Bill Maher on Friday night's "Real Time" made something crystal clear that conservatives have known for decades: Liberal means never having to say you're sorry.
Update at end of post includes response from the Catholic League.
Having on last Friday's program (as reported by my colleague Matthew Balan) "stated that the Pope 'used to be a Nazi,'" Maher was supposed to apologize for his transgression.
Well, if the nonsense he uttered last evening is what liberals call an apology, it should act as a grander indictment as to what's wrong with the extreme-left in our nation (video embedded upper-right courtesy our friend Ms Underestimated):
Last week, I got into some trouble with the Catholic League, not the first time...Not my biggest fans...because I said in our little essay ending the show, I said, "The Pope," and I looked at it again, I looked at the words carefully, "used to be a Nazi." Okay, now first of all, it was a joke, okay? We were in a comedic context. I said, "He used to be a Nazi, and he wears funny hats, and ladies, he's single." So, right away, we're in the context of a joke, okay, and "used to." Okay, but, you know, you got me. The Pope was not a Nazi. When he was a teenager, he was in the Hitler Youth, which meant that he said the oath directly to Hitler and not to the Nazis, which is sorta worse!
Nice apology so far, wouldn't you agree? First, the typical liberal line, "It's a joke," which is what we've seen the past few years any time anybody on the left makes a senseless, insensitive statement.
Yet, even better, in his so-called apology, Maher actually suggested that a child in Nazi Germany saying an oath to Hitler is WORSE than BEING a Nazi. But it gets worse:
But, but wait a second, the thing that argues for their side of this is that, you know what, he was coerced into that. He was a teenager. I wouldn't blame any teen, he was a fourteen-year-old kid in Nazi Germany, of course he's going to do what they tell him to do. So, on that score, you know what my Catholic friends, I will never make the Pope is a Nazi joke again, because you're technically right, okay, and also because it distracts from the main point.
Wait for it!
And the main point I was making was that if the Pope instead of a religious figure was the CEO of a chain of nationwide daycare centers, who had thousands of employees who had been caught molesting children and then covering it up, he would have been in jail.
Nice "apology," Bill!
As a post facto aside, I must say that if Maher is going to invite the fabulous Dutch writer Ayaan Hirsi Ali on the show, maybe he ought to give her more time to speak. Instead, the panel discussion of this installment was dominated by absurdities from Harvard's Cornel West, inanities from Markos Moulitsas, and the normal invective from Maher.
Sadly, Ali was given about as much face-time as Carlton the Doorman.
*****Update: the Catholic League has responded to Maher's statements:
On his HBO show last night, Bill Maher apologized for accusing the pope of being a Nazi; he acknowledged that the Catholic League was right when we said that Joseph Ratzinger was forced to join a German youth organization (from which he fled at the first instance). Maher then said that if a CEO were in charge of an institution that housed molesters, he would be fired.
Catholic League president Bill Donohue commented as follows:
“We accept Maher’s apology for accusing the pope of being a Nazi. Too bad he didn’t stop there. For him to suggest that Pope Benedict XVI was in charge of policing molesters, and failed in doing so, is patently absurd.
“As Pope John Paul II’s right-hand man, Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger’s principal job was to make sure that theologians were faithfully presenting the teachings of the Catholic Church. He was, to some extent, the Church’s Academic Dean, someone who was charged with enforcing academic standards. He was not the Church’s Dean of Students, i.e., he was not discharged with enforcing codes of conduct. Indeed, it wasn’t until after the scandal hit the newspapers in 2002 that he was put in charge of dealing with predatory priests, and by all accounts did so effectively.
“Maher has to understand that no one person, including the pope, could possibly be held accountable for the behavior of its employees in a global institution. There are priests from Boston to Bosnia, and it is simply preposterous for any one person to know exactly what is going on everywhere at any given time. Maher would have been better advised to focus on those bishops who proved to be enablers—it is the bishop’s job to know what is going on in his diocese, not the pope’s.
“The larger issue remains. It would be great if Maher gave up his Catholic-bashing obsession once and for all.”

And "It's a joke" covers everything they say. But don't anyone dare make a "joke" about lynching Tiger Woods!!!

April 19, 2008 - 11:37 ET by iveseenitallThe man is a "liberal": a bigoted, ignorant, immature, self-centered, adolescent-- a poor excuse for a man. He, like all "liberals", will never grow up and be a man. He can not admit that he was wrong and just apologize for it. Never. And it never ceases to amaze me how many people just don't get it. Rush to apology
April 19, 2008 - 11:47 ET by VonuI didn't see the Catholic Church rush to apologize for destroying the innocence of thousands of young people. I don't know if the Pope should go to jail, but he should never be allowed off the hook for trying to hide pedophiles. And those who got their hands dirty in this like Cardinal Mahoney should resign and spend the rest of their days in prison. There are far worse things one could call the pope than "Nazi" and they would be far more accurate. Stop with the Jokes, Maher, go for the throat. Never forget.

