For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: South America on brink of war (paragraph break eliminated):
South America was on the brink of war yesterday as Venezuela and Ecuador amassed troops on the Colombian border in response to the killing of a Marxist rebel leader. Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez threatened to join the rebels in a war to overthrow hard-line Colombian President Alvaro Uribe, a key ally of the United States, deploying tanks, fighter jets and thousands of troops along the Colombian border.
How serious is this? Will America be forced to get involved at some point? Is there any upside to this, namely, the possibility that this could lead to a Chavez overthrow? Might this impact our elections if it escalates vis a vis hurt the inexperienced and dovish Obama?

March 3, 2008 - 12:03 ET by futbolisgreat1Sarcasmo,
I don't think anyone doubts or is oblivious to the United States being involved in helping the Colombian government fight the drug lords and the Marxist Guerrillas in Colombia.
I mean, you have to be quite dumb to believe the USA didn't help the Colombian army kill the Marxist guerilla leader.
What is good about Chavez's reaction is that now there is ZERO doubt that Chavez is in bed with the Marxist Guerillas trying to overthrow the Colombian government.
I am Venezuelan, I have family in Venezuela and it is scary what is going on right now. The truth is, that Chavez is no longer as popular as he use to be (about time). There are daily demonstrations against him for food shortages by the same people that once supported him. He no longer has the poor by his side. So, as many dictators have done, he wants an external problem to be greater than the internal problems so he can distract Venezuelans from the evil dictator that he is.
Furthermore, if Venezuela and Ecuador go to war against Colombia, the USA would already be involved, at least giving military supplies and training to the Colombian army.
The mobilization of 10 combat batallions by any government is no joke. I do hope that the Venezuelan people overthrow this pathetic fool.
If we're not oblivious
March 3, 2008 - 12:11 ET by sarcasmoHow come people don't ever know what it costs??? Hell, I was just surprised by the DOMESTIC pricetag of the failed drugwar, and the secret Columbian war cost wasn't even counted in that. I don't think the "mainstream" news media has done a very good job of covering this story. At least they're finally, but weakly, covering rampant corruption elsewhere...

March 3, 2008 - 12:44 ET by futbolisgreat1Sarcasmo,
I don't know if you can call it a complete failure. Druge usage in the USA is down by over 25%, is this directly due to the wars on drug? let's hope so, right?
but yes, the price tag is incredible, but I am a bit bias since I was born in Venezuelan and have family in Venezuela. If Colombia didn't have the USA backing I can guarantee you that Chavez would have already invaded Colombia. I know, selfish of me. But Colombia is serving as a check and balance against this idiot Chavez.
It's a complete failure
March 3, 2008 - 16:38 ET by sarcasmoAnd an expensive one, and I'm not sure where you get your stats, but they always depend on a starting point, and only mine ever seem to count tax-money costs. In fact, that's part of what I find odd about conservatives. They're totally able to distrust obese-government "science" on AGW, but give them the same level of "science" crappiness when it comes to their holy drugwar and history shows that they'll swallow just-about any form of incompetence hook, line & sinker. Pointing out this logical inconsistency has, in the past, invoked the ol' cloak, but we'll see what happens this time.

March 3, 2008 - 20:29 ET by sarcasmoWithout even a page-down to read the entire article in the case of #1. MY analysis is that conservatives do indeed seem to have variable standards for crappy "science" depending on the political issue, just as I already said. Crappy climate "science" clearly gets much less of a pass than equally-crappy drugwar "science" gets around here.
I pointed out this obvious double-standard when it comes to, er, "Political Science." You have yet to address, much less refute, my analysis. Instead, you chose to try to change the subject from the conservatives' double standard on science-crappiness by asking a question which clearly proved you're back in click-no-links mode, with predictable results from me...Reading is fundamental.

