Cramer Blames Inflation on Ethanol: 'Drop the Mandate, Prices Plummet'

In the past couple of weeks, NewsBusters has reported the media's sudden negative opinion of ethanol as a result of rising food prices and rationing of rice by certain retailors.

You can now add NBC to the list, and, in particular, the host of CNBC's "Mad Money," Jim Cramer, who on Friday's "Today" show actually blamed ethanol for the current crisis while stating emphatically, "You drop the mandate, prices plummet."

How delicious.

With this in mind, strap your seatbelt tightly across your waist, and prepare yourself for an alternate ungreen reality (video embedded upper right, use scroll bars to properly center):

MATT LAUER, HOST: Let's start with food prices. We've got food inflation that's the highest in 17 years. What's driving these prices?

JIM CRAMER, CNBC's "MAD MONEY": Two things. One, longer term, great affluence of China and India. Those people now want protein-filled diets, beef and chicken. Short-term, though, ethanol in this country. That mandate has bid up everything. You drop the mandate, prices plummet.

I couldn't agree more, Jim. Let the plummeting begin.

When It's Obvious to the most casual Observer, the MSM

When It's Obvious to the most casual Observer, the MSM jumps on the Bandwagon. . . although I don't think eliminating Ethanol mandates/Subsidies will help Gas prices very much. .food prices, yes . . .What would really help would be to DRILL, and Drill some more...and stop the 3 formulas per year for Gas/Diesel Refining...Global warming is NOT an ISSUE anymore, especially since the COLD Spring is taking it's toll on upcoming Fruit harvests.

The MSM is a victim of their own News cycles.....the ones that are not TRUE...You would think that someone reporting the Economics of the Country would get a Clue.

5.00 Gas will bring Rain, Snow, and Environmental murders....and Congress "persons" will NOT be re-elected if you're in office when it happens.

Cramer is taking turns

Cramer is taking turns being right/wrong on issues...back and forth the guy goes...for now he is right on the money, beware, he may change his opinion later.

Btw...Drill Often....Drill Everywhere!

"Never murder your opponent when he is committing suicide." ~ W. Churchill

Right now, I believe this

Right now, I believe this election is McCains to lose. He'll blow out either one of these left-wing lightweights...unless..unless... he fails to get out front on this issue. By Fall, this will be the defining issue of this election. If either Hussein or the wicked witch from the left picks up on corn, ethanol and food prices (which will continue to skyrocket), they could carry the election because people will be enraged by this government-driven crisis.

Cramer is absolutely right but incomplete. The government subsidizes ethanol to the tune of 51 cents per gallon. Drop that subsidy along with the infernal mandates and prices will plummet. If McCain comes out and says that, he wins in a landslide.

If he doesn't...

The Ethanol Subsidies are worse than that

- Total Subsidies for Ethanol Between $6.3 and $8.7 Billion Per Year ($1.42-$1.87 Per Gallon)
- Total Subsidies for Biodiesel Between $1.7 and $2.3 Billion Per Year ($1.69-$2.15 Per Gallon)

The Anti 'Man-Made' Global Warming Resource

Not only will gas prices drop

so will prices on everything. Milk, eggs, and tortillas etcetera.

I pray.

It's not just the subsidy;

It's not just the subsidy; it's the cost of shipping and mixing the ethanol as well, which appears to be about 45 cents a gallon added to the cost at the pump. Ethanol can't be centrally mixed and put through a pipeline; it has to be trucked in and mixed on the spot, which runs up the cost. Of course, if we do the right thing, then we will be deluged with stories about the poor ethanol producers and refiners who now need to be bailed out. The lefties never stop draining the taxpayer for their social engineering schemes.

  It won't be just giants

It won't be just giants like ADM that gets hurt but a lot of little investors, many of them farmers, who bought shares in ethanol plants as a way to invest in their own industry.  Obama's right, there's going to be a lot bitter people out here in the rural areas.  But even farmers are being hurt from the effects of this debacle.  The rising cost of fuel and groceries hurts everybody.

Investing in a scheme

Investing in a scheme backed by the heavy hand of govt subsidies is either a sure thing, or incredibly foolish, depending on what side of the law you are. I have no pity on anyone who invested in ethanol in its current financial state, as it is non-profitable on its own.

