Media Wrong Again: Poll Finds Most People Didn't Like Obama's Speech

One of the constants espoused by conservative media analysts is that the views of most mainstream press members are not shared by the majority of Americans.

This week represented a fabulous example of this assertion as media member after media member gushed over Barack Obama's performance in Philadelphia on Tuesday while a majority of citizens in a recent poll said that they were less likely to vote for the junior senator from Illinois as result of this speech.

As announced Thursday by Southern Political Report (emphasis added, h/t Protein Wisdom):

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Barack Obama’s speech about race on Tuesday impressed many who witnessed it or read it. But most of America did neither, and many of them -- white and black -- were less persuaded of the speech’s capacity to heal racial wounds, or to put the issue of race behind Obama as he continues his quest for the White House.

That’s according to a new poll by InsiderAdvantage/Majority Opinion. [...]

Of those who knew about the controversy and the speech, we asked, “Taking all this into account, are you more or less likely to support Obama for president?”

Less likely (52%)
More likely (19%)
About the same (27%)
No opinion (2%) [...]

[T]he poll displays no numbers flattering to Obama. Most startling is that blacks by 56% to 31% said the speech made them less likely to vote for him. [...]

Democrats disapproved 48% to 28%, which looks sobering for Obama on first glance, but might portend otherwise. [...]

The disturbing numbers for Obama are the independent voters. By 56% to 13%, they said they’re less likely to vote for him because of the speech.

This finding might explain media's errancy:

And Democratic whites were more sympathetic with the speech’s message than black ones.

As most press members are "Democratic whites," this explains a lot, doesn't it?

GWL

Great article, Noel. So the only people who fell for Obama's bovine scatology were the Guilty White Liberals. The GWL has always included Chrissy Mathews, Timmy Russert, Whiney-Briany Williams, and all the rest, so of course to them, this is a speech that goes down in history as one of the greatest.

They are so pathetic, they are beyond sickening.

GOOLIES!!

Fun-E! That cracks me up....probably 'cause I'm a typical white person.

Right, Joel. Well, the

Right, Joel. Well, the media were all in a swoon over it, and that's what really counts! They are the ones who tell the rest of us what to think.

They must be in serious snit-fit to find the people out here in "flyover land" made up their own minds!!

And this is surprising?

Once again the media builds something up thinking if they report the falsehood enough it'll become fact.

The more I reread that "speech" the more I get disturbed by it. While sometimes Ann C. can get a little too vehement on topics (my opinion) her latest points about this speech are spot on.

Are we headed for a Throw Down?

laree,

I don't think Gerry is through with him yet, either.

I don't think Barack Obama fully grasps the seriously deep squeaze he is really in over all this. It appears he just doesn't get it.

He seems to have a propensity for picking fights with the wrong people, too.

Boy, the dems sure have a

Boy, the dems sure have a couple of duds on their hands this time around. The big dogs at DNC HQ cannot be sleeping comfortably these days.

Imagine my distress. :-)

This Time Around?

When was the last time the Dems nominated anything but a dud? Kerry in '04, Gore in '00, Dukakis in '88...

Meanwhile, some of their better talent, such as the late Paul Tsongas and Joe Lieberman, were tossed over the side.

Del,

I agree, as they have inexplicably served up a steady diet of dud candidates over the years.

But this time around, they are faced with a particularly nasty dilemma, as neither Hillary nor Obama have any real chance on their own, even against a really weak candidate like John McCain.

If the current delegate count holds sway, then Obama will be their man, but there is no possible way the American people are going to vote for the man in sufficient numbers to put him in the White House. It just ain't gonna happen, and the DNC has to know this.

If the party moves to throw him off the ticket completely, then they are going to alienate their traditional black constituency, and get stuck with Hillary as a candidate at the same time. As her negatives are approaching stratospheric heights these days, she would be a sure loser, too, even against someone as lame as McCain.

In either scenario, the Democrat Party is headed for a major rift.