2.) What is the obvious double standard regarding "Political science"? Is political science not getting as much play as, let us say Biology? Is political science not getting as much discussion as geology or geography?
Regarding your positions on political science, I would assume you take the standard macro view that politics is the allocation and transfer of power in decision-making, the roles and systems of governance including governments and international organizations, political behavior and public policies. They measure the success of governance and specific policies by examining many factors, including stability, justice, material wealth.
Or do you have another scientif theorem called political science?
Do you see
March 4, 2008 - 17:56 ET by sarcasmoWhy I think you have problems with reading comprehension?? I sure hope so...
Anyway, from what I've seen, you have yet to read the link in question. I'm now wondering whether you're even reading what I'm writing. The double standard I've noticed, once again, regards conservatives' attitudes towards crappy government funded "science" (I called it "political science" as a little joke, complete with scare-quotes, but that one apparently passed right over your head!).
Said "science" comes both in the AGW field and the holy tax and spend drugwar field, yet conservatives tend to notice the crappy science (evidence abounds, and google's your friend) on only AGW, despite a far-longer history of equally-crappy "science" when it comes to the holy drugwar. Hence my accusation of an obvious double standard, since I look at both the tax and spend drugwar & AGW as the same kind of biased big-government BS.

Sarc: I am not interested
March 4, 2008 - 18:28 ET by BDSarc:
I am not interested in others work, only yours.
I do read everything you reply with, which is why I then take the time to analyze that which you have written. I now take the time to analyze you most recent post.
1.) Said "science" comes both in the AGW field and the holy tax and spend drugwar field,
I concur that the science proposed to establish Anthropogenic Global warming is flimsy at best, but also note that most of that which I disagree with is not produced by governmental agencies, and that which I do observe from the government on this issue does not provide more than observation. There is no conclusion provided by most of it which is fine since it IS simply a series of observations. Do you have issues beyond this on Global warming?
2.) and the holy tax and spend drugwar field
Please illustrate for us exactly why you use phrase as listed. Is there a cathedral produced in Washington DC that contains all of the narcotics seized on the southern border? Is there a sacrament whereby IRS agents in said cathedral pour cash over the top of said stack of narcotics? Do government agents form a circle holding hands surrounding this huge stack wearing white sheets while chanting "Olly-Oh - Oh" as the stack burns?
Please justify the following words placed in thsi statement.
3.) yet conservatives tend to notice the crappy science (evidence abounds, and google's your friend)
Please provide significant coherent examples of faulty science of form such as Geology, Biology, Geography, physics, etc in regards to the US effort to halt illicit drugs entry into the US. Please do not simply reply that I should look it up on google because the onus for proof is upon the claiment (That would be you).
4.) despite a far-longer history of equally-crappy "science" when it comes to the holy drugwar.
Still no examples of said failure of scientific thought regarding this issue.
5.) Hence my accusation of an obvious double standard, since I look at both the tax and spend drugwar & AGW as the same kind of biased big-government BS.
Yet you still do not prove nor provide examples.
I don't care if you're not interested in others' work
March 4, 2008 - 18:38 ET by sarcasmoIn this case, another person's work answered all your questions quite well from the start. Your inability to click a link isn't a substitute for coherent argument (far from it!!). When last I checked, NPR and NASA were both pushing AGW. And if you can't find examples of crappy drugwar "science" I simply can't help you because I have no time for it. You may not like the fact that I've busted an obvious double-standard when it comes to crappy "science," but the facts remain the facts. Conservatives worship the big government drugwar even as they oppose various other government interventions in life. The worship becomes obvious because they throw good money after bad and lie, as the link you refuse to click shows.
JMR
A corruption-story the TV media will-not cover.
Another attempt at teaching analytical thinking...
March 4, 2008 - 19:12 ET by BD1.) No examples provided of "Crappy Drugwar Science." Therefore we must assume they do not exist.
2.) NPR is not a government agency...
" ...A privately supported, not-for-profit membership organization, NPR serves a growing audience of 26 million Americans each week in partnership with more than 860 independently operated, noncommercial public radio stations. Each NPR Member Station serves local listeners with a distinctive combination of national and local programming. With original online content and audio streaming, NPR.org offers hourly newscasts, special features and ten years of archived audio and information. "
It does receive money from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, and many of its stations are private entities on college campuses. But the employees are not Governmental agents.
3.) NASA has provided observational data as described previously.
You may not like the fact that I've busted an obvious double-standard when it comes to crappy "science," but the facts remain the facts.
Facts not in evidence.
Conservatives worship the big government drugwar
Still awaiting your proof of a religious nature in regards to current counter-narcotics policy.
I am tempted to say that you, SARCASMO, are the one who approaches this topic on a religious footing since you take so much on faith. Perhaps the first tenet of your "Religion of the tax and Spend Drugwar" is that efforts to impinge on illicit narcotic trafficking are evil and doomed to failure. The second portion of your dogma might be that the Evil US goverment does what it does to prevent the sharing of the holy sacrement that is "Just Gods herb, dude."
The worship becomes obvious because they throw good money after bad and lie, as the link you refuse to click shows.
Please provide logic to back up this statement. Just because we provide moey to fire departments that occasionally fail to defeat fires, does this mean we are facing the problem of fire control on a religious basis? Just because we fund a department of defense that occasionally loses a battle or skirmish, does that mean we are facing the issue of national defense on a religious basis?

