Will Media Cover Historic Hearing on Democrats Violating House Rules?

An historic hearing will be conducted on Tuesday to determine whether House Democrats in August 2007 violated parliamentary procedure in defeating a motion to deny illegal aliens welfare benefits.

Readers likely remember the brouhaha this disgraceful display created at the time (video embedded right).

With high-ranking Democrats such as Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) and Michael McNulty (D-N.Y.) scheduled to testify, one has to wonder whether this unprecedented event, especially in a critical election year, will get much coverage from media doing everything in their power to take back the White House.

As reported Monday by Jed Babbin of Human Events (emphasis added):

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

According to a “notice of hearing” obtained by HUMAN EVENTS, and as explained to us by House sources, Hoyer – along with Cong. Michael McNulty (D-NY) – will be the first members to testify in such a hearing in the history of the Congress.

Members often testify in behalf of bills they introduce or in behalf of presidential nominees they favor (or against those they oppose). But it is only in the rarest occasion do they face potentially hostile questions, in ethics committee hearings. Tuesday’s hearing before the “Select Committee to Investigate the Voting Irregularities of August 2, 2007” will be the first time in the history of the House that members of Congress have faced such an inquiry and been subjected to questioning by members of the opposing party.

As I reported last October Republicans reacted with outrage at the maneuvers apparently pulled by Hoyer, acting as House leader and McNulty, who was presiding over House proceedings at the time. Republicans had made a motion to deny illegal aliens welfare benefits. When McNulty gaveled the vote to a close, the Republicans had won 214-213. Then, apparently at Hoyer’s direction, the vote was reopened so that Speaker Pelosi could vote, producing a tie that defeated the Republican motion.

As one would imagine, if the Republicans controlled Congress when this happened, and were being investigated for possible wrongdoing now, this hearing likely would have been discussed all weekend, with a segment on Sunday's "60 Minutes," and be attended by every press outlet with hourly updates.

Of course, depending on the outcome, the broadcast network evening news programs likely would have led with this story on Tuesday.

Somehow it seems highly unlikely tomorrow's hearing will get that much attention unless the Democrats are cleared. Why might that be?

This whole screwup is based

This whole screwup is based on the ideal of parliamentary procedures, in fact the whole of government and congress is based on parliamentary procedures.  Some of which are decided each session of congress.  This is a problem with teh democrats and thye tried and succeeded in railroading the GOP by ignoriing proceedure.  This trial is extremely important in determining decorum and the majority party stomping on the rules.

I dont think much will be made of this on the nets but in the blogosphere ther will be a blue dress incident.

Nuke em til they glow then shoot em in the dark.

Rules

Congress is responsible for making and administering its own rules.

Each House may determine the rules of its proceedings, punish its members for disorderly behavior, and, with the concurrence of two thirds, expel a member.

The real question is whether Hoyer's behavoir was usual and customary or something very irregular. Give the rather jello spined Republican's in Congress, one can only assume it was, if the Republicans made a fuss.

Media Will Cover Them On This!

The Demofacist don't need to worry about the media on this one.  As usual, the intent was Politically Correct even if the action was clearly illegal.  So in the Liberal method, it's OK to break the rules if your intention is " noble".  Noble being decided by the Politically Correct point of view.

how might the MSM cover

how might the MSM cover this if it was an investigation against Republicans...?

Top stories? Front pages? Headlines? Diabolical RNC angles? And of course how would they tie it to global warming?

See how they play the game

  1. The first thing you have to know about Congress is that it is filled with lawyers.
  2. The second thing is that lawyers feed on technicalities. The will of the people is one thing, but if these lawyers can find a technicality to thwart the will of the people and get their own way, they will exploit it (without a hint of shame).
  3. The third thing to remember is that the news media wants extensive constitutional protections, including a shield law, because they claim to have the vital responsibility to inform the public on what their government is doing.

If the media doesn't cover this extensively, when it is precisely the sort of story they're supposed to be covering, then all of their claims will be exposed as hollow. This story is a public display of how Congress really works. It's not tangential, like a lurid sex scandal. This is the actual working of Congress. If the media isn't all over this, and if they can't inform the public what issues are involved, then they should shut up and stick to gossip.

Watch the media's hypocrisy here as they skip or slight this story, and then get on their high horse about a "shield law" because of their "sacred duty" to inform the public. If they don't cover this, they forever surrender any right to anything.

If the Democrats do it, it's

If the Democrats do it, it's treated by the media as "inside baseball" or "political hijinks" - something to be chuckled over by the panel at the end of the show. If Republicans do it, it's the top story and treated as "a grave threat to the republic".

Better things to do

The MSM have better things to do, like faint and swoon over Obama, try to convice America that Hillary needs to drop out so their Obama can go on unhindered, show liberalism as cool and hip while blaming conservatives for all the worlds' problems instead of actually reporting on facts and news.  I mean that's a full time job for lots of people.

Process issues...

Noel,

Most Americans are not informed on process issues. The general lack of interest, education and understanding of governmental process by most Americans causes media outlets to look for other stories that will capture most Americans interest. It's about the story that bleeds...leads. Whether its the Democrats or Republicans who violated a particular parliamentary procedure, most Americans will say fix it and get on with finding solutions to the real problems that confront their daily lives such as tax cuts, gas prices, etc.

Substance

Not that process is unimportant, but...Is there any particular reason Democrats believe that people should be getting welfare while living here illegally? I obviously have problems with the concept even for people who are legally-here, but let's confine the question to illegals, for maximum amusement value.
JMR

The tax & spend drug war looks racist in the real world.

