Climate Propaganda Works: 'Global Warming Equals More Snowfall'

Photo of Noel Sheppard.

One of the biggest concerns of media analysts and press watchers is the brainwashing effect bad reporting has on the public.

No finer example of this propagandist power exists than with the liberal bogeyman known as global warming, for the constant climate alarmism being spewed 24 hours a day, seven days a week has tremendously and demonstrably impacted the views of the citizenry.

Of course, that's the goal.

Consider the following e-mail message I received this morning from someone that appears to work for the government of Ontario, Canada (name and e-mail address withheld, emphasis added):

What are you, retarded?

Global warming = MORE snowfall. Not less.
Meaning snowfall records will be broken.

Delicious, isn't it?

What set this man off to send such an e-mail message to a perfect stranger? This article from last Thursday addressing the record snowfall around the country.

Sadly, what this angry reader clearly missed was that the piece was a response to all those hysterical press proclamations last year that global warming would significantly reduce snowfall around the world resulting in huge financial losses to ski resorts and winter vacation homeowners.

Alas, poor reading comprehension on the part of the citizenry -- even those in neighboring countries -- might be our least concern in this situation. What should scare us all much more is the idea that the propaganda attack regarding this issue is so effective that folks will blame every weather-related event -- even record snowfall! -- on global warming.

The fear-mongering is working, ladies and gentlemen.

Be afraid. Be very afraid.

As someone who has watched Canada turn from a once great country into what Pat Buchanan accurately described as "Kanuckistan" let me say that this loon is a typical mainstream Canadian and it's shameful.

Ahem?

...this loon is a typical mainstream Canadian and it's shameful.

Ahem. I would like to correct your statement to read, "this loon is a typical Canadian liberal." Canada has a growing number of its citizens who are catching on to the myth of AGW; we still have a long way to go, but we're making progress.

(That said, DBO, I can understand why you might think these loons are mainstream, as a disproportionate percentage of our tree-hugging loons seem to gravitate out there to the left coast! I theorize that it's because the moderate temperatures allow them to skip through the forests in their birkenstocks year-round...)

Noel,

This type of reverse-psychology is proof positive that the GW crowd is hanging over the cliff by their fingertips. Clinging to anything, ANYTHING that will keep their hoax alive. Anybody with a shred of sense would see or read this and laugh hysterically! Textbook, the personal attack, then the unfounded claim.

Now let me be the first to

Now let me be the first to say I don't support global warming at all...but I'll say as a meteorologist when you have warmer air it will hold a lot more moisture. So there could be at least a little legitamacy to their lunacy (you know minus the fact it has to be below 32 degrees on the ground for snow to occur).

The reality is the record snowfall is more of the weather pattern this year as the same area is getting slammed by storm after storm after storm. This isn't due to warming, it's due to the jet stream pattern remaining the same.

Do you realize how much it costs to run for office? More than any honest man could afford. -Montgomery Burns

100% Correct

This winter pattern has been perfect for alowing ample Gulf Of Mexico moisture to be brought northward along with enough cold air over the Midwest, Great Lakes, and Rural Northeast US to cause the winter storms which has dumped all this snow. Most of the temps have been in between 25-32 during these snow storms, warm enough for the moisture, yet cold enough for snow.

This same type of pattern is also conducive for some Severe thunderstorms over portions of the Tenn Valley and the Southeast US as we have seen several times this winter.

Global warming has nothing to do with this winter's snow fall.

Tater

Tater,

If you recall what the media's position on this was last year, they contended that rising temperatures would raise elevation levels at which precipitation would be snow versus rain. As a result, there'd eventually be no snow at the bases where resorts and vacation homes were located.

As we both would agree, warmer temperatures, especially when combined with El Ninos, indeed do result in increased precipitation. However, as the globe warms, this precipitation would more and more be in the form of rain not snow.

As a meteorologist, don't you agree with that? ns

and then there's the coming droughts and fires...

... and then there's the coming droughts and fires... caused by global warming.

The entire west and southwest will be destroyed by drought. There will be no snowpack in the Sierra's.  Fires will rage out of control. Millions of people will have to migrate (even the new 20 million immigrants) from CA  and other states because of water shortages (LA Times) .. but to where? The southeast U.S. will be experience the same scenerio.

And the Sahara desert will become drier. Wow!

Noel I just got back so I

Noel I just got back so I don't know if you'll read this....

Theoretically yes...warmer temps would mean more rain and less snow everywhere. The only problem GWs and the MSM didn't forsee is that it's been much colder in Canada and Alaska compared to the last few years and the jet stream pattern has basically let that cold air come into the Rockies, Plains, and Northeast (and much of the Southeast) all winter long. So you have warmer and moist air from the gulf running into a non-stop supply of arctic air...viola tons of snow.

It would be rain, if the arctic air coming from Canada was not as cold all the time (which I wish would happen...this has been a colder winter than in the past few years). Winter 2006-2007 if you remember the bitterly cold air was in Siberia and it was mild in Canada...not much in the way of snow. Well with GWs they assumed it would probably happen again.

Tater

Tater,

It would be rain, if the arctic air coming from Canada was not as cold all the time...

Hmmm. So, it would be raining if it wasn't so damned cold. And this proves that global warming will make more snow how?

Forgive me, but haven't you just proved MY point...rather well, I might add? ns

They have a lot of assuming going on there.