March 3, 2008 - 11:15 ET by Hero SquadA few random thoughts:
1. When I went outside this morning, noticed my neighbor had put up a Hillary placard in his yard. So it's official; I want Obama to win the nomination, and deliver the knockout blow tomorrow. Last thing I need is to see that sign from now until November.
2. Maybe I'll get a Nader for president bumper sticker for my car. Oh, I would never vote for him, of course. But think about how apoplectic liberal motorists will get when they see what they believe is a vote being siphoned away from their candidate.
3. Did Roger the Shrubber and other Steelers fans catch the subtle but clear shout out to Myron Cope on SNL last Saturday? At the end of Weekend Update, Seth Meyers whipped out a terrible towel and started waving it in the air, no doubt a tribute to the voice of the Steelers who died last week. March 3, 2008 - 11:19 ET by KC MulvilleSomebody ask Obama what he would do as president right now. Let's hear his how his self-promoting "character" and judgment can solve this crisis. (Ought to be a hoot.)
Our election aside, I think the South American situation is something we'd better focus on, and right away. I'm one of those people who thinks that South America has tremendous potential, positive and negative. Chavez and Venezuela's oil is only a fraction of the story. Colombia has been fighting the drug gangs for years, and if that government falls, we could be looking at a heap of trouble. This is a critical time. If Chavez extends his influence, at a time when our Democratic Congress has been useless to Colombia, we could be looking at Latino resentment for decades to come.
Lots of angles in play here.
Nothing is as it seems,
March 3, 2008 - 12:07 ET by dscottNothing is as it seems, quite possibly this is posturing in an attempt to drive up the price of oil further. The Iranians are laying low and it's Chavez's turn to make trouble to give further instability to the oil future's markets. Both Chavez and the Madhatter of Iran have seen their strategy as successful thus far and will continue in an attempt to push the US into Recession. Their hope is quite clear, they want the Dems to win in November knowing full well that the US will reverse policy from assertive pursuit of the GWOT to one of co-existance where the UN runs foreign policy. Once the US ceases to be assertive, they are free to pursue their goals of world/regional domination without hinderance.
The Europeans have shown themselves to be incompetent in Afghanistan, the Russians will handsomely profit off the high oil prices and China will pursue it's own interest in Africa without consideration of the consequences as in the Sudan with Darfur.

You get the first question, Barry
March 3, 2008 - 13:22 ET by KC MulvilleI wasn’t thinking that way, but that makes perfect sense, now that you mention it.
I was thinking more that Chavez is taking advantage of weaknesses, ours and Colombia’s. Robert Novak has a series of columns about Colombia and the Democratic Congress. On the one hand, the Democrats have been skeptical of Uribe’s government, and that has sparked some crackdown on corruption. (Give credit when due.) However, the Democrats have been sitting on the free trade “quid pro quo” and that has weakened the Uribe government considerably.
Chavez may very well be looking to reassert himself after Venezuelans rejected his attempt to become president for life. He may see this confrontation as his ticket. He may figure that this ongoing “crisis” will keep him in power indefinitely. And with the continuing chaos in Ecuador, Chavez may think he can make them his personal satellite. Chavez has to figure that the US won’t extend itself militarily, and can’t afford another diplomatic mess. Therefore, he can strut and brag that he’s taking on the US puppet, and that we can’t do anything to stop him.
Look for the Democrats (both Obama and Hillary) to take the cowardly way out, and simply use this as a way to bash Bush. But I’d still love to hear what Obama’s foreign policy “character” thinks we should do. Let’s hear Barry’s recommendation.