Right Sarc - that is the bigger issue

They should be covering it more because the illegal vote caused such an outrageous result. The media didn't cover the whole subject very much. Most people don't know that illegals can get welfare and if they did they would be outraged. That's why they don't like to cover it.

I'm curious about the point of this proceeding because I can't imagine Democrats finding themselves guilty especially when the media give them a pass.

Thanks, but despite my "lighthearted" tone

I truly DO want the Democrats' "serious" explanation, if anyone here can offer it. I can't promise not to make fun of them if/when I get it, but I really am curious, despite the fact that my 'cloak' seems to be working on my intended target...
JMR

The tax & spend drug war looks racist in the real world.

Sarc - they'll sweep it under the rug just like the media

The liberal posters here just stay away from some of the most outrageous things their party does and hope discussion and attention to it just goes away. Every once in a while one of them will say - well I don't agree with that, but it's not enough to make them not vote for people who vote that way.

I wish they'd be honest, just this once.

I'll go ahead and admit that in my ideal world of no welfare for anybody -- legal US citizens included -- I might have to step over starving people in the streets somewhere, at least until private institutions take back over from the monopoly. It troubles me, but at least I can be honest enough to admit the obvious.

Why can't the other side say something like, "we think EVERYONE ON THIS PLANET should be on welfare, sarc, that's why this was a good vote, and it's a shame our side had to resort to shenanigans on what should be such an obvious moral issue!" They could even throw in a "you should be ashamed of your unthinking reliance on the amoral free market to solve problems only welfare can solve" for good measure, if they want.
JMR

The tax & spend drug war looks racist in the real world.

Yeah, let's be honest...

Sarc,

It will never happen to you, right? Until someone steps over you as you starve to death, you'll continue to believe everyone should be able to help themselves without any government assistance except from maybe private charities and organizations that get a tax deduction? I think the illegals are trying not to starve and are trying to help their families in achieving a better life for themselves and we profit from their miserable jobs. How much do they contribute to our society as opposed to how much do they take? At least with a little help they'll continue to show up for work.(-sarc on)

Why is Abortion and Deportation similar? It's the logic behind it. If you are in support of abortion you should be supporting deportation and vice versa. If you support the mother and the unwanted child, you should support the illegals who are unwanted in this country. The aborted child could be a productive member of society just like the deported illegal. So, my point why not support the ones who want to be here and work towards a better life for themselves and the country?

You're hallucinating. I never said that.

Where did I EVER say it will never happen to me, or were you hallucinating?? I say the latter.

I want immigrants in the USA, but I want them coming legally. Nothing you have said has even come CLOSE to answering my questions, though. I'll quote myself: Is there any particular reason Democrats believe that people should be getting welfare while living here illegally?" And I need to re-ask, do you really think everyone on this planet should be on welfare??

Your abortion/deportation analogy flunks the laugh test, in part because you can only abort a baby once, but the USA has deported many individual illegals tens or perhaps hundreds of times just during the past 3 decades. Please, concentrate on actually-answering my questions. Thanks.
JMR

The tax & spend drug war looks racist in the real world.

"Why is Abortion and Deportation similar?"

Really, your answer to this self-posed question is a BIG stretch of an analogy. For one, a deported illegal is, by definition, a criminal. They did something to deserve their fate. An unborn child did not.

And a deportation is the same as death? Or maybe it should be "non-life," since the aborted child never really had much of a life.

And your loose use of the term "unwanted" tries to make some moral equivalence of the two. Illegal immigrants are only "unwanted" as illegals, by any society that is based on law. As far as I know, there is no poll taken about whether we "want" certain legal immigrants. An aborted child is, sadly, unwanted by it's mother.

And just btw, I'm not following you around. We just seem to be active on the same threads.    ;^)

And now it's off to dinner.

Syris - Sarc and IJoe effectively rebutted your deportation

comparison.

I'd like to ad the thing you liberals don't get no matter how many times we tell you but I'll try anyway hoping that one day it will stick.

We don't hate poor people, we believe in helping them with charity that motivates them to make it on their own and then give back with their own charity. We think that putting them on the government payroll dooms them to a life of poverty because they rely on the government rather than themselves

And if it gets to the point that people are stepping over me

As I starve to death, I'd prefer to trust family or non-government institutions rather than our obese government. If that means there's a chance I'll starve, I'll take the chance, but on the condition that government actually goes on a diet for once in my lifetime.

That means I must always advocate the government spending as little as possible. Low taxes/inflation/spending mean prosperity, so charities of all sorts can be funded by those "evil" rich people who -- unlike welfare bureaucrats -- often seem to actually care about the poor as people, rather than as just an endless, self-reinforcing job.
JMR

The tax & spend drug war looks racist in the real world.

agreed sarc

If living on government charity means I'd have to watch our government do horrible things without having any leverage to stop them, then no way.

It's not the government's job to be the Red Cross - that's why we have a Red Cross in the first place.

So...your image of poor people is...???

Dee,

...a person down on their luck not being able to...work???

"We don't hate poor people, we believe in helping them with charity that

I find your statement heartwarming & kind that helping others by ways of charity gives you a warm, fuzzy feeling.

As for me, I think creating a job for someone replaces the charity angle you support. By having a job, a person can contribute by way of taxes back to society and help his/her family in progressing to a brighter future. If they want to give back even more they can support whatever charity they want. Our taxes do help those in need and when they need it most.

As for some being doomed to a life of poverty...

Syrius

Syrius - are you crazy?

Welfare is not a job. It's the opposite of a job, it's what keeps people from getting a job.

Charity doesn't impede people getting jobs because people usually want to take greater care of money that is given to them from people vs what is given to them by government. They end up feeling entitled to the government money but when it's charity they don't. The feel inspired by the kindness of others and often reciprocate as soon as they are able.

