Astounding Headline: "Global Temperatures 'To Decrease'"

Here's a deliciously inconvenient truth: five days after Nobel Laureate Al Gore told CBS's Lesley Stahl that folks who don't believe man is responsible for warming the planet are "like the ones who still believe that the moon landing was staged in a movie lot in Arizona and those who believe the Earth is flat," the BBC proclaimed "Global Temperatures 'To Decrease.'"

You really can't make this stuff up.

Putting a cherry on top was Investor's Business Daily which published an editorial hours later entitled "The Chill Is On." But, before we get there, let's first hear from the BBC (emphasis added throughout, picture courtesy AP):

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Global temperatures will drop slightly this year as a result of the cooling effect of the La Nina current in the Pacific, UN meteorologists have said.

The World Meteorological Organization's secretary-general, Michel Jarraud, told the BBC it was likely that La Nina would continue into the summer.

This would mean global temperatures have not risen since 1998, prompting some to question climate change theory.

Hmmm. Global temperatures haven't risen since 1998. Wouldn't that make it ten years now since they peaked?

Heck, with global warming like this, who needs air conditioning?

Yet, maybe even more exquisite was the BBC's recognition of the end of the Australian drought:

El Nino warms the planet when it happens; La Nina cools it. This year, the Pacific is in the grip of a powerful La Nina.

It has contributed to torrential rains in Australia and to some of the coldest temperatures in memory in snow-bound parts of China.

Remember how important this drought was to climate alarmists? That argument got washed away, didn't it? Of course, maybe the IPCC and alarmists like Al Gore should have consulted Portland, Maine's Kristen Byrnes who, without the help of climate models, predicted the drought's end in 2007:

I was just looking at my ENSO 3.4 chart when I was responding to Eduardo's email. It looks like the ENSO has been positive for 95% of the last 6 years. Since Austrailia [sic] experiences warm and dry conditions during positive ENSO, six years of drought would not surprise me. But it is headed negative very quickly now, so you might want to dust off your umbrella.

For those that have forgotten, this is what the IPCC reported on April 7, 2007:

As a result of reduced precipitation and increased evaporation, water security problems are projected to intensify by 2030 in southern and eastern Australia and, in New Zealand, in Northland and some eastern regions. ** D [11.4]

[…]

Production from agriculture and forestry by 2030 is projected to decline over much of southern and eastern Australia, and over parts of eastern New Zealand, due to increased drought and fire.

Nice call, guys. Keep up the bad work.

Moving forward, IBD offered the following critique of the IPCC on Friday (emphasis added):

Were the IPCC not dedicated to spreading fear, it would admit its climate models, on which much of the global warming madness is based, are flawed. While pandering politicians, media sycophants and Hollywood dupes desperately seeking significance have lectured us about our carbon monoxide emissions, real temperature changes measured over the past 30 years have not matched well with increases predicted by the IPCC's models.

This is not some gas-guzzler's fantasy but the finding of a credible study published last year in the International Journal of Climatology. Looking at the data, four researchers concluded "the weight of the current evidence . . . supports the conclusion" there is no agreement between the models and the observation temperatures.

That means that projections of future warming are too high, that the entire global warming assumption is suspect, and that Gore should find something more productive to do with his time.

It also proves that Howard Hayden, physics professor emeritus at the University of Connecticut, was correct in describing the machinery of the climate model-hysteria industrial complex as one that takes "garbage in" and spits "gospel out."

The global warming debate is not over. Indeed, the debate is beginning to favor the skeptics.

Bravo, although we prefer "climate realists."

But don't worry folks

Poor Gore will take this time to announce that although climate warming is stalled, it will again come back in full force and send us all to a place hotter than hell. Please don't forget to sign-up for free newsletters on how you can save the planet and make him millions.

I was it has been thirty-some years since I took a earth science class, but was taught the planet runs in cycles. Damn my flat-earth beliefs. That goes the same with the new-energy saving lightbulbs, you know the ones, has a little less than a drop of mercury inside. What was the big scare when I was growing up... oh yea, mercury posion and just a drop will devesate the planet. Hmmmm, are we going full circle or just a circle-jerk.

