distribution of ethanol. Altra Bio Fuels is heavily invested in corn based ethanol processing and distribution with invested money in EdenIQ. Most environmentalists have been against corn based ethanol from the onset. The corn farmers , corn states, ADM, and Big Oil have showed to be the largest supporters of corn based ethanol. Now, that's a story!

Handling ethanol is a major headache for oil companies and refineries (that do blending). ADM, Cenex, and all the others are such hypocrits. They are keeping the 54 cent a gallon import tax on foreign (sugar cane) ethanol and the 64 cent a gallon subsidy on domestic (corn) ethanol. What a rip off.

Choice...it's up to you!
May 14, 2008 - 10:50 ET by SyriusUpC,
You have a choice not to wear your seatbelt and forgo installing a smoke detector. Seat belts and smoke detectors are mandated by law to save taxpayer money. When you decide to stop wearing your seatbelt and have a severe accident, the valuable limited resource, called first responders, are called to the scene to save your life. The problem lies in the fact they could have been on their way to save a heart attack victim. Since your injuries are more severe they choose to save your life. It was your choice not to wear the seatbelt thereby creating a lack of resources for society. Same with a smoke detector, how many houses and lives are saved with a smoke detector? Again, freeing up the valuable limited resources available to society. Sometimes laws are made to protect the resources of society from a single individual's stupidity to abuse the resource.
Oil has been deemed a valuable limited resource and part of our national security interest. The President has promoted ethanol, biofuels, and other alternatives to help fuel and supplement our energy needs and protect our national security interests. Choices, choices, choices...

May 14, 2008 - 08:41 ET by danybhoyfitzy,
Gore is a fraud, & his buisiness dealings should really be investigated for possible criminal fraud. What he has become is an alchemist of sorts, turning crap into gold. He knows damn well that what he is pushing is crap, but he's getting rich & is making a power grab that will not be restricted by the US constitution.
I actually believe he is pissed about having the 2000 election "taken" away from him by a 5-4 vote, when he actually was one of the worst candidates in recent years. He is now getting his revenge on anyone stupid enough to vote for that stupid George W.Bush instead of him, & he's still gotta be mad about Nader as well. He wants to get rich, & get his revenge.
BTW, sorry about the 2-0 win by my Reds at White Hart Lane, Torres with a nice one in the 2nd half. I only hope the ownership issue at my club gets taken care of, & I read a report that Spurs are looking to expand WHL to about 50,000. They could use the extra money from the extra seating. Also, I'm still getting over the Champions League loss to Cheslea, John Arne Risse's own goal screwed up everything from a Liverpool standpoint, the Reds should be going to Moscow to face ManU, not Chelsea.

May 14, 2008 - 13:33 ET by fitzfongIt's a scary thought, but would he have done as much damage as President as he has done as a private citizen?
My motto has always been: Think like a Republican, communicate like a Democrat. Look how Gore has been able to make a fraudulent fortune using a dishonestly self-righteous platform that the Presidency was somehow "taken away from" him. The truth is that he failed to steal the election, but his wordsmiths have made him look like the victim. If our representatives engaged in the kind of big idea, light on content, heavy on oversimplification rhetoric that those politicians on the left do, we'd get a hell of a lot farther...because at least our ideas are sound.
As for Spurs-Liverpool, you've got a real gem in Torres. Tottenham have been in cruise control since they got bounced from the UEFA Cup. They had nothing left for which to play. They won a cup for the first time in 9 years, so that's something, I guess. As for the new ground, it will be interesting to see the effect it has on the club. I understand that one of the plans would be to build the new stadium next door to the old one, thus avoiding having to play home matches at West Ham's ground (having been to White Hart Lane on a number of occasions, I don't see where there's any adjacent land available, so they might knock down the current ground and rebuild at the same sight...Upton Park here we come). I worry, though, that the new stadium might have a negative effect on the club. They're not in the "Big Four", and I fear that they may go the way of other former Premier League Clubs who recently built new grounds...Southampton, Coventry and (gasp!) Leicester City who are now in the 3rd tier of English football for the first time ever. As for the Champions League Final, I detest both Chelsea and Man. United, but I will root for Chelsea as there is nothing worse than a gloating Man. United fan...I should know, my cousin (and best friend) is one. He hasn't stopped talking about '94, '96 and especially '99...I can only imagine how insufferable he'll be after this one (and/or next year if they catch up to Liverpool's record of domestic championships...they're still a long way off when it comes to European Cups, though).