The government can't give jobs to people (except for a very small percentage), only businesses can and people who believe in themselves are more likely to get them.

Interesting...

Dee,

Avoiding my links?

You dream of a charity utopia where everyone feels obligated to reciprocate your goodwill? You expect them to give back? What happens when they don't? Do you stop giving to them?

The government can't give jobs to people (except for a very small
percentage), only businesses can and people who believe in themselves
are more likely to get them.

So, besides the small percentage of government jobs- civilian, postal, and military...which always is reported as huge...the businesses created by the SBA shouldn't be counted, correct? Federally funded retraining programs for those who lost their jobs shouldn't be counted, either? The federal, state, and local governments help day in and day out in partnerships with businesses. So, to discount the impact of governments doling out jobs and focus more on charity work would have a dramatic impact which would worsen the country's future. There are federally funded financial safety nets in place for a reason- to get people back to work. To continue to harp on the 2% of the US population receiving welfare payments and overlooking the fact that most welfare recipients are off of welfare within two years is just propagating misinformation.

Dee,

...on welfare. Living in poverty and being homeless. Yeah, don't look at the links since it may change your image of a poor person. The money spent on welfare is the same money spent on other social programs...social, hmmm...socialistic...socialism...job retraining with government funds??? We, as a nation, prosper when we invest in raising the quality of life of everyone. I'm not saying everyone should be a millionaire and live high on the hog, just a decent, dignified life with a job to support themselves. It's time to start investing into manufacturing products instead of shipping them from overseas.

Syrius

"...the dire consequences to society when people begin to believe that by
renaming someone to erase their humanity opens the door to the

Quick Question Syrius

It's time to start investing into manufacturing products instead of shipping them from overseas.

Where do we find these investors? Do we tell manufacturing companies to stay in America, pay everyone 10 bucks an hour, pay half their profits in tax, endure strict regulations and mandates to use alternative energy...and all the while their competition is making cheap products elsewhere?

Ah, we can't force investors to do that so we'll tax the rich and get the government to invest in it. That'll be great: a government that provides our daily needs from cars to medicine to clothing. Will those government functions become broke and busted just like public education, where the government is ever taxing more for the service and we keep having to buy ever more supplies from our private money? Nah, no way, not our government...

Manufacturing jobs don't pay and no one but illegals would take

them.

Man Syrius - you really think these people can't do anything but assembly line work? You are such a snob. No one wants those jobs. They don't even want to work at McDonalds for above min wage. So stop your Katrina Vandenhouvle Nation Speak.

AGAIN - Welfare and job training are not the same thing. Many charities provide job training also.

Nice how you derailed this thread and made it about something other than the Illegal immigrants getting Welfare Benefits. That's the bigger issue that you have never addressed.

Getting people back to work...

Dee,

American are the most productive workers in the world. As jobs have gone oversees, they have been left with limited choices. I used manufacturing as one example. You say no one wants those jobs? Toyota, BMW, Volkswagen, and other foreign companies are investing in new plants in the South. People and towns are welcoming the chance to have a job again. Take for instance, Greenville, SC. Ten years ago, the downtown area was boarded up storefronts and no hope. Investment from outside of this country changed the landscape. Greenville, SC is a vibrant growing community again. The people are beginning to complain of how the cost of living has increased with the increase in population. (I call that a good problem.) I traveled through Washington, GA and was impressed by the new immigrants who have begun to change the town square and create jobs for the locals. The creation of jobs create better lives for people and their communities.

Syrius

"...the dire consequences to society when people begin to believe that by
renaming someone to erase their humanity opens the door to the
devaluation of everyone's life..."-dscott

agree with Syrius on this one thing

My brother works in manufacturing right now and makes about 12 bucks an hour. It's a myth that American people are too "good" for factory jobs.

It would really do us Americans some good to have a little humble pie so we quit passing our laundry off to some immigrant girl because it's beaneath us.

Syrius and Candance - the vast majority of manufacturing jobs

do not pay well. Auto manufacturing and others that pay well have not left. The ones that leave are the ones that are not cost effective for Americans to do. My brother -in law works in manufacturing and makes $30/hr but has horrible working conditions and the environment is like a sweat shop. He fixes machines so his job is more skilled. Most of the line workers are illegals or immigrants with green cards or new citizens. They are paid above min wage and still the company can't retain regular American born people. They come through there, and they always have some but the turnover is high with them (unlike Mexicans and Mexican/Americans). They don't want to put up with the working conditions because they don't have to.

I worked in manufacturing before I went to college. It was my motivation for going. I don't think anyone is happy in those types of jobs. They usually have to pay better than min wage to get people to do it. No one is happy doing that kind of work long term. It's fun when you are young because there are lots of young people and it's like an extension of high school.

There is nothing wrong with people doing those kinds of jobs. I did it, and I'd do it again if nothing else were available. There are other things available and that's the major reason that companies leave. They have to pay people too much to retain them because the work is so boring.

No one should take a job just so illegals don't do it. Yes, people on welfare should be doing some of the jobs that illegals are doing but they won't. Everyone else has a better job and is not going to do them unless the pay is really good and that is the very reason companies move elsewhere.

If we have more manufacturing here we would only attract more illegals.

What a snob!

Dee,

I picture you standing in front of a bunch of unemployed factory workers explaining how they are miserable and pathetic for not going to college like yourself. Describing how they must break the shackles of factory work and go to college to earn a decent living away from the illegal immigrants. Once they earn their degrees, they can start to complain about how the illegals are coming into this country and taking the decent jobs away from hard working Americans. You cut the conversation short. After jumping into your Mercedes, you realize you have to stop by WalMart to pick up your new plasma wide screen (made in China and on sale, too!) and then meet the President on the Golf course and complain how the poor just don't understand how hard it is to be you. "Nice Drive, Mr. President! Now, watch this..."