It seems pretty clear that you're in no mood for forgiveness. The church is doing all it can to ask forgiveness, but this may not be the time. That's OK.

As cardinal ratzinger he was JPTwo's point man on the issue. What he hid, I have no idea. I expect that he hid the worst.
The nazis, for all their perversion genuinely believed they were working for a better world. The Vatican gang knows reality is not as they demand (through threat of excommunication) their followers to believe.

Okay, sounds like you think Vatican City is just as bad as the Nazis, so I don't know what more I can add then. That's just pure craziness.
BTW, what you don't realize is that Roman Catholics are not mind-numb robots. If the Pope told all of us to jump off a bridge, do you think we would all do it under threat of excommunication (I'm afraid of your response)?

Ratzinger 's role was
April 20, 2008 - 12:36 ET by VonuRatzinger 's role was documented in the press. Part of the game plan was to make this an "American" problem. This is supported by Benny's obsession over the issue on this trip. Had this gone global the church itself could have been threatened. The vatican did a much better job containing this scandal than the Fed has done containing the sub prime mess.
While comparing nazis to vatican seems crass even to me, the point that I wish to high light is that there is no way the priests could have thought anything other than they were betraying their oaths and everything they profess to the world. Unquestionably this behavior and its enablement was institutionalized. We have a large all male cult sworn to celibacy that has continued for centuries. What has emerged is a practice of culling the sheep to feed the unfilled sexual yearnings of a rather odd group, willing to forgo all sexual contact in this world. We see the results of this. The vocations have attracted a lot of weirdos and worse. The Church would rather have this culling than reform. Welcome people who express sexuality in healthy ways to the clergy and this scandal will be less likey to repeat.
But aren't you worried when you see what the government is doing to the mormon families in TX? I don't see much of a leap to the government somewhere going into Catholic schools with dorm living and doing the same thing, claiming the students are being brain washed by sexual deviants.
Forget separation of Church and State, pass the popcorn and watch them go to war! Thats a war I can support.
Disagree
April 20, 2008 - 13:33 ET by KC MulvilleWith respect, Vonu, your assertions are way off base. Let me address three of them:
The statistics, unfortunately, document that this actually is an American phenomenon. There are cases in other countries and cultures, but the overwhelming number of cases comes from America. And as I cited in an earlier post, it’s even more specific. (http://usccb.org/nrb...) The overwhelming number of cases comes from recruits for the ten years or so just before Vatican II (early 1960s). Vatican II called for a more modern approach to sexuality, and behind the scenes, to a review of recruiting practices. After that took place, the abuse cases plummeted. Reports now show that the current classes of Catholic priests are way below the statistical average.
“What has emerged is a practice of culling the sheep to feed the unfilled sexual yearnings of a rather odd group, willing to forgo all sexual contact in this world.” Emphatically, I denounce this assertion. There was no practice, intentional or subliminal, to “feed the wolves” with innocent sheep. But you don’t have to take my word for it. Refer to the same study above. As I say, the abuse cases spiked during a specific time, and since the mid-1980s, have dropped well below average. Celibacy was in place before the spike, and after the spike, so it’s illogical to blame the spike on celibacy. Therefore, the dramatic conspiracy theory that the church was feeling the wolves is simply a prejudice being projected in spite of reality.
“Welcome people who express sexuality in healthy ways to the clergy and this scandal will be less likey to repeat.” Again, you don’t have to take my word for it, just consult the study. Since the early 1980s, the number of abuse cases drops to below-average numbers. That means that you are much less likely to be abused by a priest (recruited within the last 25 years) than by any other male in society – you know, all those men expressing themselves healthily! If you look at the actual statistics, especially for the last 15 years, all those celibate priests are dramatically “safer” than other sexually active men. So, not only is your assertion not supported by fact … the facts actively contradict it.
Vonu, I appreciate that you’re angry about this scandal. Trust me, you’re not the only one. And if the hierarchy continued to look the other way, denying the real pain that these priests have caused, I’d be right beside you, screaming for justice. But the hierarchy isn’t looking the other way. They’ve recognized this sin, admitted it, and they’re actively trying to make amends. Like you, I’m still angry about what happened, but I can’t reject their repentance. I won’t rejoice in their humiliation. Most important, I won’t let my anger at their betrayal overcome me. That’s what forgiveness is about. Someday, I hope you find the same.
Contrition must proceed forgiveness
April 20, 2008 - 20:18 ET by VonuI'm not angry, I really have no dog in this fight. People misplace their faith and are very defensive about it (I've learned).
It is really no different than the issue that pisses me off, the Federal Reserve System and their theft of American treasure. People are blind to what is really going on so nothing will change until many many people suffer. Oh well.
It is an American problem, I accept your assesment. But it is also true the Vatican has been successful in keeping it that way.
You ain't going to give up celibacy, I get that. What caused the spike then?
I hope you're right, for the kids' sake, that one day soon priestly molestation will be as rare as Inquistion era torture is today.