Madness does not always howl. Sometimes, it is the quiet voice at the
end of the day saying, "Hey, is there room in your head for one more?"

  Ethanol is still a sure

Ethanol is still a sure thing because its use is the law of the land.  But we shall have to wait and see what happens next.

Yea, Right, In Brazil it's a Sure thing

How come the MSM does NOT inform us that Sugar Cane is 8 Times more efficient in creating Ethanol than Corn ? ? Would it slant up their message about Ethanol ?

Things look good for Hawaii and Sugar Cane...but the Midwest Corn Belt is driving up Food/Milk prices.....A subsidy that doesn't work the right DIrection.

Meanwhile Alaska rejected Exxons latest Drilling proposal.....I'm seeing 5 bucks a gallon in the Future, before someone slaps Pelosi in the Mouth...and Sugar Canes Reid...

Hey JT... Do you have a

Hey JT...

Do you have a link to what the whole deal was about why Ak. rejected Exxons latest drilling propasal?

If not I will look it up later...just hoping you can save me time, lazy here ..I think I may have an idea what happened, but want it confirmed.

Big Tee. I heard it on the Radio....no link..I'm in Seattle now

I'm working on the Left Coast now, and I hear things about Alaska that I didn't hear on the East Coast....Proximity creates need to know.

It was on the Existing Prudoe bay ....Exxon (Whom I have worked for in Texas) wants to punch new holes in the Ground...if the State will let them....Delays...Deelays.....We don't need no Environmental Delays....or Pelosi's gonna get FIRED !!!

Thanks JT...I know where

Thanks JT...I know where else to find out all about it. You answered my question about what I think is going on, I just think there is more going on behind the scenes politically speaking too...I'm going to look more into it, plus we have relation living and working there too.

BT, here's the story

BT, here's your explanation via the Anchorage Daily News...

When you put the clowns in charge, don't be surprised when a circus breaks out.

viking... Thank

viking...

Thank you...that is where I was going to go next.

Irwin is a plick and I wonder who is in his back pocket.

I am so furious what these people do to stop production, jobs and progress let alone self dependency.

It is beyond reality and total insanity...has been for years.

I know one thing the people of Ak. when I lived there were past fed up with the hold ups... greenie laws and courts, the federal govt...on and on...so many old timers and others like me say they were sorry Ak. didn't remain a Territory instead of becoming a State.

"Never murder your opponent when he is committing suicide." ~ W. Churchill

Thanks Vikign..that puts meat on the Rumor

Why can't we all just Get along ?

If that Field is under pressure....Exson is probably Scared of a Spill, or Flame out...or both....Burning off a Flare at the wellhead in Alaska would Bring out The Environmentalistic Publications nationwide...Global Warming caused by Exxon "Flare" at Wellhead to handle Pressure of Oil Field....

Sounds like Irwin is

Sounds like Irwin is wanting to split up production and award it to other companies JT....after Exxon spent millions exploring and discovering it...he is in the back pocket of somebody...let alone the other thoughts I have.

"Never murder your opponent when he is committing suicide." ~ W. Churchill

Resolve the Exxon problem quickly

This is the first I've heard of all of this, so I won't take a side.  However, whatever financial concerns Exxon may have once had probably don't look so bad with crude oil pushing $120 per barrel.  They need to resolve this quickly and get drilling ASAP.

When you put the clowns in charge, don't be surprised when a circus breaks out.

   No matter what the

No matter what the economics, burning vast quantities of food is immoral.

ethanol price effects on

ethanol price effects on food is maybe 25 to 33%.....and even at that the distillers use only the starch part of the corn.   The "distillers wet grain" is a byproduct containing the protein......which goes out the door to feed lvsk, poultry and hogs......

The remaining 75% of food price increase is attributable to increased demand from China, India etc,  markup by middleman (Kraft, Gen Mills etc) and transp. costs of the finished food product.

this is the mis-information the MSM's are eating up from the oil and finished food industry.......

MSM are trying to pit groups in the Red States against each other as it builds up to voting time.  What better way.....food prices vrs. a move away from 25 yrs of stagnent grain prices.....