Syrius

"...the dire consequences to society when people begin to believe that by
renaming someone to erase their humanity opens the door to the
devaluation of everyone's life..."-dscott

Yeah nice try Syrius you are obviously the snob

You want people to stop going to college and just take up factory work so that you can always be above them

I'm not a status symbol type like you Syrius. I drive Ford's and don't own an LCD or Plazma T.V., unlike many other people with less money than me.

I still have friends from the factory I worked in to this day and that was 20 years ago. Most still don't have a college education. Most of the guys have gone to trade union jobs like Plumbers, electricians, heating/airconditioning and construction. All enjoy their work much more than they did in a factory and get paid much more with better benefits. Most of the women have gone on to do things like Retail, Real Estate, Printing, Web design and all also find the work less boring. Some don't get paid much more, but like their jobs better.

You are a joke Syrius. I am as far from a snob as someone can get. As I said, I'd work in a factory again if I had to. There is absolutely nothing wrong with anyone working in a factory but most are happier doing something else. I know from experience and you just shoot your snobbish mouth off like an idiot. You want to force people to work in those jobs when you won't do them yourself. That is snobbish. Extremely snobbish.

Circles, going round & round...

Dee,

Are you okay? We were talking about lost jobs. I pointed out as one example the lost of manufacturing jobs. You pointed out how people don't really want those jobs. You went onto College so you no longer had to work in a factory job. Which still leaves the unemployed factory job worker without a place to work. I never said people should quit going to college and take up factory work. Your personal references to others, who haven't gone on to higher education, achieving better pay through trade union jobs is irrelevant to the unemployed factory worker. Here's what you said...

I don't think anyone is happy in those types of jobs. They usually
have to pay better than min wage to get people to do it. No one is
happy doing that kind of work long term. It's fun when you are young
because there are lots of young people and it's like an extension of
high school.

There is nothing wrong with people doing those kinds of jobs. I did
it, and I'd do it again if nothing else were available. There are other
things available and that's the major reason that companies leave. They
have to pay people too much to retain them because the work is so
boring.

When you're young and don't have mouths to feed or obligated to a spouse, you can pretty much enjoy thinking of getting a "real" job. What about the people who believe in what they do and take pride in their jobs? Then, they get laid off and the factory closes up because they were getting paid too much because the work was boring...talk to someone from the steel industry...you'll find out it was cheaper in China for the factory to produce steel. So, think about what you said, re-read what you wrote and hopefully you'll start to see what I see...it's not pretty. Gosh, I hope you'll start buying "Made in the USA" products again...

Syrius

"...the dire consequences to society when people begin to believe that by

Am I okay? Why so worried Syrius?

Your concern is as fake and phony as everything you say. Complete nonsense. The subject was not jobs - it was Welfare and Illegals getting welfare. I'm done with your stupid nonsense. As I said, I speak from experience on this and you speak theoretical nonsense.

After you diverted the subject to imply that Welfare for illegals was equal to work training programs for U.S. citizens, you went on a silly nonsensical rant about the huge need to bring manufacturing jobs BACK HERE. Not protect the ones that are here. That silly argument wasn't working for you so now you want to turn it into saving the poor steal worker whose factory may close. You not only changed the subject from bring back to save but you also changed the subject from a blanket "manufacturing jobs" to Steel worker jobs.

I'm sure you will change the subject yet again when that doesn't work for you. So back to my point that we don't need all the manufacturing jobs brought back here. With the 5% unemployment (considered by many economists to be full employment), the vast majority of manufacturing jobs would only be filled by illegals if brought back because people are happier doing something else. Where's this job retraining that you liked so much before?

My Grandmother was a single parent raising two daughters by working in a shoe factory that paid nothing and she had to hold down two other jobs (live in house keeper and seamstress) to make ends meet. She literally worked her fingers to the bone with manufacturing and no one here has to put up with that degree of hardship now. I'm sorry if it offends your sensibilities that some poor white trash like my Mom, who had to go to school with home made clothes and couldn't have friends over because they had no home of their own, was able to go to college and not have to work her fingers to the bone like my grandmother did.

When you college educated liberals are ready to sign on for those factory jobs - I'll sign a petition to bring them back. That would open up some good jobs for hard working people who deserve them.

Derailed??

Sounds more like some substance instead of process that you simply don't want to discuss, to me. If anything, trying to change the subject to abortion or deportation is the attempt at derailing things.

What happened here is that newly empowered Democrats were not just able but ANXIOUS to use process in order to get a specific, albeit weird, substantive result that's on their agenda for some reason. I'm not evil for being curious about whether anyone can articulate the 'principle' behind that decision. I'm just being my usual, inconvenient self. And as you've all seen, conservatives find me equally frustrating when the subject changes and I hold their feet to the fire...

Once again, with feeling: "Is there any particular reason Democrats believe that people should be getting welfare while living here illegally?"
JMR

The tax & spend drug war looks racist in the real world.

wrong again syrius

Your original response to this thread boiled down to "the public doesn't care about tedious violations in Congress" even though many people do care. Futhermore I remember the media covering Congress in earnest when Republicans blocked the AMT tax, when Dems insisted on interrogating Roger Clemens, and when McCain formed the Gang of 14 to prevent a showdown over a filibuster.

Yet this same media ignores John Murtha using Congress to accuse Marines of being terrorists, Harry Reid smearing Rush Limbaugh on the Senate floor, and the Democrats using military funding to blackmail Bush into ending the war.

