ABC: 'Drop in the Unemployment Rate is Bad News'

ABC's "World News Tonight" had a hard time on Friday without normal anchor Charles Gibson, as in its segment about the employment numbers released by the Labor Department, guest host George Stephanopoulos said the figures were from January 2008.

This was stated as a graphic came on the screen reading "JOBS LOST, January 2008, 63,000." Of course, Labor's report was for the month of February.

Sadly, that wasn't the only mistake "World News" made concerning this crucial piece of economic data, for just as the Associated Press had done earlier in the day, ABC's Business Correspondent Betsy Stark claimed (video available here, h/t NBer Gary Hall):

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Even the drop in the unemployment rate is bad news. Economists say it's a sign that many job seekers are now so discouraged, they've given up the hunt.

What economists, Betsy? Can you name some?

In fact, she didn't interview any economists on air that made such statements. Instead, she talked to an out of work light fixture salesman from Indiana who declared, "This is the worst job market that I've ever encountered."

Imagine that. He's 45, which means that he was of working age during four previous recessions, and this is the worst job market he's encountered? With a current unemployment rate of 4.8 percent versus 10.8 percent in December 1982? Or 7.8 percent in June 1992? This is the worst?

Yet, Stark wasn't done misrepresenting this economic report:

In fact, 450,000 Americans simply gave up trying to find work last month.

Unbelievable nonsense. As NewsBusters reported Friday, the number of people not in the workforce due to discouragement over job prospects DECLINED by 71,000 in February. It DID NOT increase thereby making Stark's claim 100 percent false.

The fact is that the number of Americans in the workforce did decline by 450,000 in February. However, it is still higher than what it was nine months last year, including prior to the surfacing of the subprime mortgage and the credit crisis.

Maybe more important, what folks like Stark are misrepresenting is that the number of people not in the labor force grows nearly every month, and has grown nearly every year since 1980.

Think about it: what's the main reason why people leave the workforce? Retirement. And, as the fastest growing segment of our population are indeed senior citizens, the velocity in the growth of those out of the workforce has accelerated every decade.

But, there are other reasons that people leave the workforce like deciding to stay home with kids, or going back to college, reasons that folks like Stark and Stephanopoulos never want to address when it goes counter to their point.

Want some more proof media members like Stark and Stephanopoulos are all wet on this issue? The number of people not in the workforce but wanting a job now declined by 288,000 in February.

If people were leaving the workforce because they were discouraged about their job prospects, shouldn't the number of people out of the workforce and wanting a job now have increased?

Of course it should, but people like Stark and Stephanopoulos aren't interested in the facts in this report. That would make it difficult to advance their agenda.

In fact, I doubt Stark, Stephanopoulos, and the good folks at ABC News even bothered reading this report. After all, they couldn't even get the month it was addressing right, could they?

NB has hit this one square

NB has hit this one square on the head. This is an example of a deliberate and premeditated attempt to mislead the public for the purposes of influencing an election but to further demonize this administration

  I'm curious how much the

I'm curious how much the bad winter weather has affected the economy.  When it's very cold and/or snowy there is always sluggish consumer spending.  When your heating bill jumps there is less for other things.  'Global Warming' was better because less was spent on heating.  Now that we have 'Climate Change' we are freezing our butts off digging through the snow.

Shhhhhhhh!

You are not supoposed to ask that. That might be the reason and they don't want to hear it. With global warming and lost jobs when the winter is bad it is a lose-lose for them.

The job market is still better than it was when George was working for the Clintons.

"Forget change, I want improvement!"

And if a lot of the

And if a lot of the current slowdown is weather related as soon as Spring arrives we will hear lots of economic reports that include  'faster/larger than expected, unexpected improved consumer confidence, experts surprised...., yada yada yada.  My favorite lines though whip saw your brain by stating " in spite of a terrible economy the jobless numbers are down and inflation is minimal".  huh!!?

Even the drop in the

Even the drop in the unemployment rate is bad news. Economists say it's
a sign that many job seekers are now so discouraged, they've given up
the hunt.

Wow. She didn't even say "some" economists say that. So they're all in agreement on that? Heh.

That canard is their old standbye when unemployment goes down; it's not the first time they've used it. And I agree, they fail to take into consideration the people who quit work with no intention of going back.

And another comment on the 45-year old guy who says "This is the worst job market that I've ever encountered."

Exactly how many times has he had to find a new job? Was he let go or did he quit, hoping to find something better? Is "light fixture salesman" the only thing he knows how to do? What are his requirements for accepting another job?