Coolest Winter Since 2001 For U.S., Globe, According To NOAA

Don't tell Al Gore! Maybe he will go into hibernation until the next warming cycle returns?

2007, Coolest Winter Since 2001 For U.S., Globe, According To NOAA Data (Science Daily)

"The average temperature across both the contiguous U.S. and the globe during climatological winter (December 2007-February 2008) was the coolest since 2001, according to scientists at NOAA’s National Climatic Data Center in Asheville, N.C. [...]

During January alone, 170 inches of snow fell at the Alta ski area near Salt Lake City, Utah, more than twice the normal amount for the month, eclipsing the previous record of 168 inches that fell in 1967. At the end of February, seasonal precipitation for the 2008 Water Year, which began on October 1, 2007, was well above average over much of the West.

Mountain snowpack exceeded 150 percent of average in large parts of Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and Oregon at the end of February. Spring run-off from the above average snowpack in the West is expected to be beneficial in drought plagued areas. [...]

Snowfall was above normal in northern New England, where some locations posted all-time record winter snow totals. Concord, N.H., received 100.1 inches, which was 22.1 inches above the previous record set during the winter of 1886-87. Burlington, Vt., received 103.2 inches, which was 6.3 inches above the previous record set during the winter of 1970-71."

Reality check!

Come on guys, you can't fool me!

Al Gore told me all about this "assault on reason" in his great book! I knew you were all going to try and confuse me by citing "facts" and "scientific studies".

Maybe the letter from Princeton's Professor Singer to ABC has finally started unravel this web of lies.

This new org running commercials on TV called 'We Can Solve It.Org' is the main advertising arm of Gores new $300,000,000 million dollar initiative to bring awareness to the GLOBAL CLIMATE CRISIS (bold lettering just to help scare you more).

I did not go through the process of joining there merry little band, but I am considering it. Here's why... When you go to their website you get very nice content with short vid clips of people trying to convince you that the sky is falling (and fast), but the only goal of this site is to get you to join them. From what I can tell so far there is no money involved in joining. The one thing I did notice is that there is no place on the site for opposing views (interactive forums), but I'm assuming if you do join there will be. So here's what I'm suggesting...

We get as many people as we can to join. Then we find the most widely read forum connected to this site. Join the forum and starting posting facts and/or posting refutations of their so-called facts. Either we will all be kicked off or we may be able to keep the dialogue going into eternity. The longer we keep them talking the less time they have to act.

"Abstain from McCain"

I applaud your plan, Clearthinker . .

I visited the website.

I learned that they have the answers to solve global warming, but they never reveal what those answers are.

The entire site seemed creepy. I felt unwashed reading it. When they showed the picture of all the smiling young people at the Live Earth concert, I needed to click the hell out of there.

Sorry. While I understand your plan, and it just might work, I cannot join a website that would load me up with left-wing e-mails and count me as a supporter.

Gonna give it a try...

But ya know, McCain is so stinkin' hardheaded, it seems once he gets a thought in his head you couldn't blast it out.

The real inconvenient truth....

...is that Al Gore failed to steal the 2000 Election, and the resulting delusional behavior that quickly followed. His political reputation was gone, and with the aid of his Limo Liberal sycophants in Hollywood, decided to "embrace" the issue of global warming to compensate his self-induced insanity.

Is there going to be any study of just how those overseas military ballots were tossed from the recounts, or the mystery of the hanging chads...? Hello?

When AlGore talks about the plight of the Polar Bears (tough ass animals who can survive without his charity, thank you very much) drowing in droves, he really means "the votes haven't been counted!"

When an classic sci-fi epic is hijacked to raise awareness, to Gore/Gort it says "the votes haven't been counted!"

When ditzy celebs like Cameron Diaz become experts on the environment, then leaves the video cameras and spends money that would pay off my car three times over in a day in Beverly Hills, remember..."the votes haven't been counted!"

