For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: Is there a delicious "Florida Recount Debacle II" developing in the Democrat presidential nomination process that Republicans have to be secretly hoping for?
This time out, many party leaders are concerned, including Howard Dean. Given the tightness of the race and, likely, its inevitable yet unprecedented racial or gender disappointment, the Democratic National Committee Chair fears a "big fight at the convention" should no clear nominee arise by April.
Wouldn't it be an exquisite poetic justice if Democrats -- who for years have depicted George W. Bush as having stolen the presidency with the help of the Supreme Court, and have continually called for the abolition of the Electoral College -- allowed the Clintons to "procedurally" steal the nomination from Barack Obama who could actually have more chosen delegates and more popular votes at the time of the convention?
Is this scenario possible nay likely? If it happens, what would it do to the Democrat Party, and how would it impact the election?

Searching for George (McGovern)
February 13, 2008 - 11:28 ET by sarcasmoI remember reading a short but very good WSJ editorial (referenced by this URL) by, of all people, George McGovern in the early '90s. It made me wish he hadn't retired (the Cigar Aff. article linked there is also quite good, but I really-want the WSJ article!). Unfortunately, googling for it whether by me or others hasn't been productive. The article was written in the aftermath of the failure of his retirement B&B business, and my motive for getting it more exposure is the hope that Barak Obama might somehow be induced to read it...
If anyone here has any "pull" with the Wall Street Journal and could somehow induce them to make it available online, I'd be much obliged. It might even do our country some good, too.

February 13, 2008 - 12:26 ET by sarcasmoThe one I recall was more of a personal story of the failure of his retirement B&B due at least in part to lawsuits in which there was no "loser pays" so his business, while "winning" the lawsuits, ultimately lost. My memory from that long-ago has begun to fail me.
And trust me, it's even worse when an obese government (with literally-unlimited funds) rather than just a trial lawyer is doing the sueing and trying to put you out of business, but I doubt Obama's as interested in my experience as he is in George's. I think the date of the WSJ editorial I want is around 1992. It was the first pro-freedom message I'd ever seen from George, so it was something of a shock compared to the later "leave smokers alone" pieces.

GET OUT THE COLLEGE VOTE
February 13, 2008 - 11:49 ET by billbEveryone want's to get out the college vote. Doesn't it make you feel all warm and fuzzy to watch these youngsters popping up on the cable networks and the internet. I have but one question. To which tax bracket do these young civic minded students belong? They should record their Youtube appearances and play them back 10 years from now.
The Dems painted themselves
February 13, 2008 - 11:52 ET by dscottThe Dems painted themselves into a no win situation by allowing Hillary to campaign 24 hours in manipulation of the rules before the vote and Obama observed the spirit of the rules and didn't run to Florida when Hillary did. So who is in the wrong and was it planned? In my mind, the date set by the State elections officials trumps any party rules, the State decides when to take the vote, not any political party! Yes, sometimes those two interests coincide, however, it is the people's officials not the party officials who make the decisions otherwise we have the fox guarding the henhouse.
Be that as it may, it was the Dem party who decided not to count any primary votes for their nominee. Which Dem party bosses made that decision, would they be Clinton supporters coincidently??? Curiously, why would the party bosses leave a loophole to in campaign in Florida 24 hrs prior to the primary? It sounds like a lawyerly ploy to me, why leave the loophole if your intent was not to have anyone go there? So surprise, surprise the Florida voters voted for the candidate that paid attention to them instead of treating them like red haired step children (no offense to red haired people). I would submit Hillary and her buddies planned this in advance to have Florida and Michigan delegates in their back pockets in the event her campaign ran into trouble, that way she would be the knight in shining armour to all the disenfranchised Dems. Did I not warn many weeks ago that the Clintons would pull the "it's not fair" routine as to the delegates?
The only way for the Dems to be rescued from this fiasco is for Hillary to drop out and let Obama be the nominee for the sake of their party. However, I doubt very seriously that either Clinton has the depth of character to do the right thing as far as their party. They are DINOs after all, they always were out for themselves and used the Dem party to advance themselves. Now how does it feel you Dems for 16 years to have to defend and hold your noses to vote for a Clinton just to get someone with a D behind their name in the WH or Senate??? You now have the chance to put this bad memory and embarrassment behind you, choose Obama and you will have CHANGE. Repudiate the party bosses, think for yourselves!
Remember the triangulating manipulators not only have the Florida and Michigan vote but also the super delegates like Bill Clinton to install Hillary as the Dem nominee. There aren't enough state delegates for two evenly matched opponents in the Dem primary to clinch the nomination, another deliberate choice of the party bosses. You see the Clintons have been very busy since January 2001. CHANGE begins at home, if you can't even oust an entrenched elite out of your own party, how can you possibly offer CHANGE to the rest of the country?

