Meet the 'Hippy-crites': Green Celebs Who Don't Practice What They Preach

For years, NewsBusters has been telling readers how much better the foreign press are at covering both sides of the global warming debate.

On Tuesday, Britain's Daily Mail published a perfect example of this maxim with a delicious piece about "hippy-crites": those pompous, holier-than-thou movie stars that go around the world advocating environmental causes and reducing one's carbon footprint while they themselves emit more carbon dioxide in a year than the average person will his entire life.

Here are a few of my favorites (h/t NBer Blonde, picture right courtesy Daily Telegraph, others courtesy Daily Mail):

Be sure to read the entire piece for more "hippy-crite" sightings.

While doing so, ask yourself why America's media won't en masse address this issue? Could it be that they'd have to expose the biggest "hippy-crite" of them all, none other than Nobel Laureate Al Gore:

Yeah, they couldn't do that.

Ack!

Noel, you know I love you hon, but please fix the headline...celebs *who* don't practice what they preach.

Candance

Candance,

Well, I've changed it because it makes a better headline. However, one of my first editors -- none other than the MRC's Dan Gainor -- I believe would disagree with you. He told me years ago that "that" was much more appropriate that "who" in such a context.

As a result, I always use "that". ns

LOL

I tried to change my post and it wouldn't let me! Now I know why.

Grrrr @ Dan Gainor. Get with the times!

Wont Get Fooled Again by

Wont Get Fooled Again by The That...

Nah, that doesn't work. But who does?

Vote 4 change. Vote 4 anything. See Jack & Mr Shy's first campaign ad for the ONLY viable 3rd party candidate.

I saw an Owl and for some

I saw an Owl and for some strage reason all  I heard form it was  "that that .......that that "

 -Thomas Jefferson

Noel...really?

Since I have never edited anything, I guess I would have to defer to Mr. Gainor. But "who" sounds best to me because you are referring to people...

I would have to defer to my

I would have to defer to my high school English teacher who was a grammar nazi...and "who" is correct.

The few

The world is filled with hypocrites. Dante wrote about it centuries ago. He put them far down in Hell. Look at Hillary's recent criticism of the rich. The woman is worth over 100 million and her daughter works on the very Wall Street she condemns. Arnold wants to make California "green" while he takes a jet to work every day. The beat goes on. A handful of people control all the wealth in the world. Listen to them at your own peril. Think for yourself. And don't ever feel "guilty"; they don't.

NEVER,NEVER trust a "liberal"

believe it or not noel...

i completely agree with you. self-important celebs are sometimes goaded into endorsing causes. the ultra-wealthy think that keeping the house under 15,000 square feet is some kind of sacrifice.

BUT (you knew there was a 'but' coming)...

is some effort better than no effort? i say give whoever kudos for making an effort and continue to criticize them for being hypocrites, simultaneously.

i'll kick the driver of a hummer in the butt whether he's a commie or libertarian. trying to improve air quality... do liberals really corner the market on the effort? i'd like to think any responsible citizen (and mos def, parent) wants to make the air easier to breathe for themselves, their kids and their neighbours.

less talk, more action. living by example is much better than giving speeches.

Poll

If there were such a thing as an honest poll, I think it would find that most people are quite cynical these days. In my opinion, celebrities, all of them, simply make things worse by their preaching. I am one who bellieves that they should just shut up. The "average" citizen is not as unaware as the "elites" seem to believe they are.. He/she knows that these people are all rich and feel entiltled to waste the wealth they have accumulated. But they really recent the condescension, especially because, in most cases, their wealth had nothing to do with their brain power.

NEVER,NEVER trust a "liberal"

I agree...I always wonder

I agree...I always wonder what a celebs thought process when they think they know more about the enviroment, politics, science, history, etc. than the average person. You make movies, you sing songs, you write stories...that's your bread and butter. Stick to that and I'll have some respect for you.

I have yet to hear one

I have yet to hear one intelligent or even borderline-lucid explanation of how CO2 hurts the environment.

It's not enough that a result of increased CO2 is increased plant growth and fruit/vegetable production (which in turn helps to feed more people in underdeveloped countries)   It seems that the realization of such philanthropic side-effects of CO2 production came dangerously close to making the earth a safer place for everyone, not just the over-priveleged.

