The folks in North Dakota could certainly use some of that global warming right about now, for all through the state, sub-zero temperatures are breaking records.
As reported by the Bismarck Tribune Thursday:
The temperature dropped to minus 33 degrees at the Grand Forks airport Wednesday morning, breaking the record for the date of minus 29 set in 1956, said Al Voelker, a National Weather Service meteorologist in the city.
Devils Lake hit 34 degrees below zero, breaking that city's record for the date of 30 below set in 1939.
Fargo broke a record that had stood for 119 years, with 31 below. The record had been 30 below set in 1889.
Let's all sing together with Daryl and Elmer to get these good folks the global warming they need:

Seattle Confirms New USA Weather Pattern
February 22, 2008 - 00:41 ET by zeestephenFor at least a decade, when the temps turned unusually cold in the Midwest, Seattle has had temps that were unusually warm. That conspicuously changed in 2008. Our temps have been below average for much of the last three months. We had heavy mountain snows and, so far, very little snow melt. Also, during the two recent severe cold waves in the Midwest, Seattle's temp has only been slightly above normal.
If you check the WCCO weatherman Paul Douglas
February 21, 2008 - 18:13 ET by Lame CherryHe was stating this was one of the worst winters in snowfall and cold in 53 years.
It has not so much been the cold this year on the high plains, but the incessant cold coupled with massive storms. The Dakotas have had rain showers which is unheard of, but then were suffering through 30 below with 50 mph winds this past 5 days. It kills wildlife and livestock.
Nebraska has been pummelled by the deep snows which have pounded into Wisconsin.
This prediction was posted here about the solar bandwidth warming causing more vapor in storms and the atmosphere where it is now sloshing around in waves as the earth moves to northern summer again.
What was interesting is the x rays spiked 3 times this past week in NASA monitoring stations out of Boulder. I do not know if this is due to the satellite shootdown, HAARP or if the Russians are behind it as they were using waves in the 70's on America. It does not appear though to be solar though, even as it is hidden in the solar sensors as the spikes were spaced evenly apart which does not happen I believe in solar cycles timing that precise.
In any case, a massive LO is hitting San Francisco which will turn into a Trindidad, CO LO and move onto the plains again. Somewhere on the plains a massive storm will be dumping more moisture and as it shifts to the Illinois there will be tornaodes spawning east.
It is the moisture fueling all of this now as God blessed me to be inspired and not the fake greenhouse gases. The moisture levels retain energy and create larger swings in the grids.
Oh and Paul Douglas was attempting to blame this on the ocean cooling..........I found that odd as the ocean is cooling if the planet is warming according to Al Gore.
In that though, it means the sun is shifting in energy production again which is quick heating surface energy but not penetrating deep sea heating. The energy spikes and does not retain even at surface levels.

February 21, 2008 - 18:39 ET by Chris NormanNoel, is this why the charlatans stretched the description to a million miles wide under the new name "Climate Change" - which pretty much covers every circumstance and fluctuation? I'm noticing that they're using this term more and more in place of "Global Warming".

February 21, 2008 - 19:08 ET by Chris NormanNoel, LOL. Perhaps they've stretched the definition so much that, in meaning everything, it means nothing. It's my sense, and it's definitely unscientific, that since the AlGorama award tour, I've seen less of "Global Warming/Climate Change" on the front burner. Now "the debate is over" maybe they've declared victory and gone home and wouldn't that be nice? I still hear "Global Warming" as part of other stories, but it's in passing and not really pushed. Have you noticed anything like this? Even if true, I suppose once either candidate, especially Obama, is in the WH, the pseodo-issue will move back to the front. Sigh.

February 22, 2008 - 09:59 ET by lotrNOAA: January 2008: Cool and Wet West Contrasts a Warm Northeast
"The average temperature across the contiguous U.S. during January 2008 was near average (ranking the 49th coolest) and the 31st warmest on record globally, according to an analysis by NOAA’s National Climatic Data Center in Asheville, N.C. Temperatures throughout most of the western U.S. were cooler than average and warmer than normal in the Northeast."

For those interested in geographical distributions of hot/cold anomalies, I found the following figure off the above page to be quite revealing:

What a wonderful graph you
February 22, 2008 - 12:00 ET by danboWhat a wonderful graph you have there. How many ways can we distort.
"this projection is handy for plotting locations, it unfortunately distorts areas by a factor of the secant of longitude. The result is that areas near the poles are greatly enlarged, ... The result is that a temperature anomaly near one of the poles, as in the lower panel of Hansen’s graph, will appear to be disproportionately important for average global temperature. "
But then it comes from prople with the adjusted data on this page as Miami, AZ and Cederville, CA where historical data is adjusted down ward but recent data is unadjusted. It's easy to find heat when you do that.
For reference.

map projections
February 22, 2008 - 12:42 ET by lotrFirst off, it is not my map -- once again, I am just providing access to the NOAA/NESDIS/NCDC climate summaries.
Secondly, it is indeed a valid point that the map is not equal-area, which then gives disproportionate weight to the extratropical regions. However, the point of my posting it is to illustrate that while one area of the world might be experiencing colder-than-average, or even record-breaking cold, other areas experience the opposite.
Equal area projections, while fine for giving indication of the spatial weighting of a global mean, do suffer other forms of severe distortion, which is why other map projections are more often employed (even by National Geographic) for display purposes. But otherwise I would agree that equal-area would've been better -- I usually use equal-area myself in publications -- personally, I kind of like the McBryde-Thomas flat-polar parabolic projection as it still does a reasonable job of resolving the poles.
You used it? It's yours.
February 22, 2008 - 13:04 ET by danboYou used it? It's yours.
When asome place has a warm period. It's warming. But when there's cooling ignore it.
My personal opinion is the average graphs, I gave have warm biases in them. Especially GISS and Hadcut. And I say it. But despite that bias they show a cooling.

lotr. interesting
February 22, 2008 - 14:03 ET by Gary HallInteresting:
However - If the big story is that we are currently in this man-made global warming trend -- ever increasing temperatures -- then being below the ever increasing trend line would be quite notable. This is not just below the trend line, however, this is cooler than the average of the last 100+ years. And I note that 49th coolest year carries a bit more weight than the 31st warmest.
31------------------------------[]-------------------------------------------------49
Now in that examle, NOAA is comparing to all of recorded history (since the very late 1800's), but in the next one you mentioned, you Temp anomalies Jan 2008 - you'll note that the base period for the comparison is from 1961-1999. The period around 1970 would mark another cooler cycle, so if we are in two coinciding warming cycles, one a little natural dip, and the second, a powerful on the move man-made global warming cycle, this map looks even cooler to me.
Noel, as a native North
February 22, 2008 - 10:29 ET by BDNoel, as a native North Dakotan I gotta tell you that -33F is colder than anything I can recall from my youth. I remember a couple of -31F days, but never a -33F.

February 22, 2008 - 11:25 ET byJust imagine how much colder it would be without it. Not even Al Gore would be able to describe that kind of cold.
It jumped the shark
February 22, 2008 - 14:26 ET by wizardjrThis concerted effort to call it Climate Change is an admission that Global Warming has jumped the shark. The southern hemisphere's winter was a killer freeze. South Africa had the first snow in 50 years. South America had dead folks all over the place due to extreme winter conditions. Our half of the planet has had extreme winter conditions all over the place. The oceans have given up 20% of their heat in the last 10 years. 1998 looks like the peak temperature year this cycle. Etc., etc., etc.
However, the power grabbers aren't going to give up or go away. Thus "Climate Change" as an ongoing excuse to take over your life. Bah, humbug!