I realize their convention is still a ways off, and much can change in the interim, but if things remain as they are I think they are headed for a brokered convention. As crazy as I know this sounds, I think it quite possible that Al Gore will be brought in to "unify the party" during the convention, before things come completely unraveled. The party cannot afford another 1968 spectacle, and they know it.

Al still has a lot of support in the party, and will be viewed by many as a stabilizing force. IF Obama still has the delegate lead, I think it possible that he would be put in the VP slot, and Hillary would be sent packing. No one will shed much in the way of tears for her, anyway, other than a very small number if die-hard fems.

If I were high up on the DNC totem pole, this is exactly what I would want to see happen, as I think it's the only chance the dims have of avoiding a complete disaster at their convention this summer, as well as in November.

Obamassiah and The Goracle?

Obamassiah and The Goracle?

Can you say: "Disaster of Biblical Proportions?"

Besides, Al isn't playing second fiddle to any wet-behind-the-big-ol'-ears Newbie senator! He's 'big stuff' now.

Mr. Moneybags.

Besides. Tipper wouldn't let him.

hmw,

I think it more than plausible that Al will be drafted for the top spot on the dem ticket. Neither Broom Hilda nor Obama have a chance.

Al's AGW gravy train is running out of fuel. Besides, he doesn't need the money anymore, anyway.

Plus, I seriously believe the rift in the party is far wider than many people think. Far too wide to be healed by either Hillary or Obama.

Media wrong

No surprise their, this news restores my faith  that America will get it right in November Good News indeed on a Good News day ...He has risen...

Voting for McCain is more

Voting for McCain is more like "getting it less wrong".

the Media Won't give Up!

Don't count the media out yet!  They'll keep trumpting their version of the truth until the public starts believeing that BHusseinObama's speech was even better than the TRUE Messiah's Sermonon the Mount!

"The most brilliant propagandist technique will yield no success unless one fundamental principle is borne in mind constantly ... it must confine itself to a few points and repeat them over and over." - Joseph Goebbels (Nazi Propaganda Minister)

"A lie told often enough becomes the truth." - Vladimir Lenin

"The press should be not only a collective propagandist and a collective agitator, but also a collective organizer of the masses." - Vladimir Lenin

"But most of America did

"But most of America did neither,"

This is what worries me. If most people didn't actually see or hear the speech, they would seem to be prime candidates to have the MSM "explain" it to them.

And the "spin" will continue.

The most interesting thing about this poll is when they said

“It’s important to note, however, that we
carefully crafted the poll’s questions. We never mentioned the words
‘race’ or ‘controversy,’ or explained what all the fuss was about. Our
first question was simply, ‘Are you aware of the situation regarding
Sen. Barack Obama’s church pastor and the past public remarks he has
made?’

So there was a deliberate effort not to ‘push poll’
respondents, or to influence their answers in any way,
” Towery said.
“Also note that only one out of 50 poll respondents had no opinion.”

What a concept! It would be nice if every poll were done this way.

Just a Tutsi in a Hutu world

I heard that Obama "healed" 3 people while campaigning in Oregon this weekend. But then again, it may just have been that whole "water into wine thing". Anything is possible with this guy. Just ask his followers.

BO

I don't know why I have this feeling, but I just don't trust the man. He strikes me as an opportunist who is riding on the crest of popularity right now, and has hoodwinked an alarming number of people who fawn and swoon at the mention of his name.  I hope people see through his smooth talk and urbane demeanor before it's too late.

"And Democratic whites

"And Democratic whites were more sympathetic with the speech’s message than black ones.

As most press members are "Democratic whites," this explains a lot, doesn't it?"

I would also contend that the majority of sympathetic Democratic whites overall are the liberal idealists who fully embrace white guilt.

P.S. Thanks for the entry. Even as one who is tuned into politics and current events on a regular basis, I haven't seen anything like the poll you referenced. Just goes to show how badly the MsM wants to keep Obama in the race. (No pun intended.)