Good thing someone came along with a way to avoid any such benefit: take away available food sources and quickly turn them into fuel for hybrid cars, thereby speeding up the starvation and death of little children who until now have greedily picked through the dirt for grains of rice to eat.

"Cry havoc and let slip the dogs of war"  - Shakespeare

It's absolutely ridiculous

It's absolutely ridiculous that they even got CO2 classified as a "pollutant" when trees and other plants actually need it to live! Then they talk about "light pollution" and "noise pollution."

And these celebs just keep proving my theory that this is just like paying for electricity every month. Those who can afford to buy "offsets" get to use all they want because they can afford it. The rest of us are supposed to cut back and make the sacrifices. Or they consider that their "work" is vital to the rest of us and the planet, so they are allowed to splurge.

After all, their "carbon offsets" are made up in the cutbacks they fly around the world urging others to make!

How soon they forget

"Those who can afford to buy "offsets" get to use all they want because
they can afford it. The rest of us are supposed to cut back and make
the sacrifices. Or they consider that their "work" is vital to the rest
of us and the planet, so they are allowed to splurge.
"

It's just like during the Civil War when the affluent elites in Congress enacted legislation that allowed people to purchase "deferments" to the draft for $300.00, which was about a year’s salary for the average man in those days.

Just like then, Carbon Credits today means that only the affluent can afford to pay a small amount of their considerable wealth so they and their children can avoid the sacrifices they, themselves try to foster onto others. All in the name of the common good, of course.

Here's one for you Helen

Well Helen, it makes my nose tickle as it leaves my beer and that can't be good for me. Of course that is not a problem with earth friendly Guinesss Extra-stout or Youngs Double Chocolate Stout (Nitrogenated instead of Carbonated).

How's that?

HelenS

"take away available food sources"

You are so right. Shakespeare also wrote that "Truth is Truth".  Unfortunately, the hypocritical ideologues on the left don't want to hear the truth of what you are saying. After all, it's easy to spew "words" when you don't have to suffer the consequences.

"Words pay no debts"--Shakespeare

NEVER,NEVER trust a "liberal"

I have yet to hear one

I have yet to hear one intelligent or even borderline-lucid explanation of how CO2 hurts the environment

Not suggesting this is inteligent, but the thinking is that CO2 holds in heat unlike Nitrogen, Oxygen, or Hydrogen (other common gasses in our "air"). This has been explored in labs, but the Earth has few (million) more varibles then a lab will ever be able to simulate.

"Television is a freak show" Bernie Goldberg

Fed up!

I have to say I'm fed up with celebs telling me to conserve while they jet around the world burning more fuel in a month than I do in a year. Cast the beam out of your eye before you tell me to remove the mote in mine!  Thanks Noel!

Liberal Manifesto

I think being a hypocrite must be part of the genetic make-up of a liberal/socialist. In fact I think I'll reread Das Kapital. There must be a chapter about in there.

I think this is more of that

I think this is more of that elitist thing that has reared it's ugly head so high this year. These kind of people think they're here only to guide the "little people" - not actually do any of the yucky things that they themselves admonish us peasants to do. They're so arrogant, that they probably think they're excused, as worshipped celebrities, from actually participating in the "carbon savings". I think that's probably why "carbon offsets" were created - so they could buy their way out of it.

I think many celebs profess

I think many celebs profess a green life because it makes them more "human," even though they don't always lead that life.

I also think that living green means living as efficiently you can within the framework of your life. Brad and Angelina fly a lot. But is it excessive given their lives? I'm sure senators fly a lot, CEOs. But it's a necessary part of their lives. If you're Travolta, flying a gigantic plane for no reason, however, then you're being an idiot.

funny

Bal's explanation: it's okay to be extravagant and wasteful if you're important enough to deserve it.

Do you conserve energy in

Do you conserve energy in any way? Do you recycle?

I'm sure she does some

I'm sure she does some things.  And I don't hear her preaching at anyone else about what they should do.

OMG Bal

Your response is to challenge my own sincerety?

I'm all about cutting out wasteful things, running too much water in the washing machine, leaving lights on during the day, keeping the AC down too low.

