Folks that question man's role in climate change are well aware of the fanaticism displayed by those preaching gloom and doom if we don't immediately stop burning fossil fuels.
Non-believers like to refer to such people as warm-mongers.
With this in mind, astrophysicist Dr. Sallie Baliunas gave a lecture about global warming at the University of Texas, Tyler, on Tuesday, deliciously equating warm-mongers to folks in 16th and 17th century Europe "where religious and political institutions blamed witches - mostly women - for poor growing periods or storms."
As reported by the Tyler Morning Telegraph Wednesday (h/t NBer wilbur747, emphasis added throughout):
Dr. Baliunas' work with fellow Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics astronomer Willie Soon suggests global warming is more directly related to solar variability than to increased levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, an alternative view to what's been widely publicized in the mainstream media.
[...]
Baliunas asserts that increases and decreases in solar output led to historically warmer and cooler periods.
Of course, this is a premise warm-mongers strongly disagree with, although most of them recognize that when the sun rises in the morning, warming normally occurs. Contrarily, when it sets, the earth cools.
Shocking concept, huh? But I digress, for here was the fabulous money shot:
She also said civilizations have always looked for the cause of climate changes.
In 16th and 17th century Europe, thousands were executed for what was called "weather cooking," where religious and political institutions blamed witches - mostly women - for poor growing periods or storms.
She's causing global warming! Burn her!

Universities?
February 14, 2008 - 14:54 ET by iveseenitallAs I wrote in another post today, many of our "universities" today are nothing but bastions of ignorance. They are so busy implying ignorance in others, they ignore it in themselves. Dr. Baliunas, however, seems to get it. Good thing.

Academic credentials
February 14, 2008 - 16:35 ET by KC MulvillePart of the social utility of universities is that they certify that graduates have mastered the teaching they've been given. The result? Certification means that the student has the same attitudes and mindset about the topic that the teachers do.
Scientists are the ultimate herd. They maintain their personal identity as members of the herd. After all, a scientist publishes his works so that the other members of his herd can examine it and see whether the rest of the herd will support him.
Herd behavior is usually a good thing. But not always. It's up to any individual, on any particular topic or time, to decide whether the herd is being helpful or harmful.
Conservatives are giving McCain a hard time...
February 14, 2008 - 19:35 ET by ThalpyConservatives are giving McCain a hard time because there is little or nothing about him that is conservative. On occasion Senator McCain's views conform to conservative principles, but often they do not. His idea of reaching across the aisle to the "opposition" does not represent bipartisanship because, for the most part, these alleged foes have been his like-minded friends all along. Just because President Bush has called him a conservative doesn't make it so. On the contrary, I would suggest that John F. Kennedy was more conservative than John McCain.

On the other hand, if my stepfather can be a liberal professor at Texas A&M then I suppose there can be an occasional rational thought at Texas.
When a liberal speaks, the truth is busy elsewhere.

February 14, 2008 - 15:14 ET by Wilbur747Rise up Comrades! This so-called 'scientist' has strayed from the State. She obviously has been in contact with those heretic conservatives. She must be immediately arrested and interned in the re-education camp until she sees the error of her ways.
And if she doesn't confess and decide to embrace the truth, then we will have no choice but to "lose" her...

Bible does talk about weather
February 14, 2008 - 16:49 ET by Lame CherryThe forces of nature can indeed be manipulated and controlled. Jesus hushed storms quite well, Jonah took a swim into a fish's interior due to a storm..........so it is quit factual that the dark forces of the devil or minion witches can indeed cause weather. Job lost a great deal by the devil in weather.
I have a wonderful experience in a tornado which was knocking rocks off my pick up as it was blowing that hard. I prayed and while the dust was bad inside the cab, I kept on driving like it was a summer day with no wind yanking on the vehicle.
So God, demons and people do indeed affect weather.
It is though nice that the scientists have discovered what I have written on for years that it is the sun. Perhaps we can now all put an air conditioner on it to make more money for grubbing researchers building it.
The one scientific experiment I would really enjoy running though is to test stories posted as Mr. Sheppard always gets huge feedback while some posters barely get 3 messages.
Just once I would like Mr. Sheppard to put his name on posts by some of the gals on here who never get huge feedbacks just to see if star appeal is what drives stories or is it in fact content.
Sorry off subject, but it is science and it puzzles me why wonderful posts on here by others never receive the attention. There is so much good information here.
Back to solar warming.

It is reassuring to see...
February 14, 2008 - 17:10 ET by ThalpyIt is reassuring to see that some universities, unlike Columbia, are willing to entertain varying points of view. Dr. Baliunus simply said that current scientific data did not support the CO2/global warming model. That is, increased CO2 does not bring increased global temperature. Of course, that esteemed scientist, intellectual, savant, etc., etc., etc., Albert Gore Jr. is the recipient of the Nobel Prize for Anthropogenic Climate Science. Arafat and Carter won Nobels for something too.