Dont play the game of Yin vrs Yang the MSM's wanna throw at you

Everyone could live with a sched. planned phase out of the blenders subsidy........just dont pull the rug ala Jimma' Carter Grain Embargo.........

Ordinary farmers will be hurt if ethanol policy changes

Don't forget the farmers who are enjoying corn prices that have tripled in just a few years, and have made business decisions based on the current ethanol policy. They'll be hurt too. So expect a lot of resistance from farm state congressmen and senators.

When you put the clowns in charge, don't be surprised when a circus breaks out.

Yep, we're paying Farmers to hurt Food Prices...a PELOSI

A Pelosi policy ?

I heard tell that when the Democrats took over Congress in 2006, Gas was 2.19 a Gallon.......A 150% plus Gain in just two years....WOW...

It's hard as hell to find people with this kind of improvement....

Well that's because the

Well that's because the government interferes, creates a problem, and then as a solution proposes more interference. Micromanagement at its worst.

especially since for the 25

especially since for the 25 yrs prior to that corn and food prices were esentially stagnent.........check out your Co.'s price history, what was the price/ value of your product 25 yrs ago...........could your company survive and that price of 25 yrs ago.

The last time Govt jerked the rug on farmers was Jimma'Carter Grain embargo......and then we had to listen to Willie Nelson sing at Farm Aid concerts.

dont wanna go thru that again

I feel the industry can

I feel the industry can live with a planned/sched. phase out of the blenders subsidy.   This is already being started in the new farm bill.   A reduction from 51 cents to 45 cents is being proposed.

Agree fully, let the market work,  but should've let the market work up the fledgling industry on its own in the 1st place,  to jerk the rug with out a phase plan is the wrong choice now

But, as a farmer,  Ethanol is, and can be our Farm program....phase that out 1st....Get the Enviro's out of our business.  Phase em' both out and let the market work.

Ethanol now reduces gas needs by approx 9%, maybe more......Lets see, we import 2600 barrels of oil per Day........of which columbia is 9%......

http://www.eia.doe.gov/pub/oil_gas/petroleum/data_publications/company_level_imports/current/import.html

What happens to gas price with a sudden un-announced 10% reduction in supply...................say a coup in Columbia......as an example..........see a spike in crude that makes food cheap

We have plenty of oil left.

First you increase fuel economy by removing the 9-10% ethanol so the effect on supply is really 6-7%. Ethanol mixtures are artificially inflating prices and since we have plenty of oil left it would stabilize on it's own.

Myth: The World Is Running Out of Oil (Video) (5min) (John Stossel, 20/20)

The Anti 'Man-Made' Global Warming Resource

  I agree.  If we

I agree.  If we developed our known oil reserves, used clean coal technology, built more nuclear plants plus added solar and wind where economically viable our economy would really take off.

Ethanol is no where near 9% displacement of petroleum use

From:

http://www.eia.doe.gov/emeu/steo/pub/contents.html

"Total petroleum consumption of liquid fuels and other petroleum products averaged 20.7 million bbl/d in 2007, essentially unchanged from 2006"

"ethanol production has increased from an average of 314,000 bbl/d during the summer of 2006, to 418,000 bbl/d during the summer of 2007, and is projected to average 550,000 bbl/d this summer."

Take 418,000 (2007 Ethanol production) / 20,700,000 bbl/d

and you get ETHANOL "DISPLACEMENT" of

TWO PERCENT  ( 2 % )

no where near 9%....and will likely NEVER EVER be 9% unless consumption drops dramatically. of course, gasoline use is less than all daily petroleum use.

A rough guide there is daily gasoline use is about 9,400,000 bbl/d and Ethanol at 418,000 bb/d...that's about 4.4% displacement of gasoline by ethanol.  Would take double 2007 production (and static consumption) just to get to 9%.

wingnut

Very, very soon Cramer will be declared a wingnut, unamerican and a tool of the oil companies.

whodathunkit

now if we can only get liberals to follow common sense conservative insight beforehand, instead of after the fact, maybe we might actually get this planet spinningin the right direction. but of course the media will not only ignore the fact that the whole ethenol food crisis was created by environmental looney liberal agendas, i'll bet they will try and pin the blame on a conservative sooner or later.

also remember this is jim cramer, and if you remember jim looked up to eliot spitzer as a friend and a good politician, eliot spitzer used his family money to buy high priced hookers, his favorite high priced hooker had a pair of green high heels, where am i going with this.......nowhere, just like liberal policies, completely useless.

lunaticcringeradio

Things have not changed...Cramer can still look up to Spitzer

Spitzer didn't move, Cramer can stand in Central Park and look up to Spitzer's Hacienda Apt.