As far as recycling, I reuse plastic bags around my house, bring my groceries home in cloth bags, keep original boxes to pack things, and give old clothing to charity instead of throwing them away.

I also walk to stores and restaurants when they're close enough to comfortably walk there - to save money at the gas station.

This is not just stuff I'm making up...I'd place my hand on a Bible if you came to my house and asked me. And I've been this way for years, global warming or not. It's not stuff I do out of fear of drowning or guilt for the polar bears. It's common sense, saving money on the bills, and being a good steward of resources. My Mom raised me to be that way.

I do think it's sad that most Americans are so wasteful they have to be scared of drowning to death to get them to change, and then we all end up with rations and high prices as punishment.

You cannot convince me that Brad and Angelina deserve to fly in private jets two and three times a day. Only Spiderman is needed at that many different places at once.

What do you do for the environment?

Spiderman uses his own

Spiderman uses his own transportation.

True, but is his web

True, but is his web bio-degradable?

Always wondered that. What

Always wondered that. What happens to the web?

It sticks to New

It sticks to New Yorkers shoes and makes them very cranky...

By the way, you said "given their lives". Isn't environmentalism all about adjusting lifestyles? I mean, they choose the lifestyle they lead - more so than most other people.

I meant given their lives

I meant given their lives in terms of their occupation, its requirements, its burdens.

I guess where I come out on this is, if you can afford a big house, buy a big house. But you don't have to have every light on 24 hours a day in that house. Own three houses, but same thing. Buy a plane. But don't use it to take just you a half hour down the road.

How about take a commercial

How about take a commercial flight and sit in First Class? How about, live as lavish a lifestyle as you can afford, but don't pretend you are living an "eco-friendly" life and, most certainly, don't lecture others to live their lives that way. That's the point of this post - no one is jumping on the lifestyles of the rich and famous until they start acting like big ol' hypocrites.

Balboa makes excuses for Celebrity Hypocrites

This is so absolutely pathetic that you are seriously trying to defend the hypocrites. The environmental "green" movement is self-defeating for celebrities or anyone with wealth and there is nothing you can do about it. No amount of excuses or BS is going to change the fact that they use more energy then the average person and emit more CO2 due to their lifestyle. This is why I love "green" celebrities so much, they are such easy marks. Keep spinning Balboa it only makes you look more and more ridiculous.

"Abstain from McCain"

He does do it well

Spidy's Web

Let's hope he doesn't do what the normal spiders do and EAT IT when he's finished using it.

I didn't ask to point

I didn't ask to point fingers or anything, just to make a point that there is a point where conservation efforts just don't make sense in the greater scheme of your life. You don't walk 20 miles to go to a store, you don't use candle light instead of electricity, even those things would save energy.

I think everyone has those points in their individual lives. Brad and Angelina hopefully try to conserve as much energy as makes sense. But it's not the same point for everyone. I don't think the idea is to put everyone at the same level of energy use; we're not Amish. I think it's for people to look at their lives and see where they can be more efficient.

I don't know if I'm explaining this well or not.

not so much

I live as frugally as I can but I do *not* preach at others. I don't look down on folks in central America with no electricity and tell them, "you need to do something to cut back your carbon footprint. Maybe you can start bathing twice a week instead of every day."

Why not? We're all just taking our individual living standard and bringing it down a few notches. Isn't that what you're endorsing?

Good thing Brad and Angelina are wealthy enough that they can sacrifice without noticing any actual sacrifice. Too bad working class people will have to start walking to work as their fair share of sacrifice.

Good points, especially

Good points, especially about preaching to others.

seriously though

If global warming is to be believed, how many people will soon be forced to burn candles, walk to the store, and dry their clothes outside just to offset Brad and Angie's airplanes? The more they waste, the bigger the burden on everyone else to do without.

Why don't they feel guilty for that? If this thing is life or death, why they expect us to save them from themselves?

Don't you see how big a scam this all is? How convenient that it's all a big emergency, but not big enough to ban private jets. It's just enough to force us all to lower our standard of living.