Lots of unasked questions here....but it's sure easy to simply quote someone unemployed who says the job market is bad.

Noel: "What economists,

Noel: "What economists, Betsy? Can you name some?"

Hold on, I can!!! A top notch one! One with no agenda, and purely objective in his views!

Paul Krugman!!! LOL

And sadly, when you talk to

And sadly, when you talk to people here and there who happened to have seen that report, they'll use numbers from it to spread the word as gospel.  Another classic and unfortunate example of the media's power.

Remember what "ABC" stands for...

Always Been Confused.

Noel, about those job seekers who have "given up"....

I took enough economics in college, and have listened to enough Boortz shows, along with many others, to know that much of the reporting on matters economic is essentially a game of smoke and mirrors. However, there is a certain aspect of this that has always bugged me:

I know for a fact that many Americans who are included on the "poverty list" are people who outright own million dollar homes, yet have no measurable "income." I personally believe their inclusion is intended to inflate the numbers solely to provide more ammo to the poverty pimps among us, but I could be wrong.

When it comes to stories about the number of unemployed, I have always heard that those who have actually given up looking for work are not actually included in the total number of unemployed persons. I have always found this to be somewhat odd, given the above reference to the number of the wealthy homeowners who show up in the poverty numbers.

My question is, why would the people who are eligible, but not actively seeking work, not be included in the unemployment numbers, as it seems to me they should be?

Also, why are many wealthy Americans popping up on the official poverty list simply because they have no measurable incomes?

There appears to be a bit of a contradiction here, or am I missing something obvious?

Theme for Election '08: I want my mommy!

The GOOD news is that

The GOOD news is that my Anheuser-Busch stock should go through the ROOF over the next few months, seeing that the media is trying to depress everyone into drinking.  I think I will pickup some R.J. Reynolds stock too.

 Isn't the FCC supposed to

Isn't the FCC supposed to investigate television broadcasts that willingly mislead the public? How have news organizatons avoided this? I remember the head honcho of those "smiling Bob" commercials is out of luck now because of false claims.

MSM and Facts

When our next graduating class of journalists hit the bricks for jobs their burden will be eased by the mantra of the MSM.  "If you don't have the FACTS don't worry, just make them up , and if they don't fit your agenda do the same."  Never underestimate the gullibility of the American people.

As a younger person I relied on the MSM to deliver an objective report to the American people. Today they deliver something kinda sorta resembling truth but just not quite there unless they get caught.

Red

"Don't let the bastards grind you down"

IT'S THE END OF THE WORLD AS WE KNOW IT KENNETH Jr!

Wake me up when the unemployment rate tops Europe during their robust economic cycle.

Template is failing

The MSM is just following their tried and true template of facts be damned, repeat the lie enough and it will become accepted as fact.

I believe the template is failing due to the onslaught of "alternative media" where more and more people are turning for their news as evidenced by plummeting newspaper sales and network news viewers.

For example, as hard as the MSM tried, they could not make the surge in Iraq a failure.  Since failing to turn their lie into accepted fact the MSM has dropped the story.

An even larger example would be AlGore's global warming.  After years of propagandizing global warming the media still has not been able to pass off this lie as fact.  There are more and more scientists arguing against human caused climate change than ever before and as hard as the MSM has tried to discredit these views they have not been successful.  Close but no cigar.

Keep up the good work Noel, as I believe newsbusters deserves a share of credit for the falling MSM numbers.

While it would be great to

While it would be great to agree with you, I can't. The truth is that the American people, at least the dimocratic part, are about to give the nod to one of two nomimees that no matter the success in Iraq will, upon gaining office, dismantle our efforts there by withdrawing our soldiers.

In regard to global warming, the present Congress and our president, have already signed into law an "energy bill" that does nothing to increase supply of needed energy. And, many aspects of it move us in the direction of using very inefficient sources of energy like solar, wind, and fuels derived from plants.

The facts are that there is a vast left wing media conspiracy that essentially engineered our canidate for the presidency.

While NB, Hannity, Limbaugh, Coulter, et al are powerfull voices, they are always reactionary in nature. They are not making the news, they are there counter those that are.

While, "repeat the lie enough and it will become accepted as fact" is certainly being used, more importantly it is getting the lie out there that in the first place that just isn't being beat as a tactic.

Look over what is posted by NB, if you don't believe me. And, look at the ratios involved. For every false or biased drive by report which is read, listened to, or viewed by tens of millions of Americans, only thousands, like at this web site, get an alternative view.