Eventually, Al Gore will be whisked away in a jacket that has buckles at the ends of the sleeves, but no openings...screaming in a Jim Bakker fashion "the votes haven't been counted! Arrrrgghh! Look in that mail box! Are there any votes? Look in my eyes do I look like a liar to you?"

Drought being dampened in the Southeast?

Drought being dampened in the Southeast? There's been an awful amount of rain there recently. Last summer, almost on a daily basis, the news trumpted the drought in the Southeast. Now? Looks like the local news is talking - not the national media: Drought is over.

In the West? Earlier in the year the snow pack in CA was in the record high range. Last year a coming drought of historic porportions was the future for the western US, resulting in millions having to migrate eastward - yet the California state govenment is still predicting that the population of CA will explode by 56% by 2050 (and the LA Times still does not want a wall).

Gary... Drought, I

Gary...

Drought, I wish!

I have few acres of grass to cut, so all this rain is killing me. If it keeps raining all through the summer I may be forced to hire someone to cut my grass, something up until now I have never done.

Clearly thinking back thinker..

No kidding.  My folks lived up in the hill country NW of San Antonio TX for many many decades, and thinking back it's difficult to remember many years in which they were not experiencing record heat, record cold, record drought, record rain - or any two or three of any of those in the same year. gh

One point you keep missing with Giles:  He gets absolutely infuriated when someone smears HIS scientists for bias and lack of objectivity.  His hypocrisy becomes blatant when that happens.   Take it to him about all the government grant money that his team gets for raising the alarm.  One of your famous lists detailing each prominent Alarmist and where they get their money from would send Giles backpedaling.

Point out the flaws in the links he gives. Or the distortions. Problems with GISS, NASA, IPCC, Hansen, RealClimate etc and he goes bananas. Unfortunately, he doesn't seem to have a clue what the problems are.

 I believe Mr. Gores

I believe Mr. Gores global warming farce has jumped the shark. He is going to spend 300mil over the next 3-5 yrs. on an advertising campaign to promote his agenda. One wouldn't think the Goracle should have to spend anything since for the most part the MSM has been complicent and has given him plenty of free press and airtime the last few yrs. since his sci-fiction documentary and him recieving his Nobel, not to mention last summer's flop "LiveEarth".

The media now along with good new's from Iraq is starting to go silent on Gores scheme with all the new data and studies coming out. The record cold winter and the massive amount's of snow that has fallen worldwide may have something to do with it also.

I guess were only one hot summer's day away from the town crier letting us all know that the sky is falling. The only thing left now is for the Goracle to try and spin how he was wrong and that the all the carbon being spewed forth is actually causing the earth to freeze, but he's got plenty of time and useful idiot's in thbe MSM for that.

Friends....bend over.

You really can't make this stuff up.

I beg to differ. Al Gore, James Hansen and Gavin Schmidt make up this stuff all the time.

And the saying goes...

Heck, with global warming like this, who needs air conditioning?

Noel,

ROFLMAO!  More evidence that, when you give a liberal enough rope, they'll hang themselves!

Here is another great link that shoots GW right out of the water:

  But the sad part is

But the sad part is that a lot of the population (who need some meaning and purpose in their lives) are now convinced that carbon dioxide is a pollutant that needs regulating.  This means the drive for government taxes and regulation will continue on with or without globaloney.

We Realists are slowly

We Realists are slowly winning this debate.  I still do not get clean wins on the lib-lefty sites, but anybody who is at all impartial and visits those debates realizes the truth and I am able to show the lefties/alarmists for the fools they are.

Al Gore

The Cult of Global Warming

It's interesting that Jim Bakker has been brought up, because much of what I read from the non or psuedo-scientific AGW side of things has reminded me of the 60's cults. There always seemed to be a crisis that the cultists had the ultimate and only answers for, whether it was spiritual, political or personal. Every now and then they would show up with the latest answer and try to convince the great unwashed to "drink the cool-aide", often with some success. It seemed that whenever a flaw in their argument was found they would attempt to convince you that it truly wasn't a flaw, you just didn't understand the whole story and if you joined them the truth would be revealed.