Don't sit there and tell me the media only covers interesting things in Congress. No one thought it was interesting to watch them investigate Roger Clemens.

Face it, this is not being covered because it makes Democrats look bad. When Republicans filibuster they're being difficult - when Democrats filibuster they're stopping a right wing conspiracy machine.

Now that we have debunked your assertion that the media ignores boring news, Sarc's point comes back into play. The story behind the violation is, in his view, the main reason no one wants to talk about it. Sarc is pointing to the constant double standard that breaking the rules is okay for libs as long as they're advancing liberal ideas. He then takes this a step further by saying "hey, if our stupid congress critters hadn't been passing out welfare to criminals this would have never even happened."

You then got huffy and accused him of derailing the thread.

Philisophically speaking, you don't have any defense for the story so you want to change the subject entirely. Message board trolls and folks who like to lecture are one in the same...what do you think I mean by that?

I truly apologize...

candance & sarcasmo,

When sarcasmo started off responding to my statement...

"Not that process is unimportant, but..." (the usage of "but" in his statement is the same as "I support what you say but I don't think that is the issue."

I tended to think it was a derailment in order to push his idea on focusing on the "substance" of the parliamentary issue being pushed by the Democrats at the time.

So...Welfare for illegals?...How are they able to obtain taxpayer funds without proof of US citizenship?

Sarcasmo,

...of "Lawyers are, right now, trying to get fraudulent SSNs benefits paid to them, so it's far from certain illegals won't get THAT along with the welfare that's the crux of this issue."

I'm certain at this point they are not getting the funds unless something changes my point stands and my question remains-Where's the money going and who is spending it? If the FICA payments are being obtained and not being used, couldn't they be used to offset the welfare benefits?

Syrius

"...the dire consequences to society when people begin to believe that by
renaming someone to erase their humanity opens the door to the
devaluation of everyone's life..."-dscott

I'll note that I did answer your question.

The Social Security system's ponzi scheme is all IOUs, so regardless of whether the shyster class is able to put illegals' SS payments on the backs of honest taxpayers or not, ALL FICA payments -- legal and illegal -- have long ago been lost in a sea of red ink. That's the good news -- inflation defrauds illegals just like inflation defrauds the rest of the poor, if not worse, while Democrats stay silent and libertarians bitch about it & get silenced in the media. That's life in bias-land.

Unless the shysters actually lose their lawsuit and quit-suing, MY point stands, too. And because you only addressed the part of my comment beginning with "PS," I continue to wonder: "Is there any particular reason Democrats believe that people should be getting welfare while living here illegally?" And "Didn't the Democrats just perform all these proceedural shenanigans the Republicans are bitching-about in order to let Nancy Pelosi VOTE FOR MAKING ILLEGALS ELIGIBLE FOR WELFARE???"
JMR

The tax & spend drug war looks racist in the real world.

Dubya almost tried to make that IOU claim...

Sarcasmo,

...except the Constitution gets in the way.

Section 4. The validity of the public debt of the United States,
authorized by law, including debts incurred for payment of pensions and
bounties for services in suppressing insurrection or rebellion, shall
not be questioned.

Oh well...How about that Bob Barr for licker in chief?

Syrius

"...the dire consequences to society when people begin to believe that by
renaming someone to erase their humanity opens the door to the
devaluation of everyone's life..."-dscott

And that's not an answer to my questions.

Because there's nothing legally valid about some supposed debt to someone illegally here, and welfare has nothing at all to do with the US Constitution despite various blinkered judicial rulings to the contrary. I love how you had the chutzpah to use "authorized by law" in an argument specifically addressed to welfare for illegals, though. It's a nice, albeit over the top, touch.

I guess I will forever wonder: "Is there any particular reason Democrats believe that people should be getting welfare while living here illegally?" And "Didn't the Democrats just perform all these proceedural shenanigans the Republicans are bitching-about in order to let Nancy Pelosi VOTE FOR MAKING ILLEGALS ELIGIBLE FOR WELFARE???"
JMR

The tax & spend drug war looks racist in the real world.

My answer to your question...

Sarcasmo,

I have no idea if there is a reason for Democrats to believe that people should be getting welfare while living here illegally. Part of their general loving attitude or businesses in need of gov't subsidies, you got me...

I've been trying to find support for your assertion on Pelosi and cannot find any statements. Once again, the parlimentary maneuvers are being discussed today in Congress, nothing on their reasoning unless it was to stop the GOP from having a "victory". I do have to commend the Democrats, as the majority party, in allowing for an open hearing on their own mistakes. Gotta give 'em credit. It's a win/ win for the Dems even if they did screw up.

Syrius

"...the dire consequences to society when people begin to believe that by
renaming someone to erase their humanity opens the door to the
devaluation of everyone's life..."-dscott

It was like pulling teeth, but

This time you answered. Thanks. But I'd change that "loving" to something more like "trying once-again to buy votes, in this case from people who don't even have the ability to legally vote." I'm still amazed that this would even be a partisan controversy, but obviously it was, and that fact speaks volumes IMO.

The particular incident was apparently performed for Pelosi's personal benefit, according to one of the links up there, but she's not important for process or substance except that it was her vote that put them over the top. Assume it was any Democrat, since they all have a vote. It's still weird they'd want to fight about that. One might almost say the Democrats treat illegals better than Republicans treat libertarians these days...

Nothing of interest here, move along. Unless, of couse, it's a harmless comment by Trent Lott or President Bush gagging on a pretzel. Responsible "jounalists" all. But hey, that's the "liberal" way.