Thanks for adding the second state (Michigan). I was going to include the second state but couldn't remember which it was (my guess was Ohio) but I was too lazy to research it so I left it out and just mentioned Florida. :-)
Everyone knew that Clinton only agreed to it with the unspoken reservation that she would contest it if necessary.
As for "allowing her to campaign" in Florida, how were they supposed to stop her? Were they supposed to set up a roadblock at the border? Quarantine her plane so she couldn't get off?
I know!! They could have said that if she did, the delegates wouldn't count!! Oh, wait a minute, they did.

February 13, 2008 - 13:45 ET by dscottTrue, the party can decide not to count the results in order to trump the State's right to choose any date they wish, but then such a victory is hollow as the Dems are finding out, isn't it? In the end the voters trump the party. What goes around, comes around.

Florida all over again?
February 13, 2008 - 12:33 ET by DelsaNot exactly. The issue in florida had to do with a FEDERAL election and the RULES by which VOTES are counted.
The Supreme Court of the United States, as the highest Federal Court, clearly got involved when the RULES governing the counting of ballots, in a Federal Election, in the state of Florida, after they had been cast was in doubt.
The supreme court ruled that the RULES governing ELECTIONS and the COUNTNG of BALLOTS could NOT change AFTER and ELECTION had taken place. The ELECTION RULES in place prior to an election, must be the RULES used after the election.
The Supreme Court has also stated that the respective political parties have total authority over the rules that govern their respective primarys etc.
With the Democrats it is a case where the parties were punished after moving primary and caucus dates without the sanction of the National Party. These punishments were in place prior to the primarys and caucusses. And prior to voting and ballot counting. In some cases, Obama was not on the ballot.
But hillary wants to steal this nomination and IF she can she will.
I don't see a lot of similarities, except where some are attempting to equate popular vote, the people, versus electoral college, the super delegates. The electoral college works. Change our Constitution if we are now going to toss our voting process.
In a country where Hillary and her ilk would attempt to steal a simple primary, immagine what they could do with NO paper ballots and touch screen balloting?
The Democrat's Super Delegates
February 13, 2008 - 13:18 ET by Hunter12This idea was conceived to keep party booses from stealing an election and at the same time keep the uneducated masses from giving the nomination to someone who was unelectable. It will be interesting to see if party bosses steal the election from their best candidate and give it to someone who is unelectable.

The electoral college
February 13, 2008 - 14:00 ET by motherbeltThe electoral college works. Change our Constitution if we are now going to toss our voting process. -Delsa
Delsa, they are trying to do it piecemeal, state by state, by getting laws passed in the individual states, to change that. If enough states do this, it could effectively end the electoral college. I was just reading about some of those states..I even looked in my history, but can't find the page. I'll keep looking, and come back if I find it.
The article even said that it is a method for bypassing the necessity of a constitutional amendment.
Update: Here it is: Goodbye Electoral College?
The scary thing is the states would be pledging their votes to match the national popular vote, not the one in their individual state.
To me this just doesn't seem legal. If it's in the Constitution, don't we need an amendment to change it?
MB...several states have done this
February 13, 2008 - 17:57 ET by LionKingIf I was a voter in one of those states, I would be majorly upset. My vote is watered down as part of the popular vote of everyone.
Minimal campaigning in these states by presidential candidates would be my guess.
Stealing an election with touch screen shenanigans?
February 13, 2008 - 16:24 ET by WhoIsJohnGaltNow, I have no doubt that Hillary & Co would do whatever they could to undermine the process by trying to get Florida counted and steal the primary by threatening super-delagates, but I seriously doubt that even they would resort to that...after all, it's actually CRIMINAL behavior...
Okay, well, maybe the "CRIMINAL behavior" argument used to defend the Clintons is a stretch, but it's a Federal crime, and even they wouldn't commit...
Okay, well so they've commited fderal crimes before, and they have no compunction about doing such things again, but it is a BIG felony and they could lose face and be embarrassed and shamed in front of the entire country and...um...
Okay, so I have no cogent argument that holds any water against why I think the Clintons wouldn't stoops so low. None that passes the smell test anyway, but still...stealing ballots at that level?

