Writer Stephen King: If You Can't Read, You'll End Up in the Army or Iraq

Remember shortly before Election Day 2006 when Sen. John Kerry (D-MA) suggested that if you don't get a good education, "you get stuck in Iraq" (video available here)?

Well, last month, famed horror author Stephen King was speaking in front of a group of high school students at the Library of Congress, and he virtually made the exact same statement.

For those that can bear it, what follows is another in a long line of liberal media members bashing the military (embedded right, h/t Terry Ann):

I don't want to sound like an ad, a public service ad on TV, but the fact is if you can read, you can walk into a job later on. If you don't, then you've got, the Army, Iraq, I don't know, something like that. It's, it's not as bright. So, that's my little commercial for that.

Nice sentiment when the nation is at war, Stephen.

matt,

Now THAT's entertainment! Very funny. Nicely done. :-) ns

Overated author.  His

Overated author.  His books suck.  He sucks.

Liberalism is a convenient lie.

My take on it...

"The fact is if you love the country and its freedoms, you can join the military. If you
don't, then you've got, Hollywood, writing schlock horror, I don't know, something like
that. It's, it's not as worthwhile."

www.rhjunior.com Great comics with a hefty dose of Christian and anti-nutjob goodness.

"With your mind as high as Mt. Fuji you can see all things clearly. And you can see all the forces that shape events; not just the things near to you." -Miyamoto Musashi

he may have money but..........

I guess his education didn't keep him from drug addiction or being smart enough to get out of the street to avoid getting run over.

Democrats are either Parasites or Parasite Enablers

That's funny

It was a majority of the artsy types, the likes of this turd, that couldn't pass the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) when I was a military recruiter.

What a human piece of shit!

The Libs are so into

The Libs are so into themselves that they really think that people hang on their every word, like they're experts in politics.

I've never liked his books or short stories, and now, I don't like him. What a creep...

marpel, what do you expect?

marpel, what do you expect? We turn our politicians into "rock stars" so why not? It's a mutual admiration society...the politicos get high on socializing with the Hollywood set, and they, in turn, get their rush by hobnobbing with those in power.

Do you think Bill Clinton really wanted to hang around Babs Streisand for her policy expertise? She seems to think he did. LOL

LOL! So true, Motherbelt.

LOL! So true, Motherbelt. I guess that's why Bill was so successful in his time. He let those jackasses think he hung on their every word. Now that most of them want Obama, they could careless about Bill's wife. They eat their own, don't they? Geez.
What a spectacle!

Wow

That must be why I went in the Army.I cant read..well the junk he wrote.I read David Eddings and Terry Brooks.Different genre but still NYTimes best selling authors. We use to get college kids in occasionally.Always remember when handing them a tool to teach them the basics ...righty tighty..lefty ..loosey.Some would still try to put a 100lbs of torque on a 7/16 bolt. Can you say easy out.Elitist say the funniest things.

And if you can't write...

you end up talking to high school students.

<insert witty signature here>

I have thirty years

I have thirty years experience in the US Army, ARNG and USAR.  In all three the majority of NCO's and Warrants had Associates Degrees, Batchelor Degrees and these days most have post graduate degrees.  You don't have the schooling you don't get promoted.  Rotorhead, you have got that so right.

What Patriots these guys are.

Another celebrity opening his big mouth and inserting foot. The trashing of the military/veterans whether directly or indirectly never ceases from these cowards. I had several acquaintances who were Secret Service agents who related that when Gore was veep. He was being chauffered somewhere and his son was with him. Gore was castigating his son for poor grades. Gore said that if his grades didn't improve he would end up like (pointing at an agent) them.

Oh, I don't know...

...algore has done alright, and, umm, didn't he nearly flunk out of college? So, if my grades are crap, I could end up a rich ex-politician?!?!?!

The Lefts Arrogance is Abysmally Unpatriotic

I wonder if they (The left) ever thought about the fact that we are an all volunteer military.

That just maybe some of us care enough about our country and what she stands for to enlist. That maybe we joined because we think it is the right thing to do, not because we cannot get a job.