Just more of the juvenile boilerplate humor found on the left. It was mildly amusing - if not related to truth - oh, about seven years and ten million "jokes" ago. The left has a pathological need to pretend that they're the smart ones - suggesting a different truth entirely...

"Abstain from McCain"

gotta love it

Immature name calling and random M&M jokes? Clearly Republicans invented the myth of libs using school yard taunts as debate tactics.

Syrius,

When the "process" affects which laws are passed and which aren't, you bet it's relevant to the American people. You tell most people that someone "violated the procedure" by rigging a vote-count, and I guarantee it will get attention. Isn't that what the left still claims about Florida in 2000? That the pesky "procedure" was violated?

There's no way you can deny that the media would be all over this, from the moment it happened, if the Republicans had done the same.

And would you dismiss it so casually if that had been the case? I think not.

All over this? CNN and

All over this? CNN and MSNBC would pre-empt their regular programming; they would be following the hearings in real time; with a couple of anchors offering play-by-play opinion, along with interviews and commentary from whoever they could get....and a catchy banner logo like "Abuse of Power??" and the subhead "Historic hearings on Republican tactics."

And that would be all day long.

rhetorical question, right?

I mean you already know the answer. Duh!

legal definition--

This is clearly a matter of what the definition if "is" is. If "is" is is, then we have one situation. On the other hand , if we allow a horde (or is it clutch??) of lawyers to define the word, then "is" may not mean is.

This is serious business and must not be lightly dismissed, or mocked by people like me.

I did not, I repeat did not have a relationship with that woman. My mind was elsewhere during the entire incident and thus, ergo, forthwith, aformentioned  and a whole slew of middle English words which obfuscate and confuse people, I therefore prove it was not a relationship.

I remember the incident Noel has written about here. I was furious. I felt it was a complete violation of the American governmemtal process.

Tomorrow will see another Democratic travesty. Remember, it takes a village to really screw the American population.

misterb... This will not

misterb...

This will not even get a mention...and if we had a real conservative running he/she himself would mention this very important hearing tomorrow...and bring much needed attention to this very important matter...and he/she would do so LOUDLY with a press conference or whatever it took to get the word out.

Noel, thank you for this information or I would not even know about this...sure hope I can get it on C-Span via the computer because I have a feeling we may not be able to do this on regular C-Span unless you have C-Span 3....or if they replay it, it most likely will be on at two in the morning or such.

You are so right...this is historic...I cannot thank you enough.

Denying votes - isn’t that how dictatorships get started!  Between ‘Super Delegates’ and denying Congressional votes the people of this country should be very worried about the Democrats having majority control.

You've got that right...we always have about 35 RINOs that vote with the dems no matter what most times...and the so-called conservative dems that came into office from the '06 election usually always vote with the left side too...it is absolutely disgusting.

I remember this well too....I don't remember who voted where now...but there is a record if anyone wants to bother to look it up.

CONGRESSIONAL TERM LIMITS!!!

Dee Bunk, down here...just to clear up some things...

Dee Bunk,

So, back to my point that we don't need all the manufacturing jobs
brought back here. With the 5% unemployment (considered by many
economists to be full employment), the vast majority of manufacturing
jobs would only be filled by illegals if brought back because people
are happier doing something else. Where's this job retraining that you
liked so much before?

You're assumptions are breathtaking... We don't need the manufacturing jobs? The jobs will only be filled by illegals? People are happier doing something else?

First of all, this country was founded by producing things. Are we to be plundered of all of our raw materials like a third world country and have those materials shipped to another country to be made into products to sell back to us? FYI-We used to do that to other countries...cheap raw materials made into products to sell to the world. We have sold out to the Chinese. Look around the next time you're at WalMart. As for the illegals, start with enforcement of the ones hiring the illegals. If a job doesn't exist they cannot work. There are many unemployed workers who take pride in bringing home the "bacon".

I enjoyed your personal story and can, get this, relate to it on a personal level. For my great-great grandparents, great grandparents, grandparents were from the hardy stock of farmers, coal miners, steel workers, aircraft assemblers, utility workers, oh yeah, some fought in WW 1, WW 2, & Korea. Parents and other living members fought in Vietnam, Bosnia, Kosovo, and now the current events in Iraq & Afghanistan. So, my point is not everyone goes off to college, not everyone is an officer in the military, not everyone is a manager of a company, not everyone is unhappy with their lives and how things came to be...So, continue to think about the pride of American worker when you buy something manufactured here in the Good ol' US of A.

Syrius - the bottom line is that Corporations are in Business

to make money not provide jobs. They go where the demand for the jobs is the greatest. The demand for low paying jobs isn't that great here. It's as simple as that. If you want to start a company for the purpose of providing jobs and risk all of your money then go right ahead and let me know how that works out for you. I can't imagine that it will last long.

I appreciate that you were not as obnoxious with your last post, but this is a fundamental difference that we won't agree on. I believe in free markets and capitalism and you want socialism. I hope if you ever do get your socialism that you will be volunteering for the factory job. Me myself, I'm going to volunteer to be a movie star. Hopefully Leon can clean the toilets. ; )

Actually, Dee, I did do just that...

Dee,

I bought an old company and rebuilt it. I'm one of those who provide jobs to those who want them. I do not hire illegals. I give back to my employees and the community I serve. I provide assistance to those who need it. I love what I do and the community in which I live. My work ethic and entrepreneurial skills were honed when I was young. My family couldn't provide me with what I wanted so I worked for it. I put myself through school and only relied on myself. It is about risk, putting it out there so to speak. There is a distinct difference between those who punch a clock and those who provide the clock to be punched. Call me a socialist if you want, you would be wrong. I'm an optimistic opportunistic business owner. People only get bored when they don't have a job to do. People like to work.