I usually tune into the Marlins somewhere around the fifth inning to check the score if you get my drift.
I was really being a bit sarcastic.
balboa, Ban baseball then, and then move on to the Nations

How about congress reply to the President?
This is the MOST useless congress, in my life time.
Then again, when they pass no laws, it's a good day!

New Rush Obama parody!
February 13, 2008 - 13:29 ET by motherbeltOMG, is anyone listening to Rush? I just heard the new "Barack Obama" parody ad that Rush is playing? It's based on his platitudes and has an Obama impersonator saying (in soaring oratory) thing like:
We need to leave the past behind,..(pause)... as we go forward...
In the face of change..., (pause) ... I believe in hope...
In the face of hope, ...(pause) ..... I believe in change....
I believe the things we need to do ...(pause).....are the things that have not been done...
It's hilarious. I may not have the exact words, but you get the idea....

O'Bama
February 13, 2008 - 14:21 ET by ricklailMike Church played a parody of O'Bama to Roseanna. He calls him O'Bama like in Bama. You might be able to find it at MikeChurch.com. If you are not familiar with him he host a program on Sirius 144 the Patriot from 9 to 12 everday.

February 13, 2008 - 13:41 ET by GothampcHillary Clinton just said she wants to make minimum wage $9.50. That sucking sound you hear is every entry-level job leaving the United States.
LOL, I wonder if Obama will
February 13, 2008 - 13:55 ET by dscottLOL, I wonder if Obama will up the ante? Do I hear $10/hr? $10/hr, $10/hr, yes we have a competing bid of $10/hr, do we have a bid for $10.50? $10.50,$10.50,$10.50...
So Hillary is trying to out liberal the liberal? Let's see how many bribes she can put out there to get those votes. What's next? Free Health Care for all at the greedy rich people's expense? I wonder how many dopes for fall for that rope?

February 13, 2008 - 14:11 ET by DelsaMB I think the elctoral college is part of the 12 Amendment to the Constitution.
I do know it would take a constitutional amendment to change it.
Not going to happen and i am glad.

Democrats are really stuck on stupid
February 13, 2008 - 14:28 ET by candanceI wasn't much of a big fan of NAFTA, but now, 15 years later, Obama wants to overturn it. And Hillary wants to bump up minimum wage to over 9 dollars an hour.
These are stupid ideas, plain and simple. Anyone with half a brain can figure that out.
#1 - Immigrants are not even making minimum wage in the first place. If we can't enforce them to hire legal workers, how can we enforce minimum wage? Say hello to wages staying down across the board.
#2 - You can't look a company and tell them, "raise your wages, pay more taxes, and develop alternative products whether or not they sell...and for all this investment, you get no extra benefit." Why yes India, you're welcome for all the new companies moving to Dubai.
#3 - Poor American workers (like cashiers) are not struggling because of minimum wage. Most are paid well above that on the hour - but only see 20 to 30 hours a week. Every federal wage increase is met with hours being cut in retail. Thus they bring home the same pay regardless.
#4 - Restaurants and stores that thrive on minimum wage will not absorb the extra cost. They simply raise their prices. So the guy who works at Papa John's can't afford the pizza. The girl who works at the dollar store can't afford to buy enough clothing.
I simply do not understand why people ignore this and condemn working class Americans to be even more worse off.
I simply do not understand

The politics of envy and victimization sells just as well as sex does in commercials. People covet what they don't have and when they buy it, they rarely get what they imagined. It's called being sold. Sometimes I think both the conartist and the mark are equally guilty. The con usually (not always) appeals to people's greed (something for nothing) and so swindles them using their own vice. The rest of the marks are just easily fooled by the flourishes and fast talk.
After 50 years of welfare induced poverty and 70% out of wedlock births, you would think by now most blacks would finally get it, they still fall for the something for nothing scam. You never give a sucker an even break.

Simple ways to help the poor
February 13, 2008 - 15:22 ET by candanceThe government wants to give poor people a break? Here are some ideas they could look at:
-Get a grip on inflation so dollars go further.
-Lay off the ethanol subsidies so the price of food will go down.
-Let us drill for domestic oil and lower the gas tax.
-Enforce the friggin laws so illegal workers stop underbidding wages.
-Make it easier for underpriviledged kids to go to college (the current financial aid system is bogus and tilted toward voting blocs).
