The liberal outrage over Wednesday's Democrat presidential debate on ABC continues to mount.
On Friday, billionaire George Soros's MoveOn.org published a petition at its website, along with a video (embedded right), asking Americans to protest "[debate] moderators [that] abuse the public trust every time they ask trivial questions about gaffes and 'gotchas' that only political insiders care about."
The following text hysterically accompanies the petition:
Editor & Publisher called this week's ABC presidential debate "perhaps the most embarrassing performance by the media in a major presidential debate in years."
Moderators George Stephanopolous and Charlie Gibson spent the first 50 minutes obsessed with distractions that only political insiders care about--gaffes, polling numbers, the stale Rev. Wright story, and the old-news Bosnia story. And, channelling Karl Rove, they directed a video question to Barack Obama asking if he loves the American flag or not. Seriously.
Enough is enough. The public needs the media to stop hurting the national dialogue in this important election year. Can you sign the petition to ABC and other media outlets and pass it on to friends who are also fed up?
A compiled petition with your individual comment will be presented to ABC and other media.
In a related matter, a liberal political action group in California called Courage Campaign, whose partners include MoveOn.org, has organized a rally on Friday to protest the ABC debate:
Please join us at ABC/Disney's headquarters in Burbank from 4-7 p.m on FRIDAY to protest and pass out flag pins to ABC/Disney employees leaving their Disney corporate office.
Your mission: Ask ABC/Disney employees whether they can pass their own flag-pin litmus test: "Are you patriotic enough to wear a flag-pin? Remember, you can't be a patriot without a pin!"
Bear in mind that these people think Keith Olbermann is a journalist, and deserves to not only be the moderator for presidential debates, but also be an anchor during MSNBC's coverage of primaries.
Isn't it delicious that folks who have the nerve to call themselves "progressives" can't see the hypocrisy?
Of course, regardless of all the protests, Wednesday's debate was the most watched of any so far this campaign season. As reported by the New York Times Thursday (emphasis added throughout):
More than 10 million viewers tuned into Wednesday’s Democratic debate on ABC, making it the most-watched debate of the primary election season.
The debate, the first to air on a weeknight on a broadcast network, attracted an average of 10.7 million viewers between 8 and 10 p.m., according to Nielsen Media Research.
Maybe more important, the number of viewers peaked midway through the program -- meaning people LIKED what they saw:
Viewership of the debate peaked between 8:30 and 9 p.m. with 11.8 million viewers, topping the “reality” fare of “Deal or No Deal” on NBC and “Big Brother” on CBS.
TelevisionWeek put it best Thursday (emphasis added):
In Philadelphia, the broadcast scored an 18 rating (meaning 18% of the TV homes in the market were tuned to the debate) and a 27 share (meaning 27% of all TV sets in use in the market were tuned to the debate).
“That’s like an NFL game,” Dave Davis, the executive VP in charge of ABC News programming and special events such as the debate, told TelevisionWeek.
What does this all mean? Well, clearly, the nation doesn't share the views of the extreme-left in this country.
Maybe this is why MSNBC's ratings are so abysmal, and New York Times subscribers continue to plummet ALONG with the value of its stock!

Of course they have no problem taking a collective dump on a real hero like General Petraeus, but no way anyone should take to task a leftist ant-American radical like the Obammessiah and his horde.

April 18, 2008 - 17:16 ET by mostlymoderateThis is hilarious. The "dailykos liberals" are the biggest whiners I have ever witnessed either present-day or in the history books I studied in school. These freaks have no problem lambasting the President, the Vice President, or any OTHER Republican or Conservative; however, you ask one of their candidates anything other than the weather, what their favorite food is or where they went to school and they become OUTRAGED!
The AMAZING thing is that it isn't Republican's doing the questioning. No, it is "other democrats" and "liberals". I can only imagine how outraged these "American-socialists" are going to be when McCain starts asking some questions of his own.

April 18, 2008 - 17:28 ET by sarcasmoSean Hannity clearly telegraphed this rhetorical punch days-ago in his conversation with George, right? Not only that, as he spoke to Sean, the former Clinton Press Secretary literally warned his buddies on the left that he was taking notes on this particular question(!!) What more could the guy do to alert the Obama campaign? It's just a nasty issue for Obama, just like the angry wife & preacher who both can't shut-up for his campaign's sake. Obama will either survive it or he won't, but at least George did his job. 3 cheers for tough questions of any sort to politicians of any sort!!

Either way...it was fun to see Obama squirm!