Some of the most intelligent, and gifted people I have ever known I have met in our military.

Every one in uniform should have a giant bonfire for his books!

Transformation is evident

Next he'll be talking about Waco and the little Gonzalez boy as he slowly morphs into Janet Reno.

Mica

I kept thinking he looked familiar but I couldn't place it. :) lol

GMTA, Mica! My first

GMTA, Mica! My first thought, seeing the still with the big arrow in the middle of the shot, was that it was Janet Reno....LOL..it wasn't until I saw the entire photo that I realized it wasn't.

Stop it. He's MUCH more attractive than Janet! :-) ns

Noel that's true,Heck

Noel that's true,

Heck when Will Ferrell played Janet Reno in his SNL skit he was more attractive than Janet Reno.

I got a scary book or movie idea for King...the whole idea of liberalism.

Noel, seeing as how NB is

Noel, seeing as how NB is being a watchdog about how to spell Pentecostal, you might want to correctly spell "author" in this blog ;)

Glad to know Stephen King doesn't support our troops! Just keeps proving the truth that liberals really don't care about or soldiers overseas.

The Rocky Mountain Collegian: Illustrating Idiocy

"auther" is most likely a

"auther" is most likely a typo...the Pentacostal thing was not only a spelling thing (also maybe a typo) but an improper use of the term. It's Church of the Pentecost. People who practice a certain type of Christianity are called "Pentecostals"

Currently the US Army has a

Currently the US Army has a higher literacy rate than the population at large.

It would be MORE fair of Mr King to say that if one wanted to avoid military service, one should avoid learning to read.

By the way Mr King, everyone I work with WANTS to be here, and not because it is the only place they can go.

Stephen King can't write

It's too bad Stephen King has forgotten how to write a good story. The only two books of his that were any good were "The Stand" and "Desperation".

"Hearts in Atlantis" was a

"Hearts in Atlantis" was a great book that they made into a bad movie.

Hearts in Atlantis is

Hearts in Atlantis is indeed a great book. It would be called literature if he wasn't considered a "commercial" writer.

A stunning achievement IMHO.

The fuuny thing... it's ususally liberals who look down on a writer like King.

And King is one of America's greatest living novelists (despite Cell).

But his politics suck ass. I honestly don't think he's been right in the head since he almost died when hit by a car.

Vote 4 change. Vote 4 anything. See Jack & Mr Shy's first campaign ad for the ONLY viable 3rd party candidate.

Why would liberals look

Why would liberals look down on King?

The Stand was great stuff, too. The movie of that was good for ONE scene (the opening with "Fear the Reaper").

I would like to read more of his stuff, but just haven't gotten around to it.

Tommy Knockers, good book

Tommy Knockers, good book and an OK movie.

Nuke em til they glow then shoot em in the dark.

Some people missed the "the 60's are over" memo...

If I were to make a list of my favorite books, Hearts in Atlantis and The Green Mile would be at the top.  I've read and re-read them each dozens of times and I like them more each time.  I've known for a long time that King's political viewpoints suck, but there is no denying his literary genius.

I guess I've just decided to put it aside.  With the exception of a few people, I'm generally still able to enjoy a movie or book, and ignore the personal politics of whoever made it.

I think that his comments regarding ignorant people joining the military stem from his (and other's) inability to move beyond the 60's and the draft.  That and a general air of elitism that causes them to think that the military only attracts violent brutes who don't fit anywhere else in society.  Some people just don't understand doing things because they are right or honorable-- the urge to cover their own a$$es by sticking their heads in the sand (physically possible for most of them) is greater.

My brother has a Masters and

My brother has a Masters and has been to Iraq. Elitists Gore and King fight imaginary boogeymen like global warming, no one has died from that. Cowards.

Let me at him...

Every officer in the United States Army (all branches) has a degree!  I was a sergeant in the Army and I have a master's degree.

Let me put this jerk in my line unit!!!!!!