Your total support of free markets and capitalism, not that there is anything wrong with it and I'm not being snarky, is based on Milton Friedman and Adam Smith, correct? and if so, would you agree with an understanding that "the heavy fist of government becomes too
overbearing and intrusive, it stifles the unlimited wealth creation
process of a free people operating under a free enterprise system."? If so, how does the current conservative movement support the past 8 years of the Bush administration's expansion of the government and abhorrent spending practices? If you want free markets and the expansion of capitalism, this doesn't seem to be in line with previous economic practices from Friedman and Smith. Just a thought...

Syrius

And for the recordy Syrius

I don't doubt that you could own a business. It's the business that is in business for the purpose of providing jobs (lots of them) that I have a hard time with.

But your little stories did reveal you to be the snob that I thought you were. Telling me to go punch a clock. I have punched a clock before and I'd do it again if I had to. I don't think anything less of anyone who punches a clock. My husband punches a clock and I'm not ashamed of it.

»→ Damn right Dee

And God bless those entrepreneurs who provide the jobs to those of us who have neither the inclination nor the desire to be self employed.

Thanks for the jokes...About the toilet...

Dee,

For some reason I had thought of you as a man instead of a woman...my bad, I'm assuming the impossibility again. Did ya know?...when discussing Leon and his new job, statistics show it not to be true...here's a heart warming story...possibly true!-

Toilet cleaning as performance art

by Patrice Lewis

Let's have a show of hands from everyone who loves to clean their toilets.

(Pause.)

Come come, don't be shy. Raise those hands.

(Longer pause.)

OK, I think we can conclude that cleaning toilets is not high on anyone's list of Really Fun Things to do.

Then why do we clean our toilets? The answer is obvious: We like
clean toilets. If someone drops by for coffee, it's nice to know the bathroom won't shame us.

Now let's try another experiment: Raise your hand if you can tell me
who is more likely to clean those toilets – a man or a woman?

(Pause while the writer reels back to avoid all the upraised hands.)

OK, you there in the blue shirt, what's your answer? … A woman? Right you are!

It's true that women do most of the dirty chores in a house. No matter how liberated we are, it's a fact that women do more housework.

Facts are funny things. You can rail and scream and fight, but facts don't change. Women do more housework.

Why? Because we like our toilets clean. We might complain about it, but we prefer clean toilets to dirty ones.

We all have household
chores that some might call "drudgery." Dishes, laundry, vacuuming,
dusting, cooking – these need to be done. Traditionally women were the
ones who did this because women took pride in a clean home.

Then women started entering the workplace. Attitudes started
changing. Women were told they were wasting their intellect by being
housewives and mothers (eeww, yuck). No, it was a far better thing to
park the kids in day care and spend eight hours a day filing briefs or
punching computer keys.

Housework and mothering became something humiliating. Women should
be ashamed to clean toilets. It's better to hire someone (another
woman, presumably) to do that lowly task for us. Women should be
ashamed to wipe baby bottoms. It's better to hire someone (another
woman, presumably) to raise our kids for us. We have careers to
conquer! Software to design! Surgeries to perform! Advertising
campaigns to plan! We don't have time to clean our homes or raise our
kids!

OK, time for a different outlook. What if – just try to wrap your
mind around this concept – what if chores can be looked at as a joyous thing in the larger picture?

What if I am not merely keeping my toilets cleaned and my dishes washed and my kids at home? What if I'm conducting a piece of performance art dedicated to creating an atmosphere of love and friendship?

Hey, presto! It works! When my dishes are done and my toilets are
clean, I am calm and happy when friends (or even strangers) stop in. We
have coffee; we relax and visit. Our kids are included (since we
homeschool), and adults and children can talk and get to know each
other better. The house smells like baking bread and simmering soup.
Try doing that in a day care or office.

Which scenario do you think your kids prefer being raised in?

Being a lowly housewife despite my educational status (master's
degree in the biological sciences) affords me an unbelievable
satisfaction. My dedication to this performance art results in an
unstressed and happy life for my family. We are moderate-to-low income,
but that's OK. Part of my performance art includes the science of
frugality and thrift.

A neighbor who takes her performance art to an even higher level
reports that visitors unfamiliar with domestic tranquility are awed. If
they are cynical of the joys of home because they were raised in day
care by career-minded parents They depart rejuvenated and burning with
a zeal to try this kind of performance art themselves.

Because – let's face it – nobody leaves their office after a hard
day's work and wishes they had a more cold and sterile environment to
come home to. No, they want the smell of baking bread and simmering
soup and a happy, welcoming family.

With one spouse making a living and the other spouse making the
living worthwhile, performance art can be a beautiful thing indeed.

There's an old story about three men moving stones. A traveler asks
the first man, "What are you doing?" The man snarls back, "What does it
look like I'm doing? I'm moving these stupid rocks around."

The traveler asks the second man what he is doing. The man shrugs
and replies, "What does it look like I'm doing? I'm building a wall."

The traveler asks the third man
what he is doing. The man gives him a beatific smile, lifts up his eyes
and says, "What does it look like I'm doing? I'm building a cathedral."

Because my family does so much of our living here in our home (we
have a home business as well as homeschool), we often have controlled
chaos. Our place is a fixer-upper, so you might say our "cathedral" is
perpetually under construction.

So when sheet-rock dust is falling on a doll city of blocks, and the
dogs have discovered the box of crackers left on the pantry floor, and
the cat decides he just has to hack up that hairball on a
pile of folded laundry, and the neighbor kids come pouring in asking
for hot chocolate after sledding, and the kitchen table
is piled with math books, a half-finished science project and six
encyclopedias … we try to remember all of these are blessings.

