David Letterman Not Happy About John McCain's Age

"Late Show" viewers must be starting to wonder whether David Letterman hates old people or just John McCain.

Maybe more important, is the host having a hard time hiding his support for Barack Obama?

Take for example Thursday's opening monologue. As the topic changed to the presidential campaign, Letterman focused most of his comedic attacks on the GOP frontrunner and also-ran Ralph Nader while actually not offering one joke about Barack Obama.

For those interested, here was the joke tally from Thursday's monologue:

  • Ralph Nader - 7
  • John McCain - 6
  • Hillary Clinton - 2
  • Barack Obama - 0
You think Dave and his writers might be Obama backers, or was ignoring the current favorite to win it all just an innocent oversight?

Second thought...How old is Letterman? Could he be doing a riff of "You think I'm old? How about this guy?"

One thing about Letterman,

One thing about Letterman, even when he offers up a funny joke, he will often beat it into the ground.

Do NOT discriminate on

Do NOT discriminate on race.

Do NOT discriminate on sex

Do NOT discriminate on religion (unless about Christinans)

FREELY DISCRIMINATE ON AGE

I don't do

I don't do Letterman.

Perfect example of why above...besides that he is not funny one bit to me...never has been from the little I have seen.

David Letterman Not Happy About John McCain's Age?

LOL-Well, that make two things Dave and I have in common. :-)

John McCain is a liberal. He said so himself.

In the tank

I thought that he was in the tank for Hillary ever since he gave her the test on New York right before her first senate race. Perhaps he is a front-runner band wagon hopper.

Guess Dave has a problem

Guess Dave has a problem with " grown-ups" ...

Well, Dave Letterman and Jay

Well, Dave Letterman and Jay Leno have always felt safe making fun of the white, old males.  Afterall, white, old males are all asleep when these buffoons are doing their little shtick because SOMEBODY has to get eight hours of sleep and show up to work the next morning to move the country forward!  Somebody has to earn a living and pay taxes to benefit all the knuckleheads that stay up late and collect welfare!.

Sorry, I get angrier and angrier the more I read the news :)

mm... Very

mm...

Very understandable.

I also agree with the premise of your post.

I outgrew Dave when I

I outgrew Dave when I graduated from college.  When you give up the frat-boy mentality you just grow tired of his antics.  Only thing this guy ever did well was his dropping of watermelons onto Broadway Ave. and his stupid pet tricks.  Other than that, his punch lines are dry.

Letterman has always been a blatant Liberal

Anytime he talks about politics he is usually misinformed. This usually makes his political jokes not very funny. I have seen him get more and more vindictive about politics over the years and I stopped watching him some time ago. All I will watch late night anymore will be Conan or Redeye. Here is a perfect example of his blatant bias:

I imagine that Oprah told

I imagine that Oprah told Dave that Obama jokes were a no-no...:-\

I can't really equate Dave's humor with "frat boy mentality." If so, his jokes would all be about raging keggers, barn dances, and how awesome rufies are.

Late night

Man, I haven't watched Letterman since the late 80s until I looked at this clip. What a complete dickhead he's become. And such fine treatment of a "guest." What a shame; he used to be funny.

Self-deprecating humor

I figure it's like short people making short people jokes or rednecks or whatever. It's okay for Letterman to do it because he's one of them. He'll be asking someone to pass the Geritol soon enough himself.

   So to make fun of

So to make fun of McCain as a doddering old fool is just good time fun but to merely mention b. hussein obama's middle name is gutter politics?

Hillary the victim

. . . and don't forget to go easy on the girl.

I don't suppose you think

I don't suppose you think the Letterman show is a different setting than the political arena?

I used to love Letterman

but now he comes across as a mean spirited jerk. Did anyone see his "jokes" about Mitt Romney on the day he bowed out of the race? He uttered some of the nastiest lines I've heard this campaign.

I think it's pretty comical

I think it's pretty comical to hear Letterman complain about McCain's age when Dave acts just as much like a cranky old coot. I think the only other comedian who actually matches and passes Dave in living up to every stereotype of old men is George Carlin. And like George, Dave hasn't been funny for a LONG time.

How sad for Dave

There was a time, back in the 80's, when Dave was actually funny.  Not any more.

So, I guess Dave's "joke" system is this:  "_______ looks like the kinda guy that _______."

I lost track of how many of his jokes went exactly that way.  I'd watch it again to count how many times, but it was painful enough hearing it the first time.

It's like Foxworthy's "You

It's like Foxworthy's "You might be a redneck if..."

 As others have noted,

As others have noted, Letterman has just been getting more bitter and negative as the years go on.  Even though he's made tens of millions taping the show, he's clearly tired of what he's doing and has been phoning it in for years.  He really should retire--maybe he could even spend some time with fellow angry liberal talk-show host Rosie O.

I know writer's assistant

I know a writer's assisstant for Letterman's show. She is so totally in the tank for Obama it is rediculous. She also used to call Bush a murderer around the time of the 2004 election. This is no suprise to me. Letterman stopped being funny about 10 years ago.

I thought Letterman was

I thought Letterman was older than McCain?

He looks it.

Vote 4 change. Vote 4 anything. See Jack & Mr Shy's first campaign ad for the ONLY viable 3rd party candidate.

That doesn't mean he can't

That doesn't mean he can't make fun of McCain's age, does it?

True. But isn't that like

True. But isn't that like Hugh Heffner making fun of Helen Thomas's age?

Both being wizend old prunes.

Ignorant "liberals"

That Daaave--Ha,Ha, Ha! Oh my stomach! Oh, oh, oh! Ha,Ha, Ha!-....."Liberals" are so ignorant.

NEVER,NEVER trust a "liberal"

Haha! YEAH! LOL!

Haha! YEAH! LOL! HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Balboa

Yeah, he can make fun of McCain's age just as long as he makes fun of Obuma's jughead ears. Letterman, the original hillbilly who wears white socks with a suit. Too funny unlike his jokes or that eunich who calls himself a bandleader. Jerk.

That's an awesome level of

That's an awesome level of hatred to keep stored up over a late night show host and his bandleader.

So you're saying Letterman HAS to be equal in his jokes of dems v. repubs?

I watched Letterman

I watched Letterman regularly during the 90's and he was absolutely brutal in his comedic treatment of the Clintons.  Of course, there was no shortage of material to joke about.