Whenever I hear anyone arguing for slavery, I feel a strong impulse to see it tried on him personally.”  Abraham Lincoln

If this is a double post, forgive me

Both parents served in the Army with nursing degrees. Retired mom when she became pregnant with older brother. Dad served in 'Nam and retired after 20 years at the rank of major.

Hubby and I sing in comm. choir and yesterday's last song was "God Bless the U.S.A." Before we could even get half way through the song, the audience was standing in respect and pride. I was so overcome, I couldn't contiue the song. Some areas of the country have a pride in what the men and women are doing overseas and I for one will continue to say "Thank you" to each and every one who has served or is serving now and God bless you.

I wish you could.  This

I wish you could.  This imbecile needs to apologize to the very people (our military) who make it possible for him to do whatever he does and to thank them for the freedom he enjoys everyday.

And he does look like Janet Reno in drag.

Et, tu, Mr. King?

I can read.  I begged my uncle to read me "Pet Sematary" when I was a wee lass of 3.  Hey, it had a kitty on the cover!  I read "IT" in the 7th grade.  At this point in my life, I have just about every book Stephen King ever wrote, including several first editions.

Now comes the confusing thing, because I was in the Army, and in Iraq too.  Perhaps I read the wrong books?

Nebraskans for War: Peace through Strength

I use to read

and buy books by Patricia Cornwell until her last book had an Iraq war veteran as the killer. I was barely into the book when I realized that and I immediately tossed the book in the garbage can where it belonged and have since dumped her other books.

These comments sound similar to that guy...the comic who acts on one of the Law and Order shows who made similar comments "They're 19 and 20-year-old kids who couldn't get a job", oh yeah, belzer...these people are so condescending. They make me sick.

Elitists, everywhere! This

Elitists, everywhere! This is the year you remove the gags and shackles and let your true low opinion and absolute contempt for the American people be known! You have nothing to lose except your readers, voters, and viewers!

I have read and enjoyed some

I have read and enjoyed some of his books, but I would honestly have a hard time picking one up again after this. He really needs to apologize for this. I am often annoyed by his politics so I try not to read any interviews or articles. But anyone who cuts on those in the military, I am done with them as far as sending any money their way.

To all celebrities, author's musicians etc.

You guys make a lot of money entertaining people. That is your job. Please STFU in all other venues. It's kind of like the 60's. I knew all those musicians were leftie idiots but, God help me, I still liked the music. These outspoken idiots in Hollywood et al are making it hard for me to watch their work. Some of it is entertaining/good too.

NBers

NBers,

King has quite a following. You should see some of the hateful e-mail messages I'm receiving. ns

Maybe King Should Come Out of Hiding and Meet Servicemen

I suspect King's knowledge of the military comes from yellowing '60s propaganda pamphlets.

I taught hundreds of ROTC cadets (all services) at a major midwestern university.  They tended to be smart, diligent about their coursework, and given the risks of their future professions, rather reflective in a manner I wish more students were.  I would put them up against King any day in any subject -- we'd see who is smarter.

My work brings me into frequent contact with members of the military, many of them authors.  And most of those whose works I have read are much better writers than King.  Of course, what they write has a seriousness and purpose that King would know nothing of.

"but the fact is if you can

"but the fact is if you can read, you can walk into a job later on. If you don't, then you've got, the Army, Iraq, I don't know, something like that."

......and if your blind as a bat and wear coke bottles for glasses you end up marrying someone that look's like Tabitha or Stephen King. I love his book's though, even if he is a first class a-hole.

"You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy. We must be cautious. "

Me Three...

Love most of the books, Shawshank Redemption..Movie too, not bad.

How can a guy with an imagination like that, not have just a little common sense?

Wow!

I've heard that remark before

Is Mr. King guilty of plagiarism....stealing material from John Kerry. Well that's just pathetic.

Did he think that banner was serious?

You know, the one some troops in Iraq made up in 2004: "Halp us Jon Carry..."

Stephen King

Having read Stephen King once upon a time, and still counting The Stand as one of my favorite novels, this is appalling to say the least.

I guess my getting accepted to grad school contradicts his argument.

Res tantum valet quantum vendi potest.