Character Counts (Unless You're a Liberal)
April 18, 2008 - 17:58 ET by BayshoremanTo my constant amazement, Liberals, almost by definition, only believe character applies to conservatives.
Well, ABC didn't really ask tough questions..
April 18, 2008 - 18:10 ET by Gary HallVery well analyzed Noel. Indeed, it was very odd that Steph sort of asked a tough question and very surprising that Charlie Gibson chased Obama on the capital gains tax issue; almost sounded like he was hounding a Republican, for a minute.
But in all honesty, this was not a hard hitting debate. I didn't hear either one of them come out and ask Hillary if or when she was going to stop lying. And neither of them challenged Obama over Rev. Wrights attack on Hillary and Bill Clinton - nor did they ask Hillary how she felt about it:
In this clip the Reverend Wright is ranting in hatred, as he thrusts his pelvic forward, suggesting that Hillary would only be as Bill Clinton had been; Bill had f---ed the blacks just as he did Monica Lewinski. Rev. Wright hates the Clinton's. He presents what many have said, Clinton did the talk - but did not do the walk. Contrary to MSM's imagination, Bill Clinton effectively did nothing for the black community.
Now, this would have livened up the debate. Roll the tape and the transcript, please:

If John McCain's pastor had said such a thing about another candidate, we can rest assured that MoveOn.org would have been all over it - demanding the the media keep it front and center.

Maybe McCain should be interrogated about past marital issues. Those gritty details are something all of America needs to know more about.
Perhaps O'Reilly, the fierce inquisitor, can be recruited to really get tough on McCain with bruising questions such as those he posed to Bush and Condi Rice concerning their ability to withstand the relentlessly vicious assaults from the far left media like the New York Times.

April 18, 2008 - 18:18 ET by catnamedjakeIs this now proof that the Dem. party is fracturing? the kook fringe from the ones like Charlie who it seems are just tired of the sniping and want to get the nomination over with already? Could the reasonable ones just be weary of conservatives making fun of them, or just figuring out that the puffball questions are getting them nowhere?
Fracturing? It just may be.
April 18, 2008 - 18:42 ET by balboaFracturing? It just may be. I don't agree with the stupid idea of a petition about a debate.
horse race...
April 18, 2008 - 19:03 ET by aeroveloI know the dems hate it, but the media are eating it up. Just when one candidate gets the advantage, egg breaks on their face..back and fourth its just made for sound bytes and segment teases....the producers of tv news shows are just kicking back enjoying how easy it is to cue up a days worth of juicy tidbits.
I think for the Dems....they are starting to realize that OHB is tainted love. Hes probably not electable even if Hillary cant bring herself to say it on air, you know shes discussed it with Bubba.
The problem is, the dems really dont want Clinton because theyve already rubbed them raw with their abrasive, coersive methods of intimidation and entitlement.
So, I think theyd rather see Hillary in the race because now they think theyd rather have a candidate that stands a chance of being elected versus one that they would just love to see make history, yet probably wont go all the way for having a bit too much anti American baggage.
Sorry, world, its beginning to look like another white male is going to become the leader of the free world yet again....sigh.

If you pay attention to
April 18, 2008 - 18:37 ET by usinkoreaIf you pay attention to media heat the last few years, you can see the thread connecting it together with things like this: it is a sign of agony over losing more and more of the ability to control what is "imporant" and "correct" in the public discourse.
For a long time, this group of people were able to control things like the media and academia and thus control what was put out in the public domain as proper, worthy and correct.
They hoped, perhaps, that good common sense would one day seep into the bedrock of America, but in the meantime, they didn't have to worry much about the (bitter), ignorant, redneck masses in flyover country, because they controlled the public domain.
Cable, satlites, the Internet, and better radio has destoryed that over the last 20 years ---- especially the last 10 years --- and it is killing them.
You see it in their rabid verbal assault on, and thoughts about, Fox News.
Fox is conservative. Yes. That doesn't bother them that much. They can dismiss that. What they can't stand is the fact Fox is conservative + can get a message out.
It is the same with their cries about talk radio and the need for the government to do something about it.
And it is the same with the over-the-top reaction to ABC's debate hosts.
They know they cannot control what the masses of middle America thinks. They had written those boobs off awhile ago.
But, they can't stand the fact that they can no longer control what those boobs hear in greater public.
They are already losing the battle to define Obama's recent controversies as "non-issues" --- because the Internet and talk radio and Fox have given the masses of Americans the chance to hear about those controversies and thus decide for themselves if they are real issues or not.
But now, they have some of their own becoming turncoats:
how can they hope to regain control of the public discourse if their own on ABC run off the reservation?
And think about all of this in the light of another event:
Trent Lott said some things in his tribute to Strom Thurmond that deserved questioning.
That alone ---- that what he said casued a need for him to define what he meant by what he said ---- that what he said caused questions about Lott's possible connection to ideas segragation that Thrumond championed back in the time period Lott was referring to ---- was enough for Lott's head to roll.
Lott's head rolled simply because a remark he made caused concern about his relationship to Thurmond's past ideas.
But, Obama's long term relationship with Rev. Wright and his connections to an unrepentant domestic terrorist are ---- so clearly non-issues, the very fact you would ask questions about them sends members of the media and the left into high dudgeon.
That is very telling. It shows just how much they demand to control what America hears.

I think what the dems are really worried about is the fact that both of the their party's candidates are essentially unelectable duds at the national level, and that delicious fact (sorry, Noel) is now really beginning to sink in with many of them.
As I see it, this "protest" is an attempt to draw attention away from that obvious fact.