Forget the snow; what this

Forget the snow; what this boob that emailed Noel conveniently forgot is, that historical record low temperatures were destroyed in many places both in the southern and northern hemisphere this and last year.  I believe the quote was something on the order of: "The total amount of cooling ranges from 0.65C up to 0.75C -- a value large enough to wipe out most of the warming recorded over the past 100 years."

I will go on to say that one year does not a climate trend make; however, it is a very large anamoly in the face of AGW....

Global warming is a liberal hoax. The Ontario Liberal government is populated by left wing nuts who spend their vacations in Cuba and believe that Canada is "superior" to the US because of "Universal health care". A liberal is liberal no matter where they reside.

Just one correction though. The Ontario government have "employees". Who they "work for" is anybodys guess.

Using that logic, shouldn't it snow more in July and August than all the other months combined?

Actually, I can vouch for this theory.    We recently had a new heating & cooling system put in, and every time I turned the thermostat up, it got colder.  At first I was petrified that there might be some localized pocket of Global Warming going on, seeing as how there were SUV's in the driveway, but fortunately the thermostat was just wired incorrectly.

Tater:

I do agree with you snow levels are a poor proxie for temp.  I remember El Nino 978/98.  Holy crap there was a lot of snow in the BC mountains.  Phenomenal ski year.  As we all know, 97/98 was a very warm year.  As Noel and many others have said, one year, does not a proof make, (yes I paraphrase)

As a meteorogist, in your opinion would a better proxie be how far south the snow line goes?  (I'm not sure if I'm asking the question correctly.).  As someone who grew up in Windsor, (across the border from Detroit), we were always on the line between snow/rain.  i.e. gulf of mexico warm air battling with the cold arctic air from the prairies.  In a colder environment, the colder air masses would be stronger and tend to push further south and pushing the snow line further south.  Chicago always seemed to get more snow than rain as compared to us.  As a child who loved snow days from school, I would just hate seeing Chicago getting all this snow and we'd get rain.  The line would follow up from Detroit towards Toronto and it would vary up or down.  Could be distorted hindsight mind you.  Seems this year, the front lines have pushed further south, up from southern Indiana and along the Ohio valley.  Ergo, would this year's large snow cover area be a better marker demonstrating the degree of cooling that's taken place?

Sorry Tater, I meant to make this as a reply below.

There are 2 types of politicians.  Those who know AGW is a sham and stupid ones.

I know this question wasn't

I know this question wasn't directed at me, but as a meteorologist too, I'll answer.

If you remember early in winter, Oklahoma and Kansas were getting alot of winter weather, ice, sleet, and some snow. While Colorado and much of the Rocky Mountains were getting pounded with snow. This is because the Jet stream was located over those areas. The storms that form over Western Texas/Oklahoma traditionaly head towards the Midwest causing Chicago, Madison, Milwaukee, and Des Moines to get Snow or sleet while places like Cincinnati, Detroit, and Cleveland get rain. All of the snow that fell in the Rockies and the plains created conditions favorable for the cold air in Canada to begin flowing further south.

This cause a slight pattern change just after Christmas, where most of the storms began to form closer to the Gulf Of Mexico resulting in Indianapolis, and Detroit to get more snow, while places like Cleveland, Pittsburgh and Lexington would get a mix of snow, sleet, freezing rain, and rain. These storms again, went right along the jet stream, which was further south as you noted. All that snow that was over much of the Midwest alowed the cold air to remain in place.

I hope this answers your question.

News flash r22. We here in

News flash r22. We here in Oklahoma are still fighting the cooling and the snow and sleet. And its MARCH! For years and years and years, I was on the lake in March, fishing pre-spawn and spawing bass. Tournaments are being cancled this weekend because of the impending weather, (like they can predict 2 days in advance). You meterologists are screwing with my fishin, and I want you to change the weather here so it is a little warmer. I do my part. I do the SUV and the smoke belching 2 cycle outboard. Now its up to you guys...:-)))

Jet Stream

Tater/R22weiss:

Let me rephrase my question.  In the event of a colder year, will that tend to push the jet stream lower and hence drawing the cold arctic air lower

Or

is it the jet stream draws the colder air down and we need to look at the drivers of the jet stream to determine if North American winter's.

Thanks for replying.  I really do appreciate it. It's fun to learn cool (pun intended) stuff.

Cheers

There are 2 types of politicians.  Those who know AGW is a sham and stupid ones.

Yeah what r22 said :). I

Yeah what r22 said :).

I wish I could draw pictures of the jet stream pattern, that more than anything determines what type of winter an area will have. It's more of a function of how far the jet stream goes south and how cold the air in Canada and Alaska are. Last year Canada and Alaska were mild, and the jet stream rarely took dips to the south...ergo mild winter, less snow. This year Canada and Alaska are bitterly cold and the jet stream has looked like a wave all winter long (in fact it seems like 1 or 2 times a week this winter there is a surge of cold air that affects the northeast).

So yes the old saying is true...one year does not make a climate trend. Next winter it could be 40-80 degrees, hardly any snow, and few cold snap depending on how the pattern shapes up.

Global warming

The weather gets hot, it's global warming, the weather gets cold it's global warming. Eventually, even the dumbest amongst figure out it's a scam.

As a corollary, cold is much worse than warm.