My effort at domesticity is an evolving thing. The house is not
always clean. The toilets are not always scrubbed, the floors vacuumed,
or the dishes washed. But in the grand scheme of things, I try to build
a cathedral with my performance art instead of merely piling rocks.

We all have chores. Sometimes they're irksome, tiring and dirty. Sometimes we wish we could just shove them onto someone else.

But take pride while moving your stones. They have to be moved anyway, so you may as well build a cathedral with them.

You might even say there's an art to it.

Unless you decide it's time to go out and hire an illegal!!!

Gosh, that was funny!!!

That is funny upcountry

Were you here when Leon (under one of his aliases) would tell stories about some hot foreign chick that he was with?

Liberals are always trying to portray themselves as something they are not. They don't realize that most conservatives prefer people as themselves and don't worship people because of their status like they do.

Dee B. Yea Libs live in dreamland, a very dangerous place.

Leon stories, what apiece of work.. gunslinger lol bye-bye..

Any unnamed exotic foreign land..great place.. USA sucks.

I've been out of this country. USA is a Great Country!

The dream business these libs come up with.. The only way they would work, is Trust funding, Grant money ( unlikely) etc. Because profit is EVIL to them..

In the business world there are only two ways to make money: Service (and) or Product.

Of course they got to give a "I'm way above you comment" of some sort ( punch time clock)

Then the attacks on the Oil, Nuk, Coal.. As if french fries will power the world...

Their dreamland = burma!

Upcountry, you too, can make it if you try...

UPC,

Since we are in joke mode and nothing is for real...

I Lied About Making $80,000 Working From Home... And So Can You!

DO YOU WANT TO MAKE MORE MONEY? Have you ever dreamed about working
from the comfort of your own home? Do you wish you could be your own
boss, working as much or as little as you like?

I know I've had these thoughts, but that kind of success always
seemed out of my reach. After all, what chance do I have of striking it
rich? I'm almost 40 with NO SKILLS, NO COLLEGE EDUCATION, and NO
CREDIT. Well, that's precisely why I developed the Instant Money
Invention Plan. It changed my life... in an instant! From the very
first day, I was able to tell my friends and neighbors that I made
$80,000 a year working from home! It was SO EASY! I needed NO SPECIAL
TRAINING, and there were NO STARTUP COSTS.

With the Instant Money Invention Plan, you, too, can tell people
that you've achieved financial independence without even breaking a
sweat. DO NOT miss out on this amazing opportunity!

To get you started right away, call for our special informational
packet. You'll learn everything you need to know to convince people you
are making more money than you've ever dreamed possible. Soon, you'll
be saying, "It was so easy!" and "It only took a few minutes a day!"
and "Finally, I have the home and car I've always wanted!"

How does it work, you ask? It's simple! All you have to do is make
up a story about your AMAZING FINANCIAL SUCCESS. Soon, everyone you
know will hear how you made $7,000 in your first month!

Do you own a computer? Do you know the location of a gas station
with a copy machine? If the answer to either question is yes, you can
send letters to thousands of people you don't know and tell them YOU
ARE MAKING YOUR DREAMS COME TRUE! What are you waiting for?

Wouldn't you like to see your picture in newspapers and magazine
ads? Could you imagine seeing your glowing recommendation for the
Instant Money Invention Plan in a mass e-mail originating from an
untraceable location? Everyone will hear about the fortune you claim
you made!

Why slave away at a job, barely eking out a living, when you could
have any salary you dream of? How much money do you want to say you
make? $25,000? $250,000? $1 MILLION? How about $500 KAZILLION? THE
SKY'S THE LIMIT! If you can say the number, you can tell people that's
how much money you make!

Best of all, you will pay NO TAXES. And, because you are not taking
in any money, this plan is 100% legal. The Instant Money Invention Plan
may not be ethical, but it is TOTALLY LEGAL!

This is NOT a multi-level marketing scam. It is not one of those
make-money-at-home schemes that don't work. You will not be selling
term life insurance. You will not be selling a bunch of worthless
products nobody wants. With the amazing Instant Money Invention Plan,
you will not be selling ANYTHING. All you will be doing is lying.
That's all!

Thousands of Americans receive tax-free money from the government
for education, new businesses, and so on. But the problem with these
money-making schemes is YOU DON'T QUALIFY. You would have to actually
go to school or start a business to get a piece of that pie. But can
you lie? YES, YOU CAN! You've done it a million times in your life, to
a million people—your ex-wife, your parents, the departmental
supervisor at your former job. With the Instant Money Invention Plan,
all you have to do is lie about something else... your salary!

Wouldn't it be great to work from the comfort of your own
living-room couch, sitting back and watching the money roll in? Of
course it would. Unfortunately, there's no such thing. But I'm not
talking about some get-rich-quick scheme. I am talking about FOOLING
PEOPLE into THINKING you've gotten rich quick.

Wouldn't you like to call up that pretty girl you've had your eye on
and say, "Let's go on a luxury Caribbean vacation next month, my
treat"? As long as the date for the cruise is far enough in the future,
you've got no problems. Why? Because THE FUTURE IS WIDE OPEN. After
all, no one can call you a liar and confront you about something that
hasn't happened yet.

What do you want? A beach house? A new sports car? Your own private
jet? It could all be yours in the future! It's up to YOU to start
talking about it TODAY!- a little tidbit from a reliable internet news organization! For our amusement!

I'm one of those who provide
jobs to those who want them.

With A trust fund or grant money

My work
ethic and entrepreneurial skills were honed when I was young.

gathering food stamps and welfare.

My family

The only time i've ever heard that word used in a sentence is: "opportunistic disease".