So according to liberals
March 3, 2008 - 12:19 ET by Jack BauerSo according to liberals it's verbotten to mention the Hussein word in relation to Barack H. Obama.
And it's bad form to print photographs of BHO at public events...
Okay -- any bar on talkng about his White mother? I'm white so that's okay, right?
Such as: who was Stanley (yes, really) Anne Durham?
Well it appears she was a typical blame America first, far-leftist, communist sympathizer with her head up her butt, for starters.
Mmmm, now why he was attracted to Michelle "first time I've been proud to be an American" Robinson is beginning to become a little clearer.
It's o-k, Jack, up to a point
March 3, 2008 - 13:01 ET by Mica the MagnificentIt's o-k for a white guy to talk about Obama's white mother
UNTIL
you stated she was - and I quote -
" . . .communist sympathizer with her head up her butt, for starters."
May I remind you, Jack Bauer, that once you entered 'up the butt' territory, which is very dark, you must stop talking immediately!
If I told you why, some people would consider me a racist.
There's a part of me that likes a watermelon sandwich on white bread with mayonnaise. - - -First draft of Obama trying to pander to two audiences at once.
gloria steinem ...
March 3, 2008 - 12:44 ET by pmohbucki can't believe this idiot's comments marginalizing mccain being a POW are getting a pass.
i didn't think bra-burning was on the same scale as being tortured in a vietnamese prison ... until i realized steinem was probably too stupid to take the bra off before setting it on fire.
Steinem

Quite likely she knows exactly how to take it off.

Seems to me we had better
March 3, 2008 - 12:47 ET by ConservativeRexSeems to me we had better take care of the terrorist on our home front first. I am referring to those green weenie idiots called the ELF. These people are burning down houses in the Pacific Northwest and it will only be a matter of time before they kill someone.
We know they protest at every economic summit in the states. The next time they do, round them all up and throw 'em in jail, get them to talk about who is burning down buildings and what not. A little waterboarding wold do them some good. Because they may be better off being caught by the government then being caught by everyday citizens. They wouldn't like that.
Today's Democrat or Not
March 3, 2008 - 13:36 ET by ricklailI almost had the big one today when I read this. It took them 3 paragraphs to mention that Wright was Dem.

Ho-Hmmm...Here we go again
March 3, 2008 - 23:09 ET by JerInteresting...in the article you linked, it didn't even require the completion of the opening sentence before encountering the revelation that Wright is a Democrat.

Hillary's "accountability"
March 3, 2008 - 14:17 ET by MassConservativeI wonder if Hillary even reviews her own speeches:
http://www.nytimes.c...
Here is my favorite part:
"Mrs. Clinton’s task is to beat Mr. Obama, and her crowds on Sunday reacted well when she said they could hold her accountable for her “solutions” while Mr. Obama was offering only “speeches.”
“I want you to come to the White House and say, ‘I heard you in Akron; when are you going to produce those jobs?’ ” Mrs. Clinton said at the rally here"
Isn't this the same woman who basically just blamed the American people for her failure to live up to her 2000 Senate campaign promise to create the 200,000 new jobs in New York (vs a loss of 30,000) when she said that she had assumed Al Gore would be President?
Some accountability.

Yeah, that "gold" stuff is totally old-fashioned
March 3, 2008 - 15:10 ET by sarcasmoAnd useless in a modern world. After all, "experts" say-so, and they're always right! Just like they were about inflation, come to think of it! ;)

2008 International Conference on Climate Change
March 3, 2008 - 15:39 ET by ricklailNoel I hope you are paying attenion to this conference. From what I can read about it it is an alternative to Owl Gore's histeria.
Dr. Thomas Sowell's column last Thursday was about it.
Is the Heartland Institute a libertarian think tank? It appears they have global warming pegged. I did find this report on the conference.
How many want to bet the MSM does not cover this.

Yeah, I'd say so
March 3, 2008 - 16:08 ET by sarcasmoHeartland is kinda an outside the beltway version of CATO, with a focus on free-markets as solutions to problems others might wish to solve via larger governments.

The John Locke Foundation
March 3, 2008 - 16:31 ET by ricklailThe John Locke Foundation here in NC also seems to lean towards libertarian. I read a lot of their policy papers. They deal mostly with NC but they do occ