If Spitzer hadn't inherited 500 milllion, I'd feel sorry for the Guy.

it's my understanding

he inherited billions, i mean how can you afford $5000 hookers on a millionaires income in todays rate of inflation, that you as a democrat billionaire politician have help create and inflict on the rest of society.

lunaticcringeradio

I posted this in the Open

I posted this in the Open Thread this AM, but it fits here.

Ted Turner disagrees with Cramer. He says the problem is overpopulation, and ethanol is the solution!!

He said:

“There are a lot of different problems being caused by an ever-increasing number of people in a finite-sized world,” Turner said. “The resources of the planet just can’t keep up with the demand and I’m afraid this going to be more commonplace. I’m afraid we’re just seeing the tip of the iceberg.

and

“liquid fuels made from plants and trees, including biodiesel for trucks and generators and ethanol for cars and cooking – could do more than fight problems like pollution and global warming.”

So ethanol is not the problem; it's the solution!!

(Unfortunately he doesn't say what those "more" things are.)

Turner operates on the "zero sum" principle...that nothing ever changes. He fails to consider that because of advances it now takes considerably less farmland to feed the same number of people. He doesn't consider farmland that isn't being used (because the farmers get paid not to plant.) He just assumes there is a finite amount of food that has to be divided among more and more people.

Well Ted, you can look at it this way: if a few billion people die of starvation, that will be good for the planet, right? You can take solace in that.

LOL mb... Turner is lost

LOL mb...

Turner is lost in that vast wasteland between his ears, he has too much time on his hands...he may want to consider the buffalo meat he raises and sells here in Montana for restuarants for buffalo burgers and such if he really cares or understood one word coming out of his own mouth, think about all the hypocrisy here...he is insane.

Period.

"Never murder your opponent when he is committing suicide." ~ W. Churchill

Calling Al Gore -- we have some questions for you.

The actual record tells it all. VP Gore was the deciding the vote (51-50) that started this ethanol madness. Countless factual speeches preceded the vote warning of increased hunger and starvation in the world. Since mechanized farming began, the world had experienced a decrease in hunger year after year after year. In spite of the world's population more than doubling! Until now. The upward curve has flattened and is poised to plummet. Throughout history wars fought over food and power have been the most ruthless. Now we have both on the horizon.

If you check the facts you'll see (counting everything such as transportation to haul the corn) it currently requires a gallon of gasoline to produce 0.7 gallons ethanol. Ethanol is 70% as efficient as gasoline. To replace 40% of all fossil fuel used with ethanol would require every square inch of the earth's surface to be planted in corn. Forget about all other crops and all national parks. It isn't talked about but ethanol emits MORE pollution than does gasoline.

There were countless speeches and warning given of what is just now beginning to happen. What say, ethanol proponents when presented with the above facts. "Science will improve and it's the thought that counts". Well, the same holds true for gasoline. Average usage of gasoline has doubled in efficiency in the last 20 yearsand pollution hs been cut by 80%.

I'm from Kansas. My business benefits from ethanol plants. EVERY farming magazine contains articles telling farmrs NOT to talk to the media about how much money they are making. Many are making more money in a year then they used to make in five. Farmers are WARNED not to show off their bulging assets. Put the money in the bank - not in a matching gold plated cadillacs for you and the wife.

Thank you for this massive transfer of wealth from mostly Blue states to mostly Red states! Yuo are total fools! What the government doesn't confiscate, I'll put it to good use! Thanks again!

BUT

We have this pending problem of a billion people dying of starvation. Hungry people do desperate things. There was warning after warning but it feel on deaf ears. The Democrats were automatically in favor of any vote buying scheme. That was to be expected. Did you know most farmers are registered Democrats? Who would have guessed? When the Democrats control government farm subsidies go from big to huge. They're no dummies. But the people count adds up to mostly Republicans in Red states. Why did very conservative Pat Roberts of Kansas vote for ethanol and minimal border crossing enforcement? The same reason all of politicians vote for anything that adds $$ to farming, even if it leads to mass starvation. Yes, I'm ashamed of them but a Democrat in the same position would have voted the same way. So it doesn't matter who is in office, farming will get richer as the world starves. Dear Mr. Gore: you were warned and warned. 1st grade lesson you must have missed. Food comes from land, not the grocery store.