Oh I get the hypocrisy, and

Oh I get the hypocrisy, and I've never quite bought into the whole global warming scare. I do what I can, recycle, I don't have every light in the house on, that kind of stuff. And as I said at the top, I think a lot of celebrities say "Yeah, go green!" because they believe it makes them appear more sincere, not because they're REALLY interested in conservation.

Every comment about their

Every comment about their hypocristy was rebutted by you with a rationalization. Now you say you see the hypocrisy, and don't even buy into global warming.

So you're basically saying you were arguing just for the sake of argument?

Jeez.

No, I was saying that if

No, I was saying that if you want to, you can see hypocrisy in anyone who says they're for conservation. Some people feel they're living efficiently in different ways, according to their lives.

Candace don't fall for the Guilt Trap

Balboa is using emotionally loaded statements to put you on the defensive. This is how most liberals sucker good mannered people into going along with their propaganda.

What you stated initially was 100% correct and he tried to shift the argument to you.

The Anti 'Man-Made' Global Warming Resource

Amen! My county went all

Amen!

My county went all out a few years ago with recycling. Our costs to the taxpayer doubled the very next year.

"Abstain from McCain"

That is because you should "feel" bad

It doesn't matter how much it costs I mean they don't want you to look at the actual numbers or the facts about recycling they just want you to "feel" bad and guilty so you are doing something for the "environment". Because we all know in our spare time we burn down forests for fun and dump toxic chemicals into drinking water supplies. I mean us conservatives don't want or use the outdoors we just want to pollute and be wasteful. We should feel so bad that much of the world's population is stupid and unsuccessful and not enjoy our success. In a socialist utopia we are all equally stupid and unsuccessful.

The Anti 'Man-Made' Global Warming Resource

good for your county.

costs doubled? and still it doesn't pay for the the real cost of tossing of the garbage. how about a proper assessment on the costs of manufacturing a single-use, plastic drink container, including the proper disposal (that doesn't mean throwing into a landfill) and then charge the purchaser. that way the taxpayer doesn't have to foot the bill. but the beverage companies don't want that. so they kick in piddly amounts toward recycle programs and spread the company's and user's expense on everyone. essentially, the taxpayer subsidizes the guy drinking his coke.

refillable bottles are alive and well in many countries.

abp, that because the lawyers don't sue them out of existence

Major tort reform is needed in this country to get the bottlers back in the business of true recycling (reuse of bottles, filled with beer, coke etc.)..

Find a cigerette butt in a refilled bottle... Sue em for 100 million.

Or ask for a free new refilled bottle...

Now you know why ALL companies in the USA never re-fill.

t'is true

Q: whadda ya call 1000 lawyers at the bottom of the ocean?

 A: a good start.

Recycling

Recycling, ever hear of it? It’s what most intelligent people do with their plastics these days. You see, most of the plastics used in bottles are recycled into other plastic products which cuts back on the need to use virgin plastics in manufacturing. Most communities here have plastic recycling programs, along with metal and glass products.

Also, plastic is better than glass bottles as plastic doesn't shatter when you drop it. Glass is know for that and it's also know for causing deep wounds that require medical attention because glass has VERY sharp edeges when broken. So, you may think we're fools for using plastics, but at least the kids aren't requiring stitches because the cuts they used to receive from glass bottles any more and we're saving a fortune on emergency care expenses every day.

.

i just brought my son home after getting 7 stitches

not caused by glass, just a schoolyard accident. it was taken care of in a private clinic (in the caribbean), for a mere $250. which included a follow-up & redressing.

A/ i doubt there has been a study of the cost of glass bottle cut costs vs, recycling plastic, if so please share.

B/ there are many glass bottled beverages. they are thinner and more likely to break. very few are refilled.

C/ most glass is made to shatter into little pieces which can cut but aren't like the old days when returnable bottles broke into long shards.

D/ the returnable beer bottle programme in ontario canada saves huge on the environment and is a model for other beverages. i am ashamed when i watch dozens of empty beer bottles get thrown away, elsewhere.

E/ there are an increasing number of studies which has identified that we are poisoning our children with baby bottles and poisoning ourselves by using plastic single-use bottles which should not be reused. folks, do NOT reuse water bottles. empty 'em and toss 'em.

give people the option glass or bottle. but CHARGE people the cost of recycling their plastic bottle. if the real cost was borne, people would be reaching for the refillable containers.