The difference
April 19, 2008 - 22:59 ET by KC MulvilleSyrius, there's a difference. When Jay Leno makes jokes about pedophiles in the church, I may cringe, but his jokes don't upset me. His are usually funny. In fact, I agree that society has a right to express scorn. The clergy deserves it, especially the ones who either looked the other way or actively hid the perpetrators. As a believer, I have some scorn to heap at them myself.
But Leno is a comedian who does jokes about politics. Maher considers himself a serious political commentator, in addition to cracking jokes. Maher writes op-ed pieces attacking religion, with no jokes in there. Maher uses this as a talking point against religion, but he was against religion in the first place, long before the scandal. Now I believe that if you want to join the public conversation, you owe your listeners an explanation for your convictions. If you respect your audience, you don't just tell them what to believe, you give reasons and allow your audience to decide for themselves. (Sure, it makes for long posts on Newsbusters, but I think you owe that to anyone you hope will read your material.)
Maher tosses off his insults (they're not very funny in themsleves), but when challenged to answer for his comments, he ducks behind the lame excuse that it's "just comedy." Leno does comedy. No one is demanding explanations from Leno. Maher is different.

April 19, 2008 - 20:37 ET by HumblepieAccording to some post only certain people should be held to a higher standard. Though I agree that probably more priest should of been held accountable, that does not in anyway suggest I agree with punishing the Pope. If your the CEO of a large (or any) corporation, you help define the standards and its up to the first and second line managers to enforce it. If a problem exist, they would be the first to correct and report it. They CEO might get an e-mail on said offense so he is not blindsided by the news. If management finds the problem more widespread, then upper management would get involved to isolate where the problems were and to fix them. The late Pope John Paul did that. Pope Benedict XVI didn't become involved until later, and by then it already became a household issue.
I am not Catholic, but I believe the church tried to solve the problem. From providing not only financial support but counsellings for the family. Many priest were tried and the church basically retired the "managers" who failed to take immediate action. In addition, new standards were provided and will be upheld. The church apologized at every turn.
Put that in the same light as some of our so called media outlets, or better yet, our elected government officials.

April 20, 2008 - 11:43 ET by seaniepas a Catholic and someone who enjoys humor my problems with Bill Maher are never recognized for what they are
I have not gone to mass in quite some time, when I do go, I don't take communion because my heart isn't in it and I at least respect it enough to realize its not for me where I am spiritually right now (which pelosi and kerry and rest of them should do instead of now using their Catholicism as a political stance)
but having said that, I don't like Bill Maher because he really is not that funny, its quick little jabs based on half truths and pieces of headlines, it only takes a moment to realize that his "humor" is the equvialent of finding it hillarious when you catch someone typing "there" instead of "they're" - its really not that creative, it certainly isn't funny but if you are a MORON you will laugh quickly because the "laughter" sign lights up and you are in the studio audience
I remember seeing him on a late night show where he made some cheap shot at the president and there was moderate laughter, and moderate is being very generous, he then referred to it as "thunderous applause" - he is delusional and not funny
Bill Maher Is Just Saying What We're Thinking...
April 22, 2008 - 00:04 ET by The7SticksHe's just saying that the Catholic Church is an evil organization that is bent on wiping out the Jews and imposing their "moral" authority over all of us. That's not some hateful bigoted statement. That's what history has taught us, what with the centuries of persecution of the Jews by the Catholics, culminating in Pope Pius XII's aid in helping Hitler murder six million Jews in the Holocaust. Plus, the Church really deplores secular Jews because they allegedly control Hollywood. That's kind of funny because everyone knows that the Catholic-run Legion of Decency was the group that controlled the way films were made in Hollywood for a whole generation during the forties and fifties. So, no, I don't see how it's offensive for Bill Maher to say some false salacious things about the Church. After all, the Church had a history about lying to us about the Jews, birth control, and anything else they claimed was offensive to them.