It sure seems like Gore's $300 Million propaganda campaign is the latest tool to be used to convince the World to fill the pockets of  the cult and leaders. What a scam!

"No quote yet"

So where did I mention Jim

So where did I mention Jim Bakker?

So, La Nina is stronger than any man made CO2 emission ?

My God, La Nina is Just a Little Girl (in spanish) and she's is stronger than the Tailpipes of all the SUV's in the World ?

Maybe CO2 isn't a pollutant . . . Maybe it's OK to build another Coal Fired Electrical plant . . . Maybe it's OK for Cows to Fart.

Then again, maybe the absence of Sun Spots caused El Nina to appear, but it also points out a "Non Maybe". . . The Global Warming Model is flawed, obsolete, Kaput, and Al Gore better run and hide down in Bali Again, or is he down in Thailand now  scaring the poor Rice farmers and the un-informed third world countries ?

But one day, Al Gore is going to run out of suckers, he's going to be run out of the Northern Hemisphere, and will be forever relegated to the Equator as the only place left to talk about Global Warming.

ENSO is a strong

ENSO is a strong interannual cycle; there's nothing new here.  Global warming is an observed interdecadal trend.  The shorter-term ENSO cycle is superimposed on the trend, much like short term stock market fluctuations/recessions/depressions are superimposed on a long term trend.  The BBC article says as much, although it has an MSM-sensational headline.

As far as electrical power plants are concerned, I stongly recommend folks urge their representatives to get cracking on removing barriers to the building of new nuclear power plants.  This is the cleanest form of energy, and one that reduces our foreign oil dependence.  Hydroelectric power also accomplishes this quite nicely, but the water level needs to remain high.

Look Lotr, one shrinking lake does not a Crisis make

Lets see how the Colorado and Utah record snow pack fills up Lake Mead this spring.  I was at Lake Mead, in 2003, and it was really low then, it isn't a recent hapening, it has taken Years and Years.  Lake Mead is a 1960's experiment of how to evaporate water in a Desert where it doesn't rain....it's amazing that it worked for as long as it has.

If La Nina can Kick CO2 emissions in the Head, and Reverse the UN Model, then maybe CO2 isn't the bad guy that everyone thinks it is.  Maybe the UN Climate Model does NOT match REALITY ?

Now Water Vapor, clouds, now there is a Greenhouse Gas . . Just ask the People than live in Seattle, at the Same latitude of Minneapolis without the Freezing winter Temps.

Water Vapor, stacking up against the Cascades, is a Climate model of Greenhouse Gases warming Seattle, waiting to be discovered by Dumass UN Climate ignorant CO2 breathing Scientists.

Lotr So you guys were

Lotr So you guys were pointing out that we were in el nino conditions during the prior 6 years? Or did you ignore that while screaming they were the warmest years?

Yes the ENSO cycle also coorelates to the PDO which is a 25-35 year cycle. When the PDO is in the warm cycle, there is a dominance of el nino. In a PDO cool phase it tends to La Nina. Coincidentally the PDO shifted to warm in the late 70's. Just where most of you guys measure. And now?

40's - 70's the PDO was in a cool phase. And the warmth of the 1930 was during a warm PDO.  With a cooling trend prior...

But the warmers know everything. The rest of us know nothing.

I hate to burst your

I hate to burst your bubble. If you go to , opt regional, then opt southwest, then opt in data type prec, then opt under period annual; and run it you'll see 1895-2007 there has on average been an increase of .06/decade.

If Lake Meade is drying up. It doesn't seem to be because of lack of rain. But then that's just NOAA.

"There is a clear attempt to establish truth not by scientific methods but by perpetual repetition."

danbo - and since 1970

danbo - and since 1970.. since that's the most often referenced period of time (hurricanes and the arctic) - the trend in precipitation is slightly upward. If Lake Meade is low - yup, looks like you nailed it. g

If this warming is truly

If this warming is truly "global" it had better be more than just interdecadal.