Landfills are cost effective and safe

It is cheaper to throw it away then to recycle it. Recyling wastes money so people can feel good about doing something pointless.

Mmmm....still can't buy

Mmmm....still can't buy it.  It's still hypocrisy when they feel the need to preach to us "flyovers" (ironic term, eh?).  If these celebs can't walk the walk, they should have the decency to see the irony and stop preaching.

It could be unrelated, but do you think Hollywood's record lows in ticket sales could have any corelation to America's intolerance of hypocrite celebrities who often can't manage the mess of their own lives?

It's definitely hypocrisy.

It's definitely hypocrisy. I'm just saying that it's impossible to hold everyone to the exact same standard of energy usage and conservation.

And no, I don't think ticket sales are related to this.

The standards aren't being promoted by most CEOs, though

They're largely being promoted by these self-righteous Hollyweird hypocrites with CEO-sized carbon outputs. The hypocrisy is the problem, not the huge differences in carbon output. If some celeb who believes what I believe (the closest are probably either Penn or Teller, if I had to guess, and they hate flying so they stay in Vegas) wants to fly around alone in a plane, that's fine with me. In fact, I'd like it if they decided to endure flying to Florida. What's not fine is if they fly constantly and preach about why I shouldn't do the same thing at the same time. "STFU and sing/act" is all we're saying.

The tax & spend drug war looks racist in the real world.

More Balboa Propaganda!

Are you kidding me? So Celebrities are "entitled" to use more energy than the average person!!!! Unbelievable! When any one of these celebrity eco-hypcrites uses as much energy as I do, get back to me on "conservation". What propaganda.

It's a "two Americas"

It's a "two Americas" scenario, bal. The "haves" do whatever they
please, and buy "carbon offsets" to salve their consciences. The
"have-nots" have to make sacrifices.

Here's a thought, in your own line of thinking: Was it "necessary"
for them to go to Nice? They could've taken a vacation closer to
home...of are they too important to make that sacrifice that a lot o
middle-class families will make this summer?

I don't know if it was

I don't know if it was necessary, but was it excessive or irresponsible? That's the problem.

In my opinion, yes it was.

In my opinion, yes it was. They didn't need to go to France for their vacation.  And if they are so worried about the planet, then yes, it was irresponsible too.

They like to preach to others about what's "excessive." Everyone's idea of "excessive" is different. So what gives them the right to act high and mighty? I do what I can in my life; I assume others do also. They seem to think they don't have to sacrifice (driving a Prius is not a "sacrifice").

I remember Streisand saying we should dry our clothes outside on a line. Do you imagine she has a clothesline in her back yard?

barbara what a goddess

now that i have your attention.

for the record i cannot stand barbara S.

that said, whether she does it or not, hanging clothes on the line is a great thing to do. just cuz she's a cow and has someone else dryclean (terrible for the environment) everything for her, doesn't mean the act is without merit.

what is really sad is there are actually places in canada (and i assume the US), where hanging out your clean laundry is against by-laws. that kinda crap needs to be repealed, yesterday.

I think John Ravolting should start flying a Prius.

What the American people are looking for is somebody who can solve their problems. - Barack Obama, April 27, 2008

Good grief...cut Angelina

Good grief...cut Angelina some slack.  Her "addiction to jet travel" is no doubt largely a consequence of her numerous visits to countries around the globe in furtherance of her splendid and dedicated efforts involving refugee relief and charitable endeavors on behalf of various UN agencies.

By all accounts, her role is not simply nominal or a product of Hollywood chic or celebrity diletantism, but reflective of a deep commitment to make a real difference in the lives of those less fortunate.  She has been to Iraq twice in connection with refugee issues--conferring with Iraqi officials, meeting with General Petraeous, and finding time to mingle with the troops.

I suppose she could travel by steamship, but I'm not going to condemn her for avoiding that or the public spectacles which would surely accompany commerical flights.  Opting for private jet travel so she can best continue her important and laudable international outreach will garner no objection from me.  I'm awarding the Daily Mail a five-star cheap shot.
