Seattle Paper Refuses to Run Times Hit Piece on McCain

With each passing moment, it appears the New York Times laid a big egg with its hit piece on John McCain.

Not only did the Times bury a follow-up piece in Friday's paper as reported by my colleague Clay Waters, but also the Seattle Post-Intelligencer chose not to run the article due to "serious flaws."

PI's managing editor David McCumber blogged at length about this decision Friday (emphasis added throughout, h/t NB reader David Gliewe):

To me, the story had serious flaws. It did not convincingly make the case that McCain either had an affair with a lobbyist, or was improperly influenced by her. It used a raft of unnamed sources to assert that members of McCain's campaign staff -- not this campaign but his campaign eight years ago -- were concerned about the amount of time McCain was spending with the lobbyist, Vicki Iseman. They were worried about the appearance of a close bond between the two of them.

[...]

A very good editor I happen to work for, P-I Editor and Publisher Roger Oglesby, said today that the story read like a candidate profile to him, not an investigative story, and I think that's true. A candidate profile based on a lot of old anecdotes.

[...]

Admitting that [Times editor Bill] Keller was in a better position to vet the sourcing and facts than I am as, basically, a reader, let's assume that every source is solid and every fact attributed in the story to an anonymous source is true. You're still dealing with a possible appearance of impropriety, eight years ago, that is certainly unproven and probably unprovable.

Where is the solid evidence of this lobbyist improperly influencing (or bedding) McCain? I didn't see it in the half-dozen times I read the story. In paragraphs fifty-eight through sixty-one of the sixty-five-paragraph story, the Times points out two matters in which McCain took actions favorable to the lobbyist's clients -- that were also clearly consistent with his previously stated positions.

That's pretty thin beer.

And the "it must be so because it's in The New York Times" argument will never hold much water after Judith Miller and Ahmed Chalabi got done perforating it.

Ouch. That's gotta smart!

But hold on to your seats, for he wasn't finished:

This story seems to me not to pass the smell test. It makes the innuendo of impropriety, even corruption, without backing it up. I was taught that before you run something in the newspaper that could ruin somebody's reputation, you'd better have your facts very straight indeed.

"Nailed" would be one way to describe that.

Wow. I couldn't have said it any better.

Might be a steering piece

As George Soros funds John McCain and Hillary and Obama for the European cartels influence, might an egg not have been laid by the Times but a plot hatched where liberal McCain is now being championed by Conservatives from support on this site to Rush, Sean and everyone for an "unfair" piece by the Times.

The Times is in very dire straights financially due to loss of circulation as Mr. Murdoch is breathing down their backs.

It is common for the New York Times to political payback or to be shills for the globalists. What better solution to John McCain liberal than to attack him so all the GOP is manipulated to rally to support him.

McCain just might get away with putting an even more liberal VP on the ticket instead of a Lynn Cheney. No one though seems to be talking about liberal John McCain now.....just a vanishing story which was but a feint by greater powers to get the GOP behind him.

Thanks for your time.

That's really a stretch

The NYT laying down, taking hits, for McCain? I really don't think so. No evidence of this whatsoever, none at all.

My state isn't usually this gutsy. . .

On one of our local radio programs, one of the Gonzaga University Journalism professors here in Washington State was asked what kind of letter grade she'd give the article if the same was written by one of her students.  She avoided the answer by stating the student would get a "long discussion" on certain goals that should have been met.  She also mentioned ethical standards.

My favorite part about the interview was how she both lauded the reputation of the NYT, and mentioned the Jayson Blair scandal all in the span of the same segment.

This is where I grew up all right. =)

btw...I am really surprised the SeattlePostIntelligencer didn't print this...they usually are so far left that this leaves me wondering or better yet glad there are some brains left in the business...big boss must of been on leave somewhere...or I have the wrong paper in mind, which very well could be.

I was wondering the exact

I was wondering the exact same thing.  I just wanted to assure the members here that this is an exceptionally rare thing and the locals are scratching their heads as well.  "But. . .but. . .it's the Times!  How could such a thing happen?"

At my old school, journalism students got the Times for free every day as part of the course.

NYT

Apparently the NYT feels it's not their job to present proof of the accusation, it's John McCain's job to disprove it.  And the MSM wonders why they are not trusted.

The sex part of the story isn't credible

But I'm beginning to suspect the lobbying-part is likely to remain an issue...

MSM smear jobs

As a libertarian, I place a very high value on freedom of speech as well as freedom of the press. However, given the MSM's continued slide into the ethical gutter, it might just be getting to the point where the laws that currently shield the MSM from any liability when it comes to smearing public figures need to be seriously re-examined.