The present prevailing temperatures are still not outside the range of the last 10,000 years, much less the range of the previous 4 interglacial warm periods, further proof that whatever effect man is having on the system, it is insignificant in comparison with the forces of nature.

How the model propaganda works

Don't worry they will update the model code to account for this which completely discredits every single thing they ran on them prior to the code update (including any in the IPCC report) but that will not stop them from using those past findings as evidence of AGW!

It must be nice to perpetually update your model code to account for everything that happens as it happens and always claim you can predict something 100 years out with constantly changing code. But hey everyone who knows nothing about computers will continue to buy the propaganda so why should they stop?

Kristen,

Hey! What's happening, dear? How's your track season going? My son's competing at the University of Arizona today. I haven't heard from him, so that's not good news. :-(

Anyway, you gotta love this WMO report. Funny how when La Nina cools things off, the press are all over it. However, we have another El Nino like in 1998, and the heat will all be due to global warming. Nuts.

Hope all is well with you. Say hello to your step-father for me, and don't be such a stranger around here. ns

Hi Noel, I haven’t

Hi Noel,

I haven’t heard much from the media about the La Nina or that global temperatures are low (maybe because I’ve been so busy with school). But after this winter you can’t mention global warming up here because you might get hit on the head with a snow shovel.  : )

We already finished indoor track and outdoor just started Monday but we still practice indoor because of the weather. Mike says hi and that he never misses Newsbusted, he says it’s very funny.

Kristen

Kristen

K,

Good luck in outdoor, and give my best to Mike. ns

Kristen, You do realize

Kristen,

You do realize that what you are doing is not methodology recognized or approved by the leading AGW Scientists, do you not?

You are pattern matching past behavior of the climate system to predict its near term behavior.  This is an old technique amongst the old-time meteorologists.  It was used in WWII with quite some success.

Our friends in the climate catastrophe business are using very sophisticated computer models which are sufficiently mysterious and arcane to laymen as to deter question of the results, even when the results are wrong!

How dare you make predictions like these!  You don't have a fancy computer model!  ;)

Great NB recruiting Noel, KB is famous

Don't need tree ring proxies...I can feel it in my bones.

Has anyone noticed that with the dramatic decline of temperatures in the last year, a graph of world temperatures since 2000 now looks like an upside down hockey stick? Where's Michael Mann when you need him?

Apologies

Earlier I posted a comment on this thread saying that Noel had misquoted the BBC article that he links to near the top of his piece. I have since discovered that BBC apparently posted an earlier version of it article that did indeed include the wording in the form that Noel had it. My apologies for the error.

Hmm, seems I've seen this

"Were the IPCC not dedicated to spreading fear, it would admit its
climate models, on which much of the global warming madness is based,
are flawed
. While pandering politicians, media sycophants and
Hollywood dupes desperately seeking significance have lectured us about
our carbon monoxide emissions, real temperature changes measured over the past 30 years have not matched well with increases predicted by the IPCC's models."

Hmm, seems I've seen this somewhere before.

Link.

"I beg to differ. Al Gore,

"I beg to differ. Al Gore, James Hansen and Gavin Schmidt make up this stuff all the time."

Proving that man-made global warming DOES exist, lol. Just not in quite the way they are trying to mislead the world into believing.

And, if they ever shut up about it and stop pushing this scam, it will go away just as quickly as it began. Crisis averted, no tax increase and crippling of economies required. Well, other than the economies of the shysters pushing this scam, that is.

 With this kind of news,

With this kind of news, it means the AGW collective will have to find ways to avoid the "runaways toward reality"... a la Jim Jones' cult, but hopfully not as brutal.

I was thinking about the media coverage of that Antarctic ice shelf that collapsed recently. They were treating it (the ice) as if it were a living being. Oh...the Icemanity of it all.

Next thing ya know, some entrepreneur will fly a plane loaded with wet suits for da polar bears. Good grief Charlie Brown!