Did you know the world's average temperature has DROPPED in each year of the last five years. Many areas of North America experienced their coldest winters ever this year. Five more years of this and the world's temperature will be BELOW what it was in 1850. Did Mankind cause that too? The term Global Warming is suddenly almost gone. Several networks and many newspapers have quietly banned it. Doubt me? Start counting. You'll now hear "climate change". The climate has ALWAYS changed! But, for the sake of the "People's Party" (DNC) Mankind will be at fault no matter what happens. Katie said it, Oprah said it, Sean Penn and all the other trained climatologists said so.

It's not the few thousand demagogue politicians who play to the emotions of people to gain power that reaqlly bothers me. It's that more than half of the voters accept it unquestionably. Mankind will be at fault no
matter what happens. Katie said it, Oprah said it, Sean Penn and all
the other trained climitologists said so. Even Nobel winning kicked out of Harvard Al Gore said it. It must be true!

Before the end of the first term of the next president we'll be hysterical about the coming new Ice Age. Except this change will be REAL! Starvation today is a matter of politics and war. Not the ability to grow sufficient crops. That is changing at a blinding speed. Wars over food and resources are where the losing side dies. It will be wars fought over dwindling resources. The losers will starve. Some are already that have no power to do anything but die.

In the meantime we have enough fossil fuel to last hundreds of years except it is inconvient locations. Our Kansas governor just vetoed the most non-polluting, most efficient coal burning plant that technology can build. Why? She's surrounded by an ethanol bonanza. Why shouldn't corn be $15 a bushel? It just means $8 gas and a billion people starving. She's doing just fine in Topeka!

Yes, this will all end eventually and, right now, the outcome does not look pretty. Ready to revisit the 14th century? it is coming soon.

Any comment Mr. Gore? You lead the charge against all factual warnings all coming true today. You lead us on emotion so get worked up again about something you know nothing about and tell us lemmings which direction the cliff is. We're ready!

Whoa TM...Good to hear from a Farmer in Kansas

This is good that Farmers get paid a Premium for what they Grow....they can use a spike in Earnings.....plus the "focus" on who is doing what...Farmers growing Products that we really need...is a good focus for now and the Future. As you say, food comes from the Land, not the Grocery store.

We should take away the import Tax on Ethanol so that Cheap Sugar Cane Ethanol can come into the Country, without any subsidy....that is, if Ethanol can compete.

Starving people are a Concern, but Global warming is Good for growing in Siberia...would that is was True...

The Global warming BS is almost done...AL Gore is Done....Sun Spots are done, and Global cooling may be on it's way..and the American Farmer's Productivity is all we have for feeding the World.....Provided we can fill the Tank on the Tractors.

Kansas Iced over is an Issue in a Sun Spotless world.....we can't Legislate a solution to that....Although Pelosi may say she "Cares".

Only the strong Survives.......will be the law of the land.

wt0m -The Goracle

You beat me to it. Yep, the guy that grew up in a luxury hotel in D.C. and was heavy into petroleum stocks is now responsible for countless starvations amongst the already dirt poor.

Who says one vote doesn't matter? Has no consequence?

Addendum

I remember, many times, traversing I-70 across Kansas. All along the vast pool table flat heartland were "amber waves of grain" and corn that was always way past "knee high by the Fourth of July." An inland land-sea of abundance.

Frequently the traveler would see a sign posted on farmland fence posts visible form the Interstate.

They said - "This farm feeds 120 Americans - including you."

I wonder what they say now?

The Heritage Foundation

The Heritage Foundation warned of this last year, http://www.heritage.org/Research/EnergyandEnvironment/wm1512.cfm  but who listens to conservatives?  I guess Pelosi and Reid were trying to assert cheaper gas into existence.

Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, starving the poor one gallon of ethanol at a time. Fill your tank with E85 and cull a village.
